  • Our quest to find the greatest sleeping pad on the planet boiled down to two options. In this video, Jason and I debate the pros and cons of our two finalists, the Big Agnes Rapide SL and the Big Agnes Boundary Deluxe. We each picked a different winner due to our personal preferences...which we discuss as a summer storm bears down on our location. But we both agree you can't go wrong with either of these tent sleeping pads!

    I bought the Boundary Deluxe last fall and absolutely love it! Extremely comfortable, warm, and quiet. I sleep with a quilt. I use a fitted sheet, but the texture on the top of the pad feels like velvet. It would be fine to just lay on the mattress with no sheet. I motorcycle camp and have lots of room for my gear, so the size is not an issue.

    • @MotoPhotoAdventures
      @MotoPhotoAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's awesome! I'm glad you love yours as much as Jason loves his. And honestly, the Rapide SL has the exact same construction...just without the velvet surface material. Since I use the Diamond Park sleep system, my air mattress is covered like a fitted sheet by the silky fabric of the bag. So I didn't feel the need for the extra fabric. Check out how that works: th-cam.com/video/KT4R8rxBV-Y/w-d-xo.html. And also check out this awesome trick for pumping up your mattress: th-cam.com/video/5tS2Op_zajY/w-d-xo.html.

    This is the review that I was looking for. Thanks. I'm still using an Exped Downmat 9 that I've had for 12 years and it has performed flawlessly but is beginning to show it's age and I'm researching for a replacement.

    You mentioned how well they both work with Big Agnes sleep system bags. I would question how well the 30" wide pad works with a system bag. The wider pad spreads the bag out much wider leaving big air spaces on either side and harder to snuggle the bag up to your body for extra warmth. I've tried my BA sleep system bag with both a 20" and a 25" wide boundary pad. The 20" pad results in a much warmer system. I would suspect that 30" pad would make it even tougher to stay warm. FYI: I'm 6' and 200lbs. your mileage may vary...a much larger person probably would not have the issues I had.

      I have the 30" pad and the Diamond Park 30º bag and I'm 6'0" tall. We had a night in the 40s the other day at the Palmetto ADV Rally and I was pretty comfortable without long johns on, LOL. It does help very much if you use the drawstrings near the shoulders and head to keep heat in for sure! But I didn't find the 30" pad a hinderance. In fact I prefer the tighter fit. Feels like sheets at home. Thanks for the great question!

      On the Flextail, I just pressed the one that fit the pad's intake the best and held it there. It doesn't "attach" to the pad. It's a bit of a pain and I might upgrade at some point. Thanks for watching and the question!

    Just purchased the boundary deluxe large pad. Looking for an air pump that works well with the big agnes valve for kayak camping and mule packing in the wildness. Thoughts on the two pumps that ya'll used in the video? Suggestions?

    • @MotoPhotoAdventures
      @MotoPhotoAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's awesome! You're going to love that pad!!! Personally, I would go with neither air pump. I'd go with this: th-cam.com/video/5tS2Op_zajY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zjme9YQe8Jdc1bu7. We just came back from 8 days of camping/riding around Nova Scotia. I used my Exped Widget pump as a night-light a few times. And I used it to inflate my pad the first night. The second night I used my Pumphouse Ultra...and when done properly you can actually inflate your pad FASTER...you don't have to worry about charging the pump...and you don't have that annoying high-pitched motor disturbing your wilderness mojo! I only used the Pumphouse Ultra the rest of the trip. It was awesome!!! If you decide to go with a pump, the Exped is definitely faster than the Amazon one Jason used. However, it doesn't have a direct-fit nozzle for Big Agnes. So you have to use the generic one...which is kinda meh. Nothing wrong with it. I just think it would be nice if they included a nozzle that actually fit the mattress. They include nozzles for other brands, just not BA.

    To anyone who’s reading this:
    I’m just getting into camping and I lug a heavy inflateable mattress so I’m looking at replacing that with this. How does this actually work? Can i have a reflective mat under it and then me straight on top of this with just a rumpl as a blanket? I only camp in spring and summer. Thank you

    • @MotoPhotoAdventures
      @MotoPhotoAdventures  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Honestly, both these sleeping pads are fantastic! But if you don't mind the slightly larger pack size, the Boundary Deluxe adds extra insulation and extra comfort that you will love!!! We personally combine these pads with the Big Agnes Diamond Park sleeping pad for the best of all worlds. But if you're just going to throw a blanket over you, go for the Boundary Deluxe because it has a soft fabric coating on top.

    Doesn't the Rapide SL have, in fact, a 4.8 R-value, not 4.2, vs the Boundary Deluxe's 4.3? Currently shopping for my first sleeping pad as a new backpacking 6'4" 250 pd side sleeper that moves around a lot, and just tested the Nemo Tensor All-Season Ultralight Insulated and the REI Helix. Hoping one of these Big Agnes pads would be the most comfortable one. As an aside, the sleeping bag I'm testing is the Nemo Disco 15, but I may explore Enlightened quilts.

    • @MotoPhotoAdventures
      @MotoPhotoAdventures  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would double-check those numbers with Ben at Moto Camp Nerd. If you are serously researching this line of higher-end light-weight products, he is THE EXPERT, and the one to talk to. He and his wife are passionate campers who run a small store that specializes in these sorts of items. They usually have the best deals too...so I encourage you to buy from them instead of those big box chain stores. Now, about your question, I'm pretty sure the Boundary Deloxe has a better R value than the Rapide SL. That's because it has a special extra layer of soft fabric on the surface. Best part about that is it makes the sleeping pad super quiet for those of us who roll around a lot. If memory serves correctly when we tested a bunch of other brands, including the Nemo Tensor, in Moto Camp Nerd's store, the Nemo was really loud. It crinkled and crackled every time we turned over...which is something I hate because it wakes me up (and often wakes my buddies up in their tents nearby). I'm not sure if it was the "Tensor All-Season Ultralight Insulated"...but I know it was a Nemo that was really loud! This is the kind of thing you don't read about in reviews. So again, buying from a store like MCN where you can actually lay them out on the floor, test drive them, and get feedback from the owners who routinely test varous products out themselves, is invaluable! Also, definitely check out our review of the Big Agnes Diamond Park sleeping bag: th-cam.com/video/KT4R8rxBV-Y/w-d-xo.htmlsi=KtLL8b32_hcWlchp. BEST NIGHT'S SLEEP EVER in a sleeping bag...it truly is remarkeable! Plus, if you end up with a BA sleeping pad, consider this awesome accessory: th-cam.com/video/5tS2Op_zajY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=NxezR6-XMuJAoa-R. And finally, the Nemo pillows are FANTASTIC: th-cam.com/video/pnLVaVwsdLI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=8ux1uFhE1GqBL5k3. Cheers...

    I would really like some detailed info on Rapid vs Boundary models in general (not just specs)
    To me Boundary Deluxe looks like the replacement for Rapid and specs seem identical, when accounting for size difference.

    • @Jason_MotoPhotoAdventures
      @Jason_MotoPhotoAdventures ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very similar. Boundary one has a "felt-feeling" top liner that the Rapide doesn't. - Jason

    • @MotoPhotoAdventures
      @MotoPhotoAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In connection with what Jason said, the "pack size" of the Boudary Deluxe is a bit larger than the Rapid SL, in part due to that thicker "felt-feeling" liner. However, when inflated, the dimensions and patterns of both are very similar. - Chris

    • @67L48
      @67L48 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For a 25x78" pad, the Boundary Deluxe is 35 oz to Rapide's 25 oz. Similarly, the packed size is 6x9 (254.5 in2) vs 4.5x8 (127.2 in2). For the same size, the Boundary Deluxe is 40% heavier and 100% larger in pack volume. Most people wouldn't consider those specs anywhere near identical.
