      Not only FD lenses but most film SLR lenses were obsolete and worthless before mirrorless. Many see an end through years of neglect, thrown away, destroyed by haze, fungus, other optical or mechanical problems. Besides Nikon's F mount lenses, decent condition legacy SLR lenses are fewer in between, and the good ones left are mostly worth more now then in the past.

    The FD lenses were ones of the pinnacle lenses back in the day. Just remember 180mm 1.8f... 85mm 1.2f FD is still regarded as one of the best 85mm lenses even to todays standards. Same goes for 135mm 2f. 55mm 1,2f nFD is very sharp and optically well made lens, one of the best in the vintage class...

    I've been having a grand time using these vintage 50mm lenses with a Techart-Pro adapter. I finally managed to get a used Techart for around $150 (What i consider a reasonable price) and it can focus nearly as fast as a standard FE lens. Really enjoy using fast AF on lenses from the 1960s

    A great review, as usual, and a walk down memory lane.
    I got a job as a newspaper photographer after graduating from High School. The FD 50mm f1.2L, FD 135mm f3.5, and Canon FTb were never more than a few steps away for many years. The 135mm got rescued by police divers after it got dropped into Lake Washington during a Hydroplane Race. Years later, they, An F-1 and a few more pieces added over the years were all sold off to a gentleman in the Ukraine. Sometimes I miss film .., but not very often.

    I reckon that people who get this sort of lenses, simply want a genuine vintage feel in their captures. And notice the build quality in that era? Dear me, amazing. My grandfather had a few of these lenses but in 2000 from his time as photographer. Sadly he sold them all in that time, otherwise I would be very happy now 😊

      I’d look at lens construction before the f value if it’s only by 0.2 stop value slower. IQ is far more important than bokeh for me. As long as there’s bokeh majority of people appreciate the image.

    I'm loving the attention you are putting into vintage glass! I just bought some old Pentax lenses (easly adaptable to EOS DSLRs, APS-C at least) and I'm surprised by it's quality (the 35mm f2, specially). The lack of telecentric design in older lenses is becoming more important over time, apparently, since the ramping up of megapixel count in modern sensors.

    Great review as always Chris and good to see how it fairs on the Digital R.
    I am getting into film photography in a big way and putting these on a 1980's body loaded with Ilford Delta is giving wonderful 80's "style and feel" photographs that make the easy to use R and R6...... boring :-)
    It is great to be able to offer a so called vintage option to portrait clients along side the clinically clean digital.
    Clients are intrigued at first & then liking the "softer" film options as an alternative, especially the black and white.
    Any hoos I wish you well and keep up the good work sir.

    Hey Chris, I need your expertise on FD lenses. Remember there were a few lenses that were stamped "Aspherical" on the front of the lens generally fetching a premium price, & in some instances higher then an "L" variant (fd 50 1.2 L & fd 55 1.2 Aspherical) as an example. Is the 50 1.2 L the same as the 55 1.2 Aspherical, or does the Aspherical have better glass than the L counter part?

      @caldera878 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even Canon themselves doesn't want capability with FD lenses on EF mount bodies because FD lenses were never a real system to take on Nikon's F mount/lenses which were used by professionals. Canon ditch FD mount and basically obsolete them and the same time screwed up FD users.

    • @jacobnathanielzpayag3885
      @jacobnathanielzpayag3885 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@caldera878 What do you mean not wanting EF compatibility? FYI the FD system one of the largest full manual lens system. Canon even provided adaptors back when they made the EF system and FD cameras were in production well into 1993. The EF transition was to design a fully electronic system because autofocus became the next big thing for cameras. Nikon for years had to build much larger and bulkier bodies to fit AF motors in them and that is no match to Canon's USM.

    That 50mm f/1.2 L series lens is one of the sharpest lenses in the world. That and the Nikon 58mm f/1.2 “Noct Nikkor. These lenses are fully the equal of Leica R and M light giants. Interesting how small and light lenses used to be despite the big aperture, and even metal construction. I can see why people buy these lenses just to get the character that is unlike anything we see in modern lenses that are ultra clean. And manual focus is probably not a problem for more serious "amateur" film makers as they probably aim to mimic Hollywood films that don't use AF.
    It would be nice to see some photos of the image quality compared to a modern lens, not pixel peeped but overall image quality.

    • @KratasCRAFT
      @KratasCRAFT ปีที่แล้ว

      The flange distance, the EF bayonet is further away from the sensor than the original FD one, therefor if you found a way to mount it, you wouldn't be able to focus to infinity. some other vintage lenses work on DSLRs just fune (Leica R, old Nikon F and M42 glass is particulary easy, although the last one doesn't work on Nikon DSLRs, because of the flange distance.) Mirrorles cameras are better for adapting vintage glass, since the flange distance is small, so you can even adapt most rangefinder lenses.

    How come it wouldn’t work with a regular ef to fd adapter?

    • @greenpenguin8699
      @greenpenguin8699 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s how most FD lenses I have behave. The EF-FD adaptor I have has a glass element to correct for flange distance and it works fine albeit some distortion and contrast issues. I have a 50 f/1.4, 35 f/2.8, and a 135 f/2.8 which all focus to infinity fine. I’m just curious if I were to buy this lens, is there anything unique about it that my other lenses don’t possess that would prevent me using it on my ef camera?

    • @caldera878
      @caldera878 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never why people want to use the awful FD mount lenses on the superior EF mount/lens. Canon ditched FD for a good reason in 1987 and made sure to limit capability as much as possible.

    "Character," is the only thing older lens have over the newer tec. advance lenses! I've yet to see a lens manufactured before the nineties that is better than its modern counterpart. They are often fun to shooting but in most cases poor in comparison to even the modern kit lenses.

  • @andgainingspeed
    @andgainingspeed 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    No surprises here. A lot of old glass can't compare to modern glass, but they are fun and usually don't come with a crazy price. The best of the legacy glass can have reasonably sharp corners stopped down. My favorite 50s are the Super Takumars. Nice bokeh and color pop. Tried a Canon FD 50mm f1.8 recently on a 42mp sensor and it was okay, but not special like the Taks or SMC that followed.

    I've been using some old medium format Pentax 645 lenses adapted to my EOS R. The larger image circle means that the sharpest portion of the lens is being used. I use a Fotodiox TLT ROKR adapter and also get some tilt and shift function. BTW, Margaret Thatcher was a god send during the cold war. I'd hate to see where Britain would be had she not been the rock she was.

    I am pretty sure the copy of that lens was not right. I had a copy that had taken some hard beating and modifications BUT after a good service it was MUCH better than the one you have shown here. It is one of the perfectly usable F1.2 lenses from its time. The one you tested is unusable to me at F1.2 and that is on Canon sensor. I have used mine on Sony which is bad for most vintage lenses because of the fat glass in front of the sensor. You have to try another copy maybe.

    Here I have some big size test shots from my copy. It was with scratches on the rear element because of EOS modification by the previous owner, some parts were not the original ones, ... it couldn't be worse.

      @@aceflibble The FDn 50 1.2 L has not other versions. It is what it is :). And age is rarely the problem, most of the time it is bad service during the years. If someone with no experience decides to "fix" something small it can be devastating in the end. Everything matters here. It can be even reverced rear element which was at first the case with my copy. The ex owner decided to assemble it back after a cleaning and the lens was unusable before F5.6. I took it to a cla master and he did what he could to fix the years of beating and modifications (it was converted to EOS in a bad way). Ths is what I can tell you based on my experience.
