  • In this video, Dr. Kamal Singh speaks about Shift-Work Sleep Disorder, the symptoms, management, complications and lifestyle tips. Shift Work Sleep Disorder (SWSD) is a circadian rhythm sleep disorder affecting individuals with nontraditional work hours, such as overnight, early morning, or rotating shifts.

Symptoms of SWSD include insomnia, difficulty falling or staying asleep, hypersomnia, excessive sleepiness during work hours, difficulty concentrating, headaches, lack of energy, and mood disturbances. Diagnosis involves keeping a sleep journal for at least two weeks and assessing factors such as sleep patterns, restfulness, and potential disruptors. If symptoms persist for at least three months, further tests may be conducted to rule out other conditions like sleep apnea.
While there is no cure for SWSD, various treatments aim to address core features such as circadian misalignment, sleepiness, and sleep disturbances. Strategies include changes to work routines, bright light therapy, melatonin, sleep medications, and other medicines. Adjusting work and sleep routines, using light therapy, and managing caffeine intake are suggested lifestyle changes. Despite these measures, SWSD can lead to complications such as poor work performance, higher accident risk, mood issues, and potential long-term health risks.
Exposure to bright light can help shift the circadian rhythm, especially for individuals transitioning between different shift types. Using light therapy in the morning to adjust to earlier wake-up times and in the evening for those adapting to night shifts. Light avoidance, such as wearing sunglasses after a night shift, may minimize alertness-promoting effects. In summary, SWSD is a challenging condition, and managing its symptoms involves a combination of lifestyle changes, medical interventions, and adjustments to environmental cues.
