    I’m a first responder in the area and we are always getting calls for lost or stranded boaters/ kayakers…more often than you’d think. We get a lot of tourists that don’t know how our water changes.

      Hey Clay, ( @Clay0124 )we are moving down there in a few weeks, I want to get back into boating like I did with my dad as a kid. But that was in Miami and the Keys decades ago. Would you recommend a boating course where I can also learn about the waters and tide changes of Pensacola?

      I hear about them often. It’s sad. Just like tourist coming to our beaches to swim. We lose several tourist every year to rip currents. Ppl have to heed the warnings and be safe before entering the water.

      equipment. I fish the entire gulf coast. I've been fishing this area for 25 years. I live in Texas but got fishing licenses from Texas to Florida. Gotta always have to safety equipement and gather info, tide charts and a game plan.. Have checkpoints to xall someone to let them know you are safe. Know the direction of the current so you don't waste energy getting to your destination and so you don't overshoot your destination.

    Bless you for cleaning up after other careless people, something I used to do when was fishing on the rivers here in the UK. I remember a bailiff complaining to me that people can carry full tins of beer to go fishing but are too lazy to carry the empty ones home. Still happens too. Tight lines Dee. Tony.

    • @Ray56z
      @Ray56z ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I recently had to pull my hatchet out on a guy walking towards me that didn't like me reminding him and his buddy that they'd left empty beer cans laying around, that were lighter to carry now then when full, as they were leaving. Seen I was serious and did carry them to about 10 feet from the trash can then dumped them. I hope that restored their manhood in their minds.

    I always dress with the expectation that I might end up in the water. I only wear lightweight synthetic materials that shed water easily. No heavy jackets, rubber boots, or anything that could get waterlogged. And if the water is really cold like it gets out here on the west coast I wear a 2-3mm wetsuit under my outerwear. Luckily I have never capsized out on the water, but I'm always prepared just in case I do. You don't have to get ready if you stay ready. Stay safe out there man.

People need to know that it's the real deal out there! You don't have to be in real deep water to find yourself in real trouble! This was a good video D! Awesome video and great advice that cant be said enough! Someone has probably already said it here, but high visibility flag on a pole and a floating phone lanyard/case could also be lifesavers on big water bodies like that. Guides commonly use FRS radios too, that way you can clip it to your vest and not have to dial a phone to communicate.

    Bring along: Whistle, or 2 different whistles to make a distinct sound that you and friends agree on beforehand. Or, marine radios which are waterproof and clip on to ur life vest.... Or best: cell phone in a small tupperware container that has an actual latch. The good thing about a cell phone is they have a compass, this can help you find a friend or show you that you have drifted a lot.
    Any time you are on a large body of water with an offshore wind, kayaking is not an option. This is true even of small open boats. You are one failure away from death- a motor that won't start, a leak, out of fuel, or a dropped paddle.
    Capsizing in cold water from a kayak, you will likely die, at least with a sit-inside kayak. You will not be able to crawl back in a kayak without tipping over and exhausting and freezing yourself.
    Here in CT on Long Island Sound, several tragic incidents happen every year. It doesn't take much at all for it to happen.

    This is so cool (actually warm). Here in Bellingham WA you never go out with jeans on! The water is 44 deg F year round. The winds are usually mild, but waves can swell quickly. Your fishing looks killer. Here, kayak fishing is best on lakes (my opinion based upon my kid's comments). For kayaking, we use open-top in summer (day trips) or enclosed for winter. They closed off rockfish (a common angling fish) until it recovers in Puget Sound. We used to fish for rockfish and they were a great angling fish (med small - good meat - fillet - very mild taste - great small boat fishibng). IMO the scariest part of kayak fishing is being dunked in cold water, with swells, and having to swim after your kayak. I've done that - but not fishing - not fun, buy you swim real quick! Take care - keep up the fishing videos.

    Hobie Outback handles 3ft high waves in Lake Erie no problem. Just as reliable in big waves as an old town.

    I did a five day paddle from the mouth of the Edisto River in Charleston, South Carolina. Me and a buddy were in a 15.5 ft canoe. Did four days upriver and one day back down to the mouth. About 5 miles a day up and did the 20 back down. First day at the River mouth near the ocean it was glass calm. On our return, the wind really picked up and we hit a tide change when we were near the ocean. Had a good 3 foot swells that were serious “fun”. Buddy was done up in the front. Couldn’t do anything but lay in the bottom, hands were sunburned and he was just beat up from the trip upriver. I was in the back having a blast trying to keep us near the shore out of the big swells and still making headway to the truck. Took a chance once the truck was in sight and cut across into the big stuff to save some time. Buddy had to get on bail duty because I was digging the front into swells and getting a lot of water into the boat. Canoe was bucking and we were soaked. It was some of the most fun looking back on it, but kinda hairy while we were doing it.
    I have been looking to take my 14 foot sit in kayak out to a reef about 1.5 nm from the Edisto River and this video made me think of how different the water can get. Still want to try, but I won’t be doing the just throw in and head out without prep and researching conditions. Will definitely try talking a few people into making the trip with me. Skirt and compass are definitely something I’ll be taking, along with wearing my life vest, extra water and lots of sun protection. Maybe the radio also, especially if I can get a partner going with. Don’t want to be dropping a phone overboard if we can just use radios to keep in communication.
    Thanks for the video, stay safe out there.

    That's why it's called fishing. But a helpful video even without fish. I mean I watch both of Ron's podcast
