Larry got his work Ethic From his dad. I have a lot of Respect For Larry Bird. Larry is one of a kind. I don't watch NBA anymore. It changed so much and not for the better. It the pampering not team playing, ball hogs , relying on one player and some of the new rules I dont care for. It got soft more about looking good and not playing.

Great series, Bird is still my favorite player of all time. As for playing through the pain, LeBron and most of the other players today couldn’t handle what he went through. Bird was the hardest working player ever and laid it all out for his team.
The game where Bird and Dr J had a fight was unreal. There were 6 members of the NBA 75th Anniversary team on the floor - Bird, Dr J, Charles Barkley, Moses Malone, Robert Parrish and Kevin McHale.

Walton and the other players were there for a fundraiser at Bird's college. Walton loves Bird,took over the fundraiser talking about how great Bird was.

Thank you! This was a great vid. I don't think people talk enough about that '92 Celtics/Portland game Larry Bird played in a full body back brace and had a 49 point triple double. From that point afterward, no one in the NBA would have that high of a scoring triple double again until Russell Westbrook finally tied it with a 49 point triple double in 2015. That's Twenty Three Years. Not only that, in the entirety of the 80's no one achieved that high of a scoring triple double. (The closest was 2 guys who each managed a 47 point triple double. One of those guys was Michael Jordan and the other one was...Larry Bird.) You have to go all the way back to 1975 when Kareem scored a 50 point triple double. So, as far as I can tell, that 49 point triple double was the highest scoring triple double for about a 40 year span that included the biggest concentration of all time greats in NBA history and when it was a defensive driven era. And this was old, broke down, beaten up, broke back Larry Bird at the very end of his NBA career (he played only 9 regular season games after this) having to maneuver around the court in a hard shell back brace. With his body broken, he must have been playing purely on heart. And even his heart was broken by then, because Magic had been forced to retire and didn't play that season.
In my simple mind, I believe '92 to be Larrys prime time because of everything he had to overcome. Being able to still put up unbelievable numbers is a testament to his ability to overcome any obstacles.
To my mind, Larry Bird developed a work ethic watching his father go to work everyday in pain just to feed his family. It was an example that Larry followed in his entire basketball career.
Respect to Bird and respect to you for a great 4 part series. Looking forward to more of your vids bro!
MJ is the most explosive offensive player I've ever seen, but if there was an all-time draft and every player was 20 years old I'd take Larry Bird first over all because of everything he'd bring from the get go. If he'd of had a healthy or even somewhat healthy 16-17 year career he'd be in everybody's GOAT conversation.

I’ve had 5 fusions and no longer feel my legs but for Bird to play ball with back issues for years is amazing . There is no type of pain that wears you down like spinal degeneration . Try standing in burning water and feel nothing then without feet having radiating shots of pain go down both legs thru your groin every time you moved . Bird played with this for years !

As always your review of what we watched is always on the level. Really like that. Going back to the 89 game where he hit head hard on floor. Your right he did go back to work. But that was after he actually went to the locker room to get xrays and was told he couldn't play anymore due to the fractures suffered around his forehead and eye. He actually asked someone in the back to do something to distract the doctor so he could go back out to the floor. This is verified in Jackie's book about Bird and Magic.. That's where I learned of this.

“Didn’t we talk about this before?” Dan Patrick asked Quinn Buckner. “When you guys played the Chicago Bulls, first round of the playoffs, and you guys went out. It might have been you and [Rick] Robey. And you went out with Bird, and the Chicago Bulls cheerleaders bought you beers, figuring they could get Larry drunk. And then Larry lit them up, and then walked off the floor and walked by the cheerleaders and said, ‘Thanks for the beers.’”
Quinn Buckner simply answered the question saying:
“I didn’t tell you the story, but the story is true.”

Walton did Larry's Hall of Fame induction speech. He used to be a terrible stutterer.. Do you know how great Walton was? He was the 77' MVP, he was College Player of thew Year, Wona rirle in 77' with the Trailblazers, and had the greatest performance in NCAA championship history. I believe he had 44 points, missed ONE shot. Foot problems shortened his career and the Celtics resurrected it.

"Playing with Larry was like being on tour with the Gratful Dead, you never knew what is going to happen, but you knew it would be explosive, dynamic, fun and competitive!"😂

Thank you for talking to everyone about the difference in era's. I tell everyone about the equality of available resources in the 80s compared to the 2020s. I included statements about how the game and players today is almost as bad as the 70s. Bird, Magic, Stern and the CBS deal( I believe it's was CBS) saved basketball. Bird and Magic pushed each other to become better every yr. This helped advanced techniques. 3 pointers just started Birds rookie yr.

@BU_TV What made Larry (Legend) Bird the greatest pure shooter and why I feel he was an assassin, a sniper when shooting a basketball is the fact that very rarely did the ball hit anything but nylon when he took a jumper. Most every jumper he hit, you would (as I like to say) hear that net scream out the word SH*T as it touched nothing but the bottom of the net.
In a full torso brace and barely able to walk, Bird scored 49 points against a peak Clyde Drexler. For people who don't believe Larry Bird is great, they need to let that sink in for a minute.

Larry is *not* "slow". No one in the NBA is "slow". Larry is all about "economy of movement" and conservation of energy. He runs fast enough. He jumps high enough. He thinks The Game faster than anyone. It does *not* matter "what he looks like". Look at his results. If Johnson is "Magic", Larry is "Mysterious". Watch his *feet*. His reflexes are hyper fast. No hesitation. His mind is turned *on*. Beyond sharp. He *knows*. He does *exactly enough* to get the job done, whatever the job, no more, no less.

When I watched Larry hit the floor with his face during his game against the Indiana Pacers in 1991, it was obvious that he hit the floor HARD.
Sportscaster Marv Albert said he could hear the sickening"thud" from where he was sitting covering the game.
Larry gets up, then goes to the locker room where his team doctor tells him not to play anymore. He had a concussion and possible fracture of his right cheek.
NO ONE in the Boston Garden expected him to come back into that game after they saw how he was injured.
So what does he do? He sneaks out on the doctor in the third quarter.
The crowd was deafening when they saw him come back out on the floor. It was a sight to behold. Boston's SAVIOR had risen from the dead, and helped his team beat the Pacers that day in a very, very tough game.
In later Days, a reporter quoted several people who were there:
Pacer's Reggie Miller said:
"I tell people to this day, I’ve never heard a crowd, in unison, so loud for a player running out of the tunnel. We thought we had knocked him out of the game and were rolling and we were a high-octane, young team. I don’t know what they did to him. I don’t know if he got a shot. I don’t know what happened. I don’t know if he got touched by Jesus. When he ran out of that tunnel, that crowd and the noise level, it was deafening."

I simply have the utmost respect for Larry Bird's will to win! I place no one higher in that regard.
I don't have the same sort of respect for today's NBA players though, maybe because I've not seen the same sort of inspirational play, effort, and toughness that I did from Larry when he played, especially in that historic game.

Take his stats for those those 5 years (including his 3 consecutive MVP seasons) Then assume he wasnt injured and had a 20 year career like Lebron or Kobe days Or even a 15 year Career like Jordan? Bird appears in the top 10 of every single all time list . None of the other GOATS do. Think about that for a second.
