  • We rented an apartment in the heart of Hugh Town on St. Marys island for the duration of our Isles of Scilly holiday and really enjoyed being in the hustle and bustle of the Islands. Today we spend the morning exploring the area, taking in the Garrison Walls, Isles of Scilly, St Marys Porthcressa Beach, St Marys Quay, the Scilly Farmers and Growers Market where we were able to pick up some Scillonian Tattie Cake, Veronica Farm Fudge and fresh crab meat. We also skirt around Porthcressa Beach (a firm favourite of mine, especially in the evenings when it comes alive), wander along Hugh Street and get some time to try the food bought at the market.

    Anyone want to hazard a guess as to where we're headed in the afternoon for next week's video based on the sneak peek at the end?

      Well, this is a difficult one; um...........but seeing you love super gooey brownies @ 10:38, could it be Gugh?

    • @WhenAdventureKnox
      @WhenAdventureKnox  ปีที่แล้ว

      Gooey brownies are just the best aren't they? I see what you did with the play on words there, but it's not Gugh that we're headed to, even though it does have that white sand beach connecting it to St. Agnes. It's another beach with a white sand beach and turquoise waters (which I guess doesn't really narrow it down!)

      @@WhenAdventureKnox OK. I'm going for the 1Million Pounds. It's Parr beach on St Martins.
      My Pa liked this beach when we holidayed there in the 60s, & my Ma did too!
      So where's Marr beach? Yes, I love sticky gooey brownies as well. That cake you were eating looked scrumptious, but I WISH bakers wouldn't scatter icing sugar over everything! It's sweet enough as it is, & is a cake going to sell better if it's covered in white dust? I don't think so. Neither do my beta cells in my islets of Langerhans. (But now I'm showing off again aren't I?) Talkin' 'bout...........dia-dia-diabetes!

    Hi Caroline, another lovely video, I'm very fond of Hugh Town. Yes, Porthcressa is a lovely beach. I love the fish & chip van! The Thai van is good too. I'm very fond of the Garrison, I usually stay at the campsite when I stay on Scilly these days.
    I've also spent a couple of months volunteering for the Scilly Wildlife Trust many years ago. Their volunteer accommodation was the Woolpack battery, next door to the Garrison campsite. It was a bit weird sleeping in rooms underground in an old fort, but it had great facilities: kitchen, living room, ping pong room, toilets, shower etc. The first time I volunteered there was just after it had been officially opened by Prince Charles, must be about 20 years ago at least. Some of the volunteers I was working with had been there when he and his contingent visited, and told me it was a big rush to clean up the place for his visit - the kitchen was a mess, so they quickly shoved everything in the fridge, which was also a mess, in the hope he didn't look inside. Of course he did look inside! One of the volunteers managed to take a photo of him just as he opened the fridge door and peered inside. When I next went to volunteer, a few years later, the fridge had a fridge magnet attached to it, with the photo of Charles opening the fridge and a caption which read "Please keep this fridge tidy, you never know who might look inside!" or words to that effect.

    • @WhenAdventureKnox
      @WhenAdventureKnox  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would loved to see that photograph of him looking in the fridge. I had no idea there was accommodation underground at the Garrison for wildlife volunteers. I can imagine after a while, the lack of light may have been a bit of an issue, but reading about it rather than having to live in it, it sounds exciting! Pleased to hear you too like Porthcressa. I know it's not what the Isles of Scilly are typically known for, rather it's beaches you almost have to yourselves, but I loved the vibe on an evening with everyone gathering there. I'm so pleased you're continuing to enjoy these videos 🙏 thank you.

      Oh, the crab meat with the cheese and jalapeno bread was infinitely better than the ham and egg that we went a bit crazy for in the lakes. We did have a few ham and egg bagel days in the Isles of Scilly though, but the 2 days that the crab lasted us for were by far the best packed lunches. Thank you mrs Carolina for sharing your trips with us explore places unknown to us beside have ideas about culture and traditions of country there are British traditional food such as stafford shire oat cake , Jersey black butter Sussex pond pudding but the recipe you have is called scilly tatti cake prince Charles when he visited Isles of Scilly in 2012 bought piece of Scillonian to eat on helicopter wrapped tattie cake recipe guarded secret potatoe based with flour sugar dried fruits eggs . Fudge in uk is sweet and toffee made in plain added flavoring with fruits chocolate nuts addition but in fudge is called that name because of America n bakers fudged batch of caramel highly graved caramel actually fudge is creation from America it’s type of chocolate I watched in American channels have flea markets for second hand items and dollar tree stores it’s cheap goods but useful did you have as them you have in Arabic countries flea market group of sellers buy different goods any way bon voyage good luck to you your family friends

    • @WhenAdventureKnox
      @WhenAdventureKnox  ปีที่แล้ว

      I LOVE your comments as I always learn so much. Had no idea 'fudge' comes from the US where some American's 'fudged' a batch of caramel! I'm afraid you were pipped to the post with the knowledge that Scilly Tattie cake is made from potatoes. A nick-name for potatoes is 'tatties'. Most commonly used in Scotland when talking about the dish known as 'haggis, neaps and tatties' as the neaps are turnips and tatties are potatoes. So I really should have put 2 and 2 together, but when I released this video, someone else pointed this out for me. Good luck to you and your family and friends too

    I loved the quick tour of the town and how you appeared in all the places you wanted to talk about! The papers thing reminds me of going abroad with my family when I was young, back in those days it would take 2-3 days for the English newspapers to arrive. As it was the only way of finding out the football results back home those papers would be really popular and every morning and evening scores of Brits would pop in to see if they had arrived yet! I didn't know that canons ceased to become canons when on land - cool bit of info right there! The Tatty Cake certainly did look moist, it's always good to try new things. I like the look of the boat and am looking forward to seeing where it takes you. Ahoy matey!!

    • @WhenAdventureKnox
      @WhenAdventureKnox  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahoy matey indeed 🚢⚓ The getting around on boats (albeit, not in this video) was something that made these islands so much fun. I was raised in a household that didn't have any interest in the footie so I'm afraid I don't remember any scramble for the papers when we were away, but it's crazy to think back to times before the internet was as ubiquitous as it is now! The Tattie Cake was just amazing and on a Facebook Group I'm part of, I've just learnt that over winter, the lady sells it and pops it in the post - winning!!!

    I appreciated your Scilly history lesson regarding the garrison on St Marys. We never really understood why it was there. (Neither Cromwell's & King Charles' castles on Tresco). I doubt whether 2 small guns (yes! I said guns & not cannons thanks to you), could keep a Spanish Armada at bay. I think it was more to deter those massive cruise ships!
    Much better idea. Besides, Spanish galleons might be laden with gold. Cruise ships only have phones & cameras. Bah!

    • @missasinenomine
      @missasinenomine ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Re. the guns vs cannons debate. (You started it, not me!). I found it interesting, & have googled both terms. Lots of info as usual. I still wonder why we still persist with the ridiculous (to me) term, "firearm". Presumably in the old days, a man was armed, with a stick or an axe, when one day some nasty cheat used a gun, & shot his adversary dead! What a scoundrel! He was armed with an arm that fired a shot. A firearm. OK, logical, but why persist with this old fashioned terminology in our modern times? It's a gun.

    • @WhenAdventureKnox
      @WhenAdventureKnox  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahahaha, 'to deter those massive cruise ships' 🤣🤣 I didn't mention it in the video, but I remember whilst I was there reading about how Old Town wasn't well situated for a garrison and that's why Hugh Town came along - a settlement next to the garrison that could be protected.

    • @WhenAdventureKnox
      @WhenAdventureKnox  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never thought about the term firearm in that way, but you're right, I'm almost certain it would have gone down in some way like how you described to end up with that name! I find the English language to be really interesting, especially when old things 'hangover'. Like, plural used to be adding an 'n' rather than an 's', for example 'housen' instead of 'houses', which at first sounds crazy, until you point out the plural of 'child' is 'children'. I can't help but wonder why it never changed?! I teach Computing in a secondary school and it's crazy how many icons or names are still used, but the meaning is completely lost on teens today. Like the concept of the save button being the floppy disc!

    • @missasinenomine
      @missasinenomine ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WhenAdventureKnox Oh, now you're diversifying into linguistics! This gets complicated.
      I think the plural "n" as you say, for children, is the German influence, where plurals invariably end with "en".
      Eg, to use a purely hypothetical example, "touristen". But this is using English words of course.
      I'm not sure if "children" originally came from "kinder" or not.
      We say "seed", & "seeds". Seed can either mean a (single) seed, or many seeds, of the same kind,
      eg. grass seed. Of differing kinds, we say "seeds". (I think).
      I told you this would get complicated! And we haven't even touched on computer science of which I'm illiterate. (but don't tell anyone).

      Hi Amber. The Isles of Scilly was a destination we needed to be a little bit patient for but it paid off. I understand you can visit much more cheaply if you travel there on the ferry and stay at one of the campsites. All of the inhabited islands have a campsite except Tresco. As for affording these trips... I guess it's that I prioritise spending my 'fun' money on travelling. I'll happily give up other things if it means the money I save can go on travel. Not drinking and smoking also helps to keep the travel fund pot a little afloat! I also try to keep costs down by organising things myself rather than going through a 3rd party, and if it's an expensive destination, I do lots of research on ways to save money whilst out there. If it's a low cost destination I tend to be more carefree however!

    4:45 A monster! How many tourists do these ships carry? Surely far too many for the Scillies? Where do they all go to?
    I'm surprised that they can actually sail in amongst the islands, esp. at low tide, as the depth of water is very low. Even the
    "Silly Onion" has to take a low tide route. (Oh dear, my puns seem to be getting worse & worse, don't they? Beg pardon).

    • @WhenAdventureKnox

      A local (I wont divulge who they were) summed up those cruise ships perfectly. They said, the boats usually consist of 3 different types of people: The Newly wed's, the over fed's and the nearly dead's. We visited Tresco when a boat was in and the entrance to the gardens was so busy, we went elsewhere and returned in the afternoon, after they'd had to return to their boat. We were tipped off about their return time by the guys in the TiC - so helpful!

    How are you doing mrs Caroline really I want to visit England just reading is stunning how about traveling there any way as always iam gathering main information about places you visited briefly here it’s st Mary Hugh town is village and capital of Isles of Scilly historic county of Cornwall takes 3 hours and 34 minutes to travel there name Hugh is derived from old English means promontory or elevated ground garrison was originally known as Hugh hill same word is used in Plymouth and hoepoint. Hotels are not many to stay in Isles of Scilly but expensive compared to mainland. Hugh town is busy during May Day bank holiday weekend there world pilot gig championship are held garrison in 19th century now tresco , abbey garden medieval times old town was main center in 17 th century sheltered Hugh town began to grow star castle quay in 18 th century use as military defense increased Hugh became known as garrison

      Hi Khatoon, I'm well thank you, I hope you are too. I wish it only took 3 and a half hours to reach Hugh Town from me, but sadly once I've put on driving or getting the train to Cornwall, and the ferry, it's much longer! I had no idea about 'Hugh' standing for elevated ground. It makes a lot of sense as the island has an 'Old Town' which used to be the main hub until it was decided it wasn't well situated to protect the country from invasion and that's when the Garrison was built, up on the 'elevated ground' and Hugh Town developed next to it. 100% agree with your comment about accommodation you there being a lot more expensive than the mainland too. It makes sense since there's such a shortage, but naturally I'd love for it to be a little cheaper!
