- Bongiwe Nakani from South Africa (mezzo-soprano) sings "Cruda sorte!" from L'italiana in Algeri by Rossini in the final concert of NEUE STIMMEN 2015.
The final was accompanied by the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra, led by the English conductor Graeme Jenkins.
Recorded on October 24, 2015 in Gütersloh, Germany.

Such a good artist. When one takes under consideration that she sang Satuzza, Ulrica, and Cruda Sorte in the same competition, it's more than impressive.

I think she is very good....from the other room when the sound first came on in this video, I thought it was a "familiar" voice. I can't place whose, but certainly it is a comparison that puts this singer in some quality company....and she is yet "young". Lots of positives to come methinks.

Anyone know much about the state of opera in South Africa? Seems like it wouldn't be that big there, but of course, it's a large, complex country and she would indicate there's an operatic presence there.

With all due respect..she's a talented young mezzo, but she's no Ms. Horne. Listen to what Ms. Horne does with this aria in comparison....its a different voice all together.
agreed, we can't compare a stage legend with such a range as Horne with an emerging singer, but Nakani has a wonderful tone and already shows good chest potential, no mean feat for one still very young. We shall see her in a few years, after she gets some experience under her belt.
Ms. Horne IS still very much a great artist. Although retired from opera since 1996 and from classical recitals since 2000, she gives master classes and is a phenomenal teacher.
I entirely agree, comparisons with Horne or anyone in that calibre is unfair. Let us enjoy this young singer for her fine voice and great potential, and let us hope she will stop rolling single r-s, like in "tirrranno".

Such a dark timbre! Such an expansive range! The voice has such a “solid” sound to it while still exhibiting remarkable agility! Miss Nakani even has a recording of Una Voce Poco fa somewhere...

She isn’t at all a dramatic or mezzo soprano. This voice has that weird quality in the middle that contraltos have.

Haven’t heard this quality of singing since Marilyn Horne’s recording from the 1960’s. Ok Horne is still supreme in the florid passages but Nakani is wonderful and a true operatic mezzo voice.

Mah. Ha una bella voce ed e' anche gradevole nell' interpretazione pero secondo me nell' agilita e' scarsa. Non ho sentito molta tecnica in tal senso ed anche sul fiato manca ancora parecchio studio.per questo repertorio secondo me

I agree, I think this repertoire will eventually work very nicely for her. We should always remember that young singers still have much to learn about the subtleties of the craft.

Great voice. Well worked the serious chest registry, she needs to improve lung capacity.
Very undeveloped, with intonation issues throughout. She also almost cracks on the opening phrases.

I have actually listened to it lol. While it is better than her Rossini, to me there is a noticeable lack of support between her middle and lower register, and thus there is a whopping big gap in colour and projection. Ulrica needs complete strength and clarity between registers or else it loses all it's power.
She needs a ton of work, but there is potential there. Hopefully she won't become another wasted voice.
@Jay Langston Cutting young singers slack just allows bad habits to creep in. But I'm glad she is having success and hopefully her voice has developed nicely.

If you trust the comments, each performance is absolutely outstanding and the best of all times... Come on, people, be a little bit more exigent. This performance is not even really good.
La voz es prometedora y tiene un timbre bonito en los graves, pero las coloraturas y agilidades de la partitura de Rossini se las pasa un poco por el arco del triunfo, además de las variaciones finales que debe estar el pobre autor revolviéndose en su tumba pensando qué mal hizo para que le hagan variaciones desafortunadas a una partitura ya rica y versátil de por sí.
Pero bueno, así es Rossini, complicado y desafiante vocalmente. Si tiene buenos maestros, ya irá acotando su repertorio la Sra Nakani para sacarle el máximo partido a la voz y lucirla con los autores que más se acomoden.

I agree and I think that "crap" passagio happens because she's taking her heavy mechanism (chest voice) to a very high pitch (up to A4! she's changing to head voice until Bflat!). She has a nice voice and sounds a lot better and healthier with Cavalleria Rusticana... I wonder who the hell is letting her to sing contralto repertoire when she's only a 27 mezzo...
to be fair, she is heading the contralto way. These days agents want results fast.
