  • This is a simplified how-to of how to disassemble your GTO's ignition cylinder, in this video I will also be addressing some of the key points which need to looked at/ modded. The only tools needed for disassembly are a simple flathead screwdriver and keychain keyring/ small allen head wrench.
    Unfortunately I did the mod to my cylinder years ago, so all I can show you is a finalized version of what it would look like when it is all said and done. It's a very easy mod which has stood the test of time in my daily driver vehicle.
    This mod was done to the Gen 1 version of the cylinder which was made of aluminum which was way too soft, over a short amount of time, the bad design and excessive pressure of the pin would cause rutting and would lock you out from turning the car on or off when it would be too hot or too cold out. Since then a Gen. 2 cylinder has been released by GM, but the results from those are iffy and who knows how long they would last. I suggest you do this to your new style cylinder as well, because an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
    All you need to do once everything is disassembled is remove the black tab at the top from the tumbler assembly, cut one coil off the pins spring, round the pins edges, and remove the ramp entirely from the actual ignition cylinder itself. The tools required for this is a Dremel with a small aluminum cutting bit or a grinding bit for the removal of metal, and a pair of small cutting pliers to cut the springs coils.
    If you would like some crystal clear pictures let me know and I can get them for you. I apologize if the video might be blurry. I am using a camera phone.
    One more thing, if you want to view pictures I made a thread with all the compilations of pictures and videos of various users including myself over the years:

    This works great!! For those trying to get the key to turn. Try using a rubber mallet and tap it a few times while Turing the key. It has worked for me on 3 different cars now.

      no my new cylinder should be coming in tomarrow I'm gonna remove it then . but I thought you have to spin the key before removing the cylinder

    • @dalton_carp
      @dalton_carp 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +sSkillaz336 I didn't. I had a tiny curved metal piece where I could pop it off and then take the key slot out of the cylinder

    Great video!!! Didn't do the mod because the first steps allowed me to identify that the stud was broken inside the ignition. I had the problem where my car was stuck in the on position because the stud broke inside the ignition. When I would turn the key it was turn freely and not crank at all. I'm getting ready to look for a replacement will update for anyone having the same issues.

    I wish I could post a more recent update in HD but I have sadly since that time sold my Goat. If you or anyone local in the bay area needs work done on their cylinder and would like for me to do it for you I would be more then happy to do it for you. Either drop me a comment on here or leave me a personal message on here. Thanks guys and happy modding. -Roberto

      damn. wish I was closer to the bay. down in socal. have an 06 an already replaced the ignition once. just locked me out again. I don't wanna spend another $300 to have a locksmith come an replace it all again.

      ... hzjshssb wish i could be of help man. I could still probably do all of this with my eyes closed honestly, it was stupid easy for me at the time. I'll bet you money that the Goat with the cylinder I modded is still running around starting up as smooth as like the day I fixed it. Best of luck to you.

      +Roberto Sanchez may I ask what you think it might be? as I mentioned, it has a brand new ignition and brand new key cut to spec. it worked fine for about a month or so an then boom. nothing. steering wheels turns a fraction but the key will not turn over. I've yanked the steering wheel just shy of shearing it off completely. all the while jiggling the key simultaneously. nada. really don't wanna sell the car as its fun to drive but damn. this is rediculous.

    • @ZLRob
      @ZLRob  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ... hzjshssb the pin which you can see in the video is stuck in the niche right before the ramp. You would have to remove the cylinder and remove the ramp entirely in order to free the ignition and keep it rom doing it again. Cut a coil off the pin's spring to reduce downward pressure and round the pin in order to remove it's point. It's all related to the problem, but there is no one immediate fix to get it to work right, if you want to do it right.
      My advice, carefully take a rubber mallet and while you take your key and attempt to turn it, tap on the top of the key with the mallet. Depending how stuck it is, it may be small hits, but it could also be larger hits. Be careful and stop if you feel uncomfortable doing it. You don't want to risk breaking the key.
      You could also take a can of paino cleaner, turn it upside down, spray and essentially let the metal inside contract, then take your key and attempt to turn it.

      +Roberto Sanchez I do absolutely appreciate your time man. Definitely a cool dude. I will get together with a buddy of mine. someone that has more patients than me lol an see if we can't take your steps to fix this. again it's a brand new ignition with key so why this happened a second time is beyond me. I try tapping/hitting while trying to turn the key for a solid 45 mins yesterday as this juts happened sunday. but no success. amazing how my f-F-Body is so much older yet works just fine.

    I ended up rounding the head of the pin just a bit to give it a larger radius. That and smoothed the gouge in the ramp just a tad. works smooth as butter. I think the lack of a radius on the pin is the primary culprit.

    • @ZLRob
      @ZLRob  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No I agree completely. I rounded the pin out myself as it initially has more of a point than a round shape to it. It coupled with the heavy tension the spring has is a very large contributor to the rutting. If you remove the ramp, round the pin, remove the plastic tab from the housing and remove one coil from the spring that should alleviate a lot of issues in there and return the vehicle back to a regularly functioning setup.

    what do i do if after i take off the ignition cylinder and the key falls out. it wont turn after i put the key in to turn for the pin insert

      Hey bro I've got the same problem right now, when I reinsert the pin with spring the key won't turn in the cylinder. Did you figure it out?

  • @ZLRob
    @ZLRob  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    What I am curious to is how the heck you managed to get the key out and have it in the off position. If memory serves me correctly you cannot move the key to the off position while it is out. I have since sold the car so I can't remember 100% its functions. Unfortunately if you want to pull the innard portion out the cylinder you have to release the retaining pin and spring in order to get access to everything.

    How the hell do I get the cylinder out if my key wont turn

    • @ZLRob
      @ZLRob  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really don't have a total solution to removing a key that is already stuck guys. As far as removing it is concerned there are several ways to tackle on that problem. One of the things you can do, is take a small rubber mallet and tap it as you attempt to turn it, preferably backwards, but if you want to modify the cylinder right then and there, the best way to turn it will be toward the ignition portion. That will then allow you to continue modding on as shown in my video. Another thing you can do, I believe, is take a can of air, turn it upside down and point the straw into the key hole. It will rapidly cool down the metal which has swollen allowing the cylinder to release the key. You could also try a can of good ol' WD-40 as well. Good luck guys!

    My key isnt stuck I just cant turn it from the lock position to the on or start position and my steering wheel is locked also

    • @ZLRob
      @ZLRob  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      This might sound like a stupid question, but have you tried moving the wheel while you turn the key? Sometimes you have to fight it a little but they both will free up. It almost sounds like it's functioning normally and it's just on steering lock.

    • @Matt893030
      @Matt893030 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have tried turning in both directions shaking the wheel and turning the key everything it will not turn

    • @ZLRob
      @ZLRob  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt893030 sometimes you just have to jerk the wheel and turn the key really hard. Keep trying, because that is definitely not normal. Can you actually remove the key or is it stuck on the off position with the wheel locked as well?
      If worse comes to worse take a small rubber mallet and tap it until you can turn the key, at which point you can switch it back to the off position and attempt to remove it again. I would suggest performing the mod once you get the key freed up.

    I do all this, but when i do what you do at 10:05 my key wont turn at all

    • @ZLRob
      @ZLRob  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does not turn. Hmm... you have to be doing something wrong here. Did you check the tumblers to make sure they are all good and still retained where they belong? Are you putting the assembly all the way back into the cylinder?

    • @dalton_carp
      @dalton_carp 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roberto Sanchez yes. i have taken the tumblers out and wd-40 the whole thing.. i took thw tumblers out and stuck it in and it would turn sometimes, sometimes it would be hard...i put them back in and i cant even get the part to go all the way in like you do at 10;05 so i have to stick it in as far as i can and take the key out and use a bobby pin to press down on the lever that lets it get in the cylinder. i have a phone number if you want me to private message you.

      I got so tired of it that I sold it after determining I needed a new suspension after just swapping out the previous one some 20,000 miles - 30,000 ago. 🤣 I was like, "yeahhhh... three transmissions, a suspension rehaul, a rear end, an ignition cylinder rehaul, AND I need to replace the suspension yet again when I JUST did it?!" Okay, I'm done now. To this day I never bought another GM, but hey, the pony power was INCREDIBLE!
