      Not really the best examples. Not much to break on a Viper to be honest and I wouldn't class the R8 V8 as a supercar at all. Slower than my old 997, not that impressive. Also, very, very heavy depreciation on R8s and not that "reliable" - do some research on leaking dampers.

      for example, if suddenly an offer of buying a private boening747 pops at 10 million dollars, it is VERY Cheap but it doesnt mean that maybe I can afford it.. but it still cheap
      With the mclaren is the same, it's a car as good as a 458 and it's almost half the price (but now you can see why)

    1. Mclaren offers an extended warranty. 4K for 2 years and renewable up to 12 years/unlimited mileage Saves any expense and everything is covered under warranty. 2. The battery going flat means you didn't have it on a trickle charger. 3. The AIS upgrade kit is actually cheaper than a new kit and includes a new screen. 4500 for the kit which has GPS and rear camera vs a plain ol screen. 4. If you need someone to work on it, talk to a tech that knows what they're doing, will save you tons than going through a dealer. 5. 15,000 miles on any exotic is a TON of miles.

    $3k for a battery is just horse shit.

    • @rombierto
      @rombierto 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lithium batteries are very pricey generally.

    • @TheAussieStig30
      @TheAussieStig30 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Robert Wolfe yeah but not $3k. I have 18 and 24v lithium drills and the most I've paid for a brand battery was about $250. Much smaller of course but not small enough to consider $3k to be priced fairly. Likewise my RC planes run lithium batteries and run about $60 for a 11v. The majority of the price would go towards Mclaren branding etc. But my point is that it is sold as a road car. 90% of these Mc's sold will be road driven and never see a track and like Rob said, the weight advantage isn't relevant. There is absolutely no reason to run a lithium battery. They could run an excellent dry battery and even with good margins for the dealer, sell them at $500. If I owned a Mc and was told I was looking at 3k, which would be closer to 6k here in Aus for a battery, id be trading the car on a 458. You expect to pay more for a supercar part, for instance if an exhaust header was 3k, well ok, it's an art piece, they don't break often, you'd wear it, but a consumable part like a battery that depending on how the car is driven might only last 24 months, $3k is a definite deal breaker.

    • @rombierto
      @rombierto 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheAussieStig30 A stock comparable lithium battery for my Exige is between $900 to $1500 USD while a AGM lightweight racing battery is about $200 to $300 USD. Depending upon Ah a lithium car battery for my Exige can range from $900 to about $2500 depending upon which company. McLaren uses lithium because it must remain on the cutting edge of material science no matter the cost.

    • @TheAussieStig30
      @TheAussieStig30 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Robert Wolfe definitely. I supplied batteries for 15 years and the most expensive I supplied was the same as what V8 Supercars use and from memory it sold for under $600 and was about the size of a motorbike battery and was extremely light. It went into either a F5000 race car or a V8 Commodore circuit car. It's fine for Mclaren race cars or purpose sold MP track cars to use the expensive batteries, but for a car that is sold as a road going car, buyers have the right to expect they can buy consumable parts without costing ridiculously disproportionate amounts of money. The other side of this is that there will be people out there who either get wrong information or won't pay the money will try to fit a normal battery and then damage the vehicle rendering it needing expensive proprietary software patches or flashing, which could lead to the car being sold and another person needing to spend big dollars to fix it.

      My father owns 2012 12c we have the car for 3 years he has put 20k miles on it so that means he drives it quite a lot. We haven't had any major issues once the wiper broke and it was covered by the warranty. So if you are planning to buy a 12C you must buy a classified car with a warranty. Also, it was surprising because we had to leave the country for 1 month and my dad made a stupid mistake he didn't plug the car in a trickle charger so we thought the battery was going to be dead, but everything was fine and the car started up on the first try. My father is so happy with the car and with McLaren as a brand now he is trying to find a 675LT but he is waiting for the perfect spec.

  • @XennialGuy
    @XennialGuy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Rob, sounds like the dealer took you (or the extended warranty company) to the cleaners and misdiagnosed while they were at it. Notchy steering on the 12C is commonly indicative of faulty Accumulators. These affect the handling and give it that smooth ride. When they go bad you get that notchy steering and/or somewhat rougher suspension ride, as if all three settings are a variant of race mode. The steering will feel like it gets stuck in spots at random. The new style accumulators are $2k installed for all for corners. These would have likely been replaced as part of the whole steering rack system which is why the problem was resolved. The $3k battery, I agree, is ridiculous. The other issue with the battery going dead and the window being stuck is easily resolved by jacking the front driver side, remove the wheel and wheel liner, and pull the trunk release cable. Putting the tender on for a couple hours would have then cracked the window, or replace the battery. But shattering the window was avoidable. But I agree, the car is full of gremlins, I've experienced nearly EVERY one of them. But despite this, it's never stranded me. My tip is to carry a bluetooth ODB-II to clear codes. I wouldn't use this car as a rental because when they decide to go into limp mode, the renter won't know what to do. Despite all this, it's still the best bang for the buck supercar. Huge step up from a GTR or R8, with the panache and performance of a Ferrari or Lambo, but a Porsche price tag. Honestly, what is as fast out there and looks this good for this kind of money? A car that is as fast as the 488 GTB at half the price and the doors of a billionaire.

      @Kristof Alexy Yes, it was NOT the F1 as that was NOT a production model car. No serial production. I agree with you. 12C's weren't well built. But, like Jaguar XK120's of the 50's, mechanics will get used to them and find ways of fixing them better. Again, I say that the 12C was the beginning of McLaren as a car company and surely the first model they built will rise in value at some point in the future.

      why does mclaren charge $35000? because they can

    • @ChucksSEADnDEAD
      @ChucksSEADnDEAD 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, every car manufacturer makes most of the money on parts, if you make millions of cars you have millions of potential customers. If you have less customers, you need to charge them more. Not just that, but since you're not producing millions of parts it literally drives up the unit price.
      And like the previous response said, they charge that much because they can. You really don't have an option, if you were driving a car worth 5k and the repair cost 5k you could make the decision to buy a 10k car for the same price. In this case you're stuck with a McLaren. And if you want to retain resale value you need a good service history so you got no option.

    • @thesolojourney8955

    I think that would be a fantastic idea! To see what repairs could be swapped over from other cars. I don't make a crap ton of money but I do get pretty substantial bonuses once a year. I was considering taking a bonus + incentive and going with a DB9, F430 or something along those lines (again, I don't have buckets of money lying around). So to hear someone say "you can use this part and it'll work" would be fun.

    I replaced a steering rack/pinion-gear on one of my cars myself over the weekend. It was heck!
    I stayed up late at night working on few issues with my car and finished around 3 am, which was 2 hours before I had to get up for work. The steering rack that I got cheap had came with some weird gaskets that don't even fit anywhere so I just used the old gaskets if I could. I am sure I skipped at least a few of the line gaskets. And now today, 2 years later, any steering fluid that goes in will just leak out the next few days. So I just drive it without the power steering and it really got me to learn more about my car and the handling around corners. You can feel the car more, feel the road more, feel the tires more. Edit: But now I get some uncomfortable feeling in my left ribs when I take right turns, so I gotta technique the turns.

    • @AndrewSmall963
      @AndrewSmall963 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Joe11Blue Nope, buy an old NSX. There's a reason old 911s, 355s, etc. are sought after; owners have half a chance of keeping them roadworthy. In another decade, if this McLaren is any indicator, all these modern hybrid super cars will be static art works. Some people will disagree with me, citing examples of alternative ECUs where old hardware is emulated by modern hardware. At which point having the original ECU will suddenly become as important to the resale as matching chassis and engine numbers.

Maybe it's boring that my Porsche 911 is a base model but so far, nothing has gone wrong, scheduled services are not too ridiculous once the warranty ends, there are non-dealership shops that specialize in the brand.
