    I love the K-wing, and when people don't believe that the damn thing packed a quad turbolaser. "That's a capital ship weapon!" "That's the K-Wing, baybay!"

      it doesn't make any sense though, look at
      Star Wars Cutaway: DBY-827 Heavy Dual Turbolaser Turret or at the Disney's All Terrain MegaCaliber Six crossection.
      Look at how much space is required to install a turbolaser on a ship. I am aware that these are both heavy turbolasers but it still makes zero sense that a 16m long ship can have a reactor and sfoils able to handle the power required and venting ability to successfully use a quad turbolaser.
      Even quad heavy laser cannons would be unlikely but more in a realm of possibility.

      The Missile Boat is far superior to the B-Wing. Yes the B-Wing has better beam weapons than the Missile Boat, but good luck using them against a Missile Boat with its SLAM system properly utilised. In fact I would argue that, precisely because of the SLAM system, the Missile Boat is a superior starfighter to every other starfighter in the Star Wars Universe, with the exception of the K-Wing.

      Spartans would when. Personally I thin the Spartans could pretty easily beat any franchises human faction except WH40K Astartes. That is personal opinion. If they do not have the armor to withstand and/or the firepower to takedown, they lose to they guy(s) that do. Also in Lore Spartans are just unreal in their speed, strength, endurance, durability, accuracy, and so on. They are weaponized humans, not merely trained soldiers.

    • @survivor686
      @survivor686 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Systems Alliance Marines would beat the UNSC marines hands down: they have superior armour (full body ballstic mesh, plus ceramic armour and kinetic barriers/shields), superior weaponry (rapid-fire mass-accelerator canons even down to their side-arms), they have superior conditioning (the ME lore states that the average Alliance service-members undergoes gene therapy for improved strength and stamina)
      N7 Vs Spartan: That would be a tough fight. Both have technology and training that are roughly on par, though the average N7 would have access to gear that could short-circuit/overload the Spartan's gear (disruptor ammo, overload-pulse, arc-grenades), or hit them with the force of a freight-train (auto-tracking concussive rounds), or turn them into a fireball (see every explosive combo ever). It would be a close one, but I'd say the N7 would would beat the Spartan, as long as he avoided getting into a hand-to-hand brawl.
      Titanfall pilot: They'd just kill everyone with that damn Smart Pistol.

    I loved the firepower and the versatility of the B-Wing in the expansion for X-Wing vs Tie Fighter back in the 90s. I don't know how it compares to the newer K-Wing. The K Wing lacking a hyper drive is a problme but for raw fire power, it does beat out the B Wing. The B Wing can dog fight though. It wouldn't top that spot but it can defend itself and especially when escorted. I would like to play the K Wing in a game to see how well the 2 turrets would peel fighters off of its own back. Topics like that always makes me wonder:
    Is Star Wars a depiction of WW2, or is it an eternally frozen WW2?
    The OT gives the impression of a WW2 world (fighters becoming prominent but dreadnoughts still being prominent). You have dogfights and fighter aces and the incredible destructive power of lone fighters/bombers. It always seemed like a parallel to historical development, where enormous fleets of battleships became obsolete and carriers became the new tool to project power.
    On the other hand, both PT and ST have extensive dreadnoughts and carriers. If Star Wars really progessed, the Empire would have used the Venator, built some super-heavy carriers and concentrated on building better fighters.
    But they don't. Which leads me to believe that Star Wars is just magically frozen. Sure, dogfights are cool and showing a little fighter destroying a huge superdreadnought is David vs Goliath for modern times, but it also shows that Star Wars is less of an organic universe and more a background to show cool storiy archs on. Which robs it a bit of immersion/coolness to be honest.
    Which leads me back to the actual topic. Heavy bombers worked for a while, because the shifting circumstances opened a quick window of opportunity. The Boing Flying Foetress worked because of the ever changing circumstances of a world war, not because they were inherently superior. And even they had to shift from day-time raids to night raids. Whereas modern strategic bombers are less focused on being heavy (because a nuke isn't that heavy) and much more focused on stealth (because AA is much deadlier).
    But Star Wars simply ignores that. Instead of going more fighter focused, they just buid bigger dreadnoughts. Instead of building stealthier or quicker bombers, they build slower and heavier ones.
    It makes actual comparisons of combat effectiveness impossible, because it lacks internal logic.

    • @anthonyanderson1367
      @anthonyanderson1367 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It's a bit of a mix of WW2 and Vietnam(at least the OT is). The reason why the Empire decided not to make the Venator the mainstay ship was because it didn't fit the Tarkin Doctrine. Basically it wasn't scary enough and didn't hold enough weapons. "rule through fear of force, rather than through force itself." While the Venator was an awesome(in my opinion) force projector like you said, it wasn't really meant to be a battleship.

    • @hafor2846
      @hafor2846 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@anthonyanderson1367
      I get that. But that still lacks progress. E.g. Germany did not care much about carriers with their only carrier getting postponed further and further. So I could see the Empire being mired in a Tarkin-doctrine show-off with every moff wanting more and bigger battleships.
      And the rebels should win because of that. It actually makes the setting more believable. The corrupt empire ignores the new technology and the new modern rebels adopt it and defeat the old power.
      BUT in Star Wars, the design of battleships apparently stopped for several thousand years, evolved significantly for a few decades and then stopped or regressed.
      It's just a flaw, imo. Not a huge one, but still a plothole, sacrificed to the rule of cool.

    (Apparently not so) Quick genuine question. Are the bombers from The Last Jedi really that badly designed? They get a lot of shit for apparently being a massive downgrade, but they are clearly just the heaviest heavy bombers out there, considering how a single bomber was able to take out a dreadnought. And while the open bomb bay is a clear disadvantage, they were also clearly heavily armed and would probably serve the rebellion well. Their use against the Mandator was clearly simply a very risky attack, they were in over their head and it wasn't really the bombers fault (which I have seen so many comments claim) Just to make it clear, I'm not defending the movie as a whole, it has too many major flaws for me to do so. But I thought the bombers were fairly cool and believe this is just a case of people hating the movie and therefore looking for things to call bad. so yeah, long story short, were the bombers really that bad?

      The bombers themselves were not bad, but they weren’t the right ship for the job. I see those bombers more suited to a planetary bombardment role, in which they would do very well, but in episode 8 something like a b wing would probably be the better choice, but I don’t think the resistance had any available at the time.

    • @SultanFilm
      @SultanFilm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The bombers normally aren't meant for the way they were used. As the poster said before me, they are meant for bunker bursting and other roles. If you use them in the way they are meant for, then they do their job. But in the context they were used, it was set up to fail. Poe used them in the worst possible way.

    In my personal opinion I wouldn't consider the B wing a heavy bomber, it's a lot more of a heavy Starfighter, it's more than capable to hold it's own against a tie fighter or two, it's shields and relatively small profile makes it much better at fighter to fighter combat than a lot of other "bombers" I see the B wing as mix between a X wing and Y wing but that's just my take on it

    • @andrewrichards312
      @andrewrichards312 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad someone else gets it. The SLAM system is the most underrated starfighter system in existence in the Star Wars Universe and the Missile Boat was so badass that the Emperor had ti shelved while it was still in the field testing stage, until after the Battle of Endor, because he feared what the Rebels could do with them if they were able to mass-produce them. It's really sad just how many Star Wars fans aren't even aware of its existence.

    • @Blinks77
      @Blinks77 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrewrichards312 Well, my thinking has rather advanced in the time. Basically though, for the best of the best. The absolute elites you're better off with defenders, x-wings and such. Wedge, Luke, and the like can place a cannon bolt through a view screen. For everyone else? Missile spam levels the playing field hilariously.

    • @andrewrichards312
      @andrewrichards312 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Blinks77 Based on what you've said here, I'd question your definition of "advanced". It doesn't matter how good an elite pilot might be; the cannons on a starfighter are always going to have a limited range, far shorter than that required for a missile lock. The fact is that the SLAM allows a pilot of a Missile Boat to get just close enough to get a missile lock, unleash their payload and then fall back outside of even enemy missile range if they've managed to launch a missile at them at the same time. That's the thing here, the SLAM really does create an uneven playing field, where range really does become killer. The only way around it would be if you were to increase the range of both a ship's cannons and their targeting system to exceed that of the SLAM's range.
      Have you ever played TIE Fighter and experienced the SLAM system in dogfighting and combat firsthand, or are you simply basing your opinion on the SLAM and its effect on the battlefield on more detached observations?

    I always loved the Star Fortress. 1,000 proton bombs is hard even for the K-wing to complete in sheer destructive firepower. (Plus it has the turrets to defend itself, just like the K-wing). In addition to that, it can also be adapted very easily to a wide-range of non-combat roles, which in my opinion is a big thumbs up for a space force that doesn't have a lot of money to spend.

    "Legends" is how I came to Star Wars back in '91 with the Thrawn trilogy (which I'm currently rereading for, I think, the fifth time). I still find Zahn to be the best author in Star Wars (Stackpole being a solid second). But an EU book group sounds good, I've read every novel from the Thrawn trilogy up into the start of the Vong war (1991 to 2000ish). After that I'm a little spottier on my Star Wars novels outside Zahn ones.

As an H-60, but as you said the H-60 has a separate gunner cockpit, and the earlier images don’t show the s foil wing that this one has. It makes me think of if the decided to move the cockpit into the center of the B-wing’s body to make it easier for pilots to adapt to, but also added a bit more room for missiles and/or torpedoes

      @DWreck958 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The B-Wing arguably has better areodaynamics and maneuverability based on its design with the rotating cockpit. As well, the B-Wing had a superior weapons' system design to the ARC 170; multiple configurations, including one that could concentrate it laser weapons and single-handedly take down an Imperial Star Destroyer.
      Not sure how an ARC 170 would even compete in a 1v1 fight.
      ARC 170's were mass produced for the Clone Wars; many were lost. Where as the original B-Wings were designed in secret, during Star Wars Rebels, specifically for the Battle of Endor.
      Few were lost, if any at all, and were heralded as the difference maker in the battle. Not the Y-Wing squadron.

But they don't seem to do the same with fighters and bomber designations. Like the Star Fortress is a heavy bomber like the B-17, however the Y wing and B wing would be more considered a Fighter Bombers/ multirole fighters like the F/A-18 or a single seat attack aircraft like the A-10 or F-117a..
