I love how Santa gets angry, not because he was kidnapped but because of Jack's comment about saving Christmas. The idea that being tortured for hours is more tolerable than Jack questioning his ability to save the holiday shows how caring Santa is in that universe.

I'm just remembering something watching this, that black cat Sally meets could totally be the cat from Coraline and that's the headcanon I'm gonna run with now
This movie means more to me than pretty much anyone will ever realize. I have a collectors edition blu ray dvd for this movie and a comic book that takes place after the movie(among other things.) the fact that you made a video for this movie makes me wanna cry. On top of that you taught me things about this movie which is insane cause that hardly ever happens. The light that has a face right above the band when sally walks by is something I never noticed. Some things I would point out to viewers is the fact that Sally’s song has three different versions. There’s the original, the Fiona Apple cover and the Amy Lee version. And each of them have a unique sound that makes you feel differently about the lyrics. Another thing (this is mostly personal) but every time I start this movie Halloween town has a good amount of color in it. It pops and really catches your attention. Then it transitions to Christmas town and it’s almost color overload. Then it goes BACK to Halloween town and the place has had all of the life sucked out of it. It’s like black and white it’s so jarring. I think this might have something to do with the fact that when we first see the town it’s at night so there’s more lights or something but then during the day it’s just the sunlight. If there was something cool about the movie you learned over the years please let me know! And Lee once again, thank you for this. It means more than you will ever know.
I think the part where Jack is telling Sally her nightmare is a wonderful thing is because bad things=good in Halloweentown. But I think it’s a very cool little nod to the fact that Sally was CREATED. She was not born into Halloweentown and its norms, so it makes sense that she would think “normally” or different than everyone else. You can’t program social norms, you learn them. And sally (as far as we know) was created at the age she is now so she never learned those things. Just a cool detail I didn’t even think about until watching this!
I'm personally put out by the lack of a win for "Jack, please! I'm only an elected official, I can't make decisions by myself!" (I may be misquoting slightly, it has been a while)
Little fun fact, in French Santa Klaus is called Père Noël and in the film the wrong name is Perce-oreille; it's an insect(google says it's earwig in English) and I'm almost certain that's what Oogie Boogie is.
I dressed up as Jack for Halloween but went with the alternative of Santa rather than classic. I think it was interesting seeing how truely terrifying it would be to think “SANTA!” For him to turn around to reveal a skull with long disproportionate fingers. I creeped out many of the adults who saw my costume-it was great- especially with my own height added to the mixture
Oogie Boogie crapping his burlap sack at the mere appearance of Jack is lowkey one of the most badass things in any movie ever, because apparently, to Oogie, Jack is basically what the viewer sees Oogie as.
I really related to Sally as a child, even dressing up as her for Halloween many years in a row, with my brother as Oogie Boogie. Sally is always right, yet nobody really listens to her, and she just wants someone to understand her, as well as her love for Christmas.
They nailed it on marketability. Halloween and Christmas are two of the most popular holidays of all time. To have that and everything in between for these easy to market clay figures.
Apparently, the inspiration was seeing shopping malls swapping out their Halloween ornaments for Christmas ones. Seeing the mix of the two holidays gave Tim Burton the idea to write the poem.
Jack's introduction is the best scene in disney history, to me anyway. Looking back now, I think it was the first time I fell in love with a character just before they even speak.
So HAPPY that you got to make an EGA video for this movie. Don't know what next week's EGA video (18:29) will be on, so here's a list of suggestions to consider for future videos: -Deadpool & Wolverine -We're Back: A Dinosaurs' Story -The Lost World: Jurassic Park -Arthur Christmas -The Day After Tomorrow -The Wild Robot -Night at the Museum -Star Wars: Clone Wars (2008 Movie) -2012 -Strange World
One thing I love about the French sub that I think improves it a lot, is Santa Claus' name. Santa Claus is named Le Père Noël in French (translates to Christmas Father) and Jack calls him le Perce Oreille (an earwig) as it sounds similar but not enough to make you tweak, make you know it's wrong. It also asimilates him to the myth surrounding the bug, like he'd be a terrifying insect monster that children believe truly bite people's ears, and obviously it matches the vibe of the other monsters in the town of Halloween. It is just so perfect
So awesome to see you do a real classic. One of the best animated films ever made. Fun fact: when the film opened in theaters, Patrick Stewart's narration was there. It was removed later on. I remember hearing is amazing voice in theaters opening weekend.
Spoiler for the Nightmare Before Christmas book about Sally: "Long Live the Pumpkin Queen". Dr. Finkelstein didn't create Sally. He'd tried and failed to make a daughter. He used a book of long forgotten towns. He went to 'Dream Town' to study their plants. He came across a young ragdoll, Sally, he kidnapped her and took her back to his lab. He created a plan to pass her off as his 'creation' to gain respect as a mad scientist. So, he pulled out all of her cotton stuffing and replaced it dry autumn leaves, used his plants to wipe her memory, and then passed her off as his creation. That's why he was so strict about not letting her go anywhere, he couldn't risk her remembering the truth outside of his laboratory. That's probably why she didn't react the like the rest of Halloween Town Residents about the Spooky Christmas, she's not originally not from Halloween Town. In the new book she learns the whole truth, and Jack ends up basically banishing Dr. Finkelstein to pay off his debt to Sally's parents, the Governors of Dream Land, while Sally gets unrestricted access to his lab and gardens until the end of time.
There's another book that states that Jack became Pumpkin King after winning a contest after the old king retired. It also explains his rivalry with Oogie Boogie. Though I don't consider that one canon as it contradicts a few things from previous sources.
This movie is genuinely one of my favorites. It's look is so timeless, the plot is so fun, the characters are so memorable, and the songs still haven't left my head. No matter how much time passes, I will always love this movie.
Bonus point for when Oogie Boogie realises he has been tickling a leg that is detached as a distraction and shouts "WHAAAAT?!". Just the delivery of that line was hilarious and perfect.
Apparently, the hardest scene to shoot was actually Jack's reflection on the doorknob of the door to Christmas town. It really does deserve some praise.
fun fact: the reflection shot of Jack opening the Christmas door took almost 8 months to complete and it needed especific tools and puppets for it to be done.
Blows my mind that Lee takes every opportunity to point out how creepy the wing/leg demon thing is when it spends 90% of its screen time next to the character with the most disturbing design in the film.
A movie that just works for the entire final months of the year. Henry Selick’s direction is just perfectly in tune to the Burton-style visuals, an energetic voice cast, memorable Danny Elfman songs & just a simple story for kids and adults. I can enjoy it at either Halloween or Christmas
If you read the book The Pumpkin Queen you get to visit some other towns. The back doors to St Patrick's are rainbows. You get to learn more of Sally's history. The story was approved by Disney and Tim Burton as canon.
Born in 1988. I saw this in the theater. It's been my all-time favorite movie ever since. I still own my VHS copy. I can recite the entire movie flawlessly. I specifically remember being told to go to bed for school the next day with the threat of grounding me from watching The Nightmare Before Christmas for a month. I watched it 7 times in a row that day 😊
Fun fact for you, the Nightmare Before Christmas video game on the PS2, Oogie's Revenge, actually names all the characters properly. Axe-head guy is named Behemoth :)
Catherine O'Hara voiced Sally?!?! Wow! She's such a great actress. Not once in the dozen or so times I've heard this movie have I ever made that connection.
Well, since you mentioned it.... you should totally do Wallace and Gromit Curse of the Were-Rabbit before the new Wallace and Gromit movie comes out in January. Actually, why not put Chicken Run and Arthur Christmas on that list as well. I love Aardman's stuff and the W&G movie has been a particular favorite of mine since I first saw it theaters as a kid. You've got plenty of love for Laika on the channel (I mean, duh, they're great), so why not give some of the those Brits in Bristol some love too?
Fun fact, this movie was one of the only DVDs we had at home as a kid, since we didn't have an actual DVD player I'd rush to the beat up Playstation 2 after school every. Single. Day. so I could watch it before my brothers could get home and complain that I'm hogging the TV. Because of this obsession my coolest party trick is being able to recite the entire script and give a detailed explanation of the visuals in any given scene.
i relate to your children, because when i was younger, I watched "White Christmas" on VHS whenever I went to stay at my grandmother's house, no matter the time of year. It could have been the middle of July, but I'd still be vibing to "Sisters" XD
I recently learned that they cast Danny Elfman for the singing voice of Jack before they cast his speaking voice which made casting his speaking voice much more difficult
2:20 And now I desperately want to hear a monologue delivered from Yorick's perspective, lamenting the tragedy that Hamlet's life has become, delivered as an aside to the audience by the skull while Hamlet holds it.
10:42 The voice of Igor is Joe Ranft, best known as the story guy at Pixar who also voiced Wheezy the squeeze toy penguin and Heimlich the caterpillar.
A tad disappointed you didn't bring up Danny Elfman. He not only wrote all the songs, he loved the concept so much, he provides the singing voice for Jack. Plus, as so much of the movie is in song, Danny Elfman was given a writer's credits. Yes, it came from the mind of Tim Burton, but the sound of the film is very much Danny Elfman.
I was introduced to this movie through the Oogie's Revenge video game where pretty much everyone from the movie reprises their roles (except Danny Elfman as Jack's singing voice but Jack's regular actor isn't half bad) but due to being a huge coward when I was a kid along with being lousy at video games I didn't fully appreciate this movie until I was much older. Also brief side note a few years ago there was a sequel to this movie in the form of a novel which makes Dr. Finkelstein so much worse where they reveal that he didn't make Sally he kidnapped her from another town called Dream Town. On a slightly sadder note we must bid a found farewell to both Paul Reubens who passed away last year and Ken Page who passed away earlier this years as they both provided iconic performances in this movie.
The best part of this movie is that all the tie-in video games (5 including the Kingdom Hearts games) are all obliged to include boss fights against Lock, Shock and Barrel. Never been so excited to fight literal children!
I'm surprised you missed when zero brings backs jaw bone back after he gets blown to smithereens. I always thought that was why he wasn't dead, cute doggo and master scene that throws back to when jack is playing fetch with him earlier
One of my favourite pieces of merch for this movie is the album Nightmare Revisited from 2008, where they got Emo/Alt bands to do covers for this movie. Including Fallout Boy and Flyleaf doing two different versions of What's This, Korn covering Kidnap The Sandy Claws and Amy Lee covering Sally's Song.

If there was something cool about the movie you learned over the years please let me know! And Lee once again, thank you for this. It means more than you will ever know.
I just realized when watching the video that the mayor is wearing red nail polish 😂
No win for the soul tearing line of “there goes Christmas” from the zombie toddler?
Or the glee in Oogie’s voice for the line, “Eleven” after cheating…
that toddler was soooo devastated
Yes! She's very much a Cassandra figure, with premonitions that are correct but ignored by everyone she shares them with.
This is one of my favorite movies, and I just find it hilarious how my sister is afraid of the stop motion
Please Do Nimona.
That movie is a masterpeice and is perfect.
It deserves to be watched by everyone at least once.
Fun fact. Tim Burton actually had a part in this movie. He did the barks for Zero
Zero's actually voiced by Frank Welker.
I love jack’s 😃 face when he looks down at Christmas town, it’s just like a little kid would be.
My comfort movie for sure. I can see Jack quickly becoming a comfort character of mine, and I have no problems with that.
Don't know what next week's EGA video (18:29) will be on, so here's a list of suggestions to consider for future videos:
-Deadpool & Wolverine
-We're Back: A Dinosaurs' Story
-The Lost World: Jurassic Park
-Arthur Christmas
-The Day After Tomorrow
-The Wild Robot
-Night at the Museum
-Star Wars: Clone Wars (2008 Movie)
-2012
-Strange World
Next week is definitely Furiosa
@ I knew it was either that or Deadpool & Wolverine
That's so cool - I never knew this book existed. Thanks for sharing :D
That is insane in the best way possible
There's another book that states that Jack became Pumpkin King after winning a contest after the old king retired. It also explains his rivalry with Oogie Boogie. Though I don't consider that one canon as it contradicts a few things from previous sources.
Oogey Boogie is actually the former ruler of Bug Day, who moved to Halloweentown after his holiday was forgotten.
Chris Sarandon as Jack's speaking voice should be a Win all on it's own!
Apparently, the hardest scene to shoot was actually Jack's reflection on the doorknob of the door to Christmas town. It really does deserve some praise.
Kid Danger: *wearing his mighty pup movie outfit* loving the "Nightmare before Christmas"!
Im going to appear to you in a dream and touch you
fun fact: the reflection shot of Jack opening the Christmas door took almost 8 months to complete and it needed especific tools and puppets for it to be done.
Blows my mind that Lee takes every opportunity to point out how creepy the wing/leg demon thing is when it spends 90% of its screen time next to the character with the most disturbing design in the film.
iirc Danny Elfman was the singing voice for Jack! absolutely iconic movie that had a fun video game sequel and an alright gba prequel too!
Finklestein becomes even worse when the sequel novel "Long Live the Pumpkin Queen" is pulled into consideration, which reveals Sallys true origin...
Keeping her captive, yeah. When she is constantly out on her own and off on her own adventure
This is one of my transition from Halloween to Christmas movies. Like krampus is the very first one I always watch.
Finally. They see the genius of The Nightmare Before Christmas. I’m glad you did this movie. Thank you and Happy Halloween and Merry Christmas to all.
Your uploads just warm my heart ❤.
2:29 He also has lips, which aren't possible for skulls..
Fun fact, Danny Elfman the composer for this and a lot of Tim Burton films, also did the singing voice of Jack for this movie.
You missed one. I'll help.
"Danny Elfman is always a win".
Seriously though my favorite part of this movie is anytime Jack Sings. Thank you Danny
Because of this obsession my coolest party trick is being able to recite the entire script and give a detailed explanation of the visuals in any given scene.
this is the only Christmas movie i will watch, I've also been playing a lot of kingdom hearts this year so I just picture running around here as sora
This is the best Halloween/Christmas movie
The "Thanksgiving robot pilgrims" are actually slot machines, a.k.a. "one-armed bandits." That visual pun should have been worth a win.
i relate to your children, because when i was younger, I watched "White Christmas" on VHS whenever I went to stay at my grandmother's house, no matter the time of year. It could have been the middle of July, but I'd still be vibing to "Sisters" XD
I recently learned that they cast Danny Elfman for the singing voice of Jack before they cast his speaking voice which made casting his speaking voice much more difficult
I never watched this movie when I was younger because Tim Burton’s stop motion movies use to scare the crap out of me and I wish I did lmao
Loved this, this movies is my sister's favourite❤ and you need to do one of these for Agatha all along as part of the MCU that shows great
Wonderful stuff! Had no idea O'Hara voiced both Sally and Shock.
I would love to see a breakdown of ParaNorman!
One of my all time favourite movies. This movie inspired my love for Tim Burton and had my wedding theme based on his movies.
Me when I see the thumbnail: "This is Halloween, This is Halloween" I'm back in the loop.... again.
Missed out on rewatching it for this Halloween, maybe for this Christmas...
In loving memory of Ken Page (1954-2024)
September of 2024 can suck it
This movie is built for being watched at some point in November, early enough that Halloween is still the predominant holiday over Christmas.
Oogie's Cab Calloway inspiration is perfect for such a fantastic villain. I can't not dance to his song.
The "robot pilgrims" in Oogie's lair are mechanical old west bandits. It's a play on slot machines being called "one armed bandits"
This line at 2:47 really hits you differently if you've read The Pumpkin Queen.
BOOK SPOLIERS BELOWW
He flipping gaslight her 💀
Did anyone else realize that "Making Christmas" is just "Carol of the Bells" WAY slowed down?
I'm surprised you missed when zero brings backs jaw bone back after he gets blown to smithereens. I always thought that was why he wasn't dead,
cute doggo and master scene that throws back to when jack is playing fetch with him earlier
I grew up with this movie and always loved it. I also grew up with the Oogie's Revenge video game based on it, and that's one of my favorite video games of all time
If you ever get the chance, go on the Nightmare Before Christmas ride at Disneyland. It is amazing.
This is one of my favourite films so thank you
