The reverse osmosis trick also works very well to marinate tofu in miso, which, after several weeks of marinating, transforms the tofu into a very addicting cheese-like product.

As an aussie, i'm glad to finally see vegemite make a show.... we are spoon fed this as a baby :P hehe nah but we do start on it at as soon as we can have solids... have it on hot toast x2 with butter and have it with a coffee.. also a melted cheese on top ( cheese n vegemite toastie )

This looks so good! Here's a typed up version: 1 block extra firm tofu 1 small saucepan water salt 1 Tbsp Vegemite baking sheet parchment paper olive oil pepper onion powder garlic powder paprika, smoked paprika is best 1 green bell pepper 1 small onion baby bella mushrooms skillet 3 slices vegan chao cheese nutritional yeast Sodium Citrate whisk 1/4 cup water hoagie bun vegan mayo Drain 1 block extra firm tofu, no need to press it. Slice tofu in half lengthwise. Fill a small saucepan halfway with water and salt it. Add 1 Tbsp Vegemite. Bring to boil on high heat. Throw 2 slices tofu in the pot and simmer for 20 min. Get a baking sheet and line with a sheet of parchment paper and grease it with a little olive oil. Slice the tofu as thin as possible crosswise (shorter side) with a knife and place overlayed on the parchment paper lined baking sheet. Preheat oven 350F / 180c, goes faster with convection oven. If no convection, just add a few extra minutes to baking time. Drizzle some coconut aminos and olive oil over the tofu slices. Sprinkle some black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika (smoked paprika is best) over tofu slices. Bake at 350F / 180c for 30 minutes but watch it closely! It should be drier and crispy, but not burnt. While that bakes, dice 1 bell pepper, 1 small onion, and some baby bella mushrooms. Heat some olive oil in a skillet and cook the veggies down, seasoning with a little bit of salt (not too much, tofu is very salty as is) and some ground black pepper. In the meantime, let's make the cheese sauce. Put a little water in a small saucepan (rinsed out one from earlier?), enough water to cover the bottom of the pan. Bring to almost a boil, water should be steaming. Add 3 slices of vegan chao cheese slices to the steaming water along with a handful of nutritional yeast and a small handful of Sodium Citrate to keep the cheese in a saucy consistency. Whisk the cheesy sauce with a whisk. The tofu should be done around now. Pull tofu out of the oven and roughly chop while on baking sheet still. Break apart the tofu pieces with hands and toss into skillet with the cooked veggies. Drizzle some olive oil into the skillet and add about 1/4 cup water, enough to cover the bottom of the pan, drizzling water over top so everything steams for 4-5 min. Get a vegan hoagie bun, slice it open lengthwise, spread vegan mayo on it. Top with tofu veggie mixture, then drizzle cheesy sauce over it. Cut in half crosswise for easier eating and admiring the steak-like tofu.
FYI, when I made this, I kept some of the dried strips of tofu and kept them aside. It ends up being the closest thing to turkey bacon I've found. I'm adding liquid smoke to the cooking liquid and making BLTs tonight.
Hey, did you keep the dried strips out of the refrigerator?... Since it's dehydrated tofu I'm assuming is safe to leave them out of he refrigerator. I would like to prepare the tofu one day ahead and prepare the rest of the recipe on the following day. If you have any tips I'll appreciate it! :)
@TJ Wharry Did you try the BLT thing yet? Do you think if I added liquid smoke to the original marinade to set some aside for bacon, that the Philly cheese sandwich flavor would still be ok? Not sure how to add the liquid smoke after it is cooked....
I've done something similar to this to make a vegan bacon and I've gotta say this method works 1000% and does result in some really tasty crispy and a lil chewy vegan meat. Tofu is the best.
@@claudiaivonnefranco7497 basically the same as sauce staches except I pressed and marinated my tofu in vegan bacon seasoning. My only real tip is to either omit the maple syrup or drizzle it just before the bacons done since if it's added too early it'll burn before it gets crispy.
I made this for supper last night and let me just say, MIND BLOWN! 🤯 ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! This was the steakiest, beefiest thing I've eaten since going vegan over six years ago. I have been doing tofu wrong. I bow down to thee! 🙌
I will definitely try this! I'm happy to see a recipe without methylcellulose and all that stuff. Very simple ingredients, thank you! I want to make this today
i made "steaked" tofu accidentally once while baking tofu trying to get it firmer and a little crispy. i left it in the oven "too long" and at first was upset with the "tofu bacon" i had made, but then i used it on sandwiches (as bacon) for the rest of the week and it was delicious!
I've watched a ton of your videos but this was the first time I've attempted to make one. This came out great. I plan on making tofu with this method for some other recipes.
I had a block of tofu and decided to try this out and wow! I subbed vegemite for mushroom stock concentrate (just something also salty since I’m not sure what vegemite tastes like and didn’t have any on hand) and then skipped liquid aminos because again, didn’t have any on hand. Ended up sautéing with onions and then tossed in barbecue sauce for a barbecue steak sandwich and oh my gosh. So so good. Amazing texture and 100% will make again. Next time with the proper ingredients!
DUDE! This was so freggin good! I just made it and loved it! My tofu wasn't as crispy as yours, so I'll probably add more time to the bake next time. But it really turned out great! I'm from Philly, so it gets my approval. Thanks for the video and I'll definitely do this again!
I just made this the other night, and it's probably the best baked tofu I've ever had. First, boiling it in the Marmite broth really added some umami that I've been missing. For the baking, I've found that that for an oven without convection it takes about double the baking time (60-65 minutes), but the texture is SO MUCH BETTER than any other attempt I've made at baking tofu. One suggestion for a future video: I'd love it if you did a gyro marinade version for both tofu and chick-un.
This is so amazing! I love tofu in any form but this technique really seems amazing - I am definitely making these BUT I'll use them in an Asian dish of some sorts. Thanks for always coming up with great ideas for improving all the vegan meat alternatives! . Have a great rest of the week!
Super glad you shared this. Have a lot of tofu always and wanted something new to try. May not do a philly cheese, but like a broccoli and beef or some asian style stuff... yum... Also, recommend the high protein tofu from Trader Joe's if you've never had it. 2x the protein, much firmer, almost never breaks apart. At this point it's the only tofu I use.
Thanks for this one, I love tofu! If you can't eat seitan because of gluten, this is a good idea! What's also really great is that these ingredients are shelf stable. Soybeans, flour, spices, good to go!🌿
Excellent recipe! I used it to make myself a Philly Cheese, but I did one thing different that I think lent to a better texture and easier absorption of the broth. That's not to say that the texture of this recipe isn't great. I actually tried them side by side. When prepping the tofu, I froze one of my tofu blocks (undrained in package). It didn't dry out because I didn't drain it until just before boiling it in the "beef" broth which is actually important so that it doesn't over absorb the salt from the brine, but it did absorb the brine more than the unfrozen tofu because it had holes formed by the ice crystals. This meant that the broth penetrated the tofu and I didn't have to add additional flavor when baking. The frozen tofu had a more fragmented striated texture like a rib eye or fattier cut, the unfrozen tofu was similar to a thin cut top round which is generally less fatty and firmer. Try it out and compare! I used the extra leftovers to make a Philly Cheesesteak pizza which used to be my guilty pleasure :) Thank you for your amazing content! The recipes and ideas in your channel have made being vegan/vegetarian a lot easier for me. I come from a family of barbeque (my grandfather and uncles literally built whole hog smokers and would compete at the state fair) and it has taken a long time to ween myself off of meat. If anyone out there is reading this comment and feels stuck in a meat eating rut just know that you can do it. It has taken me almost 4 years to get to this point. First I cut out pork, then red meat, then chicken, then seafood, and now I am fully plant based. A lot of people try to go cold turkey, but human's are generally creatures of habit so for me I went slow and steady so I could really change for good. Good luck and know that I'm rooting for you!
So inspired by this one I immediately got some super firm tofu (no boiling) made a simple meaty marinade, brushed that on, and I'm baking it now. If it works it might be my next video haha!
I made this tonight, thank you very much! I baked Vegan buns and they really added to the beautiful dish! I really appreciate how you teach us about different Vegan foods.
Plus I used crown royal wood chips to smoke all my vegetables and I smoked my salt as well. I never had smoked mushrooms before, tonight was a lot of things for the first time. Thank you!
Years ago I used to do tofu jerky similar to this -- slow baked in the oven with spices and sauce. One day, my cat discovered the finished tofu. There was absolutely NO getting it away from her. She growled angrily if you tried, exactly the same as when I'd give her actual beef jerky!
@@khet2018 I don't recall the recipe, but I don't think it had onion powder. And you would appear to have missed the nuance where she *took* it rather than having been *given* the tofu.
That's sounds good. Surprising that your cat would eat it tho. I had a cat the loved food would even eat a little bit of mushrooms but she wouldn't eat the fake chicken nuggets
@@Grantpeacelove Yeah it was really surprising to me! She found it, stole a slab of it and we could absolutely not take it away! As @khet said, I don't actually recommend feeding tofu jerky to your cat (they need meat), but I considered her aggressive approval of it as a personal compliment.
@@emmettpickerel that's funny haha. Hey if she likes it can't be too bad for her. Probably better than some of the dried cat foods. Imagine if you made a batch with a little catnip in it for her haha. My one friend had a cat that would eat lettuce and some vegetables I found that really surprising
This is amazing. Instead of making a sandwhich I added to a pan with seared portabella muchrooms, peppers and onions. Then placed on top of rice and it was a hit. We are not a tofu family but this is awesome. Thank you.
I just recommended this to another content maker. Not this specific video but this idea. I was completely blown away at how good this can be if you make it right. Peppiz, onions, mushrooms, tofu and cheesey whizzzz.. fuhgettaboutit!
Wow, this is really simple. I’m trying to incorporate more meatless meals into my diet and have hit a wall with what to do tofu. Will definitely try this method whenever I feel like a steak sandwich.
A meatless idea that I recently tried was adding cooked lentils to spaghetti sauce. Lentils are high in protein, and the texture was similar to ground beef. The flavor of the sauce overpowered the lentils', so, to me, it was an effective substitution.
This looks so good! Philly cheesesteaks we’re my favorite before going vegan. I’ve made the soy curl kind and those are bomb! I’m excited to try this version too!
@@lilivonshtup3808 I’m not sure if Sauce Stache has a recipe video but Thee Burger Dude has a really good recipe video for the soy curl cheesesteaks. They are SO GOOD!
That looks amazing, def gotta make that. I like that it doesn't youse too many ingredients to make the steak tofu as well. Def gonna make this one. There's a vegan restaurant in Philly called Govindas that has really good vegan chicken and Philly cheese steak sandwiches. They also make a really good zucchini melt in a wrap, tried to make it but didn't get good vegan cheese at the time
You a genius brother you do with all of us should do with anything in our lifestyle you update the culture when it comes to food for our bodies!! Anything to make us live longer as human beings on this earth is a gods gift never change never settle never go backwards and I don’t care you are one of the few that does not cook with swine And I fuck with that you solidified God bless you
I made it. It tasted good. I have come to realize that in a cheese steak my favorite part is the mushroom, onions, and peppers. They cheese didn’t really matter to me, and cheese is the reason I’m not vegan. The protein is just there to be a protein. My tofu was too salty, but it worked out by just not seasoning the vegetables. This has a great flavor. I’d suggest it to anyone.
I always watching your vegan food vlogs i tried your vegan steak made from jackfruit i love it...thanks for sharing the amazing vegan food..i will try this one..happy weekend!!
Thanks for sharing❣️ I had to order Vegemite, was worth the wait and it was delicious! Just started using Tofu recently and made Laab, but the way you made and seasoned it is so freaking delicious!
I think I’m going to do the same with my laab, by doing your reverse hydration method and dehydrate it to give it more texture with the Vegemite and the Laab seasonings.
Make this last night. Instead of backing though I drained, sliced like steak pieces and cook on medium heat. Used vegan beef bouillon, salt and pepper, onion powder, smoked paprika and olive oils. It was amazing
long time watcher, first time commenter. I made this tofu but didnt make the sandwich bit. It was wonderful and steaky. The yeast extract flavor came in very nice for mine along with the crispy and some chewy. I was wondering if you've had any experience in freezing tofu , I love this so much I want to have it as a go to. Not sure if it freezes well though.
you can def freeze tofu! there's actually a method of freezing and refreezing tofu to get different textures which makes it get very spongy and fibrous! i highly recommend you try it :) x
I tried making this with homemade lentil "tofu". I followed another recipe i found on youtube to make itbut i used a meaty broth instead of water inside the tofu. Then i followed this recipe exactly. It turned out really great, and from my testing, the homemade tofu actually works even better for dying out in the oven
If you do dairy, try using whey for the cooking liquid and the blender liquid instead of water. Also, make a mushroom sauce like Townsend's and use that in conjunction with the Vegemite. Adds a whole different level of umami. Especially if you use fancy mushrooms. If you're even more into it, add spirulina and chlorella for even more irony taste as well as those sweet cellular benefits.
I used this steak recipe today! Not the rest, i dont try to make vcheese sauce i know my limits. Thank you man this was delicious on top of some Raman and veggie broth soup.
I 'm saw excited to see the creativity that goes into replicating a non-vegan to a vegan dish. It really demands love, passion and precision to turn veggies to taste like meat. Thanks for always sharing scrumptious and mouth watering recipes!
Although I eat meat, I find this channel remarkable. Every time I watch a video, my mouth waters. One of the criticisms that is often made to people who eat vegan is that the portions are too small and that we are not satisfied after the meal; you prove us the opposite.👍
I tore a block of tofu into bite sized pieces, and sauteed half of it with olive oil, spices, and worcestershire. Oh man, it was amazing! IT LOOKED LIKE STEAK!!!! Just like yours did!! So I did the same with the rest of it today; just made a few french fries on the side. It was terrific. I'm not vegan, but I appreciate plant based proteins because although I LOVE real meat, steak is my number one favourite food; it's too overwhelming for my system. It takes up a LOT of energy just to digest, and I have no energy left to just live life. So meat of all kinds is a once or twice a week treat. Especially my beloved steak with butter and a huge pile of grilled onions, mushrooms, and jalapenos. Been haunting this site a lot, collecting recipes. The hard part is deciding what to make. I have my vital wheat gluten, pea protein crumbles, and the new Shroomeats I haven't tried yet. Looking forward to trying those and also Eat Meati. 🎉
I get a really nice roast beef flavour using a cap of red wine and an OXO beef flavour vegan stock cube (along with white+black pepper powder). The smell reminds me of Sunday roasts with the family.
I have been vegan for nearly 10 years but even I was skeptical. I had a block of extra firm tofu in the fridge so I figured that I would give it a try. Since it was extra firm I skipped boiling the tofu in the salt water. Extra firm tofu isn't packed in much water so I didn't feel that this step was necessary. I mixed up a cup of beefless better than bullion, added a few teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce, MSG, browning sauce (for color), mushroom seasoning, smoked paprika, garlic powder and onion powder. Removed the peppers and onions from the skillet and added the tofu and the broth and cooked until the broth was completely evaporated before adding the peppers and onions back to the pan. Topped with a Chao cheese sauce and I can truly say that they were fantastic. I have made cheesesteaks with crumbles, vegan burgers, seitan, and steak strips, but this is by far and away my new favorite method.
This is how many Chinese prepare their tofu, by boiling it in salted water first before frying 💖 can’t wait to try your method for this steak. I am not vegetarian but tofu is my favorite protein by far and tastes the best to me! 🥰
I really enjoy tofu and will be trying this very soon! Seems super doable for a home cook. Hellmans is the best vegan mayo and i have tried many. Great channel. God Bless all with peace and love.
I was expecting you to use bean curd sheets again, which worked out really well. I'm pretty sure my store doesn't sell Vegemite but I do have some better than bouillon vegan beef paste so hopefully that'll work.
Please make a video o homemade Marmite. Here in my country is impossible to get. And i have seen some videos. But because i have never tried marmite before, i don't have a reference point. Can you?

It’s so good! Can’t wait for you to try it
I just recommended this to another content maker. Not this specific video but this idea. I was completely blown away at how good this can be if you make it right. Peppiz, onions, mushrooms, tofu and cheesey whizzzz.. fuhgettaboutit!
This was crazy good and super simple to make. Thanks!!!
Thank you!!! Its so good... I have a few more ideas up my sleeve for this concept
I love the simple ingredients. Very accessible!
Was going to comment, you definitely look slimmer... Great going..!
I tried and can confirm: great results. Really tasty. 👍
I'm making that today thanks again for your great recipes
Excited to try this!
Thanks, Sauce, I think this is my fav video so far.
This looks so good! Philly cheesesteaks we’re my favorite before going vegan. I’ve made the soy curl kind and those are bomb! I’m excited to try this version too!
How do you make the soy curl cheesesteaks?
@@lilivonshtup3808 I’m not sure if Sauce Stache has a recipe video but Thee Burger Dude has a really good recipe video for the soy curl cheesesteaks. They are SO GOOD!
@@msmsmsms4262 Thanks, I'll check it out.
always love your recipes man !
I appreciate that! Thank you so much!!
Definitely trying this… looks amazing
I’m gonna do this tomorrow. I also boil tofu, but usually to make it firmer like an egg. It never occurred to me to marinate it that way.
Awesome!!! You're going to LOVE this!!
How'd it turn out
That looks amazing, def gotta make that.
Anything to make us live longer as human beings on this earth is a gods gift never change never settle never go backwards and I don’t care you are one of the few that does not cook with swine And I fuck with that you solidified God bless you
I haven’t seen this method of cooking tofu before!! Looks delicious!!
I ♥ your channel! I am going to have to try this recipe... all I need is the vegemite. Thanks for another wonderful recipe!
I got one of those wire cheese slicers for this recipe so I can slice the tofu thin and uniform. It works great.
I'm really excited to try this. Thanks!
We made this tonight and LOVED it!
@@flyawayhey thank you, but after cooking this recipe (not a straight block of plain) will it hold its texture?
Love it! Simple and delicious!! 🍃🙏🏻✨
Wow, looks amazing! I'd love to see more stuff with this "steak'ed out" tofu.
This sounds fantastic! I have to make it.
So trying this thank you
I have to try this. It looks absolutely delish!
That’s awesome! Never would have thought tofu would work to make a decent steak sandwich! Also love that you experimented with Sodium Citrate
I’m sooo excited to try this
Looks so delicious 😋 I have to try it.
This looks like a great idea! I will try it!
You're going to love it!! and thank you
I tore a block of tofu into bite sized pieces, and sauteed half of it with olive oil, spices, and worcestershire. 🎉
Yum!!!!! Definitely gonna try this
I just made this and it's so good!
This is looks awesome! I may try this whenever I have more time. 😋
Could we see a video comparison off all your whole cut steak recipes? I'm very curious as to see how they stack up against each other
I get a really nice roast beef flavour using a cap of red wine and an OXO beef flavour vegan stock cube (along with white+black pepper powder). The smell reminds me of Sunday roasts with the family.
This looks so good!
Good job, Saucestache!
Looks so good, I can’t wait to try it
I need to try this with fajitas. (I did something similar with tofu to make little fake chicken bites in my lo mein last night)
Thank you!! What I have been looking for with Montreal Steak Spice (local). With Violife Provolone….. yum.
Please put your food in the stores you are bless with a talented
Without even watching Imma guess YES! Tofu is the best 😁✌️ and you for making this!
Thank you!!!! Yeah it was SUPER good!!!
This is how many Chinese prepare their tofu, by boiling it in salted water first before frying 💖 can’t wait to try your method for this steak. I am not vegetarian but tofu is my favorite protein by far and tastes the best to me! 🥰
Same, girl!
I wish you wouldn't be such a little crybaby about people calling you out for still paying for animal exploitation...
vegan btw
You’ve lost a lot of weight. Looking great. And a great sponsor for Noom. Im going to check it out.
It looks delicious 🤤
Thank you so much!
I really enjoy tofu and will be trying this very soon! Seems super doable for a home cook. Hellmans is the best vegan mayo and i have tried many. Great channel. God Bless all with peace and love.
I'm going to try this over the weekend too.
You're going to love it !!!
@@SauceStache I trust you. Bought your cookbook and have been loving it. Thanks for all you do!
This could work for meal prep cause I'd assume the dry tofu you get out of the oven would keep for a while... just fridge it and steam it when needed
I was expecting you to use bean curd sheets again, which worked out really well. I'm pretty sure my store doesn't sell Vegemite but I do have some better than bouillon vegan beef paste so hopefully that'll work.
Is there a British specialty store nearby your home? I saw it in my local British specialty store.
@@eugenetswong Nope. I live in the U.S.
@@suicune2001 Well, I live in a part of Canada, where most people are brown skinned. I'd encourage you to keep an eye out, and do a web search.
@@eugenetswong Ok, thanks. I might have to just order it online. My store sucks and doesn't have a lot of stuff anyway.
Check World Market. That's where I got Marmite.
Please make a video o homemade Marmite. Here in my country is impossible to get. And i have seen some videos. But because i have never tried marmite before, i don't have a reference point. Can you?
Great request! Hope it works on it too.
Yes, and it's very expensive where I live too
Incredible bro
GOOD AFTERNOON SAUCYMAN!!!
It does look quite good. Cheese sauce could be a bit thicker though. :)
Christopher!!! It was good!! hahaha I wanted it runny! lol
Looks good
Just made this for dinner. Pretty good. We did not make the sauce, because we didn’t get the stabilizer. So we melted follow your heart America on the bread.
Looks amazing, definitely trying this. Btw Noom is a diet
