  • Once again the CAT D11 Dozer frequents the edge to move some material. Slow and steady is the plan.

That is one brave Cat operator. I leveled a sandy road for the drag line operator along a slough. I got too close to the edge while in reverse and part of the track was over the edge. I panicked and stopped the machine. It was an old D4 with defective blade that needed a constant hand on lift lever. The ole timer drag line operator got it out for me. The edge of the sandy road was starting to crack and I got scared it would fall when I restarted it with the pony motor. That was my last time on a CAT. Old machinery with needed repairs and an inexperienced operator, are a bad mix. It was a reclamation district that did everything as cheap as possible. Some of the pumps were clam shell types and had 100 HP GE motors and fan belts to turn them. The pumps and the motors were built in the 1920s and should have been in a museum.

One of my favorite books is " The Path Between the Seas". An history of the building of the Panama canal. At one spot where there was a great steam shovel digging away, the earth was sliding down a hill at exactly the same pace as what was being dug. Yard for yard for several years! --Another note-One of my Uncles lost his life when alone, working with a large cat. He somehow got wound up on the cable when dragging in a log. These are sketchy jobs and you've got to be be good.
