I use Krita. The large variety of brushes makes it really simple to create textures for you backgrounds, like if you want to add grass, clouds, water lines, a frickin mountain, etc, there's a brush for that. It works good for short animations, too.
I love krita as a drawing software. Though with the animation software I find the whole frame system so time consuming to use. Also the layers in the animation section of krita are weird
Actually, there are LOTS of problems in Flipaclip, like the lack of brushes and of the stabilizer. I mean, it is great, but it is really simple. I’d rather use Krita or export tons of png. files drawn on another programs (like MediBang, that is free) and export to a video editing program like Blender

as a regular Krita user, I haven't tried the animation feature but I'm going to try it because if I'm going to be able to animate with the same program I use for drawing regularly, I will be very happy

This video is so helpful! I just got my first drawing tablet so I can finally move on from Flipaclip and I was a little daunted by trying to find the right programs. Most of the big animators and artists I tend to see use Paint Tool Sai or Photoshop and Toonboom or Adobe Animate, but I'm only animating as a hobby, I'm not getting money from it so I can't really afford those. This video just lays everything out for you and shows how each of these apps compare to Adobe. Honestly I was a little shocked by how much they can do. Thanks for making this so much easier for us beginning animators 😊
You can also pirate photoshop like me and some other people did but i dont really recommend doing that. So yeah, getting one of these free softwares is a pretty great idea!

@ThatOneSunsetWolf you can use it as an animation app. Just make sure to use a different layer each time, you can also change the layers transparency, there's also ways to tween frame by frame or just on a simple editing app like cutecut or kinemaster. ☺

You have changed my life! I was looking for another animation app that could do tweening unlike flipaclip pro (my current animation software) and opentoonz is just what I’m looking for!
My journey towards digital art has been so daunting (along side so much life stuff) it hasn't really even started, sadly. I've recently acquired the tools I wanted to start with (laptop, drawing tablet), now I wud just like to find some like minded ppl to learn with/from so this transition from traditional art isn't so much like 'jumping into a blackhole'. Brad, Ur presentation (regardless of what the video pertaining) always has an uplifting feel to it, so I guess what my rant boils down to is: "THANX!"

Hi, I've been using Flipaclip at present & am excited about using their ability to animate over video clips and add sound. I love how their pencil tool actually can work like an airbrush if you adjust it, anyways, I'm wonderin if you can use these awesome apps you are showing us to animate over videos frame by frame or whatever? @@tab2022 I have downloaded it on a few old lap tops but it definitely worked better on my phone. But who knows it might be better now, look into it, it's a fun way to animate and you can draw over video frames!
The only issue with free animation tools is that they normally lack a lot of features of the paid's ones. Which is fine and all but if you really want to get deep into animating then you are going to want to learn a proper suite eventually, which means you might be doubling the learning time. But yeah, for determining if you really want to get into animating then free apps are great!

Do Blender, Do it, just do eet! I want to see you do 2D in 3D with your nifty digital pen and draw board. It still 2D even it is made in a app that is known for making 3D, it is also a animation tool, video editor and a porthole into the future.
Mischief MakerStudios Blender is a 3D software, so an IPad wouldn’t be able to handle it. Anyway, you can use Flipaclip or pay for Windows’ simulator in order to use Krita

for many of these frame by frame apps where you draw each frame, is there some option to duplicate the previous frame, and simply add a little to that...rather than drawing the whole object again? Just curious

Just a thing, I wanted you to know that you can also make 2D animation in blender, you have to click file➡️new➡️2d animation. But I don't know if it's good because I have not explored it fully yet
I tried OpenToonz, and it was very confusing for me. 1.) The tools are confusing. 2.) I don't know how to change the texture of the brush. 3.) I can't find the layers. 4.) Whenever I draw on the paper, it first pixelates it and then draws it as a normal brush would. If anyone would tell me something about OpenToonz, then I'm open.

Hey brad! i just wated to let you know that there's a *new* animation software thing called Wick Editor. It has symbols, tweening, video exports, a built in vcam, and it also has a code editor.
But the more expensive version, the EX, as the Pro is very limited. I have it, and I believe is just some seconds of animation allowed. The ability of handling many comic pages, or the more advanced 3D features, and exporting to epub formats, is not stuff I need for now, but the ability of importing a PSD WITH layers, instead of flattened to one, when it is a CMYK mode file (a regular RGB PSD layered comes in with layers)... heh, yeah, that's a reason enough for me wanting the EX in the next discount offer. A client sends u a such file, and is a ton of rework or impossible mission. I use CSP for absolutely all my sketching, inking and painting, tho. Is the absolute best for me in that. That said, twice a year the Japanese company makes a 60 or 40% discount of all products, one only needs to be in a newsletter or sth to be aware and fast. Still, I voted up the comment.
Clip studio does have some cool animation features, it reminds me a lot of how it's implemented in Krita. Also I have the cheaper version of CSP so I'm a bit limited in what I can do with it.
@@thebradcolbow Actually, it seems both were more or less implemented at same time, I mean more or less the anim features were added in both around 2015/2016. But celsys had a really longer experience in the past with animation software. That said, Krita's first beginnings in general are really old, around 1998 ( ain't much younger CSP, aka manga Studio before, and aka Comic Studio before that, csp saw the light in 2001) , if I'm not wrong. But only got promotion, and released in the usable and more complete and solid status as we today know just a few years ago. As a standard tool, fully functional since day one, for comics and other illustration, Manga Studio is way older, in that sense... I'd be inclined to think Krita got the inspiration - if they got it from somewhere- from CSP, not the opposite situation. Krita does that, tends to implement stuff , tho quite differently than the original, stuff, features that they seem to perceive as best implemented in A or B package, and get the idea from those. My 2 c, tho.
Personally I began using krita, and I binded a key on my pen to create a new frame so whenever I wanna make a new frame I just hit a button and boom, new frame!
When i was in my early 20s (i am in my mid 40s now)i took a course in traditional animation (we are talking pen and paper a video camera), just because i love animation and want to know how it was done. I was looking up something for my friend and your vid came up. Made me think maybe i should try animating again. Just to do something to kill time. So thank you for the idea and list of sodtware. Um, I’m on an iPad trying to animate, I currently use FlipaClip and figured out it’s not the app I want to use. I saw Pencil 2D and really wanted to try it, but when I search it in the App Store it ain’t there? Is it just for pc?

Hey, have you heard of Maya, 3DX max and 1CLORE? Does blender allow you to do voice overs, make videos and lip sync in the program as well? I want it to be user friendly. I use adobe character animator.

OpenToonz was used by Studio Ghibli (animators of Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke) and also used to animate the Anastasia Film.
Just the fact that studio ghibli uses that software makes me feel comfortable enough to try it out ❤

Just a thing, I wanted you to know that you can also make 2D animation in blender, you have to click file➡️new➡️2d animation. But I don't know if it's good because I have not explored it fully yet

Any good ones for the Android? Is Krita good for animation especially after 5.0?
I tried OpenToonz, and it was very confusing for me.
1.) The tools are confusing.
2.) I don't know how to change the texture of the brush.
3.) I can't find the layers.
4.) Whenever I draw on the paper, it first pixelates it and then draws it as a normal brush would.
If anyone would tell me something about OpenToonz, then I'm open.

Hey brad! i just wated to let you know that there's a *new* animation software thing called Wick Editor. It has symbols, tweening, video exports, a built in vcam, and it also has a code editor.
Clip Studio Paint frame-by-frame all the way. :D

But the more expensive version, the EX, as the Pro is very limited. I have it, and I believe is just some seconds of animation allowed. The ability of handling many comic pages, or the more advanced 3D features, and exporting to epub formats, is not stuff I need for now, but the ability of importing a PSD WITH layers, instead of flattened to one, when it is a CMYK mode file (a regular RGB PSD layered comes in with layers)... heh, yeah, that's a reason enough for me wanting the EX in the next discount offer. A client sends u a such file, and is a ton of rework or impossible mission. I use CSP for absolutely all my sketching, inking and painting, tho. Is the absolute best for me in that. That said, twice a year the Japanese company makes a 60 or 40% discount of all products, one only needs to be in a newsletter or sth to be aware and fast. Still, I voted up the comment.
Yes, but it's not free. Else, Animate is better in term of animation.
Clip studio does have some cool animation features, it reminds me a lot of how it's implemented in Krita. Also I have the cheaper version of CSP so I'm a bit limited in what I can do with it.
@@thebradcolbow Actually, it seems both were more or less implemented at same time, I mean more or less the anim features were added in both around 2015/2016. But celsys had a really longer experience in the past with animation software. That said, Krita's first beginnings in general are really old, around 1998 ( ain't much younger CSP, aka manga Studio before, and aka Comic Studio before that, csp saw the light in 2001) , if I'm not wrong. But only got promotion, and released in the usable and more complete and solid status as we today know just a few years ago. As a standard tool, fully functional since day one, for comics and other illustration, Manga Studio is way older, in that sense... I'd be inclined to think Krita got the inspiration - if they got it from somewhere- from CSP, not the opposite situation. Krita does that, tends to implement stuff , tho quite differently than the original, stuff, features that they seem to perceive as best implemented in A or B package, and get the idea from those. My 2 c, tho.

Personally I began using krita, and I binded a key on my pen to create a new frame so whenever I wanna make a new frame I just hit a button and boom, new frame!

When i was in my early 20s (i am in my mid 40s now)i took a course in traditional animation (we are talking pen and paper a video camera), just because i love animation and want to know how it was done. I was looking up something for my friend and your vid came up. Made me think maybe i should try animating again. Just to do something to kill time. So thank you for the idea and list of sodtware.

Um, I’m on an iPad trying to animate, I currently use FlipaClip and figured out it’s not the app I want to use.
I saw Pencil 2D and really wanted to try it, but when I search it in the App Store it ain’t there? Is it just for pc?
