    When the clueless boss told OP they were fired for not showing up, OP should’ve called and said “Okay, well, if I’m fired for not showing up even though I literally quit, I’ll be expecting a severance bonus on my final paycheck.”

    • @VikTimmy
      @VikTimmy ปีที่แล้ว +4

      100% no getting severance, that’s not a fight they could win unless there was mention of it in an employment contract. What they could do is file a wrongful termination lawsuit, citing retaliation as the reason. They’d be able to get paid for the entire 2 weeks notice they gave and then get more on account of their former employer breaking the law

      I used to work for a large engineering company. They had a policy of preventing any employee from becoming indispensable. I came close to indispensability, being one of two named software safety specialists. During downsizing I volunteered, and was accepted, for redundancy. The other software safety specialist was also close to retirement age. However, the business was already in the process of reorganising the safety function to provide cover going forward. Good management does exist in places.

    Medical worker here, most if not all hospitals are non-profit hospitals, so they have a charity pool that has to be empty by the end of the yr, like in story #2 if you make +/- x amount a yr you can apply to get any medical debt forgiven by that hospital. Honestly, the rest of the company leadership in that first story doesn't seem much smarter than dresscode guy is. After all their reaction to the problem was: oh, let's just fire and belittle the person that can fix our problems without even listening to his side first.
    What exactly was their plan in case he just went 'ok, bye!' instead of defending himself?

    • @olstar18
      @olstar18 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Don't be so sure. They likely didn't even know about the dress code change. From the sound everything started shutting down immediately so they didn't have more than maybe a couple of days to find out that there was an issue. I'm better it went critical the same day as well. Not much time for someone to get word up that machines weren't being worked on by the it guy.

    • @lenascholz
      @lenascholz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      @@olstar18 oh, I am not criticizing them for taking swift action, that is definitely a good idea. But especially if you don't have all the info, maybe the conversation with your *only* IT guy should start with something more along the lines of 'do you have an idea what went wrong and do you know how to fix it' rather than threatening termination and a lawsuit. If it turns out that the IT guy was at fault or negligent those things are still options obviously, but if he wasn't, you're risking getting rid of a key employee in a moment when you most desperately need him.
      If the protagonist of the first story had gone 'you know what, you just fired me, it's your problem now' rather than properly explain the situation and go back to work afterwards there is a chance they might not have been able to fix the issues in a timely manner, lost that contract and gone bancrupt...

I have 0 reportable income, I’m on Medicaid, and limited to 12 medical services per year - let’s see, 2 hospital stays fo anemia, gastroenterologist referral, endoscopy procedure, Er visit for hand injury, plus routine visit and labs - I’m out of covered visits in 5 months and I haven’t seen my cardiologist yet. • @PhycoKrusk
      @PhycoKrusk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No such thing as, "No medical debt"; every medical system forces debt somewhere.
      In the United States, it happens to be financial debt. In Canada, it's temporal debt; routine procedures may be no problem, but less common procedures can have a wait-list that is two or three or four times longer than for the same procedure in the United States. Still elsewhere, it's quality debt; you don't spend a lot of money and can get into the procedure quickly, but the quality is substantially lower.
      Every healthcare model is a series of compromises. A combination of public coverage for routine procedures and private coverage for those that are uncommon or require exotic medicines or equipment seems to me to be the best compromise.

They'll try to bully you in every way, but stand your ground and get an attorney if you have to...some attorneys will do the work free of charge just on principle.

    That medical one hit me so hard. Back in October 2019, I had a fainting spell in my bathroom, and spent the next four hours in the emergency room. Tests, such as a CT scan, came back with the diagnosis of vasovagal syncope (as in, I put pressure on my vagus nerve, causing my blood pressure to drop, which made me faint; I was going to the bathroom and had a coughing fit at the same time, both of which put pressure on your vagus nerve, meaning I was assured to pass out).
    I spent those four hours in the hospital bed not so much freaking out about what was wrong with me, but how much this was going to cost me, and how I was going to pay for it. Because, I didn't only have the medical bills to pay: I also had a $30,000+ student debt, a credit card bill that was almost $1000, AND I had to pay back my father several hundred dollars for the phone bill. The medical bills (for the hospital, the doctor, the ambulance, and the testing) all came out to around $2000, but that was only because I had insurance at the time. Without that insurance, the bill would have easily been over $10,000. I told my parents that they should have left me to rot on that bathroom floor.
    While I had over $4000 in my bank account at the time, and could have paid off everything except the student debt, it would have really put a dent in my wallet if I paid it all off immediately. So I had to set up a payment plan to pay off the hospital what I owed them; pay my usual amount to my student debt servicer; pay the minimum amount I could on my credit card come it's due date, take a look at my finances at the end of the month and pay more if I could; and put off paying my father back for the phone bill.
    And while I feel bad about saying what I'm going to say next, the only thing that financially saved me was the COVID-19 pandemic. Because I worked in an essential business at the time, I still had a job when everyone else was furloughed; it was meager pay (no more than $200 a week), but it was something. Furthermore, my student debt payments were suspended, easing one burden for me. That, coupled with the stimulus check I got and my tax refund, I was able to pay off the rest of my medical bill, my credit card bill, and my father for the phone bill, leaving only the student debt left. And now, I am in a better job than I was in a year ago, and I'll have enough money to pay that off completely by the end of this summer.

    In US states that have "at will" employment, unless you signed a contract that states otherwise, you can quit your job (or your employer can fire you) any time, for any reason or for no reason. Giving notice is a courtesy, not something an employee is required to do. It also boggles the mind that an employer will think that they have any control over an employee who has resigned. It seems that they are so locked into the mindset of bullying their employees into doing whatever they want them to do that they can't quite wrap their heads around the notion that it's no longer an option.

    The 4th story sounds similar to what's happening with my mom right now. She's hugely vital to the company (wears many hats, etc) but they treat her like trash and her health has suffered for it. Thankfully with mine and others' insistence, she decided to quit. Out of courtesy, she notified the company a month before that she would leave. They didn't seem to accept it. She even offered to train a new hire to replace her but they didn't bring anyone in. She gave in her two week's notice, and now the owner just flat out refuses to believe that she's quitting. He calls her talking about work things as if she'll still be there, and she's had to repeat that she's leaving multiple times. When she does, he conveniently "forgets" or doesn't even acknowledge what she said and changes the subject. He even tried negotiating a new contract that basically controls everything she does and pays LESS than what she was making and acted like it's a better deal. He knows she's irreplaceable and is clinging to her like glue yet doesn't want to offer a better contract. I'm just glad she's finally getting out of that garbage hole.

      I can state from experience that, even with good insurance, if you go into the hospital on an emergency basis, you will get screwed, as it will turn out that a lot of your treatment was "out of network". For every medical procedure or consultation, there are (at least) two prices. There is the "in network" price, negotiated with insurance (or Medicare) and covered by the insurance (possibly with a nominal copay), and there is the "out of network" price, charged to anybody without insurance or with insurance that the medical provider does not have an agreement with. The "out of network" price is often as much as ten times the "in network" price. A lot of emergency care is "out of network" and you, as a patient, are not really in a position to accept only "in network" care. You will get bills from doctors that you have no idea who they are or what they did.

    What is it with employers not understanding what quitting means. Long ago I was a sales manager at a tire shop. Well I had decided to join the military. And for some reason my boss thought I was joking or something. Six months before I was scheduled to ship out is when I told him and he kinda just looked at me weird and walked away. Fast forward and I put in my two week notice. He was surprised and asked what my next job was. I said the Marine Corps. I mean I talked about it a lot. He still didn't believe me for some damn reason. So two weeks came and went, I left my keys on his desk and clocked out for the last time. Mondays I would normally be the opening manager and when he got in at noon he was pissed that the doors were still locked and the workers were just waiting in their cars (this was when cell phones weren't common yet.) He called me in a rage telling my he's writing me up far a no call no show. I said "Ummm, I quit remember. I'm shipping out for boot camp." He said "When were you going to tell me about this?" I was speechless.

    About the hospital bill one: hospital bills are largely made up. the most important things I've ever learned about medical bills are:
    1. always ask for an itemized bill. that often cuts the cost on its own because they realize that they can't really get away with straight up telling you they're charging $50 for an advil.
    2. try to negotiate with the billing department if you can. if you're a longtime patient especially--my local hospital is part of a system that includes my primary doctor and all my outpatient referrals, so when I've been straight up and said I can't pay a bill, they're often willing to cut it to what I am able to pay.
    3. if they're assholes like the billing clerk in the story, go full Karen. it sucks to be that person, but literally just asking for a higher up was once the thing that cut my bill nearly in half.
    These things might not always work, and obviously use your best judgment, but they've helped me out in the past, and hopefully they might help you too!

  • @MsBELLE7
    @MsBELLE7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What sucks about the hospital story. There are some hospitals that operate in such a way that, yes if you are below the poverty line then you get your bill taken care of. However the flip side to that is, is everyone else's rates can get raised so the hospital can recoup the money.
    I really think we need to copy the universal health method. I mean 32 other countries are already doing it, why can't we? I might add we are much larger but that would make it that much more of a success.

    If I have a bill I can't pay that was also unavoidable, like lets say I ended up in a car accident tomorrow and with an ambulance to the hospital, and ended up with a bill I can't pay, I've got basically a standard procedure. I'll tell them the truth - No, I can't pay that lump sum right now. No, I can't reasonably pay that lump sum in the next few weeks or even months. If you want me to pay you in a lump sum, for a bill like 2,500 dollars, it would honestly take me about 8 months to put together, and that assumes I have absolutely 0 unexpected expenses, or periodic expenses that happen rarely (like say car registration). I'll offer the following 2 options - #1 - I will pay a monthly payment of the largest amount I know I can sustain until the bill is payed. The first number I suggest will be the most I can do, so don't suggest a higher number. #2 - They can wait until I get the lump sum gathered and have 1 payment. If this is refused, I'll offer them $0.
    I had a student loan that I owed $14,500 roughly on, and paying it back wasn't going to be an issue if I had stayed in my career path out of college, but it turned out I hated working on ocean going cargo ships, so after 4 years I stopped. I was unemployed for a year, then got a job as a truck driver and now I barely get by working for my dad teaching people how to drive trucks at a CDL driving school. This loan had gone into collections, and the collection agency called me every month for like a year asking for payment of the entire loan in one batch and I used to just laugh at them. Finally, I got tired of this, and I said to them, "So, let me get this straight. You idiots think I let this loan go into collections, but that I still somehow have close to 15Gs just laying around? Yeah... sure I'll run right over to the bank and send that your way buddy. Honestly, when you ask such stupid questions, how frequently does it go well for you?" The guy responded by starting to describe to me how to get a payday loan. I literally said, "Whoa whoa whoa... so you want me to go get another, shittier loan, so I can pay this off? HAHAHAHA how about instead you just go fuck yourself and we skip all the bullshit in the middle." They called me back the next day and asked about payment options. I told them I'd pay them $100 a month until it was paid off, but if communication was started between our 2 parties, I would be the one to initiate it except in the case of sending notices that say things like "your auto-debit will be withdrawn on this date for this much" and if they called me a single time to ask for more money faster, I would go back to paying them $0 a month, like I had done for the previous 5 years. In the end, after about 10 months of $100 a month, we called them and arranged so that I now pay them $400 a month and my dad essentially raised my pay by enough so that after tax, I get the extra $300, and basically the business is paying off that loan because me having bad credit is more harmful to my dad's business than it is to me personally.

    My aunt got a $250 medical bill after insurance. She went to set up a payment plan for the balance. She offered them $10 a month. The accounting person told her the minimum they could accept was $25. My aunt was on a fixed income and couldn't pay more than $15. After some back and forth the accountant told her it was $25 month or they would send it to collection. My aunt asked for a supervisor. After hearing my aunt's side the supervisor assured her the $25 was a suggestion and she could pay as low as $1 if that's all she could afford. The first accountant then asked if she was paying by check or if she had the $10. My aunt said after careful consideration and because she was so rude she could now only afford $1 a month. So the hospital billed her $1 a month for the next 250 months. My Tia was gangsta. RIP

    I'm from Spain and the more stories of the USA healthcare system and society in general I hear, the more I believe your country is a fucking dystopia. My country has a lot of flaws we should fix, but I genuinely don't understand how USA gets to be the number one country in the world, the wealthiest and "most free" of them all. Clearly not free from university and medical debt. I didn't even know paying for delivery a baby is a thing, specially in a country that complains about low birth rate.
    As I read once, if in Europe healthcare is a right and guns are a privilege, in USA you make it guns to be the right and healthcare just a privilege, and that's pretty messed up.

      You say "North America", but actually, it's just the US. Canada has a decent single payer healthcare system. The US's private, insurance funded system is the one that is totally insane, and though Obamacare did get more people covered, it did absolutely nothing to fix the underlying insanity of the system. But right wing politicians, aided and abetted by the insurance and healthcare industries, have done such a good job of convincing people that "socialized medicine" is worse that we likely will never fix it.

I will edit it now.
      And I agree.
      Spain's healthcare system is not flawless, the bad thing about public healthcare is that you usually has to face long waiting lists for appointments unless you have something serious, but it's still way better. I have chronic pain, I have taken a lot of medication and had a lot of MRIs and other tests, and right now I was selected in a public program focused on effective ways of treating chronic pain, which costs about 2000€ in private healthcare. I have to pay nothing. My family would be bankrupt if I had to go through all of that in USA, all because of a condition with no cause. Can't imagine how hard it must be for people with similar problems and disabilities there.

    • @vojtechsimsa5129

      actually, US system IS about freedom... you are free to pick your own insurance provider, with costs and benefits that suit you, or not to pay insurance at all and hope nothing goes wrong. I'm from Czech Republic and we do not pay for hospital bills - we have 14% of our pay automatically deducted and sent to "health insurance", pretty much becoming another tax. This has some funny side effects, for example you can pick the insurance provider - but there is no real difference between them, you can't get better treatment than anyone else even if you wanted to pay extra, ... From where I stand, I would much prefer the USA system.

    • @luvamiart8567
      @luvamiart8567 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@vojtechsimsa5129 Well, as I said, with my chronic condition, in USA I would ruin my family. People born with chronic illnesses or disabilities should be in consideration. If you are only free from dying or from a lifetime of misery if you have money to spare, you are not really free. Either that or you are having in mind only negative freedom and not positive freedom, you should check out the difference between those two, and both are important.
      I've heard some pretty messed up stories about USA's system. A father that got testicle cancer (early stage and curable), and decided to not pursue any treatment and die so he didn't leave his daughters with medical debt. A mother crying because she works full time but can't pay the insuline for her diabetic son, a man that had a heart attack and while having it asked his family to be driven to the hospital instead of calling an ambulance because they couldn't pay for the ambulance.
      A system in which you are supossed to be free but every poor/low class person is scared of anything happening because they wouldn't be able to pay for the ambulance/treatment, is not a free society, you are not free of the fear of any emergency. A system in which the simple act of delivering a baby can cost you your savings is not a free system.
      Besides, even if it's free, it's not fair. a healthcare system driven by pure capitalism only guarantees the constant rise of prices so big pharma can make more money because people pay anything to stay alive. Many medications were created through public funding and they were developed to have free patents so they could help more people, yet companies privatized them to make money, the medicine is the same and the price is 10 times higher.
      A company that has to give their workers health insurance will go for the least costly one, no matter if it doesn't cover everything, and health insurances will try to cover as little as possible, many will pay for only part of the treatment, good luck if you cannot afford a 1000$ emergency even after the insurance paying for part of it.
      A system in which you have to pay whatever one person decides you have to pay in order to stay alive is not really free. It's like being mugged with a gun pointed to your head. Yeah, you are free to refuse to give your money, but good luck staying alive. Is that really freedom?
      To me, freedom is adknowledging you are part of a society and societies are built with collaboration and compassion, and I gladly will pay taxes if that means my money will help my own treatments and will help other people. So we are all free to live without being afraid of having an accident not for the accident itself, but for having to pay for it.

      Just as a reminder, US Constitution guarantees life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Doesn't mean you"ll achieve it but you can pursue it. As for gun and our love of them, these rights are guaranteed just like freedom of speech and freedom of religion, and so forth. When Obamacare became the rule of law in the US, our healthcare went downhill fast. For people saying they couldn't afford insurance is bullcrap as most insurance programs were affordable until then. Mine went from 50USD a week to over 100USD, with less coverage and more deductible. On top of this, between medical lawsuits and uninsured, especially from illegal aliens, providers and hospital increased the cost for service to cover them. If an uninsured person visits an ER, they cannot be turned away and must be treated. If your running a business and you must provide a service to someone who can't pay, are you going to just suck up the cost or pass it on to other who can pay.
      And for gun rights, our forefathers insured that "we the people" controlled the government and not the other way around. If you have gun control, just how much freedom do you actually have before your government cracks down on you. Our government is reaching the level where the reset will probably happen, another civil war. Unfortunately that's the by-product of allowing communist, they call themselves liberals, to infect the society.

    That last story is almost too real. People who work nights get sooo much shit. We're expected to be silent during waking hours while others are loud, contribute to loud chores, but not during our normal waking hours, and called lazy for having the same work-life balance as everyone else, but at a different time of day. Malicious compliance feels like the only way to teach these people a lesson on what theyre asking of us.

    Every time I applied to Microsoft they flat out stated that the max term is 18 months. After that they lay you off for 6 months then you have to reapply. Since no one can be unemployed for 6 months people get other jobs and aren't available. So MS burns through a lot of personnel and are constantly training new replacements.

    I agree with Harry Wormwood in the Matilda movie about the delivery bill.. "I'm not paying it, what are they gonna do, repossess the kid???" Although I'll be honest, if 2000 dollars would put you in "major debt", maybe having a kid wasn't the best idea.

    You know I never understood why companies take huge risks that rely on one employee who they know is gonna leave, like come on it's basic science, if you screw up because they left then more people leave which means you screw up more which means even more people leave you put yourself into a cycle because instead of relying on everyone you relied on one dude you knew was leaving

    When I traveled for work, I usually ate the same thing for breakfast (bagel with cream cheese, juice and 2 bacon). I had a $15 breakfast allowance with no receipts required. My breakfast was $5 with tip. When I turned in my expense report my manager refused to sign it because "no one eats the same thing every day". So, I kept the email and changed the expense report to come out to the same total, but changed the day entry by +/- pennies to make them different. After that I just put down $15 a day for breakfast. Yes, I kept eating the same thing when I traveled.

    16:09 just a fun bit of why I hate insurance, all the stupidly high prices you see are set that way because insurance won't pay for low cost thing, so if they charge 50$ for an advil, insurance will 'negotiate' it down to what it actually costs, EVERYTHING you see that is an asinine cost is due 100% to the fact insurance exists.

I’m pretty sure that’s retaliation and harassment the way it was done and I hope she goes after the organization or at least the person did it. Everyone HATES that person and that didn’t help the case.

    Can someone from the U.S please explain to me why you don't have free healthcare? I'm born in Canada and have lived in Sweden since I was 6, and both countries have free health care payed by taxes. The taxes aren't even too high, yet we still have free healthcare. Why doesn't the U.S follow this system?

    • @k3upikachu

      Because our government officials make money from stocks and donations from private industry and thus have a vested interest in for-profit systems that screw people over, like the healthcare industry. Also why we incarcerate so many people and why we spend insane amounts of money on "national defense" aka meddling in other countries.

      Think that is hard to really answer in the comments of a video post, there are several sites out there that explain that. One part is what eevee said, private industry would lose money so nobody wants to go that route. While it is often ignored about 40% of the population do get free healthcare. And people already hate that their taxes pay for those people.

    I was charged $800 literally just to be told to go to another doctor for my anxiety/panic disorder. I had passed out and I was experiencing brain fog and I couldn't answer all their questions but the doctor chalked it up to me drinking an energy drink and being a dumb kid all because I mentioned drinking an energy drink a week before this episode. I was 20f. I begged them to at least check my blood because I wouldn't be able to afford to go to another doctor. I'm now out of debt but I'm raw dogging mental illness and my disorder on my own now with no medication or therapy.
