I was curious to see what animation apps where out there that might replace Adobe Animate in my animation workflow. To make things more interesting I decided to only look at free apps and to my surprise there is some pretty good stuff out there. Here is my list of free animation apps that have a lot to offer like frame by frame animation, tweening, easing in and out even custom drawing brushes.

as a regular Krita user, I haven't tried the animation feature but I'm going to try it because if I'm going to be able to animate with the same program I use for drawing regularly, I will be very happy

I just ordered a drawing tablet yesterday and it already arrived, so thanks, this video a great help to animate on my laptop.
Because of the clarity with Which you structure your videos I am subscribing to you immediately every single tutorial video should break down what they're gonna do like this to save us all the headaches of scouring TH-cam for the wrong videos in fact every video should have its List of contents included right on the front page well done sir

Actually, there are LOTS of problems in Flipaclip, like the lack of brushes and of the stabilizer. I mean, it is great, but it is really simple. I’d rather use Krita or export tons of png. files drawn on another programs (like MediBang, that is free) and export to a video editing program like Blender

@jawd6715 sprite animations and more flipaclip *is* for pc *and* mobile
I use Krita. The large variety of brushes makes it really simple to create textures for you backgrounds, like if you want to add grass, clouds, water lines, a frickin mountain, etc, there's a brush for that. It works good for short animations, too.
I love krita as a drawing software. Though with the animation software I find the whole frame system so time consuming to use. Also the layers in the animation section of krita are weird
Is it good for long animations? along with fighting ones?

This video is so helpful! I just got my first drawing tablet so I can finally move on from Flipaclip and I was a little daunted by trying to find the right programs. Most of the big animators and artists I tend to see use Paint Tool Sai or Photoshop and Toonboom or Adobe Animate, but I'm only animating as a hobby, I'm not getting money from it so I can't really afford those. This video just lays everything out for you and shows how each of these apps compare to Adobe. Honestly I was a little shocked by how much they can do. Thanks for making this so much easier for us beginning animators 😊

You can also pirate photoshop like me and some other people did but i dont really recommend doing that. So yeah, getting one of these free softwares is a pretty great idea!

I was looking for some software to do 2D simple animation for my tiny business.
Question, whats the best animating software you used? Curious because i'm also trying to animate. I find it really interesting
OpenToonz was used by Studio Ghibli (animators of Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke) and also used to animate the Anastasia Film.

Starting with pencil 2D to opentoonz, these look sick apps. Easy to use and getting all the basic work done. Thanks for introducing and explaining
You have changed my life! I was looking for another animation app that could do tweening unlike flipaclip pro (my current animation software) and opentoonz is just what I’m looking for!
@1:10 Just in case anyone is interested in a 6th choice, Blender 2.8 now has fully rigged 2d animation, plus comp, plus a (simple) video editor. PS: Mr. Anderson (think it drawled like Agent Smith says it...) already mentioned part of this, below - I just wanted to point out 2d + bones is now in Blender 2.8 :D

Just a thing, I wanted you to know that you can also make 2D animation in blender, you have to click file➡️new➡️2d animation. But I don't know if it's good because I have not explored it fully yet

As someone who can draw & wants to use their own drawings & imagination, but gets overwhelmed with many editing GUIs because of ADHD, and as a poor student who only wants an app for sporadic use, I found this video very helpful. @ThatOneSunsetWolf you can use it as an animation app. Just make sure to use a different layer each time, you can also change the layers transparency, there's also ways to tween frame by frame or just on a simple editing app like cutecut or kinemaster. ☺

To get FlipaClip on the oc or laptop you need an android emulator

The only issue with free animation tools is that they normally lack a lot of features of the paid's ones. Which is fine and all but if you really want to get deep into animating then you are going to want to learn a proper suite eventually, which means you might be doubling the learning time. But yeah, for determining if you really want to get into animating then free apps are great!

When i was in my early 20s (i am in my mid 40s now)i took a course in traditional animation (we are talking pen and paper a video camera), just because i love animation and want to know how it was done. I was looking up something for my friend and your vid came up. Made me think maybe i should try animating again. Just to do something to kill time. So thank you for the idea and list of sodtware.

My journey towards digital art has been so daunting (along side so much life stuff) it hasn't really even started, sadly. I've recently acquired the tools I wanted to start with (laptop, drawing tablet), now I wud just like to find some like minded ppl to learn with/from so this transition from traditional art isn't so much like 'jumping into a blackhole'. Brad, Ur presentation (regardless of what the video pertaining) always has an uplifting feel to it, so I guess what my rant boils down to is: "THANX!"
Also, I have gone with OpenToonz for my transition into digital art, since I plan on moving to animation and figured to learn it all in the same program. I've recently acquired Ur "Intro to digital art' program to help as well and was wondering if U have since use OT for any of Ur projects since the making of this video?

yeah i used Krita for the first fiew animations, then started using Opentoonz afterwards.
Do Blender, Do it, just do eet! I want to see you do 2D in 3D with your nifty digital pen and draw board. It still 2D even it is made in a app that is known for making 3D, it is also a animation tool, video editor and a porthole into the future.
Hi, I've been using Flipaclip at present & am excited about using their ability to animate over video clips and add sound. I love how their pencil tool actually can work like an airbrush if you adjust it, anyways, I'm wonderin if you can use these awesome apps you are showing us to animate over videos frame by frame or whatever? @@tab2022 I have downloaded it on a few old lap tops but it definitely worked better on my phone. But who knows it might be better now, look into it, it's a fun way to animate and you can draw over video frames!

I heard of Krita before but my favorite program at the moment is Flip a Clip it’s user friendly, has onion skin and can import sound
It's helpful to know that Blender is also capable of 2D animation as of version 2.80! :)

Hi, I’m a complete animation newbie here but I was surprised by how much is possible in procreate! But so far I’ve online animated seperat little objects and now I’m supposed to animate a whole video and need something, that can make the workflow quicker. Is Krita better than procreate or basically the same?

Mischief MakerStudios Blender is a 3D software, so an IPad wouldn’t be able to handle it. Anyway, you can use Flipaclip or pay for Windows’ simulator in order to use Krita

Hey, have you heard of Maya, 3DX max and 1CLORE? Does blender allow you to do voice overs, make videos and lip sync in the program as well? I want it to be user friendly. I use adobe character animator.

for many of these frame by frame apps where you draw each frame, is there some option to duplicate the previous frame, and simply add a little to that...rather than drawing the whole object again? Just curious

First off, I enjoyed this video, as I usually enjoy your videos. It was informed, clear, and entertaining - as I often find your videos.
I do think you should have included Blender Grease Pencil. As someone who has worked with a few of these programs, especially OpenToonz, I believe Grease Pencil currently matches (and in some ways) surpasses what OpenToonz offers. It ticks off every requirement you cited. I know Blender can be a deep dive to learn, but if you're only tackling Grease Pencil, I genuinely feel it is easier to pick up than OpenToonz. Anyway, keep up the good work, and thank you!
