      Yeah, the custom seems pretty strange to us. But I guess it made sense to them.

    is it because that the lands are given by inheritance as set by Jacob to the individual tribes and their families..?

      I think that's along the right lines. Look at how many provisions are made for this. Another example: land was never supposed to be sold in perpetuity, but would always go back to the original family every 50 years in the Jubilee.
