    You can get rebar dirt cheap at any metal recycling place. They'll sell it to you by the pound. Cut the length you need for whatever weight you want. Then heat one end until it's red hot and hammer it flat. Then drill a hole in the flat part to attach your snap swivel. Peg a float to your line just above your snap swivel and it'll hold the end up to ride over obstacles.

      Prices on most materials have come up significantly. You're right it's probly closer to a $3-4 dollar build now.

      If you have rebar laying around then the weight is free then your more like $1

    You could put the screw eye directly into the steel rod and save the cost of the dowel, tubing and contact cement.

      The tubing and dowel give a small amount of floatation to the front end of the weight making it easier to drag through grass, rocks, etc.

      I wonder if you can use the drill for the eye screw instead of allen wrench? Just Chuck the drill to the eye screw and go full tilt lol
