Titanic propellers, steam engine parts, etc. , 3000 years later, were still made this way. Millions of cast iron parts being done likewise TODAY. Better safety? No doubt. But the process is still basically the same. Again, much respect to these hard working guys who are providing for their families.

To prevent the heavy pattern sinking further down into the sand, a bit like why they drive piles into friable ground to support building construction.
