I have this knife after my step dad had it for 10 years and this thing is indestructible. I haven't killed the blade like I do on all the other work knives I buy. U should buy this knife 10/10
I feel so stupid. I was watching this video and was thinking that this dude sounds so much like nutnfancy. Then I look below the video and shame fell over me.
There is a simple yet effective technique to draw the knive out of the sheath with one hand, which I learnt at the austrian army. Put your thumb on the locking part and your index finger under the guard. Do a twisting motion by pressing your thumb down and outward and your index finger up. The locking mechanism will release the knive and you can pull it out.
nudnik88; that definitely works, which I figured out after just a minute or so. Not saying I'm a genius, just that the design is so very intuitive. Excellent knife for the money.
1.) Chopping: put the sharp edge on the wood (you want to chop) and hammer with a heavy branch or heavy piece of wood on the broad piece of the blade on the back - you don`t need a heavy knife - the knife has to be light; 2.) grip: at the end of the grip there is a kind of round button - take it out - put a stick (or rod) in it and you have a spear - stabilize it with a nail through the two holes in the grip; 3.) spring steel is good for sharpening - do it. Greetings from Austria;
I own one and the knife is next to unbreakable, which makes it a good choice for all the things you can imagine, except the most usual one (for the knife), the cutting. It is a good idea to carry another smaller, more fragile, but sharp and edge-holding knife along with your glock.
4.) Opening with one hand: A.) Put your forefinger under the crossguard (not the end with the edge for opening bottels) B.) press the clip of the sheath upwards with your thump (same hand) to unlock the clip-mechanism C.) pull out the knife
Great vid! One thing I would like to add though. Another purpose in all those triangular bayonet were like that so that when stabbed it was MUCH harder to stitch up and thus took longer/got infected and lots of times died.
I actually got this knife this past christmas. ive taken the black finish off the bevel and the false top edge wich i also sharpened, and since these two slight modifications, ive put nylon cord wrap on the shieth and carry it around horizontally. I put the belt loop over a belt loop for my jeans and slide the sheith into another wich makes it really comfortable. Ive used it to do all kinds of things that would be really abusive but its came through every time.
it's the best combat knife for this price... there is no other knife on the market that is so durable and high quality for that price. nut did a good job on it
I bought and carried mine during my service in Germany and Kuwait in the early 90s. Great knife not a lot of money. I have the model 81 sawback and it works well. The knife is very easily unclipped using a thumb and forefinger. the sheath is useable either side important cause Im left handed. Glock made knives before they made guns..
You are correct--it's not a full tang through the handle, because...the handle is hollow: a steel tube surrounded with polymer overmold. But it is *strong* and almost impossible to break. You can pop the cap off the pommel (it doesn't look like a cap, but it is), and use the recess to affix the knife to a pole for use as a spear. You can also store things in the handle--matches, 550 cord, WetFire, etc. Also, it makes sharpening a breeze if you add a little choil (use a chainsaw file) at the plunge point. Cheerio!
doctoroctogonapus8 Yeah, that hole is WAY too narrow and short for the knife to be reasonably used as a spear. Once you whittle a stick down to those dimensions any thrusting and it'd just snap the stick. I plan to keep tinder and a small firesteel in mine.
Since this is mainly a thrusting design for a fighting knife I would go for the plain back so as to get the most on penetration ability through web gear and flack jackets. Of course the edge and clip point treatment nutandfancy gave to his Glock knives is a must.
just wanted to say about when you talked about the bayonet back in the 1800s with triangler blade in battle your correct about being stronger, but y they made it that way was also back in that time it was harder for pple to stitch the wound up. So by that they could only get one straight stitch to keep infection out while leaving the third wound open. In case causing infection and bacteria making for the third wound or slash not heal leading to death alot of times
Hi projek I don't have to compress them as I use a Casio Exilm digital camera that has a TH-cam function built in it. That means it produces QuickTime video files of appropriate size and quality. A 10 min video is about 98mb in that camera. It's simplified my life like a lot!
I've got both (straight usmc fighter and glock 81 (with saw)) and I'd choose the glock, it's amazing and indestructible and takes a razor's edge and are PERFECTLY balanced for throwing, kabars still a great choice but get the glock first
I'm glad that you would suggest these knives. Cause I just ordered one 30 min ago. Then looked for a review after it was ordered. Lol. But nutinfancy to the rescue. I made a good purchase. On a side note I saw your vid review of gunnies in Orem Utah. I live 3 blocks away from there.
Been with TNP since the beginning. Watch every video.... Just got one of these and was thinking how I would like you to do a vid on it... Then I found this! How did I ever miss this video! Keep up the great work brother
Still love this knife. Only fixed blade I own. :p Only really used it once, but it's adequate for me even without messing with the edge. I'm a lightweight in terms of camping and stuff, though, haha.
I love my Glock field knife. I think is makes a excellent combat knife. In fact it was built be a bayonet for the Styre AUG. I wouldn't us it as a survival knife since its not its intent, and the saw back is discouraged for knives. Other than that its a great knife for a great price.
I saw a picture of somebody who had hacked open the handle, and it is not a full tang knife. it goes down about 2-3 inches with some holes for the polymer to fill. I currently own one, and i have not been disappointed so far. it is very light, and i don't think that the short tang would have any effect on the functionality at all, nor would it "pop out" when you use it.
I dont understand all of this chop-things. If you are in emergency, you can chop with this knife probably any wood reasonably fall into consideration in emergency situation. If you going to camp somewhere, take axe, its far better than any knife. Otherwise glock is great knife. Its simple, massive, without useless pseudoergonomic shapes and yes, you must take care about your tool.
Yup, but in almost every knife review the reviewer will talk about the knife as if its the end of the world and that particular knife is the only tool you have. Or they want to justify paying 200-300 dollars on a big name knife (not the glock knife) so they show you how durable it is by going to the back yard and chopping some logs or stabbing some pieces of wood or cutting some rope lol. Nutnfancy means well though hes very passionate about the stuff he reviews.
I have a model 78 just like that, bought it for about $25, it's excellent for a military knife. I'm looking to both types (78 and 81) in all 3 colors (OD, desert and black)
I just bought this knife today and I tried some chopping with it....and with the right techniq (since I'm a drummer I know the techniq) chopping works perfect :)
Not full tang. If you pry off the butt cap you will notice a hollow about an inch or so deep. This is so you can insert a stick and then drive a nail ( or something similar) through that little hole you see in the grip near the cap.
+A Keeper Of Odd Knowledge Actually, it's for attachment to the Steyr AUG assault rifle, which is Austria's (and many other nations) standard issue service rifle.
A Keeper Of Odd Knowledge I imagine it should fit then. The "bottle opener" is actually just the way it was made so that the top of the crossguard would not interfere with the AUG's muzzle harmonics, apparently.
+How Do Ya Like Me Now, Chucklehead? ; very interesting. I always had a hunch that it was maybe a modified bayonet or something. Anyway, while I love the rifle I gave the knife to a very dear friend of mine (who, coincidentally, just passed away from cancer). It was the model 81, in green to match the rifle. Maybe I'll get a model 78 (in green) and keep it with rifle as a matched set. Thank you for the insight!
A Keeper Of Odd Knowledge Not at all, good man. It's a pleasure to finally have a friendly confab on TH-cam for once. I usually get caught up in all of those political discussions and it's frankly bad for my blood pressure. Sorry about your friend, though. Cancer is a bitch. The leading cause of death these days. I think they'll classify it as "natural causes" if this keeps up. Anyways, the upside is that both the 78 and 81 are relatively cheap for the quality of the product. A new one is basically an eBay click away. :)
$28, (inc. s/h,) i think is still a good price on such a durable, quality knife. FWIW, just b/c it doesnt come razor sharp doesnt mean it cant become that sharp. Mine are sharp enough to make incredible feathersticks. Only takes 15min w/ auto sandpaper.
Bobby Polk yup- w/ good tool steel, wet/dry paper works very well. I use it over leather or a mousepad to make a convex edge- the strongest edge shape. It also makes a good field sharpener since it's cheap, light, and water resistant. A $6 variety pack will last you a long time. If you want a more polished edge, add higher grits, 1200 & 2000. The 1st sharpening will take awhile, b/c you're lowering the stock angle. After that, a few minutes takes you from dull to razor sharp. Strop it on leather, or a similar smooth surface. Glock uses good quality steel, and it's easy to maintain it. Sawback or plain? Well, normally i'd say plain, as it allows more holds, and is stronger. But on the Glock? Both are great, the Saw is actually great for notching, and very useful. Another great value knife is a Mora, esp the Companion & HD. They are more designed for fine cuts, but also very strong, great steel, (stainless option,) and easy to sharpen. They're $15. Both knives are incredibly good, with great handles and sheaths, made in Europe, and are tough as heck while still being lightweight. I'd get both! ;)
Do you mean the Glock 36, the single stack .45? If so then I think it's outstanding. 'Bout the same size as a G19 at 20 oz. If I'm allowed hollow point use, I'd probably opt for .40 or 9mm for more compactness. Some say the Glock is most reliable in the originally designed 9mm loading. However if stuck with FMJs (Geneva Convention), .45 wins big time.
I may pick one of these up for a camping trip later this year... It's definitely a good price, but I'd be concerned about the rusting that seems to be an issue with these guys. Although I could just as easily oil it, so I suppose the poing is moot.
Hi nutn, great to see a video from one of my favorite reviewers on one of my favorite knives!! But I have to tell you, that it is possible to draw it one handed. For to learn how you can watch my two vids about it, in them I also show how the handle looks under the X-Ray, so you can see how for the tang reaches into the handle. best regards, TheCrazyCarpenter91
@Solareffects I bought mine in a Gunshop in Vienna vor 30 bucks. Maybe this would be also a good place to look for you; if there are any shops of this kind in your area of course. Oh and on a sidenote, if you do get one, you really have to regrind the knive. by
great review - but one thing. you do not need two hands to get the knife out of the sheath. it is pretty easy to pull the clip with your thumb or your forefinger and to draw the knive - particularly if you wear it on your shoulder upside down.
@eastofakron1 Its my laziness. There was an organized effort from a few other gun channels to downrate Nutn's vids (this was a long while ago, back when there was 1-5 star ratings), and we disabled ratings. I keep saying that I'm going to re-enable the ratings, but its like 500 vids..ugh. =/ -- Veri
Nutn, this blade is not full tang, however, you can take the pin out holding the butt plate in, and then you are able to use the knife as a spearhead, because the handle is hollow. thank you for the review!
For the same reason Balisongs are illegal in most states, they were favored by criminals and earned a negative reputation, so lawmakers decided to ban them based mostly on that reason.
I have that knife in black, they hold an edge fair, and is easy to sharpen once it does get dull, and in my opinion a fair fighting knife, not much for general servival. In all honesty for your hard earned money Id say go with the K-BAR fighting knife, its a better knife all away round.
You can draw the knife with a single hand. Using finger snapping like motion to release the knife from the sheath. Index under level part of guard and thumb on top of release. Now snap--it pops up
The Glock is of the same design of the SLR (FN-FAL) bayonet only a bit lighter, both are good knives & yes I do own a 78, as I went for the quality as well as strength; & as you say...a good all-rounder! I'd still love to get a 1910 .303 Tiger pattern bayonet, hard as hell to get them nowadays here in Oz....by the way my knife cost me $99 but they do go for as little as $65 online but whatcha going to do when you want it now?! I've yet to put mine into use but I know that it will do the job!
@Supermassively 78 if u dont like combo edge bro, the saw back on the 81 is more a ripping cut when stabbing with, rather than cut wood with, i perfer the 78 of the 2 the saw back is more looks than anything else. hope this helps
The handle is hollow. You can remove that plastic plate at the end. And then fill it with fishing hooks or whiskey. Or put a long strong stick in it and use the whole thing as a spear. the hollow inside is of metal, like some kind of tube. Could be the same metal peace like the place, just tube-shaped in the handle.
Is the knife full tang? Im trying to decide between the glock 78 and the smith and wesson search and rescue knife. If the glock isnt full tang im going with the s&w. so...is it full tang?
Hey man, I like your videos, but when you say that you're not sure if it's a full tang knife, it's really easy to check if you have a powerful magnet, just run it down the handle, and you can tell.
@szinyovszky agreed... put your index finger in front of the finger guard on the handle, depress the latch with thumb. lift knife with index finger past the latch and obtain the proper grip. i usually just "pop" mine free, let it rest in the sheath above the latch... the get proper grip. its not the most ideal design for a fighting knife, but then again, its not necessarily designed as a "fighting knife".
Australia: South Australia Police (M&P40 - replaced Smith & Wesson .357 revolvers). Victoria Police (M&P40 - replaced S&W .38 Model 10 revolvers). Belgium: 20,000 M&P9 pistols were purchased by the Federal Police in 2011, replacing the Browning Hi-Power. Canada: Halton Regional Police Service, Peel Regional Police, St. Thomas Police Service, and the Gatineau Police Department. Colombia: M&P9 used by DAS agents. France: M&P9 used by the Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety Institute. I can go on.
Just picked one up for $19.99 on "weekly special" at a local gun shop. If it was more than $20 I probably would not have bought it. For $20 though it's a great deal!
No I'm not arguing that Glock is not a exceptional weapon with an exceptional track record. Nor am I arguing that the M&P has the track record even comparable to the Glock. It would be an unfair comparison considering the Glock has been around since the 80's, whereas the M&P was released in 2006. I am merely stating that the M&P, in my opinion gives Glock a run for it's money in manufacturing quality. I am also stating that, in my opinion, agencies worth mentioning do indeed approve of the M&P.
Could I position that knife on a MOLLE load out? Also great video! I saw this knife for sale and I knew you were the person to go to for a review, thanks nutn.
Nutn is right. Get this knife reprofiled on its edge, and it is transformed into am amazing knife. I have a model 78. I tried and tried to put a good edge on one of it. Unless you are a pro, or have professional equipment, it is near impossible to put a proper edge and tip on these things. But 8 bucks at a professional sharpening shop will turn out a knife who's utility capability will rival any similarly sized knife in existence. Hooks that edge well too
Hey dude, i bought a second hand glock 78 but its totally dull, im not sure what angle of sharpening i should keep (what was it originally, because its hard to see now). Could you give me some advice on sharpening this knife? Thanx a lot, greeting from Poland!
Ha Ha, yeah, here in cali, it's only legal to carry a balisong with a 2in or smaller blade, whereas you can carry pretty much any other size fixed blade.
i asked on one of your other vids if you had one for a glock knife before i found this. do you have a vid of the knife in use? i need to just get mine out and use it to see how it works for me, but i'm still learning "knives" so i'm asking a lot of questions. but in your opinion? this would be ok for a lot of tasks? but maybe not for building a fire from scratch? (not good at the chopping that would be needed) so should i look into a kabar? or should i just add a small hatchet to my kit?
@lardtaziumwadmaster It might be harder because the round wound would be really clean. It's pure stabbing (so also less penetration) and those sharp edges make a huge difference. Also, the tri-angular shape would still be stronger.
Are you austrian? If so were you in the Bundesheer?
nudnik88; that definitely works, which I figured out after just a minute or so. Not saying I'm a genius, just that the design is so very intuitive. Excellent knife for the money.
+Oliver Katinger Bundeswehr is German I think
+Oliver Katinger , yes I was in the Bundesheer back in 92...
Just bought one today and I must say for 27 dollars I am impressed for the price. It is a solid solid knife that I believe will last a long time.
1.) Chopping: put the sharp edge on the wood (you want to chop) and hammer with a heavy branch or heavy piece of wood on the broad piece of the blade on the back - you don`t need a heavy knife - the knife has to be light; 2.) grip: at the end of the grip there is a kind of round button - take it out - put a stick (or rod) in it and you have a spear - stabilize it with a nail through the two holes in the grip; 3.) spring steel is good for sharpening - do it. I purchased a Glock 81 several months ago. I love it. Blade definiately locks TIGHT in the sheath.
best knife for the money i have found so far

i got the 81 model with the saw in the backbone! Its an old all black version ,but still the same ass kicking! These knifes are amazing!
Great vid! One thing I would like to add though. Another purpose in all those triangular bayonet were like that so that when stabbed it was MUCH harder to stitch up and thus took longer/got infected and lots of times died.
Much knife, little money, such value, how survivol, wow sich guod

Standard issue in the Danish army along with the Glock entrenching tool.
Bayonets used to be triangular because they would leave a triangular puncture wound which wouldn't heal easily.
Ya they were more along the lines of a spear instead of a blade.
Sammyjeans1 Also, the triangular wound was very difficult to treat and stitch
Hi projek
I don't have to compress them as I use a Casio Exilm digital camera that has a TH-cam function built in it. That means it produces QuickTime video files of appropriate size and quality. A 10 min video is about 98mb in that camera. It's simplified my life like a lot!

$22 at Midway... Stock up!
wheres midway!?! i cant find em less than 30.00 ?
i see em but there 28$ at midway now :( other great knives at that store though

I think the saw on the 81 is more conducive to cutting thin sheet metal like an aircraft's skin, a-la the AFSK and the ASEK survival knives.
It's not just inspired by the bayonet design, it is a bayonet! The plug on the pommel comes off to reveal the mounting socket
I may pick one of these up for a camping trip later this year... It's definitely a good price, but I'd be concerned about the rusting that seems to be an issue with these guys. Although I could just as easily oil it, so I suppose the poing is moot.

you can unclip the knife with one hand (use your thumb to bent the clip and your index finger to raise the knife) when it is on your belt
@Tylerweastable - If your knife rusts dont you think thats your fault. The knife cant avoid moisture by itself and it cant oil itself.
You can always sharpen the blade, and to balance the knife a little better, carefully remove the endcap, and you can put things in there.
I have the older one military version with the rounded logo, and mine has been to desert storm. It's herd to sharpen by hand because its very thick.
great review - but one thing. you do not need two hands to get the knife out of the sheath. it is pretty easy to pull the clip with your thumb or your forefinger and to draw the knive - particularly if you wear it on your shoulder upside down.
if you're in Sydney - bankstown gun shop, horsley park gun shop, any hunting and military show would have those.
yeah, i heard it on there too (i love that show), but my grandfather had told me the same thing
"in fact it sucks for chopping"
shounds like a good survival knife...
For the same reason Balisongs are illegal in most states, they were favored by criminals and earned a negative reputation, so lawmakers decided to ban them based mostly on that reason.
i also have a glock knife it is awesome it comes razor sharp!
Now snap--it pops up
What is your method on sharpening Glock Knives. Could you make a video on that or go into more detail on that?
Could be the same metal peace like the place, just tube-shaped in the handle.
i just bought the 81 at the gun show for $25
i picked out the sharpest one i could find and stropped it once i got home and its sharp as fuck now
would u recomend the survival knife for a survival situation? would you carry it in a survival situation. i trust ur opinion. haha.
i bought this knife because of this review
Was just wondering why I can't find this review in any of your playlists?
Is the knife full tang? Im trying to decide between the glock 78 and the smith and wesson search and rescue knife. If the glock isnt full tang im going with the s&w. so...is it full tang?
Agreed. But I'm saying that its a second line of attack just in case the initial attack failed and he lived.
+nutnfancy not trying to take a shot or anything, glock knife is awesome, but its a direct copy of the eikhorn Solingen AES.
Dude that looks like kabar and does the survival knife perform well in the wilderness like cutting tree branchings
Hey man, I like your videos, but when you say that you're not sure if it's a full tang knife, it's really easy to check if you have a powerful magnet, just run it down the handle, and you can tell.
Perhaps your friend is thinking about Hi-Point. Glocks are used throughout the world because of their reliability.
@mikef262 Totally different knives, the Kabar is a combat knife the Glocks are field knives
Huh. Think I'll be picking one of these up for the go bag. Just need a decent fixed blade for camping/emergency stuff.
Thanks much gunits
A knife that opens beer bottles from a gun company... now thats inovation... thanks for the review nutnfancy
I am also stating that, in my opinion, agencies worth mentioning do indeed approve of the M&P.
this is an awesome throwing knife
Could I position that knife on a MOLLE load out? Also great video! I saw this knife for sale and I knew you were the person to go to for a review, thanks nutn.
I ordered on of these still waiting for it to come in.
Hooks that edge well too
Going to say, just push the tip of your finger under the catch to release with one hand, that's how I do mine.
Looks a lot like the US WWII M3 'trench knife,' which is what the M6/M7 bayonets were derived from
NutnFancy where do you get your blades profiled??? It looks wicked.
well. lemme ask you something. would it be a type of knife that u would carry into a survival situation. ? please get back to me.
This is the story of a man who loves his gun and has misplaced affection for his lesser known knife.
i asked on one of your other vids if you had one for a glock knife before i found this. do you have a vid of the knife in use? i need to just get mine out and use it to see how it works for me, but i'm still learning "knives" so i'm asking a lot of questions. but in your opinion? this would be ok for a lot of tasks? but maybe not for building a fire from scratch? (not good at the chopping that would be needed) so should i look into a kabar? or should i just add a small hatchet to my kit?
@Supermassively btw i can totaly back up Nutn' on saying the glock is not sharp outa the box, but a great knife once you get an edge put on it
ooooo you got a nice tent stake!
Better then a shitty tent stake lol
@sonofsigns my vote would be fore the Ontario SP10 marine raider bowie.. nutn has a review on it, i own one. its a beast.
@lardtaziumwadmaster It might be harder because the round wound would be really clean. It's pure stabbing (so also less penetration) and those sharp edges make a huge difference. Also, the tri-angular shape would still be stronger.
did you hear that on pawn stars from history channel?
u forgot to mention how you can turn it into a spear when you pop off the butt cap.
I have a glock 78 knife that has a circle glock logo instead of the usual squared logo. Is mine a authentic glock knife???
