    Hi Everyone, Alex from BlackboxMyCar here.
    Today we'll be addressing an ongoing discussion of whether or not a GoPro Camera can be used effectively as a Dash Cam.
    GoPros are great for action footage and sports recording, so why wouldn't they work well as a Dash Cam?
    The main issues don't lie in the camera quality, as the Go Pros have great recording quality as well as ultra wide angle options. What's missing here are the many useful features that you get with a Dash Cam such as the Thinkware F800 Pro.
    The F800 Pro, like many other flagship Dash Cams features Auto-on/recording with ignition as well as Parking Mode capability. The GoPro is also lacking in safety options such as ADAS safety features which are helpful for avoiding/preventing accidents.
    Another big feature that's missing is the ability to partition your memory card for different recording types such as Normal, event and parking mode recording.
    Then there's the issue with 2-channel recording setup, meaning 2 GoPros being mounted, which poses a greater risk of theft.
    Would you use a GoPro as your daily driver?

    I don't know why GoPro can't add a simple 'DashCam' Mode that simply records five minute clips until the Card is full and then deletes the oldest File. They could give you the option the press the 'Tag' Button while recording to 'Protect' that File (when you see Big Foot) and it will not get over-written. The problem with using the Looping feature as a DashCam is that it still saves the 'Bank' at the end of each journey. So, you still have the hassle of having to Format the Card every now & then. They could easily add this feature in an update

      Because it is not designed to be a dash cam, and that is not the intention of the Company. A Go Pro is very expensive and having it sitting on your dash will just get your car broken into. Just go out and buy a proper dash cam for 50$ that will do a much better job.... Problem Solved@!

      The problem with dash cams is that a $20 is the same as a $100 generally. They all use the same 2 types of chips, you're just paying for features that we don't really need. They will all record at the same but rate, unless you actually get a dashcam with a newer and better chip. I'm just going to use my old go pro.

Question 1: once you shut your engine off how do you know its in parking mode does it say Parking mode on? Question 2: what do you recommend me getting if I want to add a 3rd camera just facing the drivers side window in case of a police officer pulling you over or to catch someone with road rage coming up to the window? something cheap and I can just take on and off easily.thanks for any help

      1) Yes, your dash cam will tell you that it is in parking mode.
      2) If you are thinking of adding an interior camera, we would recommend getting the IR camera for the DR750S-2CH instead (look for the BlackVue DR750S-2CH IR for Front & Interior protection), and then getting the DR750S-1CH for recording the rear.

    Go Pro is not designed to be used as a dash cam. The whole idea of a dash cam, is to be INNEXPENSIVE so it doesn't get your car broken into, and to provide completely automatic video recording, every time you start your car, where you don't need to remember to do anything to get the camera working, it just records, and the video is available when you need it. A Go Pro, is expensive, so you need to remove it from your windshield every time, so you car doesn't get broken into, and you will always need to remember to do a bunch of things EVERY time you start your car, for it to work. Personally, I think a Go Pro is completely USELESS as a dash cam, and since you can buy a descent Dash Cam for 30 to 50$, that is designed to do the job you want it to do, screwing around with a Go Pro to do a half ass job, is a waste of time!. I went out and bought a brand new Dash Cam for only 50$, and it works perfectly!....... My opinion.!

      I just got done comparing a GoPro Session 5 (4k 30fps) as a daily driven dash cam against a Blackvue DR750S-1CH unit (1080 @ 60 fps). The 4k is fantastic when its well lit - and can sneak in more details in fleeting moments in the dark - but overall - the Blackvue is much much better at tackling the task. I miss the 4k resolution but the night vision difference between the two is not even close in comparison. Plus dashcams like Blackvue turn on / off with the ignition, have parking modes, and are much more discreet than the obvious GoPro which just screams "break my window and steal my GoPro."
      I miss the 4k - but everything else about a real dashcam - it's no contest. I tried them for a couple weeks and kept my Blackvue.

    • @blackboxmycar
      @blackboxmycar  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joshua, a dash cam will never have the quality (even if it's 4K0 that you'd expect from a GoPro because they're both used for very different purposes. A dash cam is used for recording for long periods of time, so even if it's 4K, you want your file sizes to be optimized and compressed so that you can hold more within your SD card, whereas your GoPro is more for capturing uncompressed high quality action footage. That said though, dash cam footage is still meant to be readable, even when it's in Full HD.

    • @joshooahh
      @joshooahh 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@blackboxmycar you only need a dashcam for the last 5 minutes of action so how about it overites after 1 hour ? Thanks for the reply by the way

    • @blackboxmycar
      @blackboxmycar  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joshua, not a problem. The truth is that you never know when that 5 mins of action will come when you're not around your vehicle. Sure, if you are right there, you can turn on your GoPro and catch all the action right away, but not when you're not there. Accidents happen anytime and anywhere.
      That said, what parking mode does on a dash cam is that it segregates your footage into different folders depending on what they are (automatically detected by your dash cam), whether they're actual impact / motion / just regular recordings (ie. nothing happens).
      Regular recordings are the ones that gets overwritten when your SD card gets full, but the other ones will remain so that you have a record of the accident.
      To clarify, "1 hour" will depend on the SD card that you decide to use. If you use anything upwards of 128GB/256GB which our dash cams support, then you'll be able to record anywhere between 8-10 hours of footage in one go before anything gets overwritten. Hope this helps!
