- This was a short trip to the town of Welch, West Virginia which has a lot of cool history! Birthplace of Steve Harvey also the first public playground in America was built in Welch.
The first Public Parking Garage was built in 1941 shown in the video still standing but in bad shape!
Welch is also the reason Food Stamps was created after a visit from JFK in the 1960’s also the first to receive Food Stamps lived in the county the city of Welch is in!
The town was booming due to Coal and Steel until 1986!

I moved outside of welch its very nice little town
Grew up there the whole county is a ghost town.
Going through my old home town. Not a old school it was a Deskin supermarket in my days. Not sure about the 1st playground but for sure the 1st public parking garage.@ 5:04 the white and blue building was were i went to kindergarten. Always past through Horsepen going to Abingdon. Good memories in this video.
Probably one of the most prominent people to come out of Welch WV is actor comedian game show host Steve Harvey he was born there.
Well. I live in Welch and Harvey ain't anything to be proud of.
@@bradlane3662, matter of opinion Steve Harvey is a self made man that came from nothing living out of his car at a point in his life and now is a multi millionaire I would say that's something to be proud of.
@@RoadLiner You don't have to give me his sob story. I've heard it. He's super rich, self made, and black. I know all this. And just like Oprah Winfrey, as prejudiced as hell. Truth is truth. Not opinion. And I could name you lots of people, black and white, who came from this county who deserve praise much more than him. But I'm done here.
@@bradlane3662 , Steve Harvey.. rich as hell and could give a damn what you think of him 😆
@@RoadLiner Well, there's one thing about it. If he ate dog shit with a spoon you'd support him. For obvious reasons. And he don't give a shit about you either.
LoL
show us more of your girl
This was a great place to grow up. Anything you needed. But the industry that made it became so automated that it doesn't take workers to mine coal anymore. It's a hurtful thing to listen to people like you say bad things about it. What right do you have to do that? Your generation has no compassion for anything or anybody. That's a sad thing. God bless you.
Not sure why you think we are disrespecting the place it’s sad to see. Would love to see it come back alive!
Also my Generation I grew up in the 90’s 😂 I was born in the 80’s also a lot of my generation are saving old buildings the Boomers started to let Rot and also tearing them down in the 70’s
You know I would not mind living there. All the green trees and I bet you it's quite. Homes are probly dirt cheap in a place like that too.
Who needs clean drinking water and fast internet and grocery stores, anyway??!?
