I know everyone is saying the new one sounds better and that's cool, but in the context of 2001 the choices they made with that fuzz in the outro gave them an other worldly quality that was so strange at the time. It was so unique. The new one to me sounds sonically much more impressive but it sounds like what everyone else is doing. Glad to hear these old tunes again with a fresh take though.
Yup, gained clarity, but missing all the atmosphere. The new mix is far too clinical and sounds sparse compared to the original.
The biggest difference is the drums, for me. They just get buried in the original mix and lack any kind of punch. They're definitely a lot more impactful on the remix.
Not just the drums. The mix is better in how they captured the natural tones/frequencies of each acoustic instrument so much better, rather than sacrifice them to the mix. Likely less compression as well?
The “air guitar solo” was kinda... satisfying haha
I’m waiting for futurism at this point, that’s gonna be a banger for sure 🤯

The guitar solo at the end sounds 10x better in the new mix imo
If I'm not mistaken, strings were recorded for the whole song during the original sessions but ended up on the cutting room floor. This new version brought them back at least for the final part. I love it! Too bad Matt's vocals on that part are almost gone, though.
So good, pls do this for all the tracks they remaster

They fixed the kick.
From what I read, this remix is by Rich Costey. He has been with Muse since Absolution for most albums, but that was after this one. He said on Twitter they didn't record anything new, so everything on this remix was already there, but just mixed differently or even cut out of the mix in some cases.
I think there are a few things which are different takes, like the guitar, especially in the clean sections because the notes don’t match at one point. The strings are brand new and were recorded at Abbey Road. Space Dementia and Megalomania will be receiving strings and Micro Cuts will get harpsichord apparently
@@jacc4928 Rich Costey has confirmed that nothing has been rerecorded for this new mix. Strings were recorded back in 2001 but dropped in the final mix.

Absolutely nailed this, I loved the remix personally as like you I heard major overhauls in the general quality and channel usage, but you've pulled apart my favourite song in the best way
OoS has always been my favorite rock album and i've listened to it so much but i always wished for a remastered version, for the songs to feel fuller and wider. now having a whole remix is so much better than my wish, it elevated the song so much and i'm so hyped to hear the rest. i'm afraid i'll be very attached to the new remixes cuz i've been listening to this new Citizen Erased like it's a brand new song, i've fallen in love all over again with it

Awesome breakdown of the beautiful mastering. Given the nature of origin of symmetry and it's tone I was blown away by the volume/space of the new mix. There where many points in the new master that I noticed something different but couldn't put my finger on it, you very quickly and elegantly worded everything I've noticed and more! Please do the whole album in this way! Really awesome job!
Very interesting comparison. To be honest, I love most of the songs of Origin of symmetry but I am not that big fan of the "raw" sound. For this reason, I consider the new mixing sounds wayyyy better (my two pence). As you noticed, lots of melodic parts come to the front and make the all lot more "modern" (VS the raw or low fi in the original songs). Thanks again Mendel

Holy shit dude I was so excited for Space Dementia and Micro Cuts, I forgot about Megalomania.
If I have any criticism for OoS, it would be that Megalomania felt like a flat end. I'm super excited now to see how Muse remix that song

Good analysis! Agree about much of it, those stereo panned falsetto with the centered normal voice is killer. Also like the lowered synth in the main song. Finally, SO much in the old version sounds over-compressed.
But that phase-y thing at the end is so Muse. The way it's there throughout and especially after every other instrument ends is part of what made them who they are during that time. The weird guitar-y noise stuff. Take that away and you lose that wild experiment-y young Matt energy. Also without the phase-y stuff, how you gonna start microcuts?
I also prefer the "telephone" guitar. Sometimes, lo-fi is more :D

idk about you guys, but i want the remastered version of BH&R... it has most of their best work.. but almost all of the songs are compressed/distorted to hell.

@@Tocaraca Why? There is nothing to improve in that song. The mix is great. All the instruments are clear and properly mixed.
I think there isn't much room for improvement there, it's a great sounding record.

I do miss the phasing sound a little, for the outro. For some reason it gives me most of the emotion. I love the way it rises and rises in pitch. It just fizzles out anticlimactically in the remix. The strings and piano sound far far better in the outro though, which I love.
I also think the old one everything is too distorted (as the whole album) and with less details, it might be a musical choice but i prefer the new one
Wow I would never expect any remix would be better than original one, but this remix is soo good. My only dislike is the fadeout synths of the old one is actually beginning of the Micro Cuts, so there was a transition between two songs, new one does not have that, but thats just the personal preference.

The original uses the synth to flow flawlessly into micro cuts, with the new ending I think they will eliminate that
Yeah, was great for the flow of the original album, but that synth butchered the end of the track for me. I am happy they took it out so we can hear Matt
Was never a muse guy. Great song and a great comparison of modern mixing vs a more traditional style. What other older song would you want to get this treatment?

@@Mendelian For me I'm most interested in Darkshines, that song could sound massive with the piano slams and arpeggios
@@Mendelian They've announced that New Born, Bliss and Plug In Baby had the least amount of change compared to the rest of the album. Other songs like Citizen Erased, Megalomania and Space Dementia have new strings while Micro Cuts has a harpsichord. Likely New Born just sounds more dynamic

Great comparison. Once I heard the new mix I knew I'd never go back - sorry old citizen :(
Having more clarity, more stereo, being able to recognize more sounds is good.
But to me, they panned some things too far ("I wish you'd hold your stage), made some sounds too clear (drums are so much more powerless now, overall and there lacks the nice little saturation on some sounds, again like the hold your stage line ).
In short, they remixed wanting to do better instead of gooder (makes no sens but illustrates the idea). Most of it is soooo much better, but some feelings for away and it's more important to me.
tbf of course the new one would sound better because it shows how much Muse have changed, it would have been very disappointing if a remix of a sophmore album somehow sounded worse, when we know how much better they are at producing and mixing.
Only thing i am annoyed is that they removed the fuzzy bass, i really enjoyed that part.
The low-fi ness of the original and its just sheer talent outburst and creativity is why the old one has been on my favourite for like a decade maybe, but i agree they have made it sound better now

New is better. Listening to it on my hd650 headphones and HS8 studio monitors. There’s no comparison
Go to your car... and if you have an average audio like me, these old songs from Muse will simply break.
Then take the songs from Billie Elish, that have an amazing quality... you can turn on the audio to maximun, and it wont break anything.
Then now try with this remix... and you see how high the quality is.
Basically, it looks like your car has a bad audio, when in reality... its Citizen Erased that have a bad mix (or outdated, bad quality).
The car is just my irl example lol, can try it on any audio device you have.
And about the guitar solo in the quiet part... I like the old one more, I think, I think it fits more. But maybe thats my brain that is not accepting the change. You also barely hear the guitar during the calm chorus, because it is blending in with everything else, while the old one is more present. But at the same time, the guitar at the end, after the chorus, I like the new one more, because it looks like the old one, but with better quality, and not a different sound.
And even though I like the ending more on the new one, I can barely hear Matts voice before the starts the lyrics
And I saw Matt talking about this recently, so I think Muse was involved in this remix, its their project too, and not someone that remixed it. This is the vision Muse have for the song, this is what they think as a 2.0 version :D

I think the new mix is better but I like the old mix more
Same...I mean, I love the new version and I think it fixes some of the mixing issues on the original but that sound was just...them at that moment in time. This one is almost too refined 😅. When I think of the OOS era, I think of raw, Hullabaloo like crazyness, mushroom eating, stage smashing, red spikey hair and marker drawn veins😂. And the original mix just reflects that imo. I'm still going to listen to the new versions to death though😅.

I see people mentioning in other places that Jeff Buckley has a guitar part in this and I’m not sure what they’re referring to. Since when and how?

Yeah I checked he was already dead. I think those people assumere that the different sounding clean Guitar parte was a different track played with Buckley's Guitar that Matt bought last year but They said that the recording don't have any rerecorded part so idk

Worse imo. It’s still cool but the original hits the sweet spot with the distortion. The new version unnecessarily dirties it. Plus Matt’s haunting vocals, especially towards the final melodic breakdown just before the line “wash me away” where Matt uses his voice as an instrument

I think the new mixes sound less realistic, it feels less dynamic and with less low end. I like old mixes better tbh, they might be less loud but better quality
both versions are good, the whole album is, but the remix is punchier, muse remixed it themselves to answer your question
Producer realises Matt Bellamy is not only a genius musician, he's also a better producer than the original producer.
Well not really because the production is still entirely the same, it's just the mixing that's new
Muse have at least co-produced their albums from day 1, including Origin, and mixing is an entirely separate thing often done by a completely different person.
The two albums entirely produced by Matt/Muse are often considered among their worst.
