Everything Wrong With The Abandoned G Wagon

  • Last year I found this 1994 turbo diesel G350 that had been sitting outside a gas station for 5 years. I asked to buy it however the owner wanted $30,000 which I couldn’t afford. 1 year later he wants $15,000 CAD and I almost can afford it. Let’s see if it’s worth buying…

In my opinion, I would not buy it as G classes from the 90s has really bad rust issues. I would recommend going with one between 2003 and 2008 as they are still pretty cheap and with the 5 L M113 V8, they are not only easy to repair but also relatively reliable. Since it seems like you’re on the West Coast for a little while, it would be a good idea to look in California, Oregon, and Washington because we have no rust issues around here. My 05 G500 has never left the West Coast, hasn’t been undercoated once, and there is no rust that would affect the trucks structural integrity or drivability.

A facelift one from 2002 won't be 15k$ us, but double or triple if you are lucky to find one. I have a G63 and have been in the market for months. Initially I was looking for g500 and g55 so I know the prices and they are VERY expensive if you consider that they are +20 years old cars. Any facelift G Wagon (from 2001 to 2012) in decent condition are over 30k, usually around 45/50k and if you are looking for a G55 AMG, you can find those over 60k easily, for a 20 year old car that was 90k new thats a lot.
G wagons are very special and worth every penny, you just understand and appreciate them when you own one.

@@aventador3539 I agree with your statement and I also own a 2019 G63 because I already had the g500. It is true that they are very special vehicles and expensive, even for one that is as old as my g500. My point is that one like mine in its current condition isn’t worth more than 20k because of A. It’s not in the best of condition, as it has been rear ended pretty heavily and still hasn’t been repaired, the whole rear door and spare tire cover have to be replaced and the bumper is also cracked from the same accident. And b, The thing also has 253k miles on it and has a couple issues mechanically. The rest of the paint may be in good condition but the front end looks like the moon. In order to repair everything and bring the truck up to perfect condition reasonably (with new parts) it will cost around 20k and the car is only really worth 19k.
The reason why I am keeping it is because we all know there are so many g wagons in the UAE, and in turn I have found a junkyard with 6 or 7 gwagons two of which in the same black color mine is. Since they have been sitting stripped apart for something like 7 or 8 years, the guy wants to get some money from them so I have been able to get almost all of the parts the truck needs to be in a restored sort of condition all for less than 2000 dollars. The guy didn’t really care so he accepted the offer so now I can increase the value of my g500 from less than 20k up to around 35k, saving something like 15k in the process, especially since I am going through the process of A. Shipping the parts to the USA myself and B. Doing almost all the work myself which I can mentally and physically do. I also know this truck inside and out as my family has had it for more than 15 years by now, and I have been the one to wrench at it the most, and has also fallen into my hands.
My overall point is that it seems like he was trying to restore one to save on costs. With that mindset, you can find some which need quite some work for under 20k from places like Copart and IaaI. Of course it takes time and money to restore it, but you are in it so much cheaper than if you were to just buy one off a used car lot.

I do understand the fact that pre-facelift g wagons may be better for off roading, but like stated in the video, 90’s gwagons can only tow 5000 pounds and with a less powerful engine. It seems clear to me that he wants to tow with it but clearly it won’t work. The facelift W463 (2002 to 2007) not only have way more power, but can tow more at 7000 pound rating. Plus, although the 90’s g classes may be more raw and pure, the 2000’s g classes have the same technology, and as bad as the electronics may seem to be, these 2000’s gwagons don’t really suffer from electrical failure unless you are very dumb with the truck. You can always seal the electrical components further in parts of the truck you may think get wet. In reality, the real killer of these electronics is moisture and corrosion, which can be avoided with proper care.
Also, the 2000’s g classes are the same amount of g class that a 90’s g class would be. And think about if you were to drive somewhere in it, would you want a stereo with easy auxiliary inputs and good sound system or a grainy sound system with a cd player? What about the major reduction of road noise and wind noise of a newer g class, wouldn’t you want that? It’s these things which make me think why you should make things better for yourself by buying the 2000’s g class and not the 90’s one.
As always, both trucks are awesome and the older they are the more pure they are, but personally it just makes sense to treat yourself better.

Honestly I’ve seen you get some stick for not working on your cars but ignore the haters bro. You’re a content creator not a mechanic - I wouldn’t even be able to think of the ideas you have in your videos. I binge watched your whole 190 build in one day yesterday, and really enjoy the fact that you have specialists working on what they know best - like having special guests on a tv show. The content is really interesting and your 190 feels much more of a realistic project than other TH-camrs because you don’t do it yourself - I think sometimes the TH-camrs who do it all themselves paint an unrealistic picture of what a real build would be like for someone who isn’t a mechanic with a workshop. Honestly just keep at it, and now I’m subbed I can’t wait for your next 190 build video and your road trip. All the best from here in the UK 🇬🇧

A pulsation in the brake pedal is typically a sign that your rear brake rotors are warped. If the brake pulsation is also in the steering wheel then your front brake rotors are warped as well. That’s a typical problem with Mercedes-Benz when they sit for a while. Check the rotor for a lip around the edge, and if it has one, then your rotors are indeed warped, and that would be the cause of your pulsation. There may or may not be additional suspension components that are also worn and contributing to that pulsation but a lot of times it’s a sign of warped brake rotors.

Change your mechanic mate. No turbo pressure is 99% from a leaking vacuum hose, check the hoses to the turbo and egr valve. They're known as rod benders but not on stock power and not 94 models, the rod benders are the very early 603s. Blow by is normal on diesels as they have to run much higher cylinder pressure. Did he run a compression test? No.

As far as what you should do with the car, the big question is how much is it really worth at the end of the day after it’s all mechanically sorted and all the rust is repaired and what not. It definitely needs a lot of mechanical work I mean you’re talking probably a new engine. Plus the bodywork which has yet to be evaluated. I guess it’s a matter of whether or not you personally like the vehicle and if you think it’s worth it to you.

If I could have only one car my whole life, it would be a Gelandewagen (G class) with a diesel engine. Someday when you're older, you'll remember this missed opportunity... You don't even know if you're driving with the reduction gear on, and you're rushing to buy a G class...

Its a G Wagon, they are super expensive. 15k is very cheap. Its 1994 so its the facelift version. This would be a mega project for him AND makes the perfect combo with the 190.
