Kong learned to become a father to Suko and a leader for his kind. Suko developed by accepting Kong as a father and overcoming his fears of the Skar King’s second in command. Godzilla learned that Kong is not an enemy, but an ally, although Mothra needed to knock some sense into him for that. Lastly, Shimo went from being enslaved for most of her life to finally being freed and making the choice to help Godzilla and Kong defeat her enslaver.

I'm still shocked that the filmmakers were able to keep Mothra's appearance in this movie a secret. It was a genuine, and VERY welcome surprise. I've only been to the cinema twice since December. The first time was GODZILLA MINUS ONE. The second one GODZILLA X KONG. Two brand new Godzilla movies in a timespan of less than six months. I feel like I died and went to nerd Heaven.
They kept it a secret because they weren't sure if the studio (Legendary) could re-secure the rights for Mothra from TOHO after KOTM. They actually had another brand new titan on reserve if the deal didn't work out, like a plan B.
@@samcooper2474 Warner/Legendary would have had the rights secured before they finalized the script and started shooting. This was a case of a studio managing to be able to keep such a big appearance hidden until the movie opened, thus guaranteeing the opening week audience a wonderful surprise. @@szeltovivarsydroxan9944 Unfortunately, until GODZILLA VS KONG, the only "Godzilla" movie I saw in the cinema was 1998's teenage mutant ninja iguana. I never had the opportunity to see the first two big G films from the MonsterVerse in the cinema, or any of the TohoVerse until MINUS ONE.
something I love as a long-time Godzilla nerd is the purple pink shade Godzilla becomes after his cross-country kaiju hunting trip because for as wild as it is, its kind of a Godzilla reference. in Godzilla 2000 and through a lot of the millennium era Godzilla movies, his spikes did become larger and pointier almost crystalline with a purple hue to their tips. its like... whenever theyre looking for new ways to interact and engage with the monsters theyre keeping core elements there from the sources. they're finding ways to reinterpret and reinvent but keeping core elements for each of them to let you know "this is what sets them apart". Godzilla is a fundamental element, he's a force of nature that cannot and will not be stopped, he is constantly finding new wellsprings of power and using it to show how insignificant we are in the grand scheme. everything that comes against him loses and even a defeat is merely a temporary setback Kong is an animal, plain and simple, he needs enough enrichment and social engagement to be kept happy or he will lash out and a big part of ensuring that he is okay is that human element. at our best humanity has the role of caretaker for the animals around us, we form zoos, we form wildlife preserves, we form organisations to preserve and protect animals. however at our worst we displace animals into worlds they no longer recognise and that are no longer made for them. Kong is a reminder that animals and us share a world together. Mothra is a more spiritual element to the forces of nature. that everything lives even after were gone. yes right now we are the dominant species but hundreds of thousands of years ago so were dinosaurs. the roman empire thought it would last forever, the pyramids were built over 2500 years and we are still closer to the death of cleopatra than she was the completion of the pyramids. because Mothra is in a constant state of death and rebirth (much like a phoenix), she reminds us that all things are temporary and that in a moment we can all at any point die. that if we don't take care of the world the world WILL keep on spinning without us
I like how at no point in the battle does Godzilla seem like he's actively trying to really hurt/kill Shimo, like he understands that she's not doing this of her own free will.
Exactly! Honestly it's a bit annoying hearing people being like "Godzilla was just a brutal psycho in this movie!" because he's smarter than everyone thinks and he's actually a surprisingly merciful leader, he only kills other Titans if he has to and is content with sparing those who aren't threats to the world. He kills Scylla because she's defied him numerous times before and this was the last straw. He kills Tiamat because he needed the energy to fend off an imminent world-ending threat and Tia wasn't sharing. And he attacks Kong because, remember the apes once were his sworn enemies. Then suddenly he senses they've escaped. Then Kong comes to the surface. And Godzilla, with no context, assumes Kong has sided with his fellow apes. So until Mothra cleared everything up, he was just doing his job, and he trusts Mothra enough that if she trusts Kong, then so will he.
@@dracodracarys2339'he kills Tiamat because he needed the energy to fend off an imminent world-ending threat and Tia wasn't sharing' That and, like Scylla, Tiamat has shown in the past that she can't be trusted. I'm also convinced G and Shimo have history as allies, hence why he was holding back in their interactions during the fight, like he was trying to stop Shimo from causing too much damage while attempting to get through to her. I hate how jealous G haters and Kong fans deliberately miss-contextualise this as Shimo being the stronger titan, since we know for a fact there are in lore titans whom Godzilla actually respects enough to consider his equal.
One thing I like, the sound Godzilla makes when he sees Mothra is the same sound he makes at the end when he turns and looks at Kong before blasting into the air to stop the ice storm, making me think it’s his way of saying “friend” or at atleast “Ally”
10:19 I kept thinking "Boy" every time Kong had the axe over his should like that. That was very much the dynamic I was getting - Norse God of War 15:40 I expected her to be back since she died. I mean Mothra once died in the first 5 minutes of a movie. The bulk of he movie there was a giant plant by the coast. Then Mothra came back from the plant. Mothra is magic. She always comes back. This was the ideal situation to bring her back in this incarnation. 16:27 Mommy Mothra saying: "GODZILLA! Stop hitting your little brother and listen!" - I still cannot bring myself to think "Shimo". "Cryolante" seems like a way more fitting name to me.
Yeah, Mothra died several times in the original movies, but always had some eggs as backups. I wasn't even upset when Mothra died in KOTM because she could - and almost certainly would - come back sooner or later.
I was expecting something along the lines of 'turned him into sushi' cause that's exactly what G did. Also, love the visual reference to KOTM when he tossed the head aside.
So I want to add two amazing pieces of context for this movie. First, Mothra. She appears so little because they weren't sure they were even going to GET the rights to use Mothra, and so were covering their bases with a backup monster to fill the same role just in case. And Second, you'd think there might be more opposition to this with Minus One about in the Japanese fanbase right? WRONG. The Japanese fanbase, by and large, seems to adore that they have both a silly Showa era style Godzilla film, and a serious disaster-esque Heisei style Godzilla film so close to one another. To them, it's the two cakes sort of thing.
It’s not just Japan, basically every real Godzilla fan is ecstatic that we get to have these serious stories right alongside the goofy, absurd monster-punch-monster action.
1:20, Doug is way, way bigger than anyone seemingly gives him credit for. Everyone, self included, seems to picture him as a mid-sized dog compared to Kong's silverback, when in reality he's comparatively more the size of a decently large crocodile or a big alligator.
This movie is unapologetically fun. And as a long time Godzilla fan, it really spoke to that kid from 20 years ago who would rent the Japanese Godzilla movies from Blockbuster.
It's the closest we've gotten to a Showa Godzilla film since the actual Showa era. Just untamed wackiness, crazy sci-fi plots and plenty of monster wrestling. Haruo Nakajima would be proud.
@@dracodracarys2339'Just untamed wackiness'. Nah, these films still have a ways to go before we reach peak showa wackiness. We still haven't seen anything as outlandish as dancing Godzilla or nuclear breath propulsion flight Godzilla. Fans tend to forget that the showa era did all that with no context other than 'its fun for kids'. At least the monsterverse actually bothers to contextualise a lot of it's crazy shit.
I recall that during the Zero-gravity fight, Godzilla seemed to adapt to it about as quickly as Skar King did, and that made a lot of sense because he's in his element maneuvering through water-- low gravity would probably feel pretty similar to swimming
Exactly!! Dude knows the names of all the Titans even when most aren't said on screen, but ignores the multiple "she" references? Shaking and Crying right now😂
My favourite detail that may be unintentional is that Godzilla had a home in King of the Monsters that was an ancient temple of sorts and since that was destroyed Godzilla has now chosen the Roman Coliseum as his new home. It's a great symbol of him accepting modern humans and forgiving them for making Mechagodzilla.
Fun Fact: Suko is the size Kong from his first movie and the only reason Kong got larger is because he was raised on a island not in hollow earth like the others.
He was healthy, and well fed. He grew up and stayed in an environment that has fresh air. The other apes spent their entire lives living in a lava hellscape with horrible air full of ash and lava fumes with little to no food. And naturally, it was very hot and they had no sunlight. So yeah, Kong was definitely healthier
4:58 Hey @cinemawins-it’s a piece of score written for the movie. Not all of the cues in movies are always on the soundtrack. Source: I’m one of the editors on the movie 😊
Mothra stayed in hollow earth to keep other apes from following through the portal to help skar king. It was a good plot device to keep the final fight to a tag team before the crystal was destroyed by Suko.

And seeing someone just as hyped up for them is so nice and wholesome. Thank you CINEMAWINS for loving movies! ❤
I legitimately think Skar King found the Great Apes' role as humanity's protection pointless, maybe he witnessed many other apes get killed by titans going after humans and probably were kept heavily in check by Godzilla's species. It likely got to a point where he instigated a war between the two species in order to assume his role as the new alpha. You definitely need to do Minus One soon. So different but so fantastic in a way so different than this
This is the only movie channel I never miss. The best! Also, CW, thank you for your closed captions! Would you please PLEASE include the movie clip closed captions as well? Your narration is loud and clear, while the movie dialog is often soft-spoken or covered with other sounds. Thank you!
I just about cried when Mothra returned. I still love this one, and my bf won't stop singing praises about it. Also, I love how Shimo's expression was when she saw Big G fire off his atomic breath toward the sky. After she had been imprisoned for so long under Skar King's control, I can only describe it as awe
I love how much of a cruel, sadistic bastard the Skar King is. It helps him stand out so much from other Kaiju villains, who are usually just mindless animals or being controlled by aliens.
I don't think this has been the best made of the Monsterverse movies, but it is absolutely my favorite. Seeing Godzilla and Kong fight together for that long a period and actually helping each other so much during the fight is one of the best cinematic moments I've ever seen in my life. That alone shows why there are some movies that just need to be seen in theaters to truly experience them.
gotta throw in a little love for Shimo’s sound design, it’s like a turbine and a bad windstorm mixed with a grizzly bear. that, and the 7 minutes of all-monster footage are fantastic and genuinely immersive without a word spoken
What I love about the Legendary Monsterverse is that they successfully navigate Marvel's success with the first three phases of the MCU, in that most of the movies have a distinct feel to them, but are recognizably in the same universe. Godzilla (2014) had a fairly grim, realistic tone, which Kong: Skull Island mostly followed, while subtly introducing some fantastic elements, which as Lee pointed out has been increasingly leaned into as the franchise has progressed. And that makes a certain narrative sense in that the awakening of the MUTOs and Godzilla's subsequent reappearance after presumed decades of little to no activity essentially kicks off humanity coming to the realization that the world isn't remotely what we thought it was. I am looking forward to whatever comes next and genuinely hope we get to see some more classic Godzilla monsters in the future (particularly curious to see if we ever get a Monsterverse Gigan, who design-wise was always my favorite Godzilla foe). However, even if they never made another movie in this franchise, it has had a fantastic run and my sort of lackluster interest in the film that kicked it off aside, the bulk of the Legendary Monsterverse really has stolen my heart as an old school kaiju fan.
12:26 - Yes, me too. Even as a 28-year-old woman, when two people are arguing nearby, I always think it's my fault. 😢 I have a fear of upsetting people. If I think they're upset, I start panicking, even if they aren't actually upset.
I may not be into the Monsterverse due to the fast movement and the flashing lights (ex; the Godzilla's atomic breath) however I do appreciate how much effort is put in these movies and the story as well! I do have a questions for ya, can you do an review for Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron? It is my favorite comfort movie and it has helped me through my life. It has a beautiful message and beautiful animations along with amazing songs/music. I know that it is made by Dreamworks but still!
What would a Planet of the Apes/Monsterverse crossover look like? (*POTA Apes living in peace and harmony*) Godzilla: (*Unintentionally wrecks the well-camouflaged forest colony, while heading back to Rome for a nap, after putting another titan down*) Kong: (*Totally unaware of what happened, due to partying with his new crew down in Hollow Earth*) End Credits Total runtime: The first 5 minutes of a Monsterverse movie
Goji spent the last two movies hearing voices; there’s the ghidorah alpha call he kept hearing every time they tested mecha godzilla and then the iwi distress signal in this movie. He had no clue what the danger was he just kept hearing threats and either ran to confront them or rushed back and forth to fix smaller problems/help increase his own power because he didn’t know what the warnings were about yet.

Thank you for pointing out the visuals and sound design. So underappreciated. My favorite piece is actually when Godzilla and Kong arrive at Hollow Earth. After Shimo gets rid of the flock of Vertiscine and we see Scar, you can hear Godzilla's roar. Scar looks worried and pissed. GxK shoot out of the vortex, and you can hear the bomb whistle before impact. Their entrance together had me rolling with fun laughter in the theater. My kids and i loved this movie!

I absolutely LOVE the way they portray entire communications with so many non speaking characters. And the fact you can actually SEE everything happening, its not completely obscured in impenetrable shadows. Even my 76 yo mother loved it. Its just FUN
I've been a huge Godzilla fan since I was a 6 year old kid in the early 90's, and I absolutely love the MonsterVerse. Can't get enough of these. It really feels like old school Showa era Toho.
You say that like you never did. Hell, in my family, we throw a party the first time you need that kind of help. What kind of weird, messed up family did you grow up in?
16:00 people keep calling Godzilla stupid here, but let me lay it out for you: Goji fought Kong before, but because of their bonding over mechagodzilla, tolerated his existence in hollow earth, as long as he stays sown there. Godzilla gets a signal that he knows means The Scar King is back, so he needs to power up FAST. He yoinks some radiation from humans, and consumes a stache that's been building in the ice for millenia, all to prepare for an invasion of Scar King's kind. Next, he hears Kong Roar, not just trespassing on Goji's territory, but actively roaring, which can be read as a confrontation. The only logical conclusion is that Kong has joined Scar King and is attacking the surface, if you know what Goji does. I'm sure his judgement call was also altered by the fact that Goji has already fought a war against Scar King and all the Kings in past, so trusting one that you already have a tumultuous relationship with to NOT choose its own kind, just is not an option in Goji's mind. That, and the power ups he has flowing through him, are more than enough reason to not risk it and just attack.
4:06 not always the most careful but he is taking care to stick to water and roadways, probably more so because trampling every building would be a hassle but it is still nice of him to

In a day and age where a lot of big surprises are spoiled no later than two weeks before opening day.
@@drhacknslashzombietimelord6768 I didn't even KNOW that this movie had even been MADE, until I went to see "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and saw the poster for it at the theater.
Godzilla Minus One was the first movie since Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019 that I went to the cinema.
Godzilla is a fundamental element, he's a force of nature that cannot and will not be stopped, he is constantly finding new wellsprings of power and using it to show how insignificant we are in the grand scheme. everything that comes against him loses and even a defeat is merely a temporary setback
Kong is an animal, plain and simple, he needs enough enrichment and social engagement to be kept happy or he will lash out and a big part of ensuring that he is okay is that human element. at our best humanity has the role of caretaker for the animals around us, we form zoos, we form wildlife preserves, we form organisations to preserve and protect animals. however at our worst we displace animals into worlds they no longer recognise and that are no longer made for them.

@@dracodracarys2339'he kills Tiamat because he needed the energy to fend off an imminent world-ending threat and Tia wasn't sharing'
That and, like Scylla, Tiamat has shown in the past that she can't be trusted.
I agree. This just makes him even more understanding and reinforces the fact why he’s tasked with maintaining the balance in nature.
@@samcooper2474Godzilla and Shimo were ancient allies to each other, she was the one who froze Ghidorah after Godzilla fought him the first time.
Godzilla hit her with the atomic breath he was absolutely trying to hurt her.
One thing I like, the sound Godzilla makes when he sees Mothra is the same sound he makes at the end when he turns and looks at Kong before blasting into the air to stop the ice storm, making me think it’s his way of saying “friend” or at atleast “Ally”
My favourite scene is the look Godzilla gives Mothra, so sick, and humanizing.

Stop hitting your little brother and listen!"
- I still cannot bring myself to think "Shimo". "Cryolante" seems like a way more fitting name to me.
Shimo kinda looks like an Ice Anguirus, personally.

I was expecting something along the lines of 'turned him into sushi' cause that's exactly what G did. Also, love the visual reference to KOTM when he tossed the head aside.
WTF does Hawk Tuah even mean?

Kong must have seen the light show display while he was sitting out during KOTM.
Kong calls the atomic breath the 'bad breath' in then novel
“Kitty Lizard” is amazing. That is henceforth what i call Goji.
What I love about the movie is that it’s basically just a showa era Godzilla film on crack and with CGI
Mothra stayed in hollow earth to keep other apes from following through the portal to help skar king. It was a good plot device to keep the final fight to a tag team before the crystal was destroyed by Suko.
I really love this channel for defending movies. I adore movies like these for the sheer spectacle and fun. But that doesn't mean they're dumb. They are movies and worth watching for what they are.
Thank you!
This is big budget Showa Era and I'm here for it... and this is still not the most ridiculous thing Gman has ever done in movies
When will we get the MV drop kick? They HAVE to reference it at some point right?
Yea it was such a vibe watching it in theaters.
My favorite thing is that Godzilla appears to do a perfect electric wind god fist from Tekken to Scylla at the start.
gotta throw in a little love for Shimo’s sound design, it’s like a turbine and a bad windstorm mixed with a grizzly bear. that, and the 7 minutes of all-monster footage are fantastic and genuinely immersive without a word spoken
Kaylee Hottle as Jia was adorable.
Also as well they have the TV series Monarch that allows you to dive further into the Monsterverse
Adding gigan and anguirus would make me cry actual tears of joy
I’m DESPERATE for Battra to show up. She’d fit right in, and I don’t think it’d be remotely difficult to implement.

Goji spent the last two movies hearing voices; there’s the ghidorah alpha call he kept hearing every time they tested mecha godzilla and then the iwi distress signal in this movie. Was waiting for this one. You never disappoint!
16:00 people keep calling Godzilla stupid here, but let me lay it out for you:
Goji fought Kong before, but because of their bonding over mechagodzilla, tolerated his existence in hollow earth, as long as he stays sown there.
