Just like Range Rovers. Huge hunks of junk, break all the time. But people keep buying them because of the prestige. The company has no incentive to make them reliable. People that buy McClarens buy them because they want to be unique and not have the same Ferrari/Lambo that everyone else has. They may be more tolerant of issues.
I’m truly baffled at the amount of morons that buy Range Rovers. A mechanic shop that’s right near my office specializes in British cars and there are never less than 5 Land Rovers (majority are Range Rovers) there getting lengthy repairs. There are Minis and Jags regularly too, but he has to make at least 80% of his profits off of the Land Rover brand. I will walk over there occasionally when a Bentley appears there for service.

They stay in business because of a warranty. Just like most luxury brands. Could 'prestige' or other things be a part of it? Sure, but its typically not the main concern. That means that, in 3-5 years they might rack up 1K-4K miles, do 0 maint on it, and replace it as soon as its out of warranty, rinse and repeat. So reliability isn't a concern, so if you just want your best bang for the buck high performance car, or maybe you just want your favorite car, whatever it is, you buy it. McLarens suffer from even worse dealer price inflation for service than Ferrari/Lamborghini. And a lot of them don't seem interested in fixing things that could be easily repaired-they just want to replace an entire assembly at an exorbitant cost. There's been plenty of people that have figured out that if they find a good shop or even work on the cars themselves the repair costs can be plenty reasonable. There's also been evidence to suggest that McLaren has at least been taking customer complaints to heart and working on build quality.
I believe the best Mclaren will be Tavarish's. It has already been crashed beyond repair, repaired beyond the wildest expectations, lost all of its value, and will just be an extremely fun and relatively cheap sports car.

I don't expect Toyota levels of reliability/durability, but when you can't just get in the car and drive on any nice weather day, its a turd IMO.
