    My home game switched from D&D to DCC and we haven't looked back. It's just too much fun. The art is awesome, the Magic is crazy, mighty Deeds are super fun, Luck really work as a mechanic, the dice are funky - IT'S GREAT! We are on Session 9 of my home game and no one wants to go back to D&D. Also the community is fantastic and welcoming to newbies. Goodman Games and the Dungeon Crawlers Discord are always running beginner sessions. The starter First Time Fan bundle is a great deal, and gets you everything you need to get rolling!

      That’s awesome!!! I love when it’s backed by a supportive community. I can lol see how someone would choose DCC over D&D. I’m loving it so far.

    I've been playing DCC for the past five months or so, and I love it. I'm a player in a game where we each have two PCs, and I'm the judge for two games where the players have one PC each. Everyone has been a gamer (and has specifically played D&D since AD&D 2e came out), and we all appreciate how tight the classes are and how magic functions for Wizard/Elf and the Cleric. Very smart systems. It's also nice that all of the classes feel so different and focused, with truly interesting takes on older, classic abilities. Thanks for your review!

      Thank you for watching ☺️. I have always wanted to play a game of AD&D (which I thinking is 1e) & 2e. I hope to find some players interested in giving DCC a try soon.

    Empire of The East is mind blowing. The trilogy of novels from the 70's, I mean. It's epic! The setting didn't get much love but that just means that a Judge can add more to it to make it their own

    Mutant Crawl Classics is also a great game. It's the same game system except set in a world where a nuclear apocalypse happened over a thousand years ago and humanity has been reduced to the stone age but ancient technology gives magic-like power.

    (Sorry, I went on a bit here)
    My somewhat salty take: Dungeon Crawl Classics is like if someone said, "what if D&D was actually fun?" I've also said it "actually delivers on what D&D's amazing art from the 70s & 80s promised, but never delivered."
    I've been in the hobby since the 80s, and I've bounced off D&D every time I've tried to play it (I've played at least one session of every edition except for 4th). DCC is so close to D&D, yet whatever magic is in its sauce, it is actually fun to play in a way D&D never was for me.
    I think of DCC is as a "3rd Person" game as opposed to a "1st Person" one. In a lot of games I've played over the years, I've really tried to, for lack of a better word, inhabit my characters, to get into their thought processes, and to see the world through their eyes, etc. I still do a bit of that with DCC, but I lean more toward watching the character and seeing what insanity they get themselves mixed up in.
    I've played it a couple times and run it a bunch, and while I'm still learning some aspects, I really like it, overall. And there's SO much amazing community content out there, too. So far none of my games have managed to get anyone quite to 3rd level. I'm very curious what it looks like at higher levels. I sort of love that the game is very swingy, and there's a tendency to throw characters in over their heads. Heck, I had a group made up of zero, 1st, and 2nd level characters go through Sailors on the Starless Sea, and if it wasn't for a couple of super good rolls, they came close to a TPK. And that's a module meant for zero levels. Getting used to throwing encounter balance out the window is something DCC teaches time and again.
    The zero-level "funnel" adventures are wonderful. Instead of coming up with some background and trying to wedge it into the ongoing game, you literally play through your character's origin. And because there's so much randomness in both creating the zero-level characters and which ones make it out the other end of that funnel (if any), you can end up with very surprising and fun characters. The game also works well, as far as I've seen, with characters of multiple levels. I've had a player with a couple 2nd level characters take on a zero-level because they rescued a peasant from a monster. I had a group where one player had characters going from 1st to 2nd when another player joined with four zero-levels, and then as that new player's characters were heading into 2nd, a third player joined with four zero-levels. The mixed party worked just fine.
    Anyway, welcome. DCC is not my favorite game, but it's the closest thing to D&D I'd actually want to play. It's been a wonderful discovery after getting back into the hobby after a long break. I'm glad more folks are discovering it. And it seems to have a really good, mostly kind and generous community. Not to say there isn't toxicity; I'm sure there is. But so far, I've seen very positive folks in the DCC community.

    • @LegendsDiceCafe
      @LegendsDiceCafe  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I appreciate you perspective. I like the randomness of DCC. Forcing a player to step outside of the norm of what they would normally try. I love the simplicity of the system and the dangerous magic 🪄 system. I like D&D but I’m absolutely open to learning & trying out other systems. What systems do you play?

    • @matthewconstantine5015
      @matthewconstantine5015 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@LegendsDiceCafe I like a lot, and am usually up for trying most things. I tend not to be into level/class-based games, but even there, there are exceptions.
      If the ship was sinking and I could only take one game with me to a desert island, it would be Call of Cthulhu. Its core system, Basic Roleplaying, was my doorway into the hobby, and still one of my top systems. I haven't picked up the new edition of BRP yet, but plan to. I have several games other than Call of Cthulhu that use it, and I love 'em all. (There's also a lot of BRP in the new Free League release Dragonbane, which I want to pick up sometime).
      For newer systems, I really like the Year Zero Engine, especially in Tales From the Loop and the Alien RPG.
      A really weird one from the 90s that I love is Over the Edge 2nd Ed. I like it as is, but I've also used the mechanics to run some other stuff, including some Star Trek to great effect.
      I've only had a little experience with the Cypher System, playing a bit of Numenera, but I really liked it, and hope to try it again.
      If I'm in the mood for a really crunchy game, one that I love, but which is a major challenge to bring to the table, is Ars Magica. It's a game that has produced some of my all time favorite memories of the hobby, but which is a profoundly hard sell, where you need people to really buy in. I used to jokingly (sort of) say that it was a game where the players had to work as hard as the GM, and the GM had to work so much harder. But as much work as there was, it was so, so worth it.
