In the western movies of the fifties all the cowboy heroes had short hair and were well shaved all the time, because men were not allowed to let their hair grow long in the fifties. The authorities didn't want us to look wild. Then after the time of the hippies, we saw cowboys with long hair and beard. So, I've watched all of your videos, but maybe I just can't put it together in my head, what exactly a viking warrior would wear. Could you do a video going over that?
Knee length tunic, hose or pants, ankle length turnshoes, a cloth or leather belt about an inch wide, a wool cap or hood (see the Skjoldehamn hood), and possibly leg wraps or or strips of wool ribbon wrapped around the bottom of the pants) all of this over a linen undershirt and Braise (basically Linen shorts), wool socks or stockings (if he’s wearing breaches it would be stockings, secured in place via garter), and that would be sufficient with a spear and shield for a basic commoner to go fight, but if they had a bit more cash, he’d probably have a helmet, and if he could afford it, a chainmail shirt, probably over a padded jacket or possibly over a Klappenrock (wool winter coat), usually just above knee length, and with sleeves coming down to about elbow length
I loved how Jimmy was striving so hard for nice things to say and it just kept...getting worse lol. Though he does make a fair point, sometimes you just got to take that moment to remember it’s a fantasy game, take a deep breath, and let it go. And also, if one intends to cater to a modern “history nerd” who has access to incredible amounts of information...one should maybe...try a bit harder? If only for consistency? It’s wrong, we can tell. And if we can’t we have access to dear academics like Jimmy who can and tell us so. Ps “Fight me, but don’t. I’m tired” I laughed so hard

Come on, gotta give a tip of the horned hat to a group of Vikings who can keep their eyeliner game that strong even after a voyage across the sea! Either that or they were applying it just before raiding and it's impressive they got the lines so accurate with the waves bucking them to and fro. Also I think there should be a drink for the trope of "Shot of older Viking on a boat who then dies in battle two minutes later thus ensuring members of the audience nod sagely and feel smug that they know this means the older Viking had a Good Death [tm] because he will go to Valhalla instead of the shame of dying of old age."
The Welsh Viking You’ve got a subscriber for life here! Your passion for history and knowledge inspire me to explore and create. That along with your genuine spirit, you are in my top three TH-camrs hands-down. Skol
I wouldn't be so disappointed if it wasn't a series that boasted historical accuracy. Still gonna enjoy it as a Viking fantasy game tbh, just sucks they couldn't get basic things right.
You have a beautiful smile and hair! This is gonna sound so weird but you remind me of early seasons of Stargate Daniel Jackson for some reason? (not to 'All Archeologists/Historians Are The Same' at you or anything I've just been watching a lot of Stargate lol) I really appreciate this video though. I love the AC games and have always thought of them as people who try to be at least a little historically accurate while adding fun elements but you've helped me realize to take all their stuff with a grain of salt. I appreciate you and your videos
I was hoping you would do this game! I like to headcanon that whatever character is using the animus to relive the player character's life is "misremembering reality" or the ancestor's DNA got corrupted (or however that plot device is supposed to work) which would explain the anachronistic and fantasy elements. Would you consider analyzing the Banner Saga?
That is actually a very fascinating headcanon! I know this comment is two years old but I wanted to express my appreciation for it nonetheless :P It sucks that that was probably not what the designers went for, but if I get too enraged by the inaccuracies I'll definitely keep that in mind...
This was wonderful, I enjoyed this video immensely and nodded along rather a bit with it. I was pretty excited about the video game release but realize that the games are pretty historically inaccurate. Definitely treat it like a fantasy game, much like shows we watch on TV. I would love to hear your opinion on The Last Kingdom series! It would be fun to watch a video where you walk through it. I rather like that series. Cheers from America!
Hi Danielle, thank you so much! I actually did a Last Kingdom video a while back focussing on the Welsh, but a more general walk through it is on the cards as well for... probably before Christmas I think. Cheers right back from Edinburgh!
Note to self: if I ever play this game, drink until things get blurry enough to not be able to see all of the flaws. Or just drink instead. :-D Good times!
Seriously worried that Jimmy was going to be plastered in the first 20 seconds. Ahhhh...non-alcoholic...good choice. My hubby plays Assassins Creed, so I've seen some of it while he's been engrossed in his game. They make an interesting world, if an historically inaccurate one. Thanks for the fun breakdown on the non-viking-esque-ness of the game. Take care.
Assassins creed has a place in my heart and in my life, because it made me more interested in history, but I wish they hired actual historians to oversee the looks and everything.
Just play Mount and Blade Warband Viking Conquest. It’s a low budget game that is so much more realistic (though it isn’t perfect) and it’s also really fun. Obliterating monasteries with my warband for the craic gets really addictive
Very much enjoyed the video. Although I could not care less about AC. Just not my style, I'm less "sneak about with wrist blades" and more "boot the door down and proceed to dance towards the enemy singing this is how we do it whilst brandishing my entirely too big axe about" ... But hey the key to happiness is knowing you are a big dork and loving it anyway 🍻 cheers Jimmy another belter video
Love the rage 'dripping' off you Jimmy! I agree, the historical inaccuracies are REALLY bad (I'm a former Dark Age reenactor myself) But, I do rather like the strange "Byzantine" armour, I may look into making some for my LARP character so THANKS for pointing it out! Excellent video Cheers & Diolch!

So I was gifted this game by a mate from my re-enacting circle with a note dripping of sarcasm claiming it the best game ever and that I would surely have an "unforgettable experience" . Technically not a bad game at all. Shockingly so for a Ubi-soft release. Historically.....I often wished I had simply always been dead. Not even unborn but somehow always dead. If you think the vanilla game is painful, check out the Ireland DLC. Ironically many of the "Irish" in the DLC look more historically correct than any of the "Vikinger" in this entire game. It seems in the 9th century Ireland was at odds with a massive pagan rebellion lead by scores of druids, yes druids, who wanted to purge Ireland of the Vikings and Christianity as well. Said druids running about in Neolithic costumes of furs ,bones, Human skulls and animal skull masks with antlers. It was indeed an "Unforgettable experience".
I’ve read all of the comments and I am like HarleyQuinn62... I’ve forgotten what a historically accurate Viking would look like! (In battle and at home.)
Would love an updated video of/when you play the game! Would be interesting to hear what they got right/wrong from social, cultural, religious, etc standpoints.
Could have, a really fun idea, but unfortunately we’ve no evidence it was used that way, and the source mentions it was used to enhance beauty, so it seems likely it was just to be pretty for the ladies/gentlemen!
The only time Scandinavians wore fur is during the winter, the entire outfit of eivor's annoyed me. That is why I wore the more accurate brigandine armour set, longbow, Aella's Bardiche (Wich was used during the time), and the Briton shield, I hid the cloak though.
The fur on the Viking's shoulders is probably to be able to sort them from the Anglo-saxons in a melee, because historically speaking, they didn't look so different back them to the modern untrained eye of the average gamer. It was the same with the boats in AC Odyssey, all sails should have been undyed, but the player needs to be able to tell which is pirate, which is Athenian, which is Spartan. The Roman/Byzantine looking guys are probably Templars. As for the Stave church, it's anachronistic, but we know we want to climb that one, right? For example, in AC Unity, they did the Violet-le-Duc's spire of Notre-Dame de Paris, even though it wouldn't be build for another half of century. But isn't it satisfying to climb? Even more so now... T__T The main character looks more like a hipster cosplay, but about every main character in the series do. I like Ezio or Connor like everybody else, but their clothing are a mess. The AC series really shine in the little details of the everyday live which we can catch a glimpse here and there. Oh! They are dying with murex here! Oh! They are fixing a roof! Oh! They are building a boat! These are the games where I walk around for hours like a tourist.
My guess is that they had a consultant that they ignored for everything, except a couple of deatils where they let him or her have a bit of fun. Then back to FUR because it sells
@@Mark-hf6uf very likely. I expect they had several consultants, for different things; clothing, background, runes, etc and picked what they wanted to keep. The consultant I know about hasn't been able to say much about what he specifically was hired on to do, NDAs being what they are
Would you ever consider revisiting this and talking about how the trailers really amped up the Viking fantasy compared to the game? I’ve played the game a fair and there is a few things that have changed, especially Aelfreds design and also the characterisation of Eivor. Don’t get me wrong there is still a far bit wrong with it but I’d love to see your thoughts after playing (if you have that is 😀)
Yes! It's actually in the works but I'm a bit of a Luddite so the tech side is taking me time to work out. Game'll be a classic by the time I'm done with the editing!
Take a drink whenever you see something wrong. I'm reminded of that episode of Fraiser where he, his dad and his brother were watching the Antiques Roadshow. Every time someone said veneer they all took a drink. They were plastered by the end. 🤣
Just started watching, and I'm guessing you will be hammered by the end. 7 minutes in and I hope you have more beer. Kite shields not on horseback... no. He's not a centurion, just a trooper, that crest isn't a centurion crest. But yeah, why is he there. So how much did they pay Travis Fimmel for the rights to his Ragnar look. Sadly UBIsoft is only interested in popular Larp looks, not accuracy.
I’m excited for the game, regardless of accuracy...please don’t stone me mate! Haha! Have you seen the Greek AC? Odyssey? Amazing! Black Flag is my favorite AC game so far though.
Lady Eryn Galloway I really enjoyed the Ezio trilogy! I can’t do Black Flag, Rogue, etc. because of the ship/boats and the fact that it makes me insanely motion sick. *le sigh*
I know they didn’t wear Black Eyeshadow on their eyes as far as we know, but I could see people coming from an area dominated by snow wearing the blacked out eyes when fighting in a snowy area to protect their eyes from the glare much the same way that baseball and football players wear black under their eyes
From that description I wonder if the makeup could be some kind of kohl/eyeliner since it seems to be a pattern of makeup that appeared across many cultures (for all genders) and objectively makes people more beautiful by enhancing the eyes. But I guess if that was the case it isn't BADASS enough as the streaks of coal lol
They add a reference to the mari lwyd where s/he just puts on a furry capelet, with a horses skull pushed into the front of the hood... but they have it at samhain, and in Gloucester. Sorry, Glowecestre.
Here's what gets me: the game director said they didn't include proper one handed swords because those would play too similarly to the one handed axes. But they let you use two handed swords from like... the 14th or 15th century. Maybe even the 16th? Vikings are known for two things: ONE HANDED SWORDS AND TWO HANDED AXES. What do they do in the game? Give you ONE HANDED AXES AND TWO HANDED SWORDS. Yes, I am aware that vikings also used one handed axes a lot. But, the game director said that they wanted to include the iconic viking axes. And you could easily do that with two handed axes instead!
I personally love the makeup, but it is a great thing to be informed that it is fantasy. I take a few fantastical liberties but I try to stay close to on brand with clothes in my reenactments.
I loved watching Overly Sarcastic Productions’ video on this too! Blue is a little more focused on the architecture, but had a bunch of the same complaints!
these reasons are also why I am not very interested in this game, or the past two for that matter. not only has their lore gone to shit, but the attention to details and historical accuracy has aswell. Sure, no AC game is 100% historically accurate, but with Valhalla, its like they didnt even try.
Yeah, it’s a bit disappointing. The first two will always be absolute classics, but...I dunno, it feels a bit like they just phoned it in on the historical stuff for the later games
@@TheWelshViking well, what i was mainly referring to are things like in AC3(american revolution), where Connor wears a modified general tailcoat as his Assadsin Garb, it fits the time period, and has a sense of "Assassin" to it, same with Arno in the French Revolution. He wears alot of clothing, but his outermost cloak is actually a Reddinggoat, which was used around that time period for hunting activities, which means it is durable, can take the wear and tear of running and rolling, and also, if you notice the small detail on Arnos Lapel, there are buttons which attach the hood, which adds the Assassin vibes. Examples like that pull you into the historical realm, and also give major Assassin vibes Then you look at valhalla, and Evior is wearing leather, and fur on the outside, which makes me think they used Skyrim as a reference instead of historical books. Ofcourse this series isnt 100% perfect, but it atleast used to give a damn

Honestly... For a Videogame they can't even blame making realistic armor being expensive as an excuse for shammy leathers sewn together to be characters armor...
That was hilarious! It would be more understandable if it was live action but, as a digital medium, they have no excuse to skimp on the details...especially since they have prided themselves on consulting experts in their GDC talks previously. Details are also important for the cosplayers who will replicate these costumes later on. It would actually be interesting to see fixed versions, of various inaccurate Viking portrayals, that would keep the original design's general aesthetic but make it historically accurate.
Thanks for this video, I had great fun watching you getting frustrated 😂 you confirmed what I very much suspected while watching the trailer when it came out. My personal interest kind of starts with the rococo era, but even I was very much confused with that Roman dude. Lol. Does it change my deep love of the ac games? No. I played all of them, I enjoyed all of them, some more (ezio ❤️) some way less (origins is my least favorite, really wtf ubisoft?) Will this be historical accurate? Nope. Will it let me murder people as a Viking, have a raven friend and build my own fucking Viking settlement? Yep. I am so ready for this 🤩
Watching this well after the game has been released and I've played it is so gratifying. Like I enjoy the game immensely, but I can't help but just internally roll my eyes and gag at SO MUCH. I don't even know that much about the viking era! But it's so painfully obvious they fully leaned into the dude-bro aesthetic over actual accuracy basically everywhere
Not sure if it has been asked, but could it be possible to look at other Viking or historical costumes in other videogames like Elder Scrolls Skyrim or Banner Sagas, maybe Valheim. Obviously they're is meant to be more fantastical but it be interesting to see someone analyze them to see how realistic or just how fantastical it is.
I would like to see what would you think about vinland saga anime, but I don't know if you into anime stuff, it got alot of good stuff and some problems but not as much as games and movies, you may like to take a look
To be fair, the Roman centurion IS a pure fantasy character within the context of the game itself. He's supposed to be one of the templar agents, for whom, considering that in AC it's a super-secret-techno-magical organization, it makes sense to look fantasy-esque and out of place. In short, yes, it's completely made up, but it's supposed to be that
I have so many mixed feelings about this game. When I got it, I was stoked because AC:Odyssey is shockingly accurate to ancient Greece. When I got into the game itself it was okay, the boats were good and the flyting mechanic is a blast, but then I saw a Gothic cathedral when it was stated to take place in the 840s. Still, the game is fun and has a good feel to it if you just look at it as pure fantasy like the Vikings show or even LOTR or Game of Thrones. The devs said they didn't pick a set time, they just wanted to give the player a viking-flavored power trip, which...I mean they succeeded, I'll give them that. Besides, there's an entire subset of missions that deals with glitches in the Animus so its kind of hard to forget its all weird sci-fi fakeness anyways. Still enjoy the game, but definitely disappointed.
I think they just want to do what they think is cool or what they think their audience expects. Like if there weren't those boots someone might complain? They would be wrong but they would still complain.
Clearly, the centurian fellow is another historical reenactor.

Jimmy is unimpressed.
Just looked up Stave Churches - they're gorgeous.
Stave churches are one of my favourites, enough that I never get tired of building them in Minecraft. Them and Gothic churches.
@@MrsBifflechips So patient! That's really cool :D
So beautiful! Norse Christianity made some amazing art and architecure.
Ya did not plan enough drink on hand, you could have guessed it would need two cans!! LOL
It’s very inaccurate! But oh so funnbb
Let’s all join Jimmy in his Viking Drinking Game. 😂
Do it, do it, do it!
Can't stop watching your videos. I'm a Nordic Polytheist and can't stop laughing at all the nonsense and wrong portrayal of old norse people on tv and videogames. Nice costume tips for reenacting btw! I suscribe, of course! I love the way you explain things
SKJALDEN is back! Jimmy and Skjalden for doses of Viking reality. I'll take mine with Vodka, thank you, not disembodied Pale Ale.
I will certainly drink to that! Make mine mead. Here's to Jimmy and Skjalden!
SKÖL! *everyone gets wrecked looking at Bad Vikings*
Love this video! And when you mentioned Shad, I went crazy!!!
Haha! He does good things!
Really enjoying your videos about viking clothing and those reviews! Im doing research about viking era clothes and all the misinformation about it around internet really confuses me... Thanks for the content ✨
Спасибо!
Amazing! Imagine putting your slap on in the longboat without a mirror! XD
Indeed. We must not mourn because he is now with the One Eyed Spear Lord!

Oh yeah, it looks like a really good, fun game. But historically? Very sub-par.
It was irksome all the things that were obviously wrong, but is it bad enough to stop me playing. No 😅
You have a beautiful smile and hair!
Finally think I'm able to get through this without frothing at the mouth, I'm a little sedated this evening..
If this was set in Iceland and a bit later, the criss cross boot straps would be accurate
Best review of this game I’ve seen
You should have gotten a bigger can of Ale, this was so funny. Thanks, I needed a laugh.
Glad it helped, Jackie. I should have just opened a nice bottle of mead!
Hell yes I would! That's a great idea!
I like that as a mechanic for forgiving the inaccuracies. I'll use that one to calm myself down!
That is actually a very fascinating headcanon! I know this comment is two years old but I wanted to express my appreciation for it nonetheless :P It sucks that that was probably not what the designers went for, but if I get too enraged by the inaccuracies I'll definitely keep that in mind...
Alfred baby, what are you wearing let's have a look at you! 😂😂 had me dead

Hahaha! Wait until I start doing film essays à la Lindsey Ellis
@@TheWelshViking Wow. You're a Lindsey Ellis fan, and you use the proper French "à" instead of "a".

Take care.
At least there are no horned helmets
Base level success. We can build from there!
Assassins creed has a place in my heart and in my life, because it made me more interested in history, but I wish they hired actual historians to oversee the looks and everything.
Now imagining how ranty you would have got if drinking mead rather than non-alcoholic beer! (Meanwhile I'm drinking half-caf coffee, as 4:30pm!)
Super ranty, then super sleepy!
Every bloody character looks like Pro Wrestler Lance Archer.
Just play Mount and Blade Warband Viking Conquest. It’s a low budget game that is so much more realistic (though it isn’t perfect) and it’s also really fun. Obliterating monasteries with my warband for the craic gets really addictive
ooo sounds fun
blktauna the graphics aren’t so good but it’s still really fun
Very much enjoyed the video. Although I could not care less about AC. Just not my style, I'm less "sneak about with wrist blades" and more "boot the door down and proceed to dance towards the enemy singing this is how we do it whilst brandishing my entirely too big axe about" ... But hey the key to happiness is knowing you are a big dork and loving it anyway 🍻 cheers Jimmy another belter video
As a 7ft tall nutcase I take offence at the implication I can't sneak around
WHO THE HELL SAID THAT?!
@@TheWelshViking GORDON'S ALIIIIIIIIVE?
Love the rage 'dripping' off you Jimmy! I agree, the historical inaccuracies are REALLY bad (I'm a former Dark Age reenactor myself) But, I do rather like the strange "Byzantine" armour, I may look into making some for my LARP character so THANKS for pointing it out! Excellent video Cheers & Diolch!
I really don't want to know the kind of mesurments and work that would need to go into making the stompy big fur fantasy boots, I have a hard enough time trying to make turn shoes
Take one wolf. Insert foot. Regret everything.
honestly the thing that confusede most in the video was that glass, how do you put it down?? does it have a base??? do you hang it on the wall like some weird sconce???
Haha! I’ll have to just refresh everyone’s memories! :D
Would love an updated video of/when you play the game! Would be interesting to hear what they got right/wrong from social, cultural, religious, etc standpoints.
The dark eye makeup you mentioned sounds like it could have been dark eyeliner to help with sun glare the way cheetahs have black tear marks.
The main character looks more like a hipster cosplay, but about every main character in the series do.
I wonder if they have considered hiring actual historians to consult in the design process. One should either be historic or not be historic. Sigh.
They did have a consultant for at least some part of it, though no word on how much of that consultants information was used.
The consultant I know about hasn't been able to say much about what he specifically was hired on to do, NDAs being what they are
angelique Have you seen Karelian Zebrowska’s video about this? It’s called “period drama costume designers these days” and it’s hilarious!
@@TysMommy609 Vintagebursche's take on the subject is nice too
Would you ever consider revisiting this and talking about how the trailers really amped up the Viking fantasy compared to the game? I’ve played the game a fair and there is a few things that have changed, especially Aelfreds design and also the characterisation of Eivor. Don’t get me wrong there is still a far bit wrong with it but I’d love to see your thoughts after playing (if you have that is 😀)
Yes! It's actually in the works but I'm a bit of a Luddite so the tech side is taking me time to work out. Game'll be a classic by the time I'm done with the editing!
Of course Alfred is wearing thick leather gloves, those quills are sharp!
Take a drink whenever you see something wrong.
I'm reminded of that episode of Fraiser where he, his dad and his brother were watching the Antiques Roadshow. Every time someone said veneer they all took a drink.
They were plastered by the end. 🤣
Shwmae, I've been looking forward to this ever since I saw the trailer, those are definitely some inaccurate GoT/history channel looking rapscallions
Its a game. If i want history, i look to historical sources. Games are entertainment, hence the word game
*le sigh*
It's baffling to me that The Northman made a better Assassin's Creed story than the actual Assassin's Creed game
Obviously these fantasy!Vikings went to fantasy!Ikea for a sheepskin rug/cloak. As one does.
I enjoy the Assassins Creed games, but to me they're fantasy games with great architecture
They add a reference to the mari lwyd where s/he just puts on a furry capelet, with a horses skull pushed into the front of the hood... but they have it at samhain, and in Gloucester.
Sorry, Glowecestre.
Jimmy simply doesn’t look like he would know the things he does. Good cover.
Never touched any of those games but fun rant, learned some new things and Hidden-Blade-Dude's pretty fit
I mean, I would.
@@TheWelshViking if I wasn't asexual. And made of meat.
I personally love the makeup, but it is a great thing to be informed that it is fantasy. I take a few fantastical liberties but I try to stay close to on brand with clothes in my reenactments.
Another one I sent to my daughter who was literally born & raised in the SCA and plays this game.
Examples like that pull you into the historical realm, and also give major Assassin vibes
Then you look at valhalla, and Evior is wearing leather, and fur on the outside, which makes me think they used Skyrim as a reference instead of historical books. Ofcourse this series isnt 100% perfect, but it atleast used to give a damn
Viking Clothing: Worthy of loathing
Shields: Lafn at that hrafn also wrong shape
Ships: Shippy enough
Son of Alfred the Great: Timeline of not the great
Ante-"BELLUM!!!" vellum: oh well, um
Viking's hair: Donkey's rear
Beard ring: Weird thing
Anti-personnel fire arrows: I personally would not fire those arrows
Roman Centurion, several centuries on?
Flail: Not a pole flail, 0/10
Overall: As usual/10
Right? It would have taken so little money and effort to just do a bit of basic research. To quote The Internet c.2008, “Le sigh”.
Yep. I am so ready for this 🤩
It does absolutely look like it’ll be heaps of fun! I’m looking forward to my raven fren!
It's a good thing Jimmy went with nonalcoholic for this, otherwise he'd be trashed. Great review.
I just looked it up, the developer states the game takes place in 873AD.
I'm always using different cheers. Opa, salud, cheers, prost... What does skol mean?
Cheers or just a salute, I think.
True true, there’s no winning in the court of opinion!
At least the centurion's armor actually worked against slashes tho!!
There's a Roman centerian here cause Rory was guarding Amy in the pandorica and got bored duh! It makes a much sense as any of the costuming
Bro, there’s a piece of armor where do dude is legit wearing a raccoon skeleton on his shoulder lmao
Jimmyyy, would you revisit this with all the game content now available? We're going to at least have a DLC in Paris, so that will be fUN???
