@@theturkeysopinion these particular cartridges are definitely no joke, as I just tested a couple of boxes at the range earlier today, and my Sig P320 XTEN cycled through all of them with no issues. although it was a bit of a pain-in-the-ass putting the rounds in the magazine, as you have to press down a little harder than usual to make the 15th round fit in there. so there's a reason why some people (myself included) will often compare the 10mm's recoil to that of a hotly loaded .357 Magnum
@theturkeysopinion Okidoki...if you get a chance to, try some Atomic 180grain. It's rated at 1250fps and I would love to see if it does that and how it does in your gel. Thanks a bunch for your excellent videos 👍
Seriously. Got me thinking about making my own videos on direct performance comparisons between a number of different brands. I own a Glock 20 gen 5 not much out there for data. Might just start making some myself
This is exactly why I carry a 10mm. The 125 grain .357 magnum load moving at approximately 1450 fps has long been considered the gold standard in man-stopping loads. 155 grain 10mm bullets have almost identical sectional density and ballistic coefficient to 125 grain .357 and this Hornady load approximates the performance of that fabled .357 load. This for me is where the 10mm shines for personal defense. You get that .357 performance, but in an auto loader. I like my wheel guns just fine, but prefer my autos for carry. 10mm. Not just for bears.
Another great informative 10mm Auto ammo review. Thank you. This 10mm 155 Gr Hornady XTP JHP bullet is what I use in my Underwood Ammo load for warm weather self-defense carry. The UA load runs a bit hotter / faster (1500 FPS ME advertised) with more energy (774 FtLbs ME advertised), and penetrates a little bit less (about 12" ~ 13" in ballistic gel). Good things! 👍
Like those slomos, can get a good idea of disruption that's not permanant, but I think, matters. The series is a showcase for the 3.8 inch barrel, generally not giving up much for quite a bit of practical convenience. Thumb's up.
Good test. In my 5" Kimber, Ruger, and Dan Wesson 10mm pistols , I get the same velocity as you got with this ammo out of your 1911. One reload I use that duplicates the factory ammo is Starline brass, WLP's, and 11.1 gr of Blue Dot. Personally, I think the Hornady Custom 180gr XTP ammo is a little better mainly because it seems to do the same damage, yet penetrates deeper. But I don't think any bad guy hit with either round is gonna know the difference between the two. Again, good test, thank you, enjoyed it, keep up the good work !!
I am normally disappointed in 10mm performance, but being a 155 gn, I don't have a preconceived ideal performance. I would confidently carry that ammo in my carry guns.
Hi, thanks for all this info on 10 mm bullets. I see you've tested several Underwood bullets (xtreme penetrator, xtp, hardcast). A lot of people use the xtreme defender ammo. It has the fluted bullet design and comes in 115 gr/1700 fps and 100 gr/1825 fps varieties. Any plans to test those? Thanks!
Yep. Me too. I was at the indoor range last week sending some it and the guy next to me commented with a big smile“Man that thing is a cannon” I said “Yes it is”.
Took 2 whitetail with this round from a 6” longslide trp….have extreme defenders same weight now and the 135gr nosler loaded to full send….devastating on targets
I watch your videos and they inspired me to get the Springfield Armory XD-M 3.8 10mm Compact. What is the Holusun Optic you shoot the pistol with? You shoot that pistol superbly well.
recheck your 5 shot fps avg on the Colt. you stated 1397 as avg. Your first shot was 1397. I figured 1443 for total 5 shot avg if i heard you right. I heard 1397,1427,1462,1479,1452. Also, Hornady must have kicked the 10 mm up a notch because i watched a vid from Alaskan Ballistics from 6 years ago and the same bullet 155 gr xtp was at 1265 fps where yours are at 1410.
I came across the Hornady American Gunner version of this in 155 grain XTP loaded 10mm round. Do you have any information or opinion on that iteration?
This stuff makes a tremendous flash...didn't catch it in your footage that I noticed. If/when you do the low-light...I am putting my money on this being one, if not THE top explosion. (also experienced a bit of a guilty-pleasure seeing it escape your left hand. Now I don't feel nearly as bad.)
How to make a 6 hour drive through the Midwest interesting, run The Turkey's Opinion 10mm test series.😁👍 I am getting ready to order a CMMG Banshee in 10mm, and if I can order it with a brace, I will. 👍Eventually, I plan to SBR & suppress it. While I don't have access to a range where I can do much more than chronograph testing, I do think it will be interesting to see the speeds out of the longer barrels.🤔 I also plan on testing the speeds out of the Ruger PC Charger & PC Carbine in 9mm as well, should be fun if nothing else.😁
actually they're around the same price, depending on which online retailer you purchase your ammo from. but when I fire 10mm rounds, my Sig P320-XTEN is great for this!!!!
Good test, Mr. T! Question, does the jacket & core stay together once removed from the gel? I use water as a test medium (I'm usually broke & can't afford gel) and I always have trouble with the XTP bullets seperating jacket & core, not to mention poor penetration. The mushroom is perfect but penetration is usually around 10" with the 155 gr, which I don't feel is enough. Damage to the water filled ziplock bags is outstanding, however. Admittedly, the 10mm did not seperate until picked up but I've had serious problems with 9mm and 200 gr .45 ACP's not holding together, which I feel disqualifies the bullet. Not that it doesn't work ok, but I demand deeper penetration from my carry ammo. I will assume that the more homogeneous gel (clear and 10% ordance) tend to hold the bullet together better? Still, not my first or second choice in carry ammo. Cheers, jc
Can't get your Double Tap 450SMC 230gr. Controlled Expansion JHP test result out of my head. Nothing has beat it. 1130 fps with 5" barrel. 15.5" penetration .80" expansion
This is my carry ammo. I'm rocking it out of a Glock 29 with a kkm 4-in Barrel. I would really like to have a 1911 in 10 mm but I have had such crappy luck with them had a nice Rock Island tried all the bells and whistles to try to get it to shoot also a $😢1500 Kimber couldn't even get it to chamber the first round. Try different rounds including FMJ with Wilson mags😢
Trying to decide between this, V Crown, and Underwood 155 for carry. The V Crown has extreme flash at night The Underwood is so powerful I'd be concerned with not getting good follow up shots This stuff isn't nickel plated and has the word "Deadly" on the box which is a prosecutor's wet dream
135g projectiles inna 45ACP case Necked dow to the 400 Corbon might do 1400fps in Midrange specs. per loading books Do lower or Even higher FPS DO-NOT-use Overcut Ranps on Barrel. Weakness wid the undercut INVITES case to blow Out And usually the Magazine gets shot Outa dá Frame
I've seen it commented on, and fully understand why you are standing and shooting off-hand. It's perfectly reasonable and you really don't even need to justify doing it that way. While it's more real world than a bench, yes...and maybe pretty typical for a hunting type of shot (being able to hold aim & slowly creep trigger back to break)...isn't the type of shot many people think of for 'defensive' shooting. That would probably involve more things like a shot-timer, maybe holster + draw, and rapid trigger squeezes. But I am not suggesting that you change it to call it 'offensive shooting' (deer, of course). hah! It could make, for example, those 2 guns be very different groups & placement if doing them timed. I wonder which of those two you'd shoot better with if some pressure added and not able to take so long to acquire. Have you done that? And if so, which is better for defensive carry?
Correction: 672ft lbs was the group with the Delta Elite 5"
Must have figured it wrong somehow.
a turkey holding an assault rifle? sounds like the title of a new children's television show called "Tactical Turkey"!!! i'd watch it
How can I ship you some 10mm ammo to test?
@@Mac11700 I appreciate the offer but I generally don't do that. It gets complicated and I almost can never keep a proper schedule. But thank you👊👍🦃

for me, both this and "Tools & Targets" are good at testing various 10mm rounds

Nice seeing decent 10mm from a major manufacturer.
Thank you! Just ordered a 10mm slide and barrel for my Glock 21. I have been using 45 supers, looking forward to the 10s.
Great performance. My go to carry round validated. In the woods it’s buffalo bore but otherwise it is this.
This was one of the most informative and entertaining videos on 10mm ammunition I have ever watched! Thank you!

The 155 grain XTP is the perfect urban defense load for 10mm.
Agree

That nice Hornady is loading 10mm to 600ft-lbs territory.
I shoot the hornady American gunner 155 gunner out of my smith and Wesson m&p 10mm performance center 5.6 inch barrel it’s pretty accurate

These 155 XTPs from hornady and underwood are also my preferred carry loads in 10mm.
not gonna lie man, Hornady and Underwood really knows how to make super-spicy cartridges for the 10mm, let alone ammo in general
Another good testing video. I am enjoying carrying my 10mm more and more. I may not make it elk hunting, but at least I am getting some use from it.👍
I load xtp's in 9mm, 10mm, 450bm, 45acp, 38/357, 44mag
I am normally disappointed in 10mm performance, but being a 155 gn, I don't have a preconceived ideal performance. I would confidently carry that ammo in my carry guns.

Another great video from my favorite 10mm reviewer!
You said it.XTP is my number one reloading projectile. from the 155 to 180 and the 200 grain excellent round.
As I've mentioned before I love these tests because I own both of these handguns and the SA is my EDC.

I carry the Underwood, but would carry this any time
Love Hornady loads 💯. Definitely, would carry this ammo for defense 🤝
Saw that in my gun store when I picked up my XDM and shotgun, but ended up buying Sig V-crowns and FMJs online. 😅
Another great video. Love the 10mm and 357 sig content
I was only getting 1278 fps out of my g29 with those factory hornady rounds. Chronoed with Garmin cx1
i use buffalo bore 180gr at 1350fps
Great test TTO! XTP is legit!
Took 2 whitetail with this round from a 6” longslide trp….have extreme defenders same weight now and the 135gr nosler loaded to full send….devastating on targets

Hornady seemed to up their velocity! The old boxes said 1200 something feet per second these say 1410. Not bad 10mm but usually underwood is cheaper
actually they're around the same price, depending on which online retailer you purchase your ammo from.
but when I fire 10mm rounds, my Sig P320-XTEN is great for this!!!!

I may have missed it and I’m too lazy to check. Have you done the Underwood 155gr XTP yet. If not I have spare box if you want it. It’s a beast.
Since I have the 3.8 XDM, I would be very interested in the test. Keep up the good work

@@theturkeysopinion have you verified your results with more shots into the ballistics gell?
damn good test

Very nice !
Do you know if this ammo is loaded the same as their American gunner 155 grain? It is cheaper to buy

The "Ten" was design to be a full power load, and you can download it. But why, then you have a 40SW. So don't.
