  • What haunts Greyfriars?
Since 1998, over 350 people claim to have been attacked by an apparent evil spirit, is it the tormented ghosts of dead Covenanters imprisoned there or the vengeful spirit of their tormentor, Sir George 'Bloody' Mackenzie?

Visited Edinburgh a few years back and like you do we decided to go on a ghost walk, this walk included visiting MacKenzie’s Crypt we were warned that we might be attacked scratch and so forth. When the ghost walk was finished my thigh was itching and felt sore, I managed to get to a loo and have a look and my thigh was bright red and had Black and Blue bruising……so there is definitely something paranormal going on 😮

There is one incorrect piece of information in all this:
MacKenzie's tomb is NOT the black mausoleum.
The Black Mausoleum is actually another separate tomb located inside the Covenanter's Prison. It looks like any other mausoleum, but it has no family name on it and therefore it is unknown who was originally buried there. It is a dark gray, almost black tomb, hence the name "The Black Mausoleum". It is also the site of the MacKenzie Poltergeist attacks.

Been on the night tour there and stayed behind in the Covenanter’s area alone for a few to snap pics. Good times!
As an aside, a few of the empty mausoleums in Greyfriars have inscriptions on the inside of the walls of tents with pennants, several of which have the year 1710 evident. One - weirdly enough (and I have pics of this) - has what looks like bird feet.

@TheElderKine yeh it's taken years to decipher it 😄😄 it was also myself that found the old lintel stone from where that lair used to stand before it was moved there in 1689. That enclosure was originally where the MacKenzie mausoleum now stands, it was moved to build that one but they left the remains where they were and build the MacKenzie one on top. The remains are 7 children of the Forrester family. That is also the bones that the homeless guy fell on to after the floor gave way in 1999.

I've been to Edinburgh and to Grey Friars Kirk yard several times - the first time in summer 2001 and I fond my first visit the creepiest one. So I have the impression, that the exorcism had at least a positive effect, even if it couldn't stop the haunting entirely.
