THANK YOU CAROLINE for giving me the whimsical living room of my dreams!! 🤩🤩 I’m so happy I got to see the video IN THE ROOM you redesigned for me 🥰 your creativity is contagious! should we redesign my bedroom in part two? 👀
Oh man I love this format. The restrictions really teach design principles rather than the assumption that buying new stuff is the only fix. A lot of design shows rely on totally gutting a space and replacing it were all-new stuff for the "big transformation" shock value at the end of the episode, but a lot of the time those spaces end up looking all alike and have none of the actual resident's real personality in them. This is so much better.
Ten times agree. This is so much better than the - we'll do it all and surprise you model. The end result has so much more character when the owner's stuff is included/involved.
Me, a designer, sobbing bc this is why design is so special. It's not about high priced fancy new things. It's about being feeling embraced by your surroundings, in a space that feels like you. 10/10!!!!! (also, agree electrical is terrifying)
Yes, same here! I was saying that out loud to her from the very first when she moved the table. I speak from being tall & having long legs…needed to have the chairs out from against the wall or my bod never would have fit back there.
I love the idea of INVOLVING the homeowner in the make over (versus the traditional model of not showing them until it’s down). The collaboration between you both made the project better.
As someone who thinks all your videos are a 10/10, these $0 makeovers are hands downs at least a 20/10. So much inspiration and creativity!! You are a true talent!

I'm an interior designer and I love how much you emphasize the importance of getting into the space and moving things around. This is the key to good design, you have to experience the space, see and feel how it affects you, how the light comes in, how you enter and exit a room, what paths of travel and sight lines you see from different areas in the space. Thank you for your personality, it's clear you feel deeply the world around you, so it is wonderful how you've channelled those talents into reading and improving others spaces! :)
Thank you Alejandra for opening up your home! Your style is amazing, I love it so so much. Your playful creativity and passion for art really shines through in this space ❤🌞 This video series continues to blow me away. Every. Single. Time.
This x 1000❤ I was so nervous to do my first in-person subscriber makeover and Alejandra was an absolute dream - so creative, so open, friendly, kind, and a gigglefest
A perfect example of how two creative minds can bounce off one another. You gave her a much better layout, cohesion, and editing and she even helped improve on your improvements with her suggestion in the dining idea, your idea gave her an idea! That’s what I loved most about this video. Was it wasn’t just all someone coming in and saying, “this is how you do it” and changing it. It was organic, dynamic and turned out fantastic! We could see you both got something out of the whole experience. 😊
I spray-painted a chandelier while it was still hung attached to the ceiling, and for weeks thereafter I was finding errant & hugely unwelcome overspray in the oddest places. No bueno, I don’t care how ‘carefully’ you think you’re applying the spray lol. HUGE improvement in the space, it’s amazing!

I’m 57, I’m a real estate appraiser, so I’ve seen a million houses. Interior design is a hobby of mine. I will tell you the most beautiful homes were the ones that they were brave with their decor. Bold colors & accessories, etc. Great job!!
Can't believe how that pink paint and the ceiling and window paint made the wall colour work. It was so drab before and without making the room look like a five-year-old's bedroom, you have pulled everything together. Fantastic.
Alejandra is a darling ❤. What a perfect match for your first subscriber makeover. I love this series of no buy or low buy makeovers. It inspired me to move a few pieces around in my house and it nudged some stuck design energy out of the way and I’m finally figuring out how I want to solve an ongoing issue I’ve been having in my kitchen. It also inspired me to make a writing/crafting space for myself and I finally have made a start in learning how to sew - something I’ve been wanting to do for a decade but never felt ready to do because I knew it would be too disruptive and cumbersome if I had to lug the machine out and put it away all the time. My point is, these makeovers aren’t even remotely trivial. Our environments impact us a LOT in ways we don’t realize. The hit of inspiration, the changing of the energy in our spaces, the making our spaces more usable can release us to try new and scary things in other areas of our lives. Yup, just love this, Caroline. It turned out so well !! It’s personal, it’s inviting, and it accomplished what Alejandra was hoping for. Awesome ❤
@northwoodfalls1403 So excited for you with making progress on solving a frustration in your kitchen, and in making space for your creative practice! Cheering you on!
Thank you for showing that you don't need a whole team to do a great make over! I'd much rather see a happy subscriber who worked with you to create the space that they love, than an exciting reveal of a room I'll never be able to pull off myself.
There was an HGTV show in the early 2000s called Freestyle. The decorator did exactly what you are doing. He went into a space and redecorated with not spending any money. I loved that show. Another HGTV show that was very long running back in the day was Decorating Cents where the decorator did a room makeover for under $500. There was also a segment where the decorator made over a room without spending any money. I loved the room but can I be honest? The ceiling as a little Beetlejuice for my taste. But your client was pleased so that's what counts.😊
Yes! I thought of Freestyle too. I loved that show, and it inspired me so much because I usually have zero budget but love making my home pretty anyway. I have missed shows like that so much as everything on HGTV got to be about big money and major renos, which is why TH-cam creators like Caroline are so needed. And appreciated!
@@annefrazer6629 this inspired me to see if there are any episodes on TH-cam, and there are a few. The host, Aaron Foster, even has a channel! youtube.com/@aaronfosterchannel?si=rsqM9ip_AjTJ0NMs
Oh yes I loved both of those shows!!! HGTV changed their format and ideals. A lot of it is geared toward people with plenty of money! I liked the tips and tricks for my home that are fun and reasonably priced ❤
Fabulousness!!! I thought it was SO ADORABLE before. I absolutely love the ceiling and re do on the chandelier!!!! And the floor plan is fantastic. Moving that bench on the other side of the table is genius and adding the pillows makes it look built in. Agree removing the valances and that detail above the windows that Alejandra is everything. That lamp to hang in the corner…creativity at its best. I love this zero dollar make over SO VERY MUCH.
What a wonderful project! The combination of two artistic and talented women is a 10. And good for you for doing something scary. (I think you made a new friend.)
Your advice from another video about using the things you already got, just move them around and find a right place for them was the best advice about interior design I have ever gotten. I went straight into my storage and what I thought I shoved away and never will use and will have to sell to buy new things - ALL of it found a new life and I could not believe how could I not thought of using it all elsewhere. THANK YOU!
ok at first i wasnt too keen on the painted ceiling but then with the chandelier in place it was like... woah!! really great work, this series is so inspiring
This is my favourite design series!! Your creativity really shines in these 0$ makeovers. Ever since you have been doing it, I have started shopping my home more for inspiration. ❤
Thank you for saying you don’t need a rug in the dining room. With three small children, a hard surface under the table is a must and I hate that it isn’t fully accepted in the interior design world.
Right? I would have spent every mealtime stressed out watching my kids eat in case they spilled anything on a rug. It's hard enough keeping the rug in the living room safe from kids and animals😊
I don't think that this is a no no in the interior design world, though. We also have a combined living room/dining room and two rugs would compete too much.
i love the spirit of this! I've been a chronic zero dollar room makeover person every 3 months for my whole life. It's so refreshing to invent new ways to use a space. That's why I love your channel Caroline, you make things look beautiful, but also truly functional, which is where we all live!
aaahhhh my favorite part of the day!!! eating a bowl of oats and drinking some ginger tea, sitting and watching you caroline, i love this make over it turned out so cute!!!!!!
This series has inspired me so much Caroline! It’s sustainable, it’s budget friendly, it’s for people who do like to play and optimize their home and have a fresh feeling without the guilt that comes with consuming / buying new. Lots of love from ze German subscribers!
this is the first video of yours I have watched and I now need an entire series of this. loveeee the aspect of not buying things. we need that reminder that new doesn't = better
This was so inventive! I love seeing how you shift things and cuten them up. Truly invaluable to witness your process! I LOVE this!!! And I SO love your channel. You feel like my quirky sister-friend who I love hearing from. I'm a DC native, and seeing you, and you in these spaces warms my heart so much, and your personal style is so stinking good. I love your fun - I am SO glad you're doing this, Caroline. You are so much fun, so silly, so real, and I love your design ideas. Really great. Sincerely -- thank you for how you show up in the world. You are truly a gift. Sending big hugs and love! Thank you!❤
This is my favourite way to re-design/decorate! It's always so much fun, and yes, being limited by what you have allows creativity to blossom. Love this make over. Beautiful job.
Leftover paint is my go to. The secret is to know when to stop. At this very moment I can see 4 murals/accents in related colors that give my house the illusion that it holds more furniture and art than it actually does. Haven't done a ceiling mural in this house yet, but I have in the past. Might slap one up in the hallway TODAY. Great video.
I just freakin’ love you, Caroline. You are so down to earth and help everyone be able to decorate without having a bazillion dollars! Keep ‘em coming, but also no pressure!
I loved how Alejandra was involved throughout the process! The light from the window reaching the couch wasn't even on the radar when deciding where to put the couch, but it was the detail that solidified where to put it.
This is much better. Great to have table near entrance to put down groceries, etc. Like the bench against wall. If you do part two hope to see her Mom's light. TFS ❤❤😊😊
You did a wonderful job on rearranging the space. You successfully elevated a very cute space into something quite stylish. The chandelier upgrade was an inspiration. Congratulations to both of you on a job well done!
I honestly don’t believe anyone would be disappointed by your take and styling. You certainly have a knack for making a room come to life. I’m not one to let many people inside my home, but if you ever find yourself in S La, you are more than welcome to come and do some rearranging! 💕 Love Alejandra’s space.
Hi Caroline, Your a breath of fresh air from other decorators I follow. I never saw you until 4:30 am now on 10/6. I live 8 min from DC in Arlington in the Westover area which was one of the first little areas of Arlington that was started. I rent and I hope to buy, by next Spring. I never reached my goal of owning when I was 30, 40, 50. Low salaries always buy, now I am doing better. I presently live in a 3rd floor Flat, no elevator, washer and dryer in a diff building. I have a disabled leg so groceries and laundry are very trying. Presently I work 10 hours a day and most Saturdays leading up to inventory at my job where I have been for 20 years. My space is 610 sq ft and I am overwhelmed inheriting large pieces of wonderful furniture from my Mom who passed away in 2021. I had the movers bring all in and put in areas I mapped out on my own grid paper and before all the boxes and lots of loose objects were brought up, it seemed like a good style. But, the placement of the dining room table and china closet is not working and having the couch directly next to the window pros and cons. In my mind I have a better solution but first have to make the blob of boxes and large heafty bags of fabric and craft supplies find a home and wood crates of all my crafts and books. My place looks like a storage unit and I am overwhelmed and after yesterday working on Saturday all day I came home and laid down. I literally was in pain with my leg and foot issues and I have terrible guilt that I cannot have my Dad for dinner my sister over my boyfriend over. I am not allowed to take vac in October not allowed to even go to the Dr in Oct per my boss. My first real apartment on my own was huge and beautiful and large glass doors facing a fountain. Windows were ceiling to floor literally 6 of them. I had a dining room, 2 walk in closets elevator and I was there for 20 years. My resident mgr loved my space with vintage artwork and my own refinishing of furniture and pops of color from curb side finds. Funky shaped plant stands people built and painted black I did a u-turn for and brought it home and within an hour I was home from Home Depot and on my balcony sanding stripping etc etc. Watching this video has given me incentive and I actually felt excitement in my brain and a pitter patter in my heart seeing this makeover. I do want a nice place. The organizing companies I called will only take on 2 bedroom spaces so it's up to me. Now today, Sunday, it's 5:25 am. Pick up my Dad for church and then to lunch with my Dad than a nap for me after I drop him off. I do not do housework on Sundays but today I really want to finish organizing my kitchen which literally has only had 3 cabinets to house food and dishes. I have wine glasses (I use for oj, soda etc) pots and pans in my fridge. A bookcase my Dad made me when I was 9 is for cookbooks and our plates, nice serving dishes for holidays from my Mom. I have from Home Goods a beautiful white bookcase I carried up myself for my blender, juicer from the 60s that was my Mom and still works ( I will be taking that with me to heaven. I am very sentimental about that. My Mom never bought juice she always made us juice). I have a mug collection but I have stopped buying mugs now because of this apartment. My goal was to get my place ready by my bday in Sept. Now it's when my niece comes home in Oct for a visit from college so she and my sis can come. I have a craft sale (3 days) end of October and I'm standing in the kitchen making everything because I cannot get to my dining room table. I need umph after work. It's very embarrassing to me. But, I really am excited about your ideas in here for a layout that will work. I do not own a TV. Haven't watched TV for many years but, I do have a fireplace as my focal point. Haven't a ceiling light at all. I have coal buckets from my Mom's childhood made into lamps and end tables dating back to my great grandmother's house but the main furniture is Ethan Allen furniture from my Mom and her couch was newly recovered months before she was diagnosed with cancer. Having it by the window I have to cover it up every morning and is hard to open the windows. Well, I shall close this novel. I wonder where your based out of being that you were in DC. I definitely want to check out those socks. I need good socks with my one foot issue and where I work we do not have heat and my feet freeze every winter. Have a happy Fall I look forward to seeing more videos. Blessings, Rebekah If your ever in Arlington come to the one block town of Westover on Washington Blvd. The hardware store/variety store family owned since the 60s you would love. Trade Roots you would love with a cafe attached. I spend all my OT money in there.
This is so beautiful! And so fun to see a bit of a different style. I love that you say restrictions promote creativity. I’ve always found this in every type of art medium (writing, drawing, home stuff, etc). Without restrictions, I have no direction or clue
It's so inspiring to see how simple editing and curating a space can make such a difference! We're conditioned to constantly add more, which often confuses and kind of messes things up. The choice to remove the second carpet was brilliant, it opened the area up and allowed it to breath (even though it was pretty cute to start with). You have a real gift for this Caroline, can't wait to see more!! 👏💐
WoW, it looks like a totally different space, but almost everything is the same. You do magic Caroline. Congratulations on your beautiful living area Alejandra 🩷
9-30-24 I really enjoyed watching the transformation of this space. It went from being segmented/lacking cohesion to being a much more peaceful, cohesive space. Before it looked like defined spaces competing with each other. This video is a good example of the impact furniture placement has in a room. Good job!🙂👍🤜🤛
I feel like you nailed it! Just from watching the video and getting an idea of her personality and seeing her Pinterest board I feel like you really delivered. So so cool 🎉👏
The little round table and ottoman is brilliant. The roundness continues the soft element of the pink imho. AND it's really practical to have small tables for the extra space AND you won't hurt your shin against a hard corner, which would happen late at night or when not awake properly, trying to shuffle around the couch. I had my doubts about the starburt and chandelier but the muted shades make the pink whimsical style appealing to a wider audience. ( Like me, who don't normally like that style!) This looks so good and looks really functional and comfortable. 😍
This is amazing! My fave part is that you were unabashedly free with the "coffee table" solution!! This is the weak link in many makeovers when the area isn't complete or too big. Your circles together with the tray is a simple, interesting, and effective means to make it work!! The Ceiling, dining area etc are wonderful too - I love the painted ceiling, and having just scored a new-to-me vintage chandy, I may steal some inspiration! U would love these vids more often (I know it's a lot of time) but work it!! $0!!!
HOLD UP! When you place the painters tape all down you _ALWAYS_ paint the new stripes with the base color 1st _than,_ you go in with your "fun" color on top of that. This way, any bleeding is going to be that original color, not the new one. Straight crisp lines, everytime! ❤❤❤
You are 100% correct. However we didn’t have white paint to match the ceiling!! Only working with what she had on hand. But for everyone else’s reference, YES this girl is correct!!👆👆👆
Okay, far be it from me to pretend to understand the intricacies of electrical work, but my electrician grandpa didn't get the nickname Sparky for nothing. Was the electricity to that light not turned off before the unwiring/rewiring happened? Gotta find that circuit breaker/fuse box. Love the video, be safe out there, Caroline!
aw i love "Sparky". the problem - Alejandra realized - is that a bulb had actually broken off IN the lamp, and when we turned the electricity back on and put a new bulb in, it attacked me with sparks and i flew off the ladder. wish the camera had been rolling
@@Caroline_Winkler - My husband was an electrician for 40+ years. Over 20 years ago, my husband and I started a business. It wasn’t just electrical, but covered cabinet-making, and other renovations. I worked with him for the first 5 years and one of our first jobs was renovating the large eat-in kitchen of some friends. One day, I was pulling out plugs to replace with new ones. I asked my husband if he had turned off the breaker for the eating area. He said that he had. I got zapped! It hurt for at least half an hour. I was fuming mad! I told my husband that if it ever happened again, I wouldn’t be helping with the electrical anymore. Thankfully, it never happened again! You and Alejandra were brave! ⚡️
In Australia electricians are all called sparkys. Also, Australia is extremely risk adverse and it's illegal to diy electrical work, which keeps all the sparkys in business 😄
Before was cute and nice but oh my that layout, how everything is placed the paint, all of it!! It just looks very cute and cozy and feels much more spacious. Love love love it
This is absolutely beautiful and cozy and perfect for having people visit. I can imagine living there myself. And! It is exactly what I need to do in my own space. Thank you thank you thank you both!
I am such a strict gray, black, white girl, (because I have no soul)…..but you guys nailed it. Gorgeous. You two are a magnificent team. Loved the video. ❤
Hello Caroline, you're always fun to watch. Let me just compliment you on that Frog and Toad shirt! I'm having a real happy moment being transported in time back to my daughter's early schooldays when we would devour the Frog and Toad stories together! Love your energy, thanks for being you.
What a fun project! Two artists collaborating to make a great space greater. Also some ideas it gave me for my furnitureless new apartment I'm gradually decorating: dining table doesn't need rug, 2 big rugs may be too much for smallish multipurpose room, living room rug can be cozy. Maybe design it all first THEN find where TV can go. Drawn/online floorplans can help but sometimes just moving stuff physically around is how to find best layout (one example shown here was discovering how daylight lands and feels). Ceiling color/design can make big difference. Painting cool items a new color can make big difference.
More of these $0 makeovers with subscribers, please! More more more!!! 🥳🥳🥳
on it!!!
Many more!!! 🎉❤ No buy, especially!!
Yess!!! These no-low budgets makeovers are so educational (and such a refreshing change). Keep. Them. Coming!!

And appreciated!
someone else commented about this show! i never saw it but it sounds so good. it's a shame they ended it :/
@@annefrazer6629 this inspired me to see if there are any episodes on TH-cam, and there are a few.
I miss that show!! ❤
I feel as though the ceiling almost makes the room feel bigger! I think the design added some dimension/height to the ceiling! Absolutely gorgeous
Love it too
This is my favourite design series!!
It's hard enough keeping the rug in the living room safe from kids and animals😊
u definitely dont!
I prefer it without a rug: more modern and elevated, in my opinion. But I guess it depends on the rest of the space.
I don't think that this is a no no in the interior design world, though. We also have a combined living room/dining room and two rugs would compete too much.
I always hear it is just a matter of personal preference to have a rug or not. Not a no-no in design by any stretch.
You and Alejandra make a great team!! The ceiling AND ceiling light are AWESOME!! You thought you couldn't improve her place, but YOU did!!
i love the spirit of this!
Finally, a home makeover with some color!! I LOVE IT and your energy combined!!!
Love the makeover, the ceiling and the pink chandelier is genius.
this is the first video of yours I have watched and I now need an entire series of this. loveeee the aspect of not buying things. we need that reminder that new doesn't = better
The makeover turned out so cute! Love the ceiling and the bench making it look like a built in breakfast nook.
Thank you!❤
I love these kind of videos! The one you did with your sister Julia is one of my favourites 🧡🌿
Caroline that make over was not just good it was amazing. Excellent job. Nerves obviously brings out the best in you. Great job. xx
I should be getting ready for work. I’m gonna watch this… priorities. 😅❤
i'll write you a doctor's note don't worry about it
Haha, same!
The end result is so cozy and freakin adorable I love it. A true sanctuary!
I would like to see a video on placing things in a bookcase. ❤️
This is AMAZING!!! The rearranging really opened up the space. I love the decor. Beautiful!!🤩👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🥰
Thank you as always Caroline!
Also: I don’t believe anyone has ever watched one of your videos and not subscribed.
Love Alejandra’s space.
Alejandra's decor is so beautiful and unique! I love how you kept along with that vision in the makeover
Fantastic redo! The furniture placement is perfect - that's exactly where I thought the couch should be so as to have a window view! Terrific!
Such a good makeover for a room that was already so darling!
Hi Caroline,
Your a breath of fresh air from other decorators I follow.
Blessings,
Rebekah
If your ever in Arlington come to the one block town of Westover on Washington Blvd.
Open, pulled together, cohesive and charming. Great job!
This room is beautiful! And Alejandra is a sweetheart!
This so whimsical and fun and festive and Caroline!!! Caroline never disappoints!!!!
So good. Thank you both for encouraging creativity instead of consumerism… this is the prescription I need right now.
Loved that you switched the living spaces, worked out perfectly IMO. And the touches of blush pink everywhere, *chefs kiss*! Great job ladies!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
this video was perfection. I agree her starting point was already really good but you guys somehow made it even better. the vibes are IMMACULATE
WoW, it looks like a totally different space, but almost everything is the same. You do magic Caroline. Congratulations on your beautiful living area Alejandra 🩷

I really enjoyed watching the transformation of this space.
So adorable!! I love how open it is now and the sofa is now longer squished in the corner. ❤
Excellent, out of your comfort zone and knocked it out of the park!!!!!
( Like me, who don't normally like that style!)
This looks so good and looks really functional and comfortable. 😍
Love love LOVE these types of videos! Keep them coming ❤
Although up on the ceiling, a little ‘bleeding’ is probably not noticeable.
@@gailwilliams5278 🤞
You are 100% correct. However we didn’t have white paint to match the ceiling!! Only working with what she had on hand. But for everyone else’s reference, YES this girl is correct!!👆👆👆
Honestly, for $0 it looks _amazing!_ Who needs to spend money on feature, for a style, that's not meant to ever _be_ 'perfect', right? 💕
We love Alejandra!! So fun seeing you two work on some of the projects together -- nicely done you hard working creatives!
@@Caroline_Winkler omg, no wonder you almost leapt off the ladder!
@@ohwilbur1 - Great idea! It helps keep people from accidentally electrocuting themselves!
Before was cute and nice but oh my that layout, how everything is placed the paint, all of it!! It just looks very cute and cozy and feels much more spacious. Love love love it
Yay! I love a no buy makeover! 🎉
love love love this! especially the genius ceiling + pink light fixture. bold & wonderful!
I’m loving the frig outta this series
This is absolutely beautiful and cozy and perfect for having people visit. I can imagine living there myself. And! It is exactly what I need to do in my own space. Thank you thank you thank you both!
Omg i absolutely love this! She‘s cute, she’s colorful and of course she’s bombas 😂
Wow! This is an amazing makeover. Its stunning and huge respect for how you took something already cute and took it to a whole new level.
Wow Caroline how did you know I only had $24 in my account right now
24 more than ur gonna need today
Brilliant. 💡🩵Losing the non- coordinating blue rug was BRILLIANT. That ceiling? Over the top! 😃Fantastic job!!
I love to see genuine Boho/Eclectic decor like the one in this apt. It is the most fun decor style.
This is going to be my favorite series 🥰
You make the world a better place by making these videos. Yes you do 🥰Even the sponsored part is a little piece of art. And fun!
I am such a strict gray, black, white girl, (because I have no soul)…..but you guys nailed it. Gorgeous. You two are a magnificent team. Loved the video. ❤
it can be a really great thing to have a client's taste stretch you! magical things happen
Loved how it turned out!!! You enhanced her style beautifully and the room feels bigger and is way more functional! Big thumbs up!!!
“Can’t do that. That’s arson…” 🤣🤣
I lost it at this! 😂
Hello Caroline, you're always fun to watch. Let me just compliment you on that Frog and Toad shirt! I'm having a real happy moment being transported in time back to my daughter's early schooldays when we would devour the Frog and Toad stories together! Love your energy, thanks for being you.
Bite the bullet…mount the TV! .
She should add sheer panels on sides of windows.
