With the gadgets being objectively made harder to use, i feel Spider-Man 1 beats Spider-Man 2.
    In combat, and story.
I don't think anyone's saying the traversal is better in 1.

Combat is better in Spider-Man 2. Being honest, if you just spam gadgets & just press square & Triangle, you’re more than likely gonna have a preference for the 1st game.
Gameplay as a whole is superior in the sequel. And the player has more control over Spider-Man.

I didn’t hate Spider-Man 2 but I think it’s a big downgrade from the first one. The first game makes me feel so much. Sadness happiness and it just fills me with excitement every time I go to play it again or hear one of the themes. The game understands Spider-Man and sticks to his core without bogging itself down in trying to go big. Playing the game brings me back to when I was 10 playing it for the first time one day after Christmas. The game holds up extremely well with beautiful environments, graphics and animations. The swinging may not be as mechanically rich as its sequel but it is still extremely fun to swing around in. The combat is more grounded and feels more like what Spider-Man would fight like. The combat system is much more fun and satisfying in the first game. Otto is the best villain we’ve had so far. I cared about him so much and I didn’t want him to go bad. Him going bad feels like such a betrayal and you can tell that he’s mentally ill and desperate to claim what should be his. Martin Li is amazing as well. He is so menacing but he tricks you with how friendly he can be at times. I love how he has a sense of honour not wanting to hurt Aunt May even though he knows Peter is Spider-Man. Norman has a huge presence in the game even though he never becomes Green Goblin. I don’t think Norman has to become Green Goblin in every adaptation to be interesting. He is very unlike able but you can sort of understand him just like you can with Martin Li and Otto. The game left me in tears by its ending. Peter having to choose between Aunt May and the entire city is a tough decision to put him in and you can tell it leaves him with guilt. I only wish Insomniac were able to continue that storyline well in the second game but I prefer being positive so I’ll just stick to the first game.

The first game is my favorite because the story felt better told and the characters had more time (I think) to develop.
The 2nd game could have focused just on Kraven or better yet, could’ve taken longer to dispose of him once Venom got introduced. It felt rushed to me and I didn’t really like the way they’ve written Venom.

Yeah the runtime of Spider-Man 2 felt too short for the amount of plot it was trying to get through.

Yes they should have used Kraven as a mentor to strengthen Peter's mind weakened by events and use the symbiote to strengthen his Spiderman side instead of using him as some kind of emotional drug who doesnt make him really powerful

@blacksuit5247 I mean Venom is, metaphorically speaking, an emotional drug for Peter. In many of their stories, Venom works as an insert that allows Peter to cope with the various struggles and balances that come with being Spider-Man and Peter. The power that it grants provides him a means to ease out on the responsibilities that are in front of him until he realizes how damaging it is for him long-term with his use of it. Whether that was handled properly or not in this game is debatable, but the approach I think, was appropriate. Now, I do wonder why you think the symbiote wasn’t as powerful as it should be. Do you think it should have been stronger?

Love how off the bat they made Peter older which can lead to more of a creative story line which is why the mcu spider man origin isn’t good

I never thought of the gadgets in Spider-man 1 as an easy win button, and I genuinely enjoy the pre-planning, specifically in the stealth missions, on where certain gadgets could be used, and for me it actually took away a lot of the enjoyment from the combat in Spider-man 2. Yes it felt quicker and more powerful, but it felt lacking and a lot less fun.
I also found the side-missions in the second game to be lacking more than the first, with collectables too. Like the backpacks in Spider-man 1 were so cool for world building, and I feel like Spider-man 2 lacked that.
Also comparatively, I found most of the characters in Spider-man 1 to be more likeable than Spider-man 2. You felt octavius's struggle and could see his point of view so clearly, that his descent into Doc Ock felt earned and sort of justified. Harry in Spider-man 2...I don't know what it was about him but I just didn't find him that likeable a character, and I know that feeling was completely at odds with the story considering the whole set up was "this is Peter's best friend." It just didn't feel it.
I've replayed Spider-man 1 8 times. Miles Morales 4. Spider-man 2 twice. The first two I find myself going back to, but I don't feel much desire to replay Spider-man 2 again. But I think I might try this challenge, and replay Spider-man 1 again now that 2 is the one I've played most recently, and see if the good feelings I have towards it are still true, or if I'm thinking about it with rose-tinted glasses. It might give me a better appreciation of Spider-man 2 in the end.

I will say, I enjoy the first game in terms of gadgets and super hero and super villain boss battle set pieces
Also for me, I still prefer marvel's spider-man miles morales and marvel's spider-man two in terms of more character building and being friendly neighborhood hero of the people and I love the side missions in this game and the story is still great.

Thats basically the difference between Spider-man and batman. Spider-man is there for everyone. Batman is facing off the evil in his city to stop crime and thats it. Spidey is a great guy and he looks out for the little guys all the time. Which might be boaring in terms of gameplay but thats basically who Spidwr-man is.

The first game is a full package with DLC and an incredible story that felt grounded and relatable. I like the sequel but this is far better.

I know this game is like 5 6 years old. But playing it today doesn’t necessarily feel like OMG I can see the dated downgrades after playing the likes of Miles Morales and Spider-Man 2. Lol But I do recognize how improved the later games became. What definitely doesn’t hold up as well for me was the scope of the side quest. :p Not that they were all terrible. But I enjoy hearing your opinions. Batman Arkham Asylum for example, I can still enjoy that game now without the amazing improvements and extra gadgets from the sequels. I have to remind myself if Arkham City didn’t exist. I agree about the plot presentation in the first game being the strongest. I knew something felt off or lacking in Spider-Man 2. The gadgets, and suit abilities were not as creatively well done as the first. I guess I do like the first more in terms of story to be honest. I do like Spider-Man 2 more overall for the gameplay improvements. That’s what matters enough for me. I didn’t mind what we got, but I’d be lying if I thought it was next level masterpiece. You made interesting points between the two I genuinely agree on. But so far, I am not disappointed where we are so far for Insomniac Spider-Man franchise. I won’t be sad if the third game is the last so long as it’s a satisfyingly perfect conclusive experience.

I swear the people in the comments are never grateful, I absolutely loved the 2nd game and in my opinion, Mary Jane's new face model is a lot better. I do agree that the second one should be a bit longer but in my opinion, spider man 2 will always be superior

I prefer to replay Spider-Man 2018 thousands of times more than repeat Spider-Woke 2 in New York City with Mary Jawline Jane and the not super human Miles's girlfriend

Y'all acting like he's wrong when he really isn't. They focused on pushing dumb agendas, and the story suffered for it, too.
