    Hey, Mr. Turner.... thank you for responding to my question. This was VERRY helpful to me. When I was analyzing camera options, I knew about "the sensor" in a camera being important, but I forgot about how important it is. I saw all of the different controls on the HM 170u and got blown away... forgot all about "the sensor". I, of course bought my HM-170u months ago. I'm going to play around with it, see what all I can do with it. I'm also looking at other options again before I shoot my next 4 feature films including the Cannon M50. Thank you again for taking the time to answer my question, and... you did a great job with my name! Thanks!

      G L Hey, how you doin? I was told years ago not to use a DSLR for making a feature film. However, I never experimented with one to find out for sure what the reason is. I think I know why those people said that to me but before I share it publicly I'm going to experiment with one. I am still learning how to use this JVC hm170u. I can tell everyone this: the JVC is difficult when trying to achieve a "film look" outcome... but not impossible. What Mike Turner said is accurate, in that the M50 (DSLR's) have better sensors. But the jury is still out on whether I would risk it for a feature. I'll let everyone know in the months to come.
      Have you used a DSLR for extensive videotaping?

    • @glpro2696
      @glpro2696 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      johari nichols I’m looking forward for the results!
      I believe things like poor autofocus,image stabilization and small batteries and also the price keep people on a distance with DSLRs. I’ve used in the past the canon t3i and I was happy with the outcome,but maybe it’s time for an upgrade to m50 😋

    • @joharinichols2652
      @joharinichols2652 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, it depends what you're shooting. Like Mike said, if you're shooting weddings or maybe a small music video, then the t3i might still work for you. The M50 isn't bad for those things based off of what I'm learning so far. I am definitely not against DSLR's. I'd like to hear what Mike Turner would say about those two types of DSLRs.

    I own the JVC GY-HM170 and after changing the settings and using an external monitor. I got the best quality I could squeeze out of this camera. One of the key factors of achieving the best quality is lighting and illumination. Along with the best settings depending on the project being captured.

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This camera definitely needs light more than some others, but i guess they all do to achieve the best results. I agree though, if you take time to light and tinker with the settings, it is impressive for the money. There is so much to tweak.

      I've owned the JVC Ls300 for over a year now. I've shot a few commercials with it and a whole lot of weddings. I feel the film look is possible. Also i forgot to mention the film look is also achieved with fluid motion. Slider, dolly and jib shots. It isn't totally dependent on the camera. But a good camera with a sensor larger than 1/2" doesn't hurt:)

    Would you recommend the blackmagic pocket cinema camera for recording music video? Another question, if you don’t recommend or even if you do, what other camera would you recommend for shooting music videos.

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's really hard for me to say because I don't shoot music videos and I have never shot one. However that won't stop me from having an opinion. I would say that it would be good for it, but you will need to have a battery solution in place because the battery life on all of them is extremely poor, and you would probably need an external monitor too since you can't move the screen around. Other than that, there is an excellent menu system that makes things fast and easy, excellent image quality, and pro-res files which make editing easier. It's certainly not a bad camera. At the same time you could shoot a music video with any other good cinema camera or good mirrorless camera like a gh5. Gh5 would be pretty good because of the 10-bit internal recording, better battery life, and flip screen. That's if you don't care to use an external monitor. Check out YCIMAGING youtube channel. He shoots music videos.

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The gh5-s has better image than quality but the gh5 is still really good too from what I've seen. I'm sure if you do a search you will find music videos shot on both. At the end of the day, it's all about the lenses and lighting. Most modern cameras can produce really good images

    great video on the JVC 170U! Like you, I've sort of had a love/hate relationship with the camera. It indeed does have its limits in low light etc and everything that you mentioned. I shoot mostly live concerts and audition videos for high school musicians. The limited dynamic range is my biggest problem with the camera. Bright stage lights on white shirts against dark shadows....big problem. I got so frustrated that I ended up buying a GH5 and and Blackmagic PCC4K. But I still have not given up on the JVC and use it mostly for my wide safety cam wideshot at the back of the hall. A few times when I made really big errors in exposure and focus with the GH5 and the Blackmagic (those cameras are really great but if you don't know what you're doing they will amplify your errors big time...need to really know your stuff with those) the jvc has come through and saved the day for me. @joharinichols, what I found was a big help was that another youtube shooter really went deep into the menus and tweaked out the camera to make a really flat pseudo-log color profile that maximizes the dynamic range and color. With a lot of color grading, I have been able to mix in the footage of the jvc with footage from GH5 and Blackmagic and it has been able to hold its own if you use it just right. Here's the link to the video with the great settings:

    What would be the difference between the Sony z90 and the Jvc cam

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For starters the sony has 1 inch sensor as opposed to the 1/2" in the JVC. It also has a better image processor, so it has better overall image quality and low light performance. It also has better autofocus. I believe it also comes with more than 1 log mode for color correction. It also has the clear image zoom feature for extended zoom with no loss in image quality. And it has live streaming. To get live streaming on the jvc, you would need to step up to the hm200. Those are some that i think of off the top 😀

    This response is 3 years in the making :-) I appreciate everyone's responses to my question. G L Pro, Mike, StuCameraman1.... The JVC 170u can be used to make a "cinematic" looking movie... it can. The problem with that camera... It Is Horrible in low-light situations. That's the main negative with that cam.
    You only want to use a DSLR cam for filmmaking, if you have no other options. It's ok under those circumstances. Just remember, the DSLR was intended to replace the old Kodak, Fuji "still photography" film cameras we used to use in the 80's. The DSLR was not intended for continuous filming. That's why overheating and audio are challenges with those. One other thing to mention, very important. Film Look, is in the eye of the beholder these days. If you were born in the past 21 years, a great film look is what us older ones call, great high def look. To us older ones, a "film look", is something that looks close to 16 or 35mm film. Thank you to everyone who took an interest in my question 3 years ago.

  • @bardofhighrenown
    @bardofhighrenown 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    In my experience the single biggest contributor to the "film look" is actually framerate and shutter speed. Locking in on a 24fps with a 1/48th shutter speed that goes a long way to achieving it, but of course depth of field is also really important.

    Almost any camera can be used to film cinematic images you just need to know how to use them. I started with actual 16mm and super8 film, when I transferred to digital I had to relearn how to shoot as opposed to film. I eventually was able to achieve shallow depth of field on those smaller chips and even rack focuses. It just takes patience and practice!!

    the famous "bokeh" "essential for any filmmakers" it's just bullshit; just watch 60's movies like Blow Up, La notte or even Eyes Wide Shut, or some Terry Gilliam movies are shot nearly zero bokeh, it's mostly wide angle, Bokeh is just some cliché thing that wannabe filmmakers use, never forget that Festen was shot with a Camcorder and is still one of the greatest masterpiece ever made, and same for 28 days later, so if this camera can do manual stuff, if you have good lighting, a good script and great actors you can shot with anything even Iphone if you like.

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It isn't essential at all. I know for my wedding films, I like having little shallow depth of field here and there. I think it makes things look dreamy for lack of better words. Certainly not necessary though.
