I think what really plays a factor alongside age is that the NBA takes a while to get used to for most rookies. Not just shooting but also number of games which often leads to injuries. More injuries delay rookies from learning from the NBA mins. With older player taking longer to get better, it just means getting injuries as a 24-25 year old is more punishing than for a 19-20 year old. You forgot Tim Duncan. And back then the NBA was drafting more sophomore college player. Drafting younger and younger is making the NBA a professional AAU.
The reason Duarte worked for the Pacers to start and then didn’t has very little to do with his age. He was doing his best Michael Porter Jr impersonation and it rubbed basically the entire team the wrong way. We were a bad team in 2022 but dude on multiple occasions before being put on IR with a “undisclosed toe injury@ caught the ball in a spot where he was absolutely wide open then dribbled to the spot he preferred and shot a then contested shot.

Dalton isn't 22 though. He's 23 and he'll be 24 by the time the season ends. To put that into perspective. Wemby will be 24 yrs old by the time the 2028 Olympics rolls around. That's why teams passed on Knecht because what you're seeing from him now is pretty much it, whilst other rookies are over half a decade away from even sniffing their prime years
The problem is smaple size if you have 100 18 year olds theres enough varience to eliminate the really bad players. If theres only 8 guys then one to three bad players have a huge impact. Also you could assume that these get less time given to them as they are older and are assumed to be less valuable to their respective teams
Makes sense, you can cut a young rookie some slack and wait for him to improve, but a guy in his mid 20s should start pulling his own weight. Old rookie must earn his spot fast or he is done. Lakers are desperate for a shooter so I think they are a perfect place for Knecht, they will give him a better chance than other teams would have.
The reason they passed on him isn't tough to see. Just look at Jaime Jaquez second year in the NBA. These 23 years old guys have gone through all the physical and skill development possible. The chances of Knecht having a better second season than his rookie year are low. He is at best Duncan Robinson, at worst Max Strus. Those are fine NBA players, but he's not saving the Lakers
Dalton was the most ready out of this draft class due to his age. Everybody was looking for a project. Dalton is an almost finished product. Lakers will trade him in the future when Lebron retire.
Eh, things don't work like you think they do. Lebron probably politicedto draft this guy and it's gonna be a bust. He's proven to have no basketball iq
At 23/24, most players have hit their ceiling and the problem is they did it against lower level players in the NCAA or other leagues that aren't the NBA. The younger guys who are still developing can do it against the highest level of competition and they are able to craft their game to match the NBA style game not the NCAA or lower level league style game. It's not like you see a lot of games in the NBA that end in 65 to 59 points scores like in the NCAA.
Its pretty clear why. Upside and growth trumps all other factors in the minds of most scouts and front offices. Its more optimal to bet big in the hopes of winning big long term, than play it safe and have a lower chance of winning big long term. Did these teams "miss"? We wont know until years from now. Dalton Knecht could end up being a bona fide bench rider long term due to limited upside. Or he could turn into an all star. But the chances of the latter are less likely for someone like him which is the calculation that was made by front offices and scouts.
he can be a good role player. i think the reason why spurs pass him at 7 is because of defensive weakness. spurs is weak in defense without wemby, knecht will make it worst.
He was drafted about where he should have been. He’s a complementary player who needs to play off better players. He’s not creating this for himself. That says non lottery pick to me.
He is a good player, but he has been able to perform at this level because the Lakers have given him a great opportunity to play a big role. He's been thrust into this position. Most of the top rookies when put into his position can do what he does. Don't get me wrong, he's good. This just speaks volume to how much the Lakers suck in the back court.
So yeah statistically those are dire numbers…but why? If someone paid me, I’d figure it out so we can increase the probability Knecht is successful in the NBA.
No he won't lmao. Jid doesn't play defense and only allowed to play when james sits down. Then when he doing good James comes back and kills the team to lose
As someone that works with advanced statistics for my medical thesis, i want to point out, that the data for 1st pick age vs. Performance is very likely skewed. It seems reasonable to assume, that the no1 picks that were drafted very young, were indeed exceptionally talented or gifted and thus were drafted early. The effect then gets stronger by the fact, that the better a young 1st pick talent is, the earlier he gets drafted. So its probably associated, but not kausal for success, its probably even the other way round (better developed players prob. Perform better, but since they get drafted as soon as they show talent, that usually only happens with people where the scouts are unsure…)
@amhoops because dalton is just a catch and shoot 3 pt shooter. because of AD and Lebron, he has all the space he wants, but you put him on another team and he will struggle. its like yuta watanabe on nets with kd and kyrie looked like ray allen, and then when they left, he looked like a marginal bench player.

he can be a good role player. i think the reason why spurs pass him at 7 is because of defensive weakness. spurs is weak in defense without wemby, knecht will make it worst.
Dalton Knecht is literally 23. It’s no surprise that he can contribute as a rookie.
I hope he will reach a ceiling like a Klay Thompson player that when he catch the ball, wherever he was on the court it is money everytime.
He was drafted about where he should have been. He’s a complementary player who needs to play off better players. He’s not creating this for himself. That says non lottery pick to me.
I'm not sure how this reflects on the quallity of college basketball.
So the NBA doesnt understand the concept of sample size??? I hate that I cant get an analyst job
💯
Knecht after the first 6 games: I UNDERSTAND IT NOW
castle amazing two way player, i know defense doesn't show up on stats like that
No gambling ad woot thumbs up. great videos keep em coming
My second favorite Dalton
I think the stats for performance is strange. To say an 24 year old cannot preform better than an 18 year old needs to be looked at in detail.
Dalton Knecht STARTER or Bench right now 🤔🤔🧐
Those analytics guys in the team scouting team needs to get fired for being giving horrible data to their general manager before selecting the picks.
Video comes out on Dec 1st with a sale that ends Nov 21st ?
Not that hard to Knecht the dots, I don't understand how 16 teams didn't select him!
So yeah statistically those are dire numbers…but why? If someone paid me, I’d figure it out so we can increase the probability Knecht is successful in the NBA.
Honestly if he stays consistent he can easily become a prime Klay Thompson
The same reason 12 teams passed on Gradey Dick the year before and Knecht doesn't have the same potential as he was a three-year college player.
Exactly. As always, the answer is pretty obvious.
Toumani Camara should've gotten a video like this, but he doesn't play for the Lakers lol.
I’m the kid who got the connect 4 signed by him
@amhoops because dalton is just a catch and shoot 3 pt shooter. because of AD and Lebron, he has all the space he wants, but you put him on another team and he will struggle. its like yuta watanabe on nets with kd and kyrie looked like ray allen, and then when they left, he looked like a marginal bench player.
So crazy how Duarte dropped off soooo massively
Nice Grady Dick shout out. He going to be a special player. He like a Mini Step here in Raptors land.

It's probably irrelevant, but the great David Robinson was drafted at like 25 and is a HOFer
Just checked it. He was drafted a few months before turning 22. He then had to serve 2 yrs, because he went to Navy. So he was a 24yo rookie
@@imagin8908 okay I was a little off thanks for correcting me
@imagin8908 i didn't realize he was drafted before 22 either. Thanks again

Your video is about why he’ll never be an all-star and his future is doomed but I don’t think anyone expects him to be an all-star, they just want him to grow from a 3 point specialist to a 3 and d guy which is definitely possible
Did he play at Prarie View in Colorado for high school?
