Is VINLAND SAGA Historically Accurate? Review and Restyling a Viking Anime Classic!

- It's finally happened! After literally months of you wonderful internet people asking in the comments, I'm looking at the hit anime series Vinland Saga like the little Welsh weeb I am! We'll check out the clothes, buildings, weapons, longships, cattle, and more from this shonen classic for accuracy, and see if we can give a few of the main characters new, historically accurate outfits that any Viking or Anglo-Saxon re-enactor would be proud to wear!
Especially if you're portraying King Cnut. I mean... dang.

Actually, in the manga thorfinn calls out how weird askeladd armour is before he watched his dad fight him. It’s pretty cool how the author used that as an excuse to give him that armour because it works lol.
He says that in the sub too.
"Your armor looks stupid" if I remember correctly.
I don't know if you still care about this, but Thorfinn mentions that also in the anime, and there is a very good reason why he finds Askeladd's armor weird. Askeladd spent a lot of time in the south (presumably Greece, Italy or Byzantine Empire) and that's where he got the armor.
LOOOVE Vinland Saga! the author and artist, Makoto Yukimura, this man is so detail oriented he literally TRAVELS to the location to study the history and culture.
I remember that the first time he went to Iceland he didnt catch the aurora cause after all nights waiting it only appeard when he went to a lunh break with his wife.

Yeah, too bad he, as all Japanese authors and most western authors, has no idea of what the mentality of the people of that age was.
That "transformation" that King Cnut goes through and makes him basically an atheist/nihilist is something absolutely retarded, filled with concepts that wouldn't even cross the mind of a medieval person, especially because they weren't even invented at the time, and especially the mind of a christian, given what Christianity was back then.
Also, it falls into that stupid trope of Christians being weak and timid and cowardice while the pagans being all brave and warrior like. No, every culture back then was all about war.
Anyway, these misconceptions only arise because the authors impose a modern view of christianity, a protestant, pacifist understanding of Christianity that is 100 or 200 years old at most, on a historical setting that has nothing to do with it.
Askeladd is wearing Roman style lorica musculata. He also wears a toga, which indicates that he's a bit of a Roman weeb.
The author seems pretty aware that these don't match the time/region of the story because young Thorfinn even makes a comment about it, saying "your armor looks stupid" in Ep5.
Askeladd uses brcause of his conection to Britania, which is the Roman version of Britain. Hes not a 'weeb'. Hes honoring his roots.
indicating both either he's a romanwannabe or.. he is related to roman. that lies to the audience to choose what they want to think.
and in later episodes, the story tells you about that

If an US citizen whose great-grandfathers came from Scotland and that's all the cultural ties they have to the country wears tartan on the reg and calls themselves Scottish, they're being a Scottaboo. Same for Rome here.
I do remember when the manga dipped over the border into Wales for a bit, and it’s hard to desribe the feeling when you see that he just nailed the landscape and terrain so perfectly. I have walked the rugged slopes that were drawn in those manga panels all my life, and I there’s no other way to describe it other than I feel seen by this mangaka.
That's bc Makoto Yukimura have been to all the locations of his manga, so he knows how it looks like. His dedication to detail and be as historical authentic as possible, is staggering. There are some minor details, that are a bit modernized, but other than that, one of, if not THE best depiction of Northern medieval Europe and society at the time.
Yeaa it's perfect! I live in the rural part of Wales and they got the landscapes very accurately :D

Congrats on the sponsorship! I don't understand why film and tv studios are so afraid of colour and insist that the past was so drab and gloomy.
I think its blame the 60's and late 90's? When colour became more of a thing, especially on tv, it *exploded* into use, kinda like how for a while every film was 3D. Later on as a counter you got things being dark to looked different, but this was also when they were being serious ad moody.
The end result is now everything is because drab colours = 'mature' and bright and colourful = 'dated'. We're finally starting to see *something* of a turnaround but tis slow and painful
They need a coherent color scheme that photographs well with no big adjustments. A drab production design is lighting and camera friendly. It’s cheap to create and easy to keep going across a series.
Media is a manufactured product. Somebody sits at a desk and figures out the production design based on uniformity so the camera crew knows exactly what they’re getting. It’s a factory.
@@elizabethclaiborne6461 I obviously don't work in film and I know very little about set design or the cost or ease of filming, editing, colour correction and grading lol. But I do know that colour is often used to establish mood and I suppose my objection is that as a consumer I'm led to believe the the past was always miserable and cold and wet and muddy. That historical equals squalid and brutal and the only dye available was dung brown. It feels lazy and unoriginal and boring.
Honestly, I sometimes wonder if people are being subconsciously influenced by b+w sepia photography and photographs into thinking the whole of the past was all monochromatic! 🤦🏻♀️ But yeah, I think the decision to put anyone except the royals in undyed leather & grime must have originally been that postmodern obsession with over-obvious "grittiness"... 🙄 and now it's just an endless case of new productions' design copying off earlier ones!
Personally, I think it could be more confrontative and shocking to mark the contrast between the bright colours of the past and the often-horrifying events (public hanging entertainment events anyone??)

Tall boots look great, that makes it hard for modern animators to go with a lot of historical footwear styles. Modern people expect tough characters to have big boots, and as modern people the animators probably feel that too.

There are also a lot of shorter boots shown later on in the show, towards thorkell's second fight with thorfinn. Main characters get an exception tho
It was my understanding that Askeladd's wasn't a "muscle-shaped leather armor" but rather a roman-style steel breastplate? You can tell from the episode prior to the Thorkell-Thorfinn duel, when Askeladd gets struck with an axe on the back and his armor rings with a strong metallic clang. Obviously still a ridiculous choice of armor from a historical standpoint but still better than a muscle shaped leather cuirass I'd say hahaha
I'd allways tought that it could make sense that he got it from the welsh as some kind of "relic". Cause if i remember correctly, that welsh chief that he knows that came with the trirreme style ships also has this roman armor.
And yeah its totally metalic. I mean yeah its not historical but fits in the myth of "we preserve some of the spirit of the romans" and the "you as an important welsh can use this armor".
There are some depictions of Franks and Byzantines wearing muscle cuirasses from around this time....maybe a little earlier. But hey, even if those were drawn as some kind of anachronistic Roman fantasy, personally it gives me an acceptable chunk of creative leeway
@@mushmozz5413 Depictions yes and they look rather cool. The frankish ones are most likley historical stylization though and were likley not used by the Franks.

Same! When we watched it in anime club THE SECOND that guy first appeared on the screen I immediately squawked, "WHERE'D THIS GUY FIND A ROMAN CUIRASS?! Those are centuries out of date!" while the history majors nodded in agreement. Eventually we collectively concluded that - weirdo that he is - he probably found it somewhere while raiding and just decided to wear it anyway out of date or not...

Never even heard about this Anime, But Love thet they have a caracter named Askeladd. The Askeladd is a caracter from Many Norwegian Fairytales *S* He's the 'Third not valued son who wins the Princess and half the Kingdom' Always smarter then the rest of his brothers who 'always' are greedy, and don't want to work for their 'profit' *S*

For vinland saga to get the clothes right more than the vikings series is already something. Really love this series. Am impressed with how the author tied up actual historical events and characters to make a compelling drama. Thats love.
I got into Vinland Saga, the manga and the anime, through my 15-year-old daughter. When I let her know you had posted this video, she was so excited. Her first question was whether VS got your stamp of approval. Wish you could have seen how thrilled she was that you were a fan of VS.

In order to symbolize Askeladd's Romano-Briton heritage they could have given him a late Roman ridge helm or a spatha, think that could have done it better. I still love the hell out of Vinland Saga.
That'd make his background way too obvious from the beginning, considering the reveal about his Roman ancestry (and from a rather theoritically famous one) is a big one.
But i agree with giving him a Spatha since all that need to be done in the design is slightly shortening the blade and changing the guard to a semicircle. That'd make a good extra clue for the more historically inclined peoples out there.

This is why I was disappointed when Skallagrim didn't show interest in giving the anime a proper watch, since there is a lot of good attempts by the author and the art department when it comes to bringing this time period to life.
Yes it is not perfect... but it's really good! Like you said, miles better than Vikings.

@@giulyanoviniciussanssilva2947 Also, none of the "superpowers" in the manga or the anime are all that farfetched when it comes to the actual sagas. I believe Thorkell's "throwing a spear like 2km and having it impale 4 guys" is based on something that happened in one of the sagas. Askeladd cutting someone in half vertically through the helmet is also something that happens several times throughout the sagas and eddas, as is log-throwing. The "prologue" (aka the entire first season, or 56 chapters) is I feel meant to embody the experience of reading the sagas, whereas later on when we get into Farmland Saga and the War Arc it gets a lot more serious

Loved the Vinland Sagas. I watched it after hearing you mention it in one of your videos. Then I watched it again with my 4 kids who are all big anime fans and they loved it too, (even though it is full of the Viking and Celtic stuff dad's into). Very fond memories for me watching with the kids and I was always impressed by the little details they got right.
When you said you had the complete manga on your shelf, I was half expecting the camera to pan over to show them, lol.
Speaking of reviewing fantasy ‘vikings’, how about doing a review of the costuming for the Rohirrim in the LotR films? Obviously they’re not actual vikings, but they do draw upon the Anglo-Saxons of the Viking Period for inspiration.
You mentioned The Last Kingdom a couple of times; out of interest have you read the books on which it’s based, or just watched the tv series?
It's been ages since I've read Vinland Saga, but I distinctly remember being surprised at how natural the clothing looked, and that was before I was even remotely interested in history! Sure, some things are silly, but I'm still in awe at how much the author tried their best with creating a landscape that instantly makes sense.

Depends on where you were. Dye plants varied a great deal, and there were also commonly imported dyestuffs (usually expensive). Colours tho could be anything….natural dyes can be any colour under the sun. It would follow that people would wear colours that they had the wherewithal to easily create, but, showing off has always been a thing, so brighter imported colours were always popular with thems as could afford em ;). The thing with natural dyes is that they don’t “tend” to be as saturated in hue as we are used to(having said that, some are as intense as anything we produce today) and they tend to fade softly, hence I suspect, this idea that the past was kinda watercoloured and monochromatic. People could re dye clothing tho and I’ll bet they did.
This has convinced me to give Vinland Saga a watch, nice to see so much care go into the depiction of material culture. I do need to watch more anime.
It used to be fashionable among art snobs to denigrate anime. I did. I am sorry. In my secret heart I loved the grace, polish, and fun. I am coming out - to a world that does not care - as a lover of anime style. :)

Loved the video Jimmy. Would you ever do another video about Vinland Saga? I'm curious about what you think about the Welsh representation and how they're kinda *cough cough* roman.
Also, a lil note about your version of Thorfinn's outfit. You tried to tie to a typical norse/sami style hood and that he was the son of a high standing man. But this outfit, that we see Thorfinn in for most of the Prologue, is a set of clothes he got from an old English peasant woman in ch 17 (ep 6 in the anime iirc).
I think so! It's big enough for several, considering a short overview of s1 was nearly half an hour long!
I've been looking forward to this video! One reason I gravitate towards anime is that relatively few people work on them, especially adaptations of manga. Even in a hugely popular series like Vinland Saga one person's passion, vision, and research can absolutely shine through, compared to Hollywood movies where things get focus-groupped out to fit established ideas or important details lost in the long chains of command. Yukimura absolutely did his research, and you can TELL!

Obviously some of the boots aren't accurate because they're pretty tall but they didn't go over the top with the designs like some *cough* Vikings and the Last Kingdom *cough* and we do get some pretty good shots of turn shoes and the like and the boots in the manga are better in design. Even some of the more creative decisions they made still seem pretty grounded enough.
Canute's helmet did have some solid reasoning, he's nobility so you'd want him to be recognizable. It's not practical for combat but Canute wasn't much of a fighter anyway and I imagine his servant Ragnar (Would he be a Hirdman?) fully intended on keeping him out of that position. Which could also explain some of the more humble aspects of his design at first, because Canute didn't want to be a prince he would've been completely happy living life as a Karl with Ragnar as his father.
Like I loved how Thors's tunic was tied off at the sleeve hem in the anime. I know you mocked them a bit as tassels but I think it's wholly plausible that sometimes they would've occasionally hemmed a tunic like that by cutting it into tassels and tying them off.
And of course the Longships... oh the longships... what I consider the truest symbol of the Viking age and Norse culture... and they designed them beautifully! You can see how the planks overlap in the signature clinker style of Scandinavian ships. Just *chefs kiss*
Now for Askeladd's armor, that isn't leather it is blackened metal, in one scene in the manga he gets hit with a weapon and the cuirass he's wearing repels it. So it's not leather it's just blackened iron or steel.
Now as for critique of them carrying longships across land, I certainly think that's very plausible, the longhips did have a very shallow draft and were comparatively light weight thanks to their construction so in a pinch I imagine they very well could be carried by a full crew overland. And it works with Askeladd's mad-ash-lad style of strategy.

Lil edit on my thoughts after the video - my personal take is realism is great and I love seeing well researched elements to things but some character once said "every good story deserves a little embellishment" .. Gandalf maybe? So yeah that's my take. Get it close while giving a little oomph along the way 😁

For ashellad's armor they were trying to make an allusion to his roman heritage so I'm for it personally. Maybe he got it from Italy somehow?
I'm not sure how my mind got here, but hearing about this series suddenly makes me want to see a big, anime remake of "Alexander Nevsky," done with the same or greater attention to detail.
Listening to you describe your redesign on Askeladd's tall boots and I had a flashback to a previous video where you described this style (or something similar with multiple toggles) only being found in situ as a toddler's shoe despite being a common cosplay/reenactor go-to for big tough warrior-type men.... Seems fitting dichotomy for such a character.
Recently watched your videos on Arthur (which I love btw) concurrent to me watching Vinland Saga and when they mentioned Arthur being a Welsh sub-Roman war general on Mount Badon, I just knew I had to see your take on this show bc if they can get that right, they probably got so many other things right.
Good to see your take on their costumes bc my untrained eye literally thought the costuming (aside from Askelad obviously) was on point.

Speaking of historical accuracy:
1) TEMPL swords makes wonderful sword replicas of the era with a lot of bling. It gives you a nice impression of how they once must have looked like...
2) It's not the first time that anime puts a lot of effort into historical accuracy. The anime Monster for instance depicts both history and setting extraordinarily well. So much so, that I can recognize the places, with such accuracy that I'm sure that the producers must have had people coming to Europe to do research.
3) I have no problem with Askeladd's breastplate. He's a fanboy of the Romans. Romans did have some breastplates like this for generals. It would not be impossible that he wore an antique armor. If it's a reproduction made of steel, then I bet that only a few smiths in all of Europe were capable of forging it with the correct heat treatment at the time. Lacquered bronze would be certainly another possibility, but that would be less protective. Lacquered leather would be possible, but from what I know it would be unlikely for the time and place. AFAIK, leather was mostly used for boots and arm protection. Also, I'm not 100% how they lacquered things back then, as the lacquer is derived from the Asian camphor tree and linseed oil doesn't stick to metal. In any case, a longer chainmail underneath his breastplate would definitely make sense...

To be fair to Thors (sp?) tunic, the tassles could be fringing which I've seen (admittedly usually on lower hems) evidence for in Irish Sea contexts. So it's not the weirdest thing on the outfit.

I had assumed Askeladd's breast plate was blackened with acid, similar to the iconic Schwarze Reiter cavalry.
Looks so much better than the big budget live action travesties. Will definitely be seeking this out. Not a suggestion for a video, but just for your own (hopefully) enjoyment and entertainment is Ragnorok - The Norwegian/Danish co-production on Netflix (not the Marvel Thor film). I was surprised by the things they snuck in - lots of fun. Dubbed version is surprisingly good although as usual subtitles are better.
Great video Jimmy! While not exactly related, do you know some good sources for information on Welsh and Irish clothing from around this period? I tried looking myself, but Google kept redirecting me to Anglo-Saxon stuff...I'm especially interested in the 'short tunics' you mentioned, as I've been trying to design a general clothing look for some characters that live in bogs in my fantasy setting, and I figured they'd probably opt for shorter clothing since they have to wade pretty often, and it'd be simpler than trying to roll or tie up their clothes all the time. Currently I've just been giving them mini-skirt versions of fairly standard medieval clothing, but it'd be nice to have a more historical reference as well.
I remember looking into an old manga from before the internet whose title escapes me, but it was vaguely medieval in setting, and it VERY obviously was using post cards from Bremen to model the town square. Including the prominent statue of Roland, which was an immediate giveaway even beyond the distinctive town hall.

When I watched that show last year, I really wanted to see a reaction from a Dane, or at least someone who would be familiar with the settings of the era. You scratched that itch quite nicely for me.
I once saw a video recommended to me of a guy saying he was "responding to The Welsh Viking" and i clicked on it thinking it was an analysis on or breakdown on how realistic Askeladd was, the Welsh Viking in Vinland saga. It wasn’t, turned out there hyper coincidentally happened to be some guy on youtube whose channel name just so happened to be a perfect description of Askeladd!
So when I saw this recommended to me I was incredibly excited to learn if his name came from the character, but somehow this doesnt seem to he brough up in this video.
So I absolutely MUST know, is that where you got your name or is it just a MASSIVE coincidence, and if it is, how much did you FREAK THE ABSOLUTE FUKC out when you first encountered Askeladd the Welsh Viking, The Welsh Viking?

Some of the images you've shown of good representations of villages remind me strongly of Norsemen (Netflix) which got me to wondering whether you've already considered the accuracy there in detail (did note the passing snark). Can't find such a video, but may be rubbish at looking.

I first saw this anime a month ago and I’m already rewatching it. It’s fantastic and it’s good to see a decent level of accuracy in a Norse setting.
I have to be honest, the only knowledge of this show I had was the random mentions in your previous videos. I really thought it was more Like Vikings (etc) but this? I might have to check this out.
