    For those wondering why. Over the years, fluctuations of nitrates and other pollutants along the Sandusky River, as well as structural deficiencies of the Ballville Dam, led the City of Fremont to build an off-line up ground drinking water reservoir. No longer needed, the dam is blocking 22 miles of critical walleye and white bass spawning habitat.

      yee anyway the height is enough to keep a beatiful lakearound, and other one part of water will keep go away , the old dam dont keep all water, its not a dam its a safety dam, fuckin ecologist, now there is a 1 metter low river

    • @brucegotohell1323
      @brucegotohell1323 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@mandataruu8685 In the up river side of the dam, sitting slowly filled in the lake until the lake was very wide but only a few feet deep. The silting also reduced the ability of the dam to produce electricity. Dredging would have been impractical (or impossible) and much more expensive than removing the dam. Zebra mussels were also causing numerous problems including fouling the inflow of the turbines and fouling the turbines themselves. Blasting would have released the zebra mussels downstream in an uncontrolled manner and the debris itself would have created environmental problems. Even if they were to blast, the upstream water first had to be released in a controlled manner anyway and grinding is the usual method to do that. The methods used in the course of removing the dam are all standard ones for this type of dam. Actually, almost boringly common. The cost of the removal is a set price with a performance clause. Going too actually would result in penalties as the contract specifies certain deadlines. Again, boringly common.

    Video was great,but on another note their are ways of cleaning up the water behind the dam such as aeration, and fish ladders or tunnels for the fish would lesson the worries about drought . Americans are always there to tear something down instead of looking for ways to make the old better and save resources.

    The zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) is a small freshwater mussel. This species was originally native to the lakes of southern Russia and Ukraine.[2] However, the zebra mussel has been accidentally introduced to numerous other areas, and has become an invasive species in many countries worldwide. Since the 1980s, they have invaded the Great Lakes and the Hudson River.

    I remember fishing by the dam for catfish with Pa when I was a kid. He used to drive me down in the squad car. Barney used to come along but one summer pa and him we're having a fight. I said, Pa, why don't you just arrest him if you're mad at him? You're the sheriff, you can do that. He said, no, son, that would be what they call an abuse of power. I'll just shoot him instead. Mayberry was never the same after that.

      If they aren't going to use it any more it's better to restore the stream than leave the dam. That way they don't have to maintain the structure, it's better for wildlife, and it isn't trapping all the river sediment behind it.

      Why build a dam if you can't navigate up river without portaging the barges around. All dams should have locks for barges. Or you just live on a creek.

    That's probably the slowest way to remove a dam. Why not just put a jack hammer on the end?

      Because the grinder makes little bits that will wash away much easier than big bits the Jackhammer would make.

      Because you don’t want to completely wash away the nice village bellow with 25ft of water.

      Two reasons-a jackhammer would actually take longer. I guarantee this concrete is reinforced, meaning all a jackhammer would do is create a tangled web of concrete and rebar, which would then require a whole different operation. The grinder cuts precisely through everything.
      Second, a jack hammer weakens and damages the structure surrounding its impact. If youre trying for a precise removal of concrete, you always use grinders and saws.
