First Kayak Fishing trip on the Hobie Outback Didn't go as Planned...

  • After months of waiting, I FINALLY got to take the Hobie Outback out for my first Kayak Fishing trip of the year. The "Maiden Voyage" so to speak. I had a vision of catching a limit of giant bass on one of the best bass lakes in the area. Of reaching isolated spots and having sections of the lake to myself I could never reach before. It was going to be epic!
    More like an epic disaster. Nothing went as planned. Well, except the Hobie Outback. It was better than expected. But EVERYTHING else I had planned out in my mind or had wanted to do as a card-holding kayak-fishing TH-camr basically sucked.
    It was so bad it took me 4 tries to edit the video into a story I was happy telling. Into the TRUE story of my first trip out - which is nowhere near the story I had originally laid out for the video in my head.
    Epic days will be ahead, I'm sure, but this was day 1 of learning the skill of kayak fishing and making kayak fishing videos.
    Even with all that, every day I'm looking at ways to get out on the kayak again. After I finish typing this, I'm jumping in the truck for trip number 5.
    If you're considering getting a fishing kayak, I recommend supporting your local kayak outfitter, like River's Edge in Leetsdale.
    But if you don't have a local dealer or simply want the convenience of having your new 'yak shipped directly to your door, check out FishUSA.

    I feel ya, having a kayak is a blast! I've had mine for a little while now and taken it out quite a few times. Definitely learn a lot out there. I was gifted this kayak and it's more of a recreational one, it's a sit in one. Being new at the time, I thought that was better for stability and control but I was only just getting into it. Learned out the hard way that damn near ever fishing kayak are the sit on style. Needless to say I went for a little bit of a swim with my sit in kayak on one busy afternoon at a local lake. Wasn't fun when it was taking on water. It didn't sink but I didn't' give it much time to find out, it floats to a point but I'm sure it'd get so heavy that it probably would sink at some point. I was fishing with my girlfriend that day so everything turned out ok. Fishing some cove and the water was pretty choppy from the boats but we handled it just fine. We were using some anchors to keep us spot locked. Big waves started coming and I didn't think much of it and then I think I adjusted something and was leaning a little to one side. That little motion with the waves coming at us and the anchor in the water caused me to flip in an instant. Was pretty crazy and kind of funny/ stressful. It was in the middle of February but it doesn't get too cold out here but still the water was chilly. Only lost a hat and a bag of M&M's, not too shabby. Come to find out that anchor was way heavier than most recommended sizes. I had a 10lb mushroom style and I believe it didn't fully hit bottom, must've been on a rock and then the waves pushed it off the rock plunging deeper and then I was swimming with the fishes haha. GF tied a rope to my kayak and I grabbed the rope and doggy paddled both to the shore. Was a process but I did it, even with mine fairly underwater. Learned a lot that day lol but I'm not afraid of it at all. Sure some people have had some really unfortunate accidents out here but most people can swim so I'm not too concerned with that. I could understand flipping in rushing water, little bit more of a problem then. Definitely the next Kayak will be a sit on and with a pedal drive system, too broke for the trolling set up haha. I like the Oldtown Sportsman PDL. Most likely going to get that one, for sure want something that is stable to cast from.

    Took the kayak to C.C. today. I launched at the Thompson Hill Park Launch. MISTAKE! I forgot how steep that launch is and had a heck of a time carting my kayak back up to the prep area. I have a Dynamic Dolly that makes transporting the kayak a lot easier, except when the angle of the ramp is equal to most ski slopes in the area. I know the launch where you were chokes up with weeds when the water warms. I would be surprised if you will be able to peddle out of that area once the growth start. My next trip might be Lake Arthur (dedicated kayak launch area). Always enjoy you videos and your dedication to the sport and your art. Perhaps at some point 2 South Hills Guys can join up on a kayak fishing trip. Though I have heard that some Hobie guys are snobby when around other kayakers.

      Hey hey.... not snobbery here. :) happy to meet up sometime. Lake Arthur should be nice. I need to get up there eventually. We're blessed with a lot of good fishing spots around here!

    Really appreciate your thorough documentation of your kayak fishing education. I’ve been paddle kayak fishing here in south Florida for 15 years. I learn something new every time, and keeping it simple is the key. At 65 I am now ready to try a pedal kayak. You are helping me make an educated decision. Much appreciated, stay safe.

      Thanks, nice to hear. I'll be doing a review of my first month / 6 weeks on the water soon - but I'm a couple weeks behind on editing. :P So there are a few more kayak fishing videos coming before that - and I kind of feel like the last one or two I'm much more fishing-focused and less "let me figure out kayak fishing". I'm 100% enjoying it! There is a video coming soon that I think captures the drawbacks of the Hobie pedal drive very well.

    It's best to get through that awkward stage out of the way when it's still early, so you can be rolling when the bite heats up. That stinks your pixel is acting up. My wife just got an older one, and I'm pretty impressed with it so far.

    Your struggles don’t go unappreciated my friend. Like you said it was a learning experience. In my life I have learned that expectations are resentments waiting to happen. Lol. Thank you for sharing your first trip, good or bad. I always learn something and it’s always entertaining.

    A lot of what you talked about hit home for me, I almost felt like you were reading my brain! That is my biggest struggle is trying to PURPOSELY put a video idea together and honestly at this point ive almost given up on trying to have a video idea simply because fishing is so unexpected in so many ways. Anymore I just decide heck with it just go fishin and watever hapens happens lol. I an jealous of any youtube fisherman that can come up with a video idea for a fishing trip and make it happen! Cool video!

    • @AaronHuntFishing
      @AaronHuntFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In some ways that is the hardest part. And I also get tied to wanting to put videos out in a certain order, so ones like this interrupt my frequency of releasing videos too! You do a good job of telling the story on your channel. It's why you have so many raving, loyal fans that recognize you out on the water!

    • @fishinwithish
      @fishinwithish ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AaronHuntFishing It does bother me when I don't upload videos in chronological order, but the only time they get out of order is when something crazy happens and all I can think about is showing the craziness. Thats also how some days on the water get left behind for me because something crazy happens and a normal day gets skipped over and I just never go back to it because I also want vids to stay fairly current. The struggle of being a youtuber is real! It is a very odd feeling going fishing and a complete stranger comes up to me n says something like "I never thought I would see you on the water!!!" and I'm like uhh who are you? lol

    Well firstly let me say I've never been to your channel before but being the owner of a new Outback myself, did some searches and yours came up.
    I've been kayak fishing for several years and understand your pain! "The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry" -- Robert Burns
    You kept a good attitude though and made the best of it, so good on you! You've got a new subscriber and I'll be looking forward to seeing some of your subsequent videos.

      Thanks man! Yeah - definitely having fun - and in general fishing is way too much enjoyment to get overly stressed about a day not going perfectly. but hopefully today's trip will work out better. ;)

    Good to see you out on the Outback! One thing? As someone who has dumped an expensive cell phone over the side, I'd suggest you get a leash for yours if you don't have one. It made me nervous to see it balanced on your thigh as you released that bass :). I have one that attaches to all 4 corners of the phone and clips to my PFD. And I ditched my crate. I found it just encouraged me to bring too much stuff. Cheers!

    Might not have went as planned, but still got to try out the yak and work some of the bugs out. Crazy all the boat traffic. A lot of times they line up along the creek channel in the shallow end this time of year fishing for crappie. At least you managed to hook into a few. I'm sure we'll see you pulling in those lunkers soon.

    • @AaronHuntFishing
      @AaronHuntFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought they were crappie fishing, but in talking to a lot of them it's bass - too early for crappie they say. but probably on this week with the weather.
