- Todays video is a wild one. We headed out for bluefin tuna in our local waters in northern california. We started off the day slow but things heated up in the afternoon with non stop action!

Killer fish and yes power naps are a rule in. What kind of boat is it, How far out was the good water., I'm a commercial tuna fisherman I up here in Oregon but lived in Huntington Beach most of my life and worked on boats most of my life out of San Diego and Long Beach. Great job trading off the rod and killing it quickly

The Power Nap saved the day! It’s a 24’ Airslot and we were 30+ off the coast. It’s cool we reached someone all the way up on Oregon!! We always try to keep fresh hands on the reel, i think it helps keep our line real tight. That’s had to have been a major punch in the stomach! 5 hours and to watch the fish slip away is brutal!! Nice fish! Congrats. Quick tip - Fish alarm on while trolling ...AND - OFF while grinding one in.
Absolutely agree with you on the fish alarm! We only kept it on with newer anglers so we could hear what was going on, if we needed to step in and help out or give direction.
Wow! Epic. I am going to get one the rods you mentioned Penn Carnegie III 80-150 to pair with my Okuma Makaira 50s. Lastly, what brand of rod holders you have on the rail?
Nice man!! Sweet setup! The rod holders we were using aren’t the greatest to be honest. We are swapping them out, they kept rotating on the rail. If you can get some smiths, they are more expensive but probably better than the Amazon ones if you plan to fight the fish in the holder.
What an episode guys. Sick video. How are those rod holders working out for you? I rather get those rod holders then drilling holes in my north river.
Thanks man, one of our best days of the year! We liked the rod holders for that time being. Since this video, we mounted to fixed rod holder, like ones you would mount to the gunnel, on the rail and it works really great. If you watch some of our newer tuna videos you will see how we mounted the rod holders.

We didn’t, we thought about it but when we bulked up the transom there wasn’t a ton of room to build a fish well.

Epic! How far back were you running them. Down south we only do 150 yards.
Our line counter wasn't cooperating, I am not sure exactly how far our set back. We were probably about that range.
@@DDFishingCo guys keep posting 400-500 yard set backs up here. Seems absurd to me. My buddies in SD never go further than 200.

Awesome man glad to hear you are a fan! I would get a 20-30w for albacore. You can run smaller reels too if you are in a pinch. We caught them on little avets last year.

Thanks!! It was an epic day! We haven't used the mad mac 240 yet, I am sure it works, its a big ole bait. Big bait big fish? We look for life, birds, fish jumping, whales, any signs of life.
The rod we preferred was our big rod, a Penn Carnage III 80-150lb sized rod. We have used the Okuma PCH 60-100 lb size and its a little light for this application. One fish was caught on the 60-100lb sized rod.

Inland it is, but our coast is typically really foggy. Especially off the coast!

Thanks Chris, not a bad idea. The windows to catch those fish here are small. So we kind of take what we can get. I totally understand your thinking and where you are coming from. We will look into the population numbers and see what that looks like too.

I did a loop from Santa Cruz. 12 miles out near the fingers, it was 54F water and not blue. No signs of tuna or anything. I have never caught a Tuna but I am trying. I got a rod and reel for it and my little Whaler can get there if the weather is really nice.

The bag we used in the video was a buffalo bag from Amazon it was 40”x80”
Awesome video I’m sure it feels so good making it happen and getting those tuna in the boat. I don’t know if you ever considered it or if you even have a market that you can sell the fish to but whenever you catch a mix bag as far as size goes if it were me I would keep the small ones and then just sell the big one to help pay for the trip
Thanks Jake! We have to have a commercial license to sell fish, otherwise its a fantastic idea. You have to register your boat as a commercial boat, and you can no longer sport fish.

Guys, new to bluefin, what is the limit, isn't it 2 per boat per day? please school me on the limits cause I thought it was, thanks! great video but kinda wondering if you got checked by CDFW at the docks, did guys get wrecked back at the docks by fish and wildlife? Im sure everyone wants to know too, cause fines are upwards to $50,000, taking no chance on a spoiled adventure with fines that hefty

Just wanted to know what rods you were using and your personal opinion on the rods. Looking to purchase a rod but don’t want to spend over my budget.
We were using a penn carnage iii 80-150 rail rods, if you are going to troll they are great for fighting the fish on the rail.

The more line the better, the fish can take alot, I would get at least a 30W reel.

@@DDFishingCo Cool, It’s got 100lb braid. We went out the other day it was rough and had no luck. Hooked up on something huge that we fought for 30 minutes, only to realize we snagged a porpoise in the dorsal fin! Had to cut off a $50 lure, it was one hell of a fight though.

Thanks man! It was a blast! I think the info online is misleading. One site from a someone’s blog says 2 fish per boat per day. Charter boats, and 6 pack boats come in loaded with fish all the time. From the rules I can see from CADW I see 2 fish per day or 20 fish per day boat limits. I don’t get where the 20 fish comes from. But I do think it’s 2 fish per angler.
If that was true, fish and game is going to have a field day with the party boats in San Diego.

I'm from central Cali and fish San Diego 6 times a year. We never leave the rod in a holder or pass it off.
You fish for them jigging down there or trolling? Up here in Northern California we are pretty damn behind the boat. We also put the wood to these fish and get them in as fast as possible to keeping fresh hands on helps us.
