SOG SEAL Pup Elite: "Light Tactical Done Right" by Nutnfancy

- The SOG SEAL Pup Elite is a big upgrade over the original SEAL Pup. As previously reviewed, the original SEAL Pup came up short in the Nutnfancy review in July 2008: handle is too short, cutting edge terminates too far away from hilt, poor steel, abbreviated thumb ramp on top, and an abrupt grind that prevents ultra-sharpness (from the box). Enter the Elite where most of the shortcomings have been fixed: longer handle with deeper finger grooves offer better traction and balance, better AUS8 steel (vs the softer AUS6), hollow grinding allows for sharper edge, added spine rasp for wilderness notching (maybe finger placement too), and a thicker blade (.185" vs .155"). Quality is excellent. For its reasonable price it is a lot of knife that can function both as a tactical LBE blade and camp/utility knife. It, like its predecessor, retains the compact form and lightweight (about 9 oz total weight) that make it so carryable and likely to be on you when you need it. Some wilderness testing showed the Pup Elite to be a capable albeit light duty woodworking performer for firecraft preparation. The included Kydex sheath with 'American Sportsman' QD attachment is excellent though the cord cutting notch holds marginal utility. I prefer the Kydex sheath in the Elite over the also-offered ballistic nylon alternative. At its price point and carry weight it will be hard to top the SOG SEAL Pup Elite as a utility knife or close quarter defensive tool.

Nutnfancy, your vids have really inspired me to put down the Xbox controller every once and a while and get outdoors.
From beginning to end pure class,,sound, visual clarity, editing, commentary and experience,,an awesome review and always wise to simply throw in a kabar as the benchmark...pure class!!
after days of research and recommendations from enough people who know what they were talking about, I have placed an order for one of these babies. But I have to say, TNP was definitely the most helpful when it came down to details beyond the box descriptions.
Love how you stop the spider (12:05) cold in its tracks at with the older seal pup.
Something about SOG knives I just dig. Their designs tend to be more of what I am looking for in a knife.
Love the SOG Seal Pup Elite, have added it to my collection.
Thanks Nutn
Great production values as always, just to let you know the hard work you put in is very much appreciated. Well done!
I just bought the sog seal pup elite (partially serrated) and all I have to say is "wow"
I was amazed that this knife straight out of the box was sharp enough to shave the hairs off my arm. I never thought I would buy a knife that sharp from the factory. going camping this weekend to test out how well it keeps it's edge under moderate use. I would most definitely recommend this knife if you are looking into getting it.
Another superb knife review. Thoughtful & thorough. Your reviews are without peer.
I appreciate your honesty about what your are and are not experienced with.
I think this is the third time I've watched this video, I love that blade and can't wait to add it to my collection.
I got the gerber strongarm and love it.
Dudes! Nicely done. Have been considering picking one of these up and I am so glad I watched your thorough review to understand the differences of the original pup before even having one in the hand. Keep up the good work!
I picked up a standard seal pup in OIF3 to attach to me LBE. I already had a seal pup back home so I knew that the weight and dimensions were exactly what I wanted. My second seal pup happened to come with the second generation kydex case, which immediately impressed me and bothered me for the very same reasons you mention. I simply unscrewed the belt clip and extremely tightly zip tied the sheath amongst my gear in an optimum location. The sheath itself holds the knife in well enough on its own. What I was left with was a profile that tucked in well behind anything else that could snag while moving or crawling, and the shortness made it hide out of sight and chance to snag against magazine pouches. So I find that both for close quarters options, and ability to move, the shortness is a plus, as you touched on, but leave out the general mobility.I agree with pretty much everything you say things anyway, basically just difference of POU which you also adress, but to mention two things that caught my attention... 1) The gap between the hilt and the beginning of the blade on the seal pup vs the elite is actually beneficial, first by adding a little overall strength, but second, in the instance that you happen to strike something that you anticipate will be soft, so your grip is a little looser, and then the blade hits a hidden solid object (bone), your hand will slip and your finger WILL get cut (unless you wear some cut proof gloves). Having that extra amount of blade for your finger to slide along could be the difference between a good amount of blood loss and nicking or severing the ligaments and tendons, thus reducing your effectiveness.2) The jimping on the blade adds resistance upon penetration and will reduce strike depth and I would guess greatly reduces the chance of reasonable penetration through Kevlar, which is possible after all.
thank you, thats essential information - the limit for legal fixed blades in Germany for example is 12cm which is around 4" so this one is too long. The Gryphon, btw, fits in that limit perfectly :)
Great job! Thanks for all the vids, Nutnfancy and crew.
The nylon sheath has a plastic insert and it can be attached to molle very easily.
I bought this recently with the new Kydex sheath. That sheath is much better than any of the old models. The TiNi blade coating was a waste of money since it doesn't last. The knife arrived dull as hell. It took an hour on my low grit Japanese water stones just to make a serviceable edge, then another hour making the edge properly sharp. I was really surprised. SOG usually delivers excellent edges out of the box. But now that I have put a proper edge on this knife, I can see the use of this knife. I prefer the large/small knife and a hatchet combination in the bush and this light, serviceable knife is an excellent small knife for the little tasks such as food, forage and game preparation. I am not sure whether I prefer it to my Becker BK17, though, which is almost as light and easily takes a razor sharp hone and has a better profile for a small woodsman's knife.
This is my kayak/boat knife. It rides on my life jacket next to my VHF radio
Just picked this knife up and it is amazing thanks for the great review as always
I Will Just Love That SOG offer a "SOG Seal Pup Elite, SAtin Finish, SERRATED knife.
They dont offer this combination.
They only offer with that combination in the Black Finish.
Great Video.
Thorough review, keep them coming!
Thanks.
I got the Seal Pup Elite plain edge satin as seen here. I like it, good light all purpose blade. Mine came with the nylon sheath which I was OK with as I could wear it on the left side. The wierd thing was the sheath had a flap which clipped over the top of the handle totally hiding the knife. I've never seen this even on the SOG site. Before long I modded it, cut the flap and extra straps off and restitched the edges. Much better now, easier to get at the blade.
The SOG Seal Pup Elite (satin finish without serrations) is a beautiful knife to hold and behold.
I just realized, I piss away way too much time watching Nutnfancy vids.
nicely done. I gotta pick up one of those!
Another good vid form TNP. Cheers and keep them coming.
the elite looks to be an improvement overall, great review as always. plus I really like in these reviews that you're showing field use in the opening. awesome!
i got the original seal pup, this year the grip is the same as the elite, as well as it was catalogued at aus8 steel as well. the jimping pised me off beyond belief on the elite, as well as the blade doesn't have the gap anymore.
great review regardless, fuckin eh from canada
The thing is that SOG create this kind of blade for Penetration purpose (Fighting/killing), and not so well design for Batoning (part of the purpose , but not the main purpose).
They thought so well all angles over this Bowie blade.
I own the SOG S10b Tech Bowie. And it is great.
So now i look for a Serrated pup SOG knife, for carrying & everyday use.
Great Video.
@HairofSteel555 I believe that the Elite blade is a bit thicker, and has the option of no serrations. Other than that I think they are pretty much the same now.
So I just got the SOG Seal Pup, but it's different from yours, it's got the thumb notch on the back of the blade, the serration starts closer to the handle, it's a longer handle. It's pretty much the same as the Seal Pup Elite you're showing, without the notching stuff on the back, I'm not sure if it's the 2nd generation or w/e, but I think the made improvements to the original Seal Pup
Nutn, Maybe some time you could do another short (re-visited) video on your concept of mobility versus firepower as that issue relates to concealed carry. It has been very difficult for me to sell the idea (I know that is not my job. lol) that mobility is much more important than firepower to the civilian concealed carry people. It would be great if I could send a brief video of yours to these people. Maybe they would see the light. Your theory surely sheds light on the subject.
if you're strapping it on some molle gear, I'd suggest the Seal pup - in nylon sheath version. they nylon sheath is very durable (used it for 6 months in Afghanistan). What I liked was that it fits well onto your kit and doesn't get caught on things like a rigid kydex sheath. Also, the nylon sheath has a nice pocket for a hone or a multitool. That being said, it also hangs nicely off the belt loop. The only reason i switched knives was that the benchmade cbk i ended up with was smaller.
5 stars for the spider walking through your review.
does it have a decent sized tang or a rat tail?
cool review I have always wanted one of these and have never bought or seen any SOG in real life so I just never bought one. Might have to add one of these to my next set of purchases.
NutnFancy, there's always a DING DONG in the crowd, Thanx for your review on the S.P.E., Your my reference, and I'm buying one.
when you see it

Both knives are AUS-8
great vid. i have the original seal pup great knife but i should of got the strait edge. it came with the new american sportsman products sheath and while i was over seas i zip tied it upside down to my mtv armor on chest left side. worked great. no issues. blade never fell out. i unscrewd the belt compatible part. loved it!!
this knife fits my loadout perfectly. the gov tac was too big, the gerber mark II too bulky, the fixation bowie was just very impractically shaped/had a bad sheath. this will work, especially when placed on the vest or armor, as a sidearm makes carrying a fixed blade on the dominant side a tad awkward
Awesome review fancy, why are the ratings disabled though? You know we always treat you right.
Another good review by Nutnfancy.
THX, very cool review. It convinced me to order new (aus 8) version of a Seal Pup. But in a close price range we have now knives like Mora Bushcraft Orange ( or Black) with 3.2 mm blade thicknes ( stainless or carbon), or even Gerber Prodigy. These are also good "do all" knives.
@Uri24 It's supposed to be for notching things such as tent stakes or hunting traps.
I bought a SOG SEAL pup from Dick's Sporting Goods recently, it looks more like the elite than the regular pup. Its edge starts alot sooner like the elite even though it is labeled as the pup, any body see this?
Happy New Year's to Nutnfancy and kin! Enjoying your videos :)
yay a knife review. happy new year
For the price and functionality you can't beat it 5* nutn.
Nutn, you have to try out the Field Pup. Checked one out at a local surplus store, but they wanted 54$ for it... Seen them for much less elsewhere so waiting to see if I can get a deal.
But from what I saw on their display model, the jimping is amazing (best Ive ever seen). And it is RAZOR sharp.
nutn - i would love to see your take on some bark river knives, perhaps the bravo 2? i know they are not quite so "high value" but i know you do have some more expensive blades...
As usual, great vid Nutn! I think that you are right. CQC application...the Seal Pup Elite should work exceptionally well. I have the original and it hasn't let me down.
Great review, nutnfancy! Thanks for posting.
Nutn that Syperco you strapped to your LBE doesn't look like it's in a very "reach-able place. the way the grip is oriented it looks like you would REALLY have to reach all the way across your body with your right-hand and if you were drawing reverse grip with your left-hand that also looks like it was put in a very "out of the way position" Just food for thought man. Love your videos been watching for years
yes! SOG! Love sog and really like that knife.
NICE! Been eager to see this review, Nutn!
Patiently waiting for that Fallkniven A1 review too.
Keep them comin' bro-dawg!
*****
Sweet Fallkniven A1, can't wait for the tabletop review.
Better yet would be a review of the F1.
nutnfancy makes another great review...(P.S.) I love the way the sog seal pup elite looks
@Uri24 Its partly jimping and partly so you can use it as a wood notching ish thing.
Nutn - Great review, thanks!
that slit in the new sheath for a belt cutter or whatever is so STUPID...who the hell got fired for that one...
im thinking about picking this up. I think i might be able to do better though.
I really like this knife and also the Ka-Bar USMC knife. I like how this knife looks far more than the Ka-Bar, and I like the kydex sheath better, but would you recommend this or the Ka-Bar?
I've found a site that has them both for roughly the same price, the Seal pup elite being only a couple bucks more because of the kydex sheath option.
Thanks
Live spider, top right @ 12:09 lol.. 5 stars here since I can't rate above. Please let me know as well if you have an opinion about the LMF II Gerber. Seems kind of pricey... I like the seal pup elite. Thanks Nutn...
i like the seal pup elite. ive been thinking of getting this knife for awhile. my other choice would be the cold steel srk. i can only get one, wat would u reccomend?
tnx for the great vid 5/5 and a happy newyear nutn
Nice video ... happy new year for everybody!
SOG is getting better! I'm Digging my twitch 2
You should review the sog seal team elite
@St00ge1
I have a Gerber LMF asek and It's a very good knife very strong but a there's too much weight in the back.
I thinking to get this Sog elite is much lighter ( a half of weight)
Gerber - 11.4oz
Sog-5.4oz
I dont saw the video yet , I waiting load for watching!! I hope that nuntnfancy likes the tiny SOG!
Hugs
@04warrior350 Nutn says Seal Pup Elite, but why not an Ontario SPp43? -- Veri
@Eagle10710 thanks. I triec it on a broom stick right now and,,,it did'nt do so well. I can see the point of it in the part closer to the end. but why do I need this traction in the part closer to the tip? im asking this cause im thinking about flatten it out
@nutnfancy Hey Veri, did you ask Nutn what he thinks of the LMF II and Prodigy knives?
Ok. Now since with the SEAL Pup Redux, what is the real differences between the Elite and the original Pup. I own a standard Pup, but it looks like the Elite, and is AUS 8 just like the Elite. (Minus the spine jimping and it's partial serrated) I just want to know if there is any real big differences between the two.
you can buy a kydex sheath for the newer one as well.
I'm looking for a survival knife that is small to mid-range in size and money. I think for my use a large knife is not needed. Out of the SOG SEAL Pup Elite or the Cold Steel SRK which do you think is a better blade for : light batoning, making tinder and small jobs around a campsite.
Hey Nutn,
I am trying to choose between the SOG seal pup elite and the Gerber LMF II. Do they both have the same capabilities or would one win over the other?
Cheers and Happy New Year!!
Hey, I dislike the new style kydex sheaths and I'm wondering will the elite fit in the regular pups sheath? I know the blades are a little different but maybe there's some play room in there?
I ordered a Becker BK2 as a batoning/camping/survival knife, but if I were looking for a second carry that I could use (will be minimal batoning unless zombies take my Becker), what would you recommend?
SOG Seal Pup Elite or the Gerber LMF ii Survival?
If the SOG...serrated or non?
What i should to choose. Sog Seal Pup Elite or Cold Steel SRK? Maybe something diffrent for that price. Im thinking about Benchmade Rant DPT. Typical knife for outdoor, "light" survival knife. Makeing meals, batoning light woods. Sorry for my english.
I'm going to buy this knife I'm sure of that but I also want to buy the SOG Vulcan and I dont know what version is the best the tanto or the normal blade, what do you recomend me ?
holy cow the sog seal pup elite is used in call of duty black ops i cant remember what mission though but in the corner where the compus is it tells u
just wondering is that spine rasp also an less than lethal knife fighting tool love your videos
Spider made the best animal featuring after allie, on tnp project. Tks for not killing it.
my dad is an expert sharpener. he was trained by zolan mcarthy in georgia. zo.lan made a custom knife for him too
@nutnfancy
PLEASE do a tabletop on the team elite, being only 14, i sorta look up to you and would like to see you review my main survival knife. would you consider this?
thanks
@tdub9899 i saw one a walmart as well. I was puzzled because the box said seal pup only and i cant figure the difference exactly since the knife itself looked exactly like the seal pup elite. And its only $50 at walmart. Can you give me any insight into the walmart version and if its worth it, well as any difference from this one nutn reviews.
hey nutn, just wondering. I am probably going to join the marines next year and was going to get a loadout knife to take with me, would you recomend this seal pup elite? or the cold steel SRK?
5/5 great vid. I want a seal pup elite now!
hey nutn umm would u say that a Ka-Bar 1211 model with serrations would be a good survival knife
Would you recommend the SOG SEAL Pup Elite over the KA-BAR Tanto for bushcraft and general utility?
i got my brother the buck vantage pro for christmas and he loves it
@JimzOnDroid
If I understand your doubt:
probably the difference is the Steel of blade AUS6 again AUS8 that is much better!! therefore is this a difference of price !
do you think it would be a good idea to do "stipelling" on the handle?
Great Video Nuttin! keep it up
dear nutn/veri,
why does nutn not try the gerber lmf 2? if you would please respond, but if you dont have the time that is fine. but i was just wondering.
Is there any difference between the normal one and the limited edition aniversary version of the seal pup elite?
awesome review! keep them coming. these reviews just makes me wanna buy everything he reviews . 5*
@driftworld86 He did say he'd like to see a better finger guard on top, continuing of the spine rasp all the way to the guard and that the handle didn't give super traction so maybe that's why. And Nutn definitely does prefer plain edge blades generally speaking. I think the only serrations he approves of are those done by some Kershaw blades, but for LBE or survival blades he def. likes plain edge, and has said so in a lot of videos.
@nutnfancy which knife would u prefer between the SOG seal pup Elite or the SOG seal team Elite? coz im lookin for a new blade nd i would like eather 1 umm nd also with sheath would u prefer the kydex or the nylon? nutn please answer my question
