Hey Ken I think this series is a great idea. I know your still developing this new thread, but for me personally, I'd love to see a little more technical info and demonstrateing on how they achieve their tone so those of us who want to take things away from them can. Anyway love it.
Always brings a smile to my face when I hear Ozzy. Especially fairies with boots on (I'm sming as I wright that). One thing that sticks to my mind is a friend once said to me he always claps his hands out of time. I'm not sure if its places a bias in my psyche but that's what I see when ever he's performing. Just a personal note. I'm a big fan of yours Mr Templin. Your singing course has helped my singing no end and I find your post always inspirational. Especially the one about what makes Ken Tamplin Ken Tamplin. Keep smiling.
Hey Ken! I'm not suggesting a guy for this series of videos. But there is this guy called Ed Motta, a brazilian complete jazz musician/singer that you should take a look and maybe someday (if you think its relevant) do a vocal analysis of him. I'd love to see you talking about him. Specially because he sings a lot of "i"s and "u"s. Anyway, thanks for all your work man, cheers from Curitiba, Brasil.
A buddy of mine rented a house from Brad Gillis in California about a decade ago. He told me he's a nice guy along as well as being a talented musician. But most people don't pick up on the subtleties that Ozzy's voice has thrown in there. It's easy to think he's not "doing much", but he's really talented with going to that "edge" without actually going completely over to the point of his voice cracking. One thing is having me wonder: where's Ozzy's preamp EQ's set at and I think I hear a touch of flange or chorus effect along with a really "close" delay and reverb effect. I was wondering: does he have a delay set to repeat by milliseconds after the initial attack? Basically: is it delay (with a fast setting) that gives him that "full" or almost-doubled sound to his voice, or maybe it's compression and I'm way off?.. I know effects and eq's don't add to your sound but actually only embezzle the quality of your voice (I've heard that one many times over the years). I'm mostly a guitar guy and I know very little in adding effects to vocals and possibly vocal effects and eq settings would make an interesting video for a future topic (if you haven't covered that already). Anyway, all I know really about vocals and how they're recorded is a lot of vocal tracks are overly saturated with reverb and delay and you usually can't tell until the vocal tracks are completely isolated from all the rest of the instruments. I'm giving "lead vocalist" a go and instead of just the standard of offering a band a pa system with me on the job, I'm offering my services for any band mates in need of a decent guitar/bass tech or any other luthier services needed.... Now only if I could only get better with my singing and keep on practicing, MAYBE I might land a gig. But if you got pointers for someone with a low voice to sing in a higher registry (only so bands won't need to de-tune for me), I'm all ears for your advice AND if you got tips for sweetening the sound with eq or effects, I'm game too. Sorry about the long read.
Long post lol also I'm not a pro or anything, but I think he uses harmonic singing style cause I've heard acapellas and you still hear the double notes in his voice. It's kinda remarkable to be honest cause he's an average singer, but his tone makes up for it. The studio recordings do have reverb and other effects though, but if you go back to his early performances you definitely hear the harmonics in his voice.

I think that alot of people characterize Ozzy as a poor singer because of his many poor live performances that are available on the net. However, if you have ever tried singing one of his songs, particularly Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, you will know how incredibly difficult it can be. The fact that many of his vocals on the first album were completed in one day and one take is amazing. Despite having a less-than-stellar technique, he manages to hit many notes high in the tenor range (like high A's, B's and even a high E on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath).
I am pretty sure you're correct Ken. Bob Daisleywrote the lyrics to Crazy Train. That is indeed Rudy Sarzo on bass too. At this point Ozzy had some very off days with his voice. I remember seeing a video of the Randy Rhoads line up and he shakes his head in anger at one point where his voice is cracking on the chorus.
I saw Ozzy Live a couple of years ago, 2018 before COVID and even back then, and I think he was late 60's or even early 70's and although he didn't walk back and forth much, he just stood there, I guess that was after all his med's were prescribed calming him down, but he was still great at that point. It was a festival in Texas, and Stone Sour, was with him. Zakk Wylde played for him, was with him for the No More Tours 2 tour and it was great. He still hit all those high notes, there wasn't much he didn't do. It was such a great show. Only thing is I'm not a fan of Zak's kilt.
If I could sing I would do a cover of this song disguised as the girl from the RING movie. I just see a connection between the two especially his manner on stage in this one

I know you guys in USA don't give credit to Manowar, but mr Tamplin, they have a monster singer. At 65.... Still kicking butt. By the way Tom Jones would be nice too
The name you were looking for is Bob Daisley not Daily. Also there is four instrumentalists in the clip of Crazy Train. You missed Don Airey on keyboards. You can see him to the left when they pan across Tommy Aldridge on the upper level.
Steel Panther may not be your cup of tea, but they do a skit in which they wheel the lead singer out to do a spot on imitation of Ozzy singing Crazy Train.
Singing Ozzy much more coherent. A great vocal I really liked was John Farnham. I almost got to a concert back in the 80's. But when I watch it after wards blew me away. Hits the highs really well really liked the humor showed me how confident he was.

The fact that many of his vocals on the first album were completed in one day and one take is amazing. Despite having a less-than-stellar technique, he manages to hit many notes high in the tenor range (like high A's, B's and even a high E on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath).
Thanks for weighing in, The Blackstone Project!
Love Ozzy. From Blizzard to No more tears. Do one about these slingers. Can't separate them. Christine MC Vie.,Lindsey Buckinham and Stevie Nicks
Thanks for the suggestion, Filip!
Ozzy is the best. And a big teddy bear. Meet him one time. Love his accent.
Cool, Lisa!
👍
a couple of suggestions: Dave Grohl, Chester Bennington, Eddie Vedder, Anthony Kiedis, and Hayley Williams
Thanks for the great suggestions, Daniel!
Hes the Prince of Darkness. You cant understand him speak but when he gets up on stage he mesmerizes you.

😊
Spooky and awsome. He really brings the hard core. Love him.
Lisa Lindsey 👍
Really enjoy watching you Ken...Thank you...hope you can do on Myles Kennedy too..
Thanks, Nicky!
Ville Valo please. Amazing vocal range. And his voice is so great.

So do I.
I like all you choose. Love music like me. Cool.
Cool, Lisa!
I''d like to see another Ozzy video, but more importantly with more of a breakdown of the actual techniques he/they are using while singing.
Thanks for weighing in.
Ozzy sounds the exact same live if not better.
Would love to see a video about Mama I'm Coming Home.
Good suggestion!
If I could sing I would do a cover of this song disguised as the girl from the RING movie. I just see a connection between the two especially his manner on stage in this one
💜😀
i really liked this video, please make more of this kind of videos , this could help us to realize what make singers unique so we could use their way of uniqueness.
and please please please do it for lead singers of top bands like curt cobain nirvana, john lenon , and ...
thanks for your very very very very very very very good channel
😀
I think of tattoos when I think of Ozzy like the one on his knuckles.

Awesome!
Hi Ken.. not sure if this singer is in your wheelhouse but I would love to see Dave Gahan on 'what makes this singer great'. Love your chanel !!! You are so respectful in you opinions and a very knowledgeable vocalist... Keep up the great work !!
Thanks for the suggestion, Jen!
I know you guys in USA don't give credit to Manowar, but mr Tamplin, they have a monster singer. At 65.... Still kicking butt. By the way Tom Jones would be nice too
Thank for the suggestions, Filipe!
I was thinking no way he forgot Randy.. Then a minute later you redeemed yourself.
3Runner95 👍
The name you were looking for is Bob Daisley not Daily. Also there is four instrumentalists in the clip of Crazy Train. You missed Don Airey on keyboards. You can see him to the left when they pan across Tommy Aldridge on the upper level.
Thanks for the correction, Jeff!
Steel Panther may not be your cup of tea, but they do a skit in which they wheel the lead singer out to do a spot on imitation of Ozzy singing Crazy Train.
I'll check that tout, tmlashomb!
Oh, and the guitar player does a great rendition of Randy Rhodes' work on the song, too.
Singing Ozzy much more coherent. A great vocal I really liked was John Farnham. I almost got to a concert back in the 80's. But when I watch it after wards blew me away. Hits the highs really well really liked the humor showed me how confident he was.
😀
Haha gotta love Ozz!!
🦇
i love your videos like this!! i actually have really grown to like ozzy’s new album. if you get the chance, i think you should look at the songs under the graveyard and scary little green men! again, awesome vid!!
