one thing that you should also do is clean your rim and pads of dirt. that will also interfere with good braking. depending on what brake pads that you use, youll want to file the build up on them and clean them. and also check for kinks in the lines and housing. overall great tips for people not knowing how to dial their brakes
Haha Sometimes I think so hard and try to go so in depth that I skip right over the simple and obvious things! Thanks a ton man! I’m gonna pin your comment so people can see it
Excellent video, solid tips from an experienced rider. It's probably a good idea to replace brake cables every year, or sooner if you're riding all the time. Oil can attract dust and grit, so I usually dismantle the brake levers and clean the nylon bushings, then assemble them dry. Keep riding!
I really appreciate your content on brakes. I’m always looking to make slight improvements on my brakes. Nothing is worse than your wheel slipping while doing a sketchy Fuf.
Man u have a clear way of explaining things and i like the news and tip videos and definitely the games of bike i don’t understand why you dont get more views?? Keep it up
Thank you, seriously. As long as I keep putting in the time to make videos, it’s people like you who can help that happen. Rome wasn’t built in a day I suppose
All great tips. All totally valid. I have an opinion on things from the design perspective, would love to see your thoughts on this. 990 brakes work today only with the advent of sticky rubber that lasts. The brake has very little power and relies on the friction more than the power. This means very poor modulation, and very squeaky brakes, and totally shit working brakes if not 100% clean all the time. To me, this is a giant fail in the BMX industry. The design is such, that the cable pulls a full 45 degrees away from the most efficient angle. This is somewhat offset by longer arms, but can only get so long before they are in a rider's way. The design was shit 30 years ago, and it remains shit today. Traditional calipers are far easier to get to work well, without super sticky rubber and constant cleaning, but today's frames aren't designed for them. I for one, keep my brake running non-squeaky so I can just modulate well in the bowls without all the drama. Limiting and frustrating, but squeaks are not an option for me. Totally unacceptable.
Thanks for the kind words! Now to the deeper part. I definitely think that there could be a better design, or at least some sort of innovation to make brakes better. The finish on my rear wheel is a great start. It makes my brakes work amazing and never need cleaned. Disk brakes could become a thing in bmx and Phil who works/worked at full factory had a frame and hub customized for it. He loves it. I could see it catching on as a niche for trail riders and maybe a few park riders without pegs. I for one would destroy the disks every other time I rode so it wouldn’t be practical for me. If anything happens it’d probably have to be either done by a niche person in the industry, or something universally accessible by everyone in every kind of riding. The problem is that there isn’t enough interest in brakes right now for any innovation to be had or invested in. Remember when freecoasters took off in popularity and then all of the sudden every single company had their own and companies like profile came up with coasters like the Z Coaster? The same thing is happening with steep top tubes and short rear ends right now. So many pro signature frames are being updated with new versions that have them. In order for brakes to see real change, they’ll need to become trendy in bmx. I see it coming, but who knows how long it’ll take. And even then, every company makes some already so I’m not sure if they’ll end up putting in the time/effort. 34R is doing awesome stuff though. I looked into their stuff today
Appreciate the input, interesting stuff. Design wise, as far as efficiency goes, we already have a good design that works properly, the V brakes like on BMX racing bikes. That is a proper design. I appreciate the style that brakeless has become. But it's very limiting and riders don't see it because they didn't grow up with brakes. To truly ride with abandon when thrashing the streets, there is nothing like both front and rear brakes. Being able to stop on a dime without drama filled skid action allows you so much more freedom. I'm going to look into getting a custom frame with V brakes, S&M does this. And how that would work with a gyro. I don't know about the front brakes though, not sure if V brakes are even compatible. I KNOW calipers work but I'm not dealing with the bolt sticking out like in the old days, NO WAY, lol. The saga begins.... Interesting that the finish you mention doesn't build dirt. Chrome rims are definitely in my future whatever direction I go.
I thought it was just me. I could never get my brakes to hold...I tried everything, I cleaned my rims daily with simple green, cleaned the pads, etc. And I didn't have internet back in the early 2000's, so I could only buy the pads at the local bike shop...which weren't sticky.
The biggest issue I see is with young kids who simply can’t mash on their brake levers hard enough to stop in time.....these brakes are already garbage and when placed into the hands of a child, the bikes become outright dangerous. I just ordered a new KINK BMX bike for my youngster and will be looking into everything possible to make braking as good as possible. Coming from the MX scene, where braking is INSANELY important and advanced, I’m shocked at how poor they are in BMX
Brakes will get an overhaul once they become popular again. They haven’t been “cool” for years now so there just hasn’t been as much of a push for putting the money into improving them
Mate, you should consider being a teacher. They way u convey the message is very very good. Keep up the good work. Had to give u a thumbs up and subscribed.
Thanks so much!! Its funny how I've somewhat become a teacher through these videos. In high school, my art teacher suggested I could become a teacher and I hated the idea! haha
Great tips! Do you have a pad suggestion for 80's side pull brakes? The Kool Stop clear flatlander pads work well, but they are SO loud....do you know of any pads that stop hard enough for flatland tricks but without so much very loud noise?
Unfortunately I don’t have an answer for you but if you’re on Facebook I know there are groups with people who will have an answer. The “Ride On Bmx” group is an example of a group that I would think could help
bought a WTP 21inch top tube message frame. bought there matching brake hardware the mounting posts going into the frame are different thread pitch and size have you heard or seen this yet?
I know it's not free but if you just got a beginner bmx you might wang to get a new lever and brake pads. It makes a HUGE difference. I recommend a Avid Mechanical lever ($5-$10 online) and some good pads Koolstops or Odyssey ($10 online)
No brake spring adjustment link at all on video just saying! Great video tuned up my se bike alot but definitely need springs adjusted have sloppy arms and there not right I just slapped them on
(1) use the strong springs for the odyssey evolver break (2) file break blocks (3) take the slack out the cables and keep tight (4) make sure your blocks hit the wheel the same time \m/
The 990 u brake on a cult juvenile 16 has no stopping power no matter how I adjust them. The level is hard to pull and if I lossen the cable a bit then there is no stopping. Any suggestions? I’m going to replace the pads with Slim By Four Pads from odyssey.
i just got a new kink bike and the breaks wont stop the bike and i cant get the back wheel to skid and i tightened the breaks alot and still wont work, its like the break pads are slippery
I also suggest having the entire brake pad make “first contact” with the rim because the “toe in” technique may cause your brake pads to twist due to the friction and angle of attack. The tow in technique creates more stopping power, but are more maintenance and a bigger head ache. If your brakes don’t have great stopping power when your pads are flat to the rims surface, I suggest carrying some simple green in a travel size bottle and a cotton rag to do a quick cleaning before each session.
i got my breaks all adjusted good and what not but they just dont want to grab good. they work but not as much as i would like, i want the tire to lock right up and not just slowly spin till i stop!
Hey ! thanks for tips. Is it normal my rear brake caliper could touch my tire during settings ? few years i rode brakeless, and it's first time I set up rear brake :/ i used a 2.40 andI changed to 2.125 and same problem on my Sputnic Skyline V3 frame : brake caliper is very near to my rear tire ! 1 week I work on. Many tips . thanks for your brake playlist videos, very usefull Brant ;)
It’s a common thing to run into yes. You may have to adjust things and tinker with it to get the brake arm away from the tire. Your brake pads are a good place to start. If you have the bigger spacer on the inside closer to the rim, it will bring the brake closer to the tire. Switching the smaller spacer to the inside will bring the pad away from the rim and allow you to adjust the cable so the arms are further from the tire.
I squeeze my lever super hard and i still can't get the pads to grip. I mean they get but not enough to do a Endo ive been using it for almost a week also any tips
I would try clear pads if you really want them to grip. They will make noise but they’ll work and you won’t have to pull the brakes as hard to get them to work
I dont do tricks with BMX my self, but i can wheelie over an kilometer easily onehanded. Im pretty good wheeling so i would like better brake so I dont wheelie over
Gyro brakes are absolute shit, the geometry and moment arms are all nwrong.. I had a Tuff Burner in the 80s with Dia Compe MX 100s0, I could pull an endo, stop on a penny In any weather. Just bought a couple of 80s BMXs with gyros ripped them off and fitted real brakes. Now my kids can stop instead of gradually slowing down over 50m.
😂😂 braking power is not determined by whether or not a gyro is present. It’s determined by the sum of all of the components used. A good setup with a gyro will always better than a badly set up straight cable and a good setup with a straight cable will always be better than a poorly done gyro setup.
@@Brant_Moore Brant, apologies, I've just re-read my comment. It wasn't aimed at you (although it may have seemed that way), it was just the gyro brakes in general. how do you stop the break pads from make huge scratches in the rim

Thanks

Which type of housing do you use? Linear? Basic slic?
Whatever the box of Jagwire housing is at Brimstone the shop I ride for! haha
Great info cool vid

Odyssey Slim By Four. But you gotta wait till the bike check tomorrow!

Awesome

Glad to hear it man!!!
#6 replacement of your spokes when the brake And I saw that broken one when your trying to trueing your wheel
This is a no cost list! Haha Spokes cost money. I need to put a new one in there though
I'm tuning up a BMX for my stepdad, and the brakes are gyro, but they don't work for some reason, the lever goes but the brakes don't move
