How I set up my GoPro 3 as a dash cam

  • This is a simple instructional video on how I set up my own Dash Cam in my car using a GoPro 3 (white version) There are other options for a dash cam that aren't GoPro 3 but since I do have a couple GoPro 3 Cameras, I figured why buy a dedicated Dash Cam when the GoPro 3 works fine. It only requires one adhesive mount to be dedicated to the windshield. The rest of the GoPro 3 can be used as you normally would when you are done using it as a Dash Cam.

    I also use a Hero3 White as a dashcam from time to time. I use the section cup mount behind the mirror. I also use "The Frame" instead of the waterproof. My 2012 Tacoma came with a USB port, hence no adapter.

    If you choose to use your Hero4 camera as a dashcam (why not, if you already own it right?), CamDo offers a dash cam controller to use the GoPro as a dash cam. It automatically turns the camera on and starts recording when the car starts up, and automatically stops recording and shuts down the camera when the car turns off (with a configurable run-on time). Has worked well for me and I'm getting much better value out of my GoPro now!

      What about the battery?

    Thanks for the video. I have tried a few incarnations of GoPro car cams. Recently bought a cheap third party mount (video on my channel) that has a ball and will swivel so you can aim it where you want. You just have to make sure the thumbscrews clear the mirror. It's not as discrete as yours though. One thing I noticed with cameras inside the car (as you can see in your video) is when the sun is behind you the video is pretty great but when it's in front of you, you get the reflection of the dash in it and it kinda takes away from the video.

    What case are you using that allows you to plug in the power cable for the camera?

    I have the Hero 4 and its great. I also have 3 Lukas 7200 dash cam for three vehicles. Filming when driving is actually a great idea. It has already helped me out in one a traffic collision which was not my fault.

    Very interesting video. I plan on using on my car. I want to use with a larger 64gb or 128gb card to give me maximum video length. Today's society demands this type of safety net with all the traffic today especially during an accident. Then in the spring & summer to use it for when we kayak.

    I was using my GoPro as a dash cam on my daily truck for a while, but I found it a hassle to keep rotating the screen everytime I switched to my Offroad truck. So, I just picked up a $40 dashcam from Walmart for my daily driver.

    No reason to run wifi for dashcam. Get a open plastic housing instead of the solid housing.

    Great video. With all this talk of police body cams and drone surveillance I wonder when everyone is going to basically have everything on video. Either for good or bad purposes, video proof is becoming a huge part of life.

    THIS IS SUCH A INFORMATIVE VIDEO, THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS.
    ONE QUESTION I HAVE PLEASE:
    I am using my gopro 3+ black edition as CCTV camera, i am keeping my camera continuously turned ON and recording in 20 minutes loop mode at 1080p at 30 FPS for atleast 24 hours straight in a day. 5 days a week,
    This was my need and gopro is doing awesome job. i needed something portable.
    it is performing great. no issues at all so far. I have mains power socket just next to the location where i need my gopro, so I am powering the camera straight from the Mains Wall Socket.
    MY CONCERN IS, THE LIFE OF GOPRO ITSELF... NOT THE BATTERY. WILL THIS DAMAGE MY GOPRO? I,E, LIFE OF THE GOPRO ITSELF GOING TO BE SHORTEN BY USING IT AS CCTV CAMERA AND RECORDING IT CONTINUOUSLY IN 20 MINUTES LOOP MODE?
    IT GETS HOT, BUT NOT ABNORMALLY HOT.

    This is a pretty stupid question but is the cam upside down when it is mounted on the windshield?

    • @colinnoel4289
      @colinnoel4289 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes -- if you go into settings on the camera you can change the orientation so even if its upside down the camera will record it right side up. if you forget to change this, you can always do it on your computer after the fact.

    Are you still using it as a dash cam? I think they’re underrated for that purpose. They offer great quality pictures and sounds. Only problem is drilling a hole in the casing to get a power supply.

      They do have frames on amazon that will save the case. I used it for quite a while but I drive Uber now and have gone to a Vantrue pro which records inside and out. However for video quality go pro is much better.

    I have a dedicated dash cam, it records in 1080p resolution and it starts recording automatically when the cars ignition is turned on. The cheapest go pro I've seen only records in 720p and the price is double what my dash cam cost. I have a Mivue 358 dash cam. But am looking into another camera like a go pro as well.

    • @lenfarneth
      @lenfarneth  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use the Go Pro because I have it already and use it for other things as well. I record in 1080 and all the current gopro models record in 1080. Thanks for watching.

      +QU3STION5 That comment must be really old, as that was previous youtube account. I have since got something similar to a go pro as backup for if my DVR isn't working etc. It's a sony HDRS-20. I got it because I saw a review that said it has better image quality in low light and at the time I got it, which was I think about a year ago. It also has wifi so I can view the image being taken on my cell phone. The Mivue 358 dash cam in the car is still there and works really well. It saved me my deductible when a truck hit my vehicle, and also captured 2 car crashes. I was pretty lucky that my car was not hit head on :( The reason you want to get a dedicated dash cam is because it is automatic. If my DVR camera did not start when I started the ignition of the car it would be too easy for me to forget with all the other things I've got to remember to do, so I still say get yourself a dash cam that is designed to function in this way. Also if your car is hit more than likely it will save you your insurance deductible. In my case my deductible was more than twice what I spent on the camera. So it paid for itself.
