The ship as a workplace is an all-encompassing environment for seafarers, who work, sleep and spend their free time in the same location, the ship. Food is not only essential in their daily lives but also plays an important role
in their overall wellbeing.
One thing I have leant and come to understand and believe from my personal experience is how important good food is onboard ship to the general well being of the crew, both physically and psychologically, which in turn leads to the efficient and safe running of the vessel and that is in no way possible without Ship's Cook or Galley Department who is responsible for
keeping the crew well fed and fueled with enough energy to carry out their strenuous and often physically demanding jobs. Let's have a look into Ship's Cook life onboard with this short documentary .

Thank you for this documentary of a cooks duties on a ship. I am a ship cook and I love the Job. Having worked in the restaurant industry for many years, I find cooking on the ship much more rewarding and inspirational. We, as cooks truly make an impact in regards to the health and mental health of our shipmates. Truly a tough job and very rewarding.

I had been on an old coast guard boat for 30 a day trip collecting and testing water along 4 of the 5 Great Lakes with various government agencies: EPA, NOAH, and the U of Michigan. I really had to embrace the seafaring lifestyle! The highlight of each day was seeing and eating the meals the ships cook prepared. Amazing! You cannot underestimate the value of a ships chef!

Is it possible, in terms of logistics, work organization and stock, for the crew to order dishes like one does in a restaurant?
Not possible … There is a set menu onboard and on special occasions we have some exotic 🍱

It’s 8-10 hours
That's great, I asked because cooks isn the navy are often over worked, sometimes working 16 hours a day...while working at a flat rate pay...
Chief 👨🍳hardest job on ship there’s 20/30 chefs on the ship and they put the worse ones in the galley 🤣🤣🤣 I’ve been going to sea for 44 years since 78 working in the galley all my life ❤️ my job at 🌊🌊🏴☠️🏴☠️
