Strange! American audience complained that this movie dragged out to b too long; however, European audience absolutely celebrated it. In fact, it stayed on screens for 4 years. They called Bronson, il Duro.

The first time I saw this scene, it was 2AM. I woke up and turned on the TV and started watching. I was hooked. I said to myself "I'll watch one more scene and then go back to sleep." I kept saying that for the next 2 hours until the end. This film is an absolute masterpiece. Period.
I was a kid in the 80's, This film turn my brain up and down so much I couldn't sleep. I can't remember any other movies had this effect on me.
I love how Harmonica is always enigmatic throughout the movie, even when dealing with allies. The characters in this film are something else. Every slow move they make and every word they say is poetic and conveys a veiled might, as if they were heroes from the epics of Homer. This film is Leone's epic.
Anyone who hasn’t watched this incredible movie, is missing one the best films ever made. Filming. Editing. Acting. Musical Score. Story. It’s long but worth every moment.
It's long, and that makes it even better IMHO.

No. Sometimes a person only has so much time to devote to a film. And,.. some folks dislike longer films. My intention is to share that this is a very worthy watch. Your opinion of my statement is your own.
This movie is just full of superb scenes. Harmonica at the well saying "When you hear a strange sound, drop to the ground", Cheyenne at the train, The initial scene at the farm, the gun fight at the train station, this scene above and on and on and on. Easily one of the best films ever made.
200€, no 5000 dollars when 2 vulgos are protecting the widow.
The scene is pure perfection! The slow, deliberate movement of the actors is sublime!
Westerns are ok. But this movie is insane. Pure art. Watch it again and again... On each step of your life you will find something in it for you.
Ennio Moriconne was genius; He orchestrated the whole score out of the few rusty notes played in Harmonica: where harmonica ends, the horn section weaves in and finally the electric guitar punch it as a grand finally!!! It puts chills in my spine.
Lionel Stander is in this film for less than 5 minutes, yet that was all he needed to steal the scene and leave a lasting impression.
Great character actor.
Sergio Leone is a maestro. Every one of his movies, genius. We didn't get enough films from him. The dollars trilogy, Duck, you Sucker!, Once upon a Time in America and this particular epic. Bronson, Robards and Fonda are all at their peak in this movie for me. Just Legendary.

This is one of the 2 grandest westerns of all time, Sergio also made the other. A Fistful of Dynamite (UK title for Duck You Sucker!) holds a special place for me because where this movie is about the death of the old west that is about revolution.
@@darthwiizius I saw all the other Sergio Leone westerns a thousand times (including the part-directed, uncredited My Name Is Nobody) and haven't even heard of A Fistful of Dynamite until I happened on its very beginning when channel-surfing one evening several years ago. I think it is a flawed work, but a glorious failure, and with a revolution, Leone looked at a grander theme than in all his other films. What stayed with me the most was the railway station scene, which exceeded even Jill's arrival and the final scene of Once Upon A Time In The West.

Yes it absolutely is flawed, James Coburns Irishman is hopelessly ineptly played and his summer of love theme is out of place, as is his backstory as an "average" Irish fellow forced into rebelling when in fact he is a posh car owning millionaire (normal folks in the British Isles did not have access to such toys). But the film has charm and the way he drags Rod Steiger's gang from bandits to revolutionaries is an interesting ride not too dissimilar to the way "sister" Sarah drags Clint Eastwood into a rebellion. What I love about Sergio films are the sub-plots underlying the main stories.
No doubt! This film is a masterpiece. And "western" has nothing to do with it. It's just quite simply one of the best films ever made. The characters. The scenes. The lines. The music! And all the sounds from the horses to the trains. It's truly a sound-fest! All exquisite!

Once Upon a Time in America is a great Sergio Leone movie too. Not often referenced. Gangster movie starring Robert DeNiro, James Woods, & Jennifer Connelly.
I've seen this film about 50 times. It's definitely the best western I ever saw. Great roles by Fonda, Bronson and Robards. But I must say.....I really liked Clint Eastwood in "Pale Rider" and in some other movies, I loved Tim Blake Nelson in "Old Henry" and I'm still very pissed about the fact that Val Kilmer didn't get an oscar for "Tombstone"......
Neh. It's a great western for sure, but not as good as the dollar trilogy. And Charles Bronson is miscast, he doesn't fit in this film, his acting is as always, not good. All he could do, was being macho.
Charles Bronson was a genuine badass. Did you know he was Lithuanian? And, for my money, Once Upon a Time in the West was the best Western movie ever made.

Never mess with a guy who carries a gun and is playing his own theme music. A masterpiece! The best character introductions in movie history.
Casting Henry Fonda against type is testament to Sergio Leone’s genius. Putting him in a Western with Charles Bronson and Jason Robbards was inspired. This film is God Tier.
True. Fonda was great as the villain. He had a way of saying things & smiling that worked for the role. Leone was a definitely a genius. I can watch his movies over & over again.
Leone first wanted Fonda to wear brown contact lenses. It was Fonda's idea to keep his natural eye colour, since blue eyed guys were almost always casted as the good guys in hollywood at that time, what Leone didn't know since that wasn't the case in italian movies
Fonda was going to wear brown contacts but Leone wanted his real cold steel blue eyes instead!!

It sits comfortably in my personal top ten list.
This scene is superb, you need to watch it several times to catch every nuance, every expression and every word. Pure genius in action and Bronson and Robards carry it excellently. If they could make films half as good as this one today then they would be worth watching.
Jason Robards was a fantastic and prolific actor.

Same as mate, the front 3 in this film are perfectly cast and the story is stunning along with the art style and delivery. You know this film is something different and special right from the moment Frank says "well now you've said my name" and smiles at the boy. I have this as at worst in my top 2 westerns of all time and as good of a movie as I have ever watched.

The entire scene is complete perfection right down to Cheyenne's final, oh so subtle nod of respect to Harmonica.
I watched it on netflix the other day for the first time. This movie was something else. Music, characters, atmosphere, story - just perfect. Wow.

Jason Robards was soooooooo great in this movie, heck, everyone was fantastic. What a magnificent film, maybe the best western ever told.
One of the greatest movies ever made! The fact that it was shot in Techniscope (35mm film, but only half the height), which is grainier and a bit softer than 35mm full frame anamorphic, makes it look gritty. You also get the advantage of deep focus with wide angle lenses, making many of the now iconic shots possible. Perfect! Fun fact: of the three men waiting at the train station, Woody Stroode's character didn't wear a duster. The other two did, fair enough.
Woody Strode did wear a duster in the first few minutes of the opening.
The first shot of Strode is him standing in the door wearing a duster.
He just took it off and put it on his horse before he started walking towards the windmill.
I guess that after Harmonica killed all 3 men, he went to take one of the horses for himself and saw the third duster on one of them.

One of those 3 men waiting at the train was actor Al Mulock, who would tragically kill himself during the shooting of this same movie by jumping out his window in the hotel while dressed in the same outfit he wore during his train station scene. Apparently, Leone was in one of the rooms below and saw Mulock pass by his window on the way down, and when people realized what had happened and were ready to rush Mulock to the hospital, Leone told one of his crew "Make sure you get the costume, we might need it".

You could feel the tension in that first scene. Greatest western ever made. Good Bad Ugly was a close second.

The photography in this particular movie was superb.
Always great to watch a master at work. Sergio Leone made the greatest film of all time as far as I'm concerned and here it is in all it's glory.
Still love the scene at the train station, where Bronson says where's Frank? and Jack Elam says Frank sent us, to which CB says did you bring a horse for me? ( because there are only 3) and JE laughs and says, looks like we shy a horse, and then CB shakes his head and says you brought 2 too many and proceeds to kill all 3 as they try to outgun him, even though he gets wounded, he rides off on the 3rd horse leaving the dead gunmen the remaining 2 horses. Great dialog.
The beginning is legendary. Great dialogue throughout entire movie!
@@robertzastrow4648 The dialog is surprisingly sparse in this film. This story is told with the eyes and you can sense the tension without lots of filler. Sergio Leone was a master storyteller without a doubt.
and he only gets wounded because on of the gunmen had a mare's leg (modified Winchester lever action)
I used to go to the neighborhood theater with a group of 6 friends. We watched films like good/bad/ugly, Ben Hur, etc. The audience would always react whenever show stopper lines were delivered. "You brought two too many caused the entire theater to erupt!" The other two lines were by Henry Fonda: "Now that you mentioned my name....." and "How can you trust a man who wears a belt and suspenders?" one of the guys we were with stopped wearing both, funny he was almost 300 lbs.

I have watched this movie about 5 times through and single scenes from YT 100 times.
I loved the dollar trilogy, I loved the "Once about the in the America".
Sergio Leone, Tonino Delli Colli and Ennio Morricone were a one of hell of a trio to make movies.
They made Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, Gian Maria Volonte, Eli Wallach world famous stars. Bronson, Robard and Fonda already were stars. Of course this is just my opinion.
The common sentiment in Leones movies are sullen and romantic undertone, which was masterfully emphasised by Morricones masterful sense of musical drama. I believe Leones movies would not have gained the status he had without Morricone. Also Collis cinematography was kind of revolutionary with its boot level perspectives and really close shots in the face.
My all time favorite is the lengthy beginning scene at the start of movie "once upon time in the west" in the train station. No words, only squeaky sound from wind mill.
I miss Sergio.

This is a most terrific and mysterious movie ever seen.The every actors are acting as a mysterious guy with unforgettable acting I appreciate all the actors for their talented acting.

The cowboy at the station on far left was Al Mulock. After finishing the opening scene where he was killed, he went to his hotel fully dressed in his cowboy outfit. He went to the top floor and jumped to his death. He was also in The Good, Bad and the Ugly.
He never completed the scene. At the end prior to the gunfight, it's a stand-in filmed from behind.
Sorry to hear that. Yes, I remember him getting disabled in the opening scene of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

And to think that American critics at that time either did not like it or pretended they did not like it. Even Fonda did not realise what a masterpiece it was and that despite the many great films he made this one is of his very best. Probably the best western of all time and one of the best films ever made.

What really makes these older films great is they aren't slaves to method acting and realism.
A lot of the willingness to be theatrical has been lost, yeah.

One of the greatest things about this particular film was taking the time to build tension in so many of the scenes.
Nowadays, that masterful building of tension is completely sacrificed to keep short attention spans, keep the plot moving at all costs and action, action, action.
(IMO, action without any thought or craft cheapens it)
The greatest method actor of all time is Michael Caine, the way he delves into the real character of his roles and lives their lives is astonishing. It's a pure coincidence that every part he was given was to play Michael Caine....
When the scene starts, Woody Strode DOES have his duster on, then takes it off and ties it to his saddle.

L'uomo dell' Armonica is sure talking a lot. Not just a lot for being in a Western, not even for being in an Italian Western, but a lot for being the biggest badass in that whole Italian Western.
But I guess that "He's talking when he shouldn't talk, and when he should talk he's playin' that damn harmonica."
Sergio definitely knew how to let a scene breathe without it feeling drawn out. That was a fast seven minutes.

There is a certain sort of sweat that is unique to westerns.
Just love the use of silence in this. Nowadays filmmakers would feel compelled to fill it with something-- score, background noise, conversation, something, or just try to hurry the movie along. These long.pregnant pauses just dont happen anymore
