Great to see my book in your collection. We contribute because we love the game and it's wonderful to watch something like this where the enthusiasm and appreciation pours out of you. Thank you.
Thanks for watching! Love the book, excellent work!
Hey, thanks for the kind words!
@ChrisGonnerman My pleasure, thanks for noticing!! Also thanks for the awesome game!!!
BFRPG is such a good system and the community is amazing. I actually wrote an adventure that was included in the Adventure Anthology 3 because I love it so much ("The Cult of the Green Skull").
@Arcboltkonrad13 which one?
@@TheMotleyGM-ij6rq The Cult of the Green Skull
@Arcboltkonrad13 Great job my dude! That's a well written adventure!
@@TheMotleyGM-ij6rq Thank you! I had a good group IRL who helped me tweak it some here and there.
Absolutely fantastic! Thanks for spreading the word. Your channel is great BTW. More people need to see your work because it's excellent. Thanks for doing it!
Wow, thanks! Your support and kind words are very appreciated!!
Great overview! You said it so well, people gifting their work or art make a game vome together is the lifeblood of this hobby and they should absolutely get credit for that!
I adore Basic Fantasy. The fact I can run AD&D games with minimal conversion is amazing. The fact it's kept free and available makes it a quality entry point for OSR and TTRGPs.
Barklings, for that special GM who hates dogs
In a world that exploits everything what Chris has created is so pure. Thank you to everyone who contributed and plays it
great video, subbed! BFRPG deserves such praise. people sometimes criticize the varied and "amateur" art, but as you stated, it embodies the full community approach and affordability! Really appreciate your comments on supporting arts. Was the first book i purchased few years ago when i discovered ttrpgs. Side Note: the Wilderness Exploration supplement on the downloads pages is amazing and very worth a look!
I see that criticism a lot. "The art isn't consistent". I LOVE when multiple artist get in volved. Sure, you'll get some so so piece's but who cares. I've seen books with 'consistent' art and sometimes it is amazing! But other times it will come out cooperate and boring. I used to love the 3rd edition art until I noticed how very brown everything was. I once had a White Wolf book I thought looked pretty good then I noticed every picture was some vaguely humanoid thing posing in the dark. The upcoming 6TH EDITION of D&D (There. I said what everyone is thinking) looks like the art will be people shopping and poising and never being in any real danger. This is what can happen with 'consistent' art. Unless your some kind of Erol Otus then give me multiple artists with their own style. The way Magic the Gathering used to be way back in the 90's. Give me verity.
Hands down my most recommended option for fantasy TTRPG.
What caught my eye was the Manix 2 with Magnacut and AWT scales. Good build and good video! Nice to see a crossover with OG rpg and knives!
It's actually S110v steel on that blade...magnacut would be sweet though...
Nice review. Basic Fantasy is the best bang for the buck in the OSR. It was my first dive into retro-clones. I still love it.
I love that they added things like the Druid to this game! So much content to find
New sub - great summary of an awesome game.
Welcome aboard and thanks!!
Awesome!
Great video just subbed
Awesome thank you!
I hope you make this series into a playlist.
Done!
Good video. I always point newbs to Basic Fantasy. It's the best place to start in the OSR, the bang for buck is incomparable and because of the cross-compatible nature of the OSR all of the supplementary material is still worthwhile even if you don't land on BF for your D&D fix.
When 3E BF went to 4E, it was done primarily as a reaction/to get away from the OGL. That being said 35 pages of content were added to the game, mostly in the form of new monsters and illustrations (the Barkling being the example in the video). They also reframed Dragons, naming them after their environment rather than coloration (Mountain Dragon instead of Red Dragon, Swamp Dragon instead of Black Dragon). There were likely numerous other changes and tweaks I haven't noticed yet. I think this was making the absolute best of a bad situation, adding flavor to the game while divesting it from OGL wording. So even if you have a physical copy of 3E it's worth the couple bucks it costs to get the updated physical copy, and I appreciate that.
Well said! Thanks
Nice video!
Thanks!
BFRPG is one of the best OSR systems. It’s based on classic D&D and with its supplements it has enough flexibility to be a better B/X or a more streamlined AD&D. I’m running Barrowmaze with it right now and it’s been a great time.
Good that you are putting spotlight on other games. Always appreciated. I own and have tried Basic Fantasy. I can definitely see the appeal to first time and long time players. For me, it was a little too basic (pun intended) then I want to go. But I am so glad that it exists. The freedom of doing whatever you can think of instead of being locked into a skill set or action choice is always great.
My group switched to basic fantasy from 2e 6-7 years ago and never looked back.
Well said!
I quit today playing DnD 5e with a group I played as a player for last year and half. Got really exhausted by long combat, low player agency etc. Will try OSR and Basic fantasy can be it. Thank you.
I have owned Basic Fantasy for a while but it is on my list yet to play. I am more of an OSR bibliophile.
A bit of a bibliophile myself1
The best D&D alternative, and not only because it is free. It's also really good. And if you don't like something, just download the file and edit it yourself.
@@sharpmountaingames9303 You certainly get it!!
I gave the core rule book to my players. I even give them away when I'm at a Con if the Con has door prizes. I have no problem giving 4 or 5 of the books to a Con.
Is this too advanced to one that never played RPG before?
Absolutely not! Easy to pick up and play. Lots of help from the community!
@@ragingmages7879 Nope!
Love BRP ideas, the system, not so much.
basic fantasy rpg has replaced DnD as my go to system for light fantasy.
@modus669 heck yeah bro!
Why would I switch from BECMI (which I’ve been playing for 37 years) to a game that is clearly a knock off of it?
You are somewhat right, BFRPG is a retro clone that organizes and streamlines b/x and becmi. If you like your gaming experience by all means continue. You could probably use the adventure anthologies or bestiary though. All for free in pdf form!
