Yea Gen 6 PU Monferno was a pretty massive threat. Both Fire- and Fighting- were good offensively, and there was a severe lack of both of those in the tier. Also could run bulky thanks to Slack Off and high BP moves still doing decent damage, decent support movepool too. Good job.

It has a good mix of bulk, power and speed that while not amazing on any of these areas, everything comes together as a mega who can fit in almost every kind of team, while Aerodactyl needs protection against rocks, Sharpedo and Houndoom were not good outside offense, Aggron was not good on offense, Manectric is more for volturn cores and the rest are just too niche.

Rainpooper The thing with giving bad pokemon megas was that op megas existing meant that using a bad mega meant giving up on the busted ones, so they opportunity cost meant they still couldn’t keep up.
@@Shr00ms_AWD (at least in national dex formats) Whether using a physical or special Altaria, the only consistent move among the different sets is Cotton Guard. In the time that the format has existed I've never seen a mega Altaria open with anything else.
One thing I love about Altaria is how it leaned more into Defensive play with it's stats. Dragon does resist several types, so it makes sense to try and capitalize on that. It didn't really pan out in the long run, but I still think it's unique.

Was nice for both support and offense, and tended to last a while with its bulk. I also used it in non-mega form in one round to completely shut down a rain team, and then mega'd later once I'd taken the advantage. I might have also been running Ditto at that tournament, but I honestly don't remember. The team was *really* unconventional.

I can still remember the day I caught a swablu. I was only 7, and I was playing ORAS. My 10 year old brother told me I needed a Pokémon for “fly” and I loaded up my save. I was in Fallarbor town. At first, I wanted to catch Skarmory, but then I went to the route before meteor falls, then set my eyes on swablu. I caught it, and it was a female. I named her fluff, and then when I was up against Winona’s swellow, she evolved into Altaria. I can still remember demolishing Winona’s altaria with my own’s dragon breath. And since then, Altaria has remained one of my favorite Pokémon to date. I hope you liked my flashback.
That story reminds me how Hawlucha becomes my favourite fighting type in XY. For some reason I don't remember well enough, I doesn't capture one until the postgame, when I realized He was the best acrobatics user of all, and a lot better than my Drifblim. Even before starting to breed my team, I was playing in 6v6 a lot, and had a Hawlucha for some of the battles, because i didn't had something better. I was under the table in one of those random battles, 2 versus 5, but then my Hawlucha with a combination of Acrobatics, Sky attack and High Jump Kick was able to sweep and save me, because my delphox wasn't fast enough to Sweep. Then she becomes my first perfect monster (was a female) and I liked that Hawlucha even more, despite failing me some H. Jump Kicks and being a tomboy. Then SM were released and my Hawlucha wasn't forced to use a move to loss her item anymore, becoming a fierce pokemon in the regular 6vs6 thanks to (and despite of) the Tapus. Nowadays the Mexican girl is a key component in my rain team because of his sweeping habilities alongside Tapu Koko (Also known as 'the chicken's siblings' synergy).
Ubers, possibly suspect banned for Anything Goes. It's pre-evolution was quickbanned to AG as well. (I'm totally definitely not biased towards gen 3 having most of my favorite pokemon, nosiree.)

Altaria was always my baby. I adored my Golden Mega Fairy Altaria: Draco Meteor + Giga Impact + Earthquake/Roost + Dragon Dance in USUM...Good times. Need to get a gen 3 game so I can put it through Contests.
I'm surprised there was no mention of Cotton Guard. In my experience, Altaria tends to be a physically defensive nightmare if it runs that. Hell, I ran it on my offensive mega set for a while because everything kept trying to Ice Punch and Gunk Shot me on a swap or revenge. Just getting one CG off meant I wasn't threatened by half my usual checks anymore.
Nothing, but FSG makes mistakes and this is one of them. Maltaria was one of the best mons in uu, possibly even the best and it was suspect tested. It was even seen in ou on couple occasions, but it was pretty mediocre
that was after scizor was suspected & mimikyu dropped into UU after that , the M Alt suspect was planned to follow scizor in case scizor got banned but it's reliance on magnezone/screens meant that while extremely strong it required extensive support, & M-Alt checks other stuff as well maintaining balance between things like latias/scizor/itself, it's definitely one of the strongest mons in the tier though
@@geometrydashtzolkin1025 Well, there was 5 best mon in UU. First place was Scizor, 5th place was Terrakion and in second to forth place were the UU dragon trio of Hydreigon, Latias and Altaria. Altaria was the best setup sweeper of UU and a solid support as well or even a special tank to lure steel types.

You can evolve swablu real fast and altaria feels kind of powerful and then it gets its mega evolution and it's all over. I think I used it more than mega blaziken. Altaria was the Pokemon I was looking forward to catching most when I started Sapphire nearly 20 years ago. I remember this Pokemon website called Pokemasters that leaked the new Pokemon and I fell in love with Swablu/Altaria, Mightyena, Walrein, Grumpig, and Milotic. I couldn't catch a Feebas until post-game but the other three I caught immediately once I got to their routes and became my MVPs on my first Gen 3 run. It'll always have a special place in my heart.
I feel like you understated how dominant Malt was in UU despite its flaws. Like right now it is at S tier, and was very recently put up to the banhammer(with scizor).
I remember fighting this thing for the first time against Winonna, man she kicked my ass a lot, but my Blaziken got her with a blaze kick attack ftw but almost lost it
The best thing I remember about Altaria is its name starting with an A, so when you search for (PU) (ZU, below PU, worst tier ever), it will be th first pick
4 MSS. Basically Altaria does not have enough room for the moves it could desire, specially since Roost is a must, as well as a "STAB" leaving you for only 2 moves between boosting moves, coverage and utility ones.
@@N12015 since my gen. 3 days my golden rule with using an Altaria is that it always has to know either safeguard or mist, the other moves come after that but one is mandatory, but thats just me.
A fact that aren't mentioned on Gen 6: Altaria-Mega takes the most fastest ban on smogon history. Context: Mega Altaria was released on ORAS, not XY. Because of base altaria on PU and Altarianite being released as a item, they allowed Mega-Altaria on PU. Result? In a few hours , Altarianite, along with Loppunite and Beedrilite, was BANNED from PU. After 9 days, Pidgeot-Mega grow up, and then Mega Glalie was banned on December. But, Mega Camerupt aren't banned from PU. He go to NU by himself, by it's usage only.
You can also run defensive Cotten guard mega altaria and completely wall opposing physical attackers. You could run cotton guard, dragon dance, return, and another physical move for coverage.
every once in a while i come back to this and rewatch the first part of the gen 6 portion; altaria is my favorite pokemon and seeing that there was a time when it was so good it was nearly OU banworthy makes me happy i really wish it could keep that unique dragon/fairy typing on its base form, that alone would help it a lot
I used Altaria for the new bdsp games for Cynthia. I used a thick fat, belly drum, Snorlax for sweeping the rest of her team but it couldn’t take on her Garchomp. So what I did was give her the berry for minimizing dragon damage, set up a cotton guard and then set up perish song and set up another cotton guard. I healed and then set off Draco meteor. It took down Garchomp before the perish song but perish song was only for insurance anyway and was going to switch out Altaria if that hadn’t worked to save it. So with that, that’s how I used only two Pokémon to take down Cynthia. I’m not big on competitive but I thought long and hard on this combination and I’m so glad it worked.
Ah, Altaria, I remember training one in Gen 4 to counter Cynthia's Garchomp. That wasn't my brightest idea... She did help against her other Pokemons though, so everything went alright.
Had they not Added a Mega, She alongwith Mawile and Absol was the perfect candidate for a much needed Evolution. I want my Mega Haxorus. in Scarlet and Violet.

The gen 7 section is really underrating it, it's one of the best mons in UU.
Probably 2nd best currently after Scizor. Hydreigon and Latias have also been strong contenders for best non-Scizor mon in the tier.

I always appreciated how realistic the Mega forms "clouds" were. They were legit the height of the 3DS' graphical ability.

Ubers, possibly suspect banned for Anything Goes. It's pre-evolution was quickbanned to AG as well. (I'm totally definitely not biased towards gen 3 having most of my favorite pokemon, nosiree.)

I'm surprised there was no mention of Cotton Guard. In my experience, Altaria tends to be a physically defensive nightmare if it runs that. Hell, I ran it on my offensive mega set for a while because everything kept trying to Ice Punch and Gunk Shot me on a swap or revenge. Just getting one CG off meant I wasn't threatened by half my usual checks anymore.

Nothing, but FSG makes mistakes and this is one of them. Maltaria was one of the best mons in uu, possibly even the best and it was suspect tested. It was even seen in ou on couple occasions, but it was pretty mediocre
that was after scizor was suspected & mimikyu dropped into UU after that , the M Alt suspect was planned to follow scizor in case scizor got banned but it's reliance on magnezone/screens meant that while extremely strong it required extensive support, & M-Alt checks other stuff as well maintaining balance between things like latias/scizor/itself, it's definitely one of the strongest mons in the tier though
@@geometrydashtzolkin1025 Well, there was 5 best mon in UU. First place was Scizor, 5th place was Terrakion and in second to forth place were the UU dragon trio of Hydreigon, Latias and Altaria. Altaria was the best setup sweeper of UU and a solid support as well or even a special tank to lure steel types.

You can evolve swablu real fast and altaria feels kind of powerful and then it gets its mega evolution and it's all over. I think I used it more than mega blaziken. Also, might check out your stream since I'll be looking for someone's coverage of the game.
Altaria was the Pokemon I was looking forward to catching most when I started Sapphire nearly 20 years ago. I remember this Pokemon website called Pokemasters that leaked the new Pokemon and I fell in love with Swablu/Altaria, Mightyena, Walrein, Grumpig, and Milotic. I couldn't catch a Feebas until post-game but the other three I caught immediately once I got to their routes and became my MVPs on my first Gen 3 run. It'll always have a special place in my heart.

I feel like you understated how dominant Malt was in UU despite its flaws. Like right now it is at S tier, and was very recently put up to the banhammer(with scizor).

4 MSS. Basically Altaria does not have enough room for the moves it could desire, specially since Roost is a must, as well as a "STAB" leaving you for only 2 moves between boosting moves, coverage and utility ones.
@@N12015 since my gen. 3 days my golden rule with using an Altaria is that it always has to know either safeguard or mist, the other moves come after that but one is mandatory, but thats just me.
A fact that aren't mentioned on Gen 6: Altaria-Mega takes the most fastest ban on smogon history. Context: Mega Altaria was released on ORAS, not XY. Because of base altaria on PU and Altarianite being released as a item, they allowed Mega-Altaria on PU. Result? In a few hours , Altarianite, along with Loppunite and Beedrilite, was BANNED from PU. After 9 days, Pidgeot-Mega grow up, and then Mega Glalie was banned on December. But, Mega Camerupt aren't banned from PU. He go to NU by himself, by it's usage only.

You can also run defensive Cotten guard mega altaria and completely wall opposing physical attackers. You could run cotton guard, dragon dance, return, and another physical move for coverage.
Shame it debuted along with Salamence and Flygon. A solid pokemon with an awesome design.
every once in a while i come back to this and rewatch the first part of the gen 6 portion; altaria is my favorite pokemon and seeing that there was a time when it was so good it was nearly OU banworthy makes me happy
i really wish it could keep that unique dragon/fairy typing on its base form, that alone would help it a lot

I used Altaria for the new bdsp games for Cynthia. I used a thick fat, belly drum, Snorlax for sweeping the rest of her team but it couldn’t take on her Garchomp. So what I did was give her the berry for minimizing dragon damage, set up a cotton guard and then set up perish song and set up another cotton guard. I healed and then set off Draco meteor. It took down Garchomp before the perish song but perish song was only for insurance anyway and was going to switch out Altaria if that hadn’t worked to save it. So with that, that’s how I used only two Pokémon to take down Cynthia. I’m not big on competitive but I thought long and hard on this combination and I’m so glad it worked.
I'm glad Altaria at least got better in Gen 6. Even if it didn't stay in the spotlight forever, I'm glad it had some spotlight nonetheless.
