How about somewhere in the Blue Ridge of northern Georgia-western North Carolina? The eastern continental divide region is different from the heart of Appalachia that was scarred physically and culturally by industrial coal mining.
I worked in Man West Virginia at Rockhouse #2 coal mine. I drove from Freeburn Kentucky, Pike Co.. lord how I wish I had the means to go back ..GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

Maybe you want to tell us if giving birth is painful? You know, since you like to talk about things that you have no experience with. I'm a person of color and I went to grade and middle school in Grafton, WV then went to high school in both Wheeling and Bluefield. I can tell you that racism is engrained in mountain culture. There is a very, very small percent of the population that is not bigoted but by and large its the norm. I jumped on Greyhound a few days after turning 18 and never looked back. Now I want to hear you tell us how gravity is on the moon..again since you've not actually experienced it.
@@JohnMosquera-Colombia Agree, "mountain folk" are suspicious of anyone different from them. It's part of their makeup to be fearful of other cultures and not understand or accept them. Back in '71 we ( Princeton Tigers) had a wrestling match with Man. The snow storm started just as we got there and we ended up getting snowed in. We spent the night in the gym, on the mat with one army blanket each. Somehow the exhaust fan in the gym got turned on... geez it got cold in there... froze our behinds off! One of those nights that you're glad to see the sun come up!
The towns may look dilapidated but you wo t find better people in country. Most West Virginians would give the shirt off their backs to a total stranger.
Thank you for posting these videos. As an Australian, i find them interesting as theyre of places that are not normally spoken about, or on a 'things to see' list..
As an American who had never stepped foot in the Appalachian mountains, put this place on your bucket list my Aussie brother! I have been as far north as Alaska, far south as Baja California. Been thru the Cascades, Rockies, Sawtooths, Chugach and now the Appalachias. Yellowstone, Joshua Tree, Glacier, Yosemite and now the New River Gorge Honestly thought I'd seen it all, but the Appalachias blew my mind. The mountains, terrain and sprawling deciduous forest is absolutely epic and breathtakingly beautiful. The way the rivers, creeks and streams thread their way thru the land is like nothing is ever seen. Like driving thru a postcard, no exaggeration. If you are an outdoors person, you will love what you find. The state motto of "Wild and Wonderful" has been uttered by myself many times upon bearing witness to state's seemingly endless wonder. I love West Virginia thru and thru 😍
You can take a feller out of the holler but you can never take the holler out of the feller !!!! I really enjoy your channel because even though I no longer live I Appalachia, I am reminded of the life where I grew up !!! Thank you for all these videos from home !!
Great video. As an Ohio yankee, I'm proud to say I'm my wife was born in Man and my mother in law was a Man Hillbilly. West Virginia has a culture of its own. While I haven't personally adopted the slaw dog, I do enjoy my frequent visits to the state.
I was born in man hospital, very good people live down there man hasn't changed a bunch me and my wife try too go down once a year . Getting down there has definitely changed it used to take us 12hrs to get their from Ohio now it only takes 6 .
It's also my neck of the woods but live in Tennessee now. The only reason for me to go back is my nephew now, but I will always have love for the place. Buffalo creek was my neck of the woods.
Salt Peter Caves near Livingston KY would be an interesting tale… Salt Peter was mined there during the Civil War for munitions, and later it became a tourist attraction for many to see what’s under the ground. It was closed down for a period of time, but has reopened recently and I’m sure it would be a great addition to your Appalachian series
That big empty parking lot and concrete pad before you got to the high school is the former location of one of the original memorial hospitals built by the United Mine Workers in the mid-50s. It was where most victims of Buffalo Creek were cared for before the overwhelming number could be sent out to other facilities. It was closed around the year 2000, abandoned and finally demolished a little more than 10 years later. Sad story.
I miss that Hospital very much, I'm one who never wanted to go to the Hp. It never bothered me one bit to go there, the greatest care and huge heart the area people had. You don't see that no more, I could've sit and talked with the elders all day! (Glen). WV.
Enjoyed this episode as well. The Appalachian people have weathered many storms. Awesome people! The mountains and hollers really do tug on your heart. Keep up the great work.
Harper's Ferry... Down in the Shenandoah River Valley...that's where I really got the Hatfield's and McCoys kinds feeling! Really beautiful country.... worked out at Dulles in 95+96 Visited that area as much as possible
Love this video!! My dads side of the family is from here. They all had to run for the mountain when the dam burst. Listening to the stories of that are both heartbreaking and heartwarming. My granddaddy owned Western Auto there back in the day and worked in the mines as well as my great granddaddy and many more. I still have family living there❤️

One thing about living in that part of the country is that if you lived there 20,30, 40 or more years ago, lot of things are pretty much the same, I am from Bluefield, and not much has changed there since I left there in 1974. I consider that a good thing
Come back to Logan during Christmas time and visit our park. Called Christmas in the Park, it is full of so many displays and lights. Really a beautiful sight that I'm sure your viewers would love to see
I'm from Man, I love this series and thank you for highlighting my hometown. I've since moved near Morgantown but most of my family is still there, and I vist a few times a year. It has its flaws but I honestly after living in various parts of the state don't think there is anywhere I would have rather grown up. Thank you again for the great job you have done on this episode and many of the episodes on small towns in Southern WV and all throughout Appalachia.
Just outside of man West Virginia is a community called Greenville. I grew up there and loved every minute of it I wish there was a tour through Greenville we did go to school in man. We moved to New Jersey in 1964 and I remember a flood that year
One of the better looking Main Streets of those you have shown. Sadly, it doesn't look a lot more prosperous, but things look well kept. Beautiful nature. Wishing the best for all those in West Virginia
I live ten miles above Man in Gilbert WV . I love WV and the people around here ! The Hatfield & McCoy trails helped these small towns with revenue with the tourism !!

You should look into the story of the Martin-Tolliver Feud in Morehead, KY. In a sense it was considered worse than the Hatfield-McCoy Feud. How about visiting some of the coal camps? Rita is nearby and has a rich history with the highway coming in and the residents fighting to stay there! The twin coal camp of Wilburn was torn down to make the Rita Mall across the river. It has since gone down hill. There were many coal camps that fed into the Man Jr High and Man High School.
I'm surprised I found your channel. I'm right here in ashland, ky. You should come and visit some time and maybe some old towns that technically don't exist anymore here in boyd and lawrence county.
This MAN is a first time viewer! Well, this MAN sure enjoyed your Vlog about MAN, WV. Made me think of my younger days, and my mom's 1961 Rambler with the license plate of MAN 025. It also made me think of the independently minded West Virginia Senator, Joseph MANchin. Glad that no MANichins were harmed in your video. I fondly remember one of my favorite songs by a MAN named John Denver that wrote a beautiful song about West Virginia. MAN, you really brought to light some good memories, and this MAN certainly appreciates your work in posting this. Thank you MAN, for your Vlog about MAN, West Virginia!! Maybe you can do a Vlog about WHY, Arizona next?
Glad to see Man! Suggestion go a little slower and point out things as you pass. How about someone to ride along that has lived there a long time to point out some things. Also, there is the Hatfield and McCoy trail there that would be of interest.
I would love if you could visit Oceana W.V. My Dad was from there. Huff Creek. My grandparents owned a little grocery store there. I really don't know my family roots as after my Dad married my Mother and got out of the Marines they moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Dad was in the Korean War.
We also lived in oceano. My dad worked for Ford motor company across from the elementary school. We moved from there to man and left in 1964 to New Jersey

Well, thanks, I think? I'm really "crowing" for all of Appalachia in this series- it's just that I've started in the WV, southwest VA, east TN, and east KY area. This coming year (2023) I'll expand more into western NC, the Smokies, and the further reaches of Appalachia 😊
Wow Chief Logan had a large stomping ground, I live in Central Pennsylvania and he was huge here in this area also. We have/had all kinds of things and places named after him including Chief Logan High School and the football team was The Mingoes, stores streets stream and on a on.
Do you have any.videos of eastern. Kentucky? I'm a big fan of the country singer,Gary Stewart. He was born in Jenkins up in a holler, his dad moved them to Florida when Gary was 12 years old. I don't live far from Jenkins. I would like to see where Gary was born. Gary was the best male country singer.

I had the opportunity to meet people from Man Wva in the 80s and I think about em alot cause I wonder if most of the guys I met are still living cause they were some really good people. I still know their names although I do good to remember names of people that I grew with lol. I'd say the names but I don't know if they do the TH-cam thing as much as I do.
Do one on Sophia, Slabfork, soak creek, Permberton Hot Coal, MIdway
I'm surprised I found your channel. I'm right here in ashland, ky. You should come and visit some time and maybe some old towns that technically don't exist anymore here in boyd and lawrence county.
Glad you did, and good idea!
The only time I have been to Logan County was for a high school football game in fall of 1969.
Another great post. Thanks a lot.
Much appreciated, thanks for watching!
Go to Matawan I went there when the tug river flooded met some of the best people from wva
I was there not too long ago and did an episode, be sure to check it out. Thanks for watching!
Do a video on Oceana WV in Wyoming County. It's just over the hill from Man.
I see what you did there 😉
great work...keep doin it
I know Man pretty well, I'm also from Logan County
Nice, hope you enjoyed this episode! Planning to do more in other parts of the county.
Thank you 😊
I’m from West Virginia all my family there very beautiful country
Indeed it is!
looks like heaven to me.
Like much of Appalachia in these parts, yet distinct. Thx for watching!
Glad to see Man! Suggestion go a little slower and point out things as you pass. How about someone to ride along that has lived there a long time to point out some things. Also, there is the Hatfield and McCoy trail there that would be of interest.
Great stuff, learning about the parts of the USA we do not get told about.😊
There are some nice homes there! Love those front porches with a view of the mountains. How did Man fare with the floods?
I would love if you could visit Oceana W.V. My Dad was from there. Huff Creek. My grandparents owned a little grocery store there. I really don't know my family roots as after my Dad married my Mother and got out of the Marines they moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Dad was in the Korean War.
We also lived in oceano. My dad worked for Ford motor company across from the elementary school. We moved from there to man and left in 1964 to New Jersey
Every State of The Union should have a guy like you.
Someone who wants to Crow to the World about how Wonderful his State is,
simply for the love of his State and not for the Love of Money.
You do a better job advertising WV than any NYC Advertising Agency could ever do.
Interesting, thanks for sharing!
Pretty little house there.
I worked for Amherst Coal.
Great job of showing your home turf.
Thanks for watching!
You should come explore Philippi WV or just Barbour County WV all together. Philippi was the site of the first Land Battle of the civil war.
What about oceana it is another coal town and it is just a few miles down the road on route 10
Manchester, Kentucky would be my suggestion for the subject of a video...
Sure do! I have several episodes, including Pikeville & Hazard. Be sure to check them out!
@@MountainRoots Homeplace of Gary Stewart. Jenkins Kentucky
Footnote: After the Buffalo Creek mine disaster financial selltelment Logan county was the richest county in the U.S. for a time. (As reported in the Wall Street Journal)
Tatoo Charley pops in mind cause he Tatood me lol...I hope he's doing well and still kicking
