Totally. I was fortunate enough to see him several times, the last time was 5 yrs to the day of his death. While I think he had better songs, like Adore and The Cross, Purple Rain always makes me cry. I loved it when he said that music gets into your soul. That's so true.

Prince was also a music activist. He lobbied for artists to own the music they created. He played twenty-seven instruments and produced all of his own music. He wrote, played, sang, recorded, and produced his first album when he was only 20 years old. He was an icon and set trends like "text speech" with songs like "I Would Die 4 U" and lots more. I cried the day he died.

As a 51 year old Irish man, I can honestly say that Prince was not only a great entertainer, but his guitar playing is up there with Stevie Ray Vaughan and Clapton. This cat was a spiritual leader of my generation. Such a blessing to be raised on his music. Prince is the goat. No questions asked.
When he dated Sheila E He tried to impress her with his guitar playing. Sweet Prince. She said, that's cute, and then took him to meet her dad who plays for Santana. Prince was blown away. Lol. I love that story. ❤
Who can forget him playing half time at the Super Bowl in the pouring rain singing this song. He never missed a beat. A consummate professional along with being super talented in a multitude of ways.

Prince performed this song during his super bowl performance. It was in the pouring rain. It was epic.

There were several others doing the same thing. Easy to pick out from the regular walkers, we all looked shocked.

Yeah, not offended, mostly just surprised that their parents never threw on a Prince track when they were young. Or, more recently, an Outkast. That was more surprising than Prince.
I agree. Its more about being shocked. I grew up listening to my moms songs as well as mine. So I have a great appreciation for the oldies, motown and etc.
Because real talk, culturally black folks are raised on their parent's music. I knew all of Motown when I was a kid even though that was the music my parents listened to when THEY were kids. Its like a rite of passage. Its one of the first things you teach your children.
I'm so happy I'm an early 80's baby, because I got to grow up with Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston, and Janet Jackson at their BEST. He dedicated it to his father.
I'm glad I'm a 2002 baby, not only did I get to hear all of those people but I get to hear another 20+ years of the next talent.

27 instruments, all self taught. He was a singer, musician, choreographer, writer, producer, actor and musical director. Prince was unique, insanely talented, deeply caring and Beautiful. I miss him, he was a huge influence on my musical taste and the musical industry. 😭

As a gen x'er this will probably be the biggest musical loss in my lifetime. Prince was more than a musician, he was an entire band (he could play like 30 instruments professionally) not to mention a prolific songwriter writing songs for everyone from Madonna to Kenny Rogers.
I love that so many of you kids know the backstory of so many musicians whose work and life touched generations of people including this soon to be 67 year old lady 💜

I am 46 years old. I've loved him since I saw his album at KMart and he was in the bikini undies. I was like 6, I didn't know what I wanted, but I knew I wanted THAT! 😂 When I met my husband and he said he was from Minneapolis, my eyes got big and I blurted out, CAN WE GO FIND PRINCE?? Every mothers day, he watches Purple Rain with me. My husband isnt a fan, but did admit it was the best live show he's ever seen.

In reality the song was written by Prince. It was just within the movie’s storyline that Wendy and Lisa wrote it. Though Wendy’s guitar playing did inspire Prince to revamp the song from a Country song which he initially intended it to be into the Rock/Gospel song it became.

Yes MJ might have been more popular but prince was just unforgettable, I remember my daughter telling me they played his songs in her school over the intercom after he passed, buildings were colored purple after he passed including the Eifel tower in my town everyone was wearing purple 💜

There is a newer album its online released a few years ago...it's called a piano and A microphone. It wasn't meant to be an album but he's going thru the songs on his piano as he was putting them together so to speak.

IMHO Prince was much cooler as a musician than Michael Jackson. MJ could sing , dance and composed some great Tunes, but Prince was funkier and could play virtually any instrument. Really underrated as a guitar player. Prince has a bunch of killer songs. You owe it to yourself to watch the entire movie "Purple rain".

Not only could Prince play nearly any instrument, he could do almost any style. Look at some of the people he wrote music for. Or would show up to produce for. When I was a teenager, I couldn't fall to sleep until the radio played Purple Rain......
Literally the only star I ever cried for when I heard he died. I still can’t believe he is gone. He was and still is a musical genius. From day one, he wrote, sang, played every instrument, arranged and produced his own music. All at just 17 years old.
As others have said, watch the movie because it was semi-autobiographical and amazing. Then, watch the documentary Purple Reign to learn more about the rest of his life. His vault of unreleased music (his vault) is said to contain enough songs to be able to release an album a year for the next 100 years. Just mind blowing.
Also, he was one of the SEXIEST men alive❣️

LaVonda DeBrito I heard the news of his death on my car radio as I was on my way to take care of my son who had just had surgery the day before. When I got to his house, he asked what was wrong and I said Prince had died. Then he fell asleep from the pain medication he was on. When he woke up several hours later, he said he had the craziest dream that Prince had died. I had to tell him all over again that it was true. It was a horrible day.

He did a Tv 30min special Ill never forget he showed his vocal range high to low and steps from each note. And they actucually showed him playing his guitar .All with ease and prefection. Blown away.

Eric responded... "I don't know, you would need to ask Prince that." I love It! He is phenominal with his pitch and guitar playing you are so correct!

Watch him play with the group of artists that played While My Guitar Gently Weeps in memory of George Harrison. Prince comes in and kills the guitar solo and burns it up. You can see the looks on the other artists faces how amazing he was.
He also played the piano- just one of those talents!!!
Don't go sleepin on Prince young man. He learned every lesson that Jimi Hendrix, Rick James and Sly Stone could offer. He used it all to literally saved rock and roll in 1984 with this album.

@@burlhorse61 I think Prince was both. Michael was a tragic figure who, in my opinion, peaked in the early 80s. After that he almost became a parody of his former, potential self.
When David Bowie died I told my kids that the only truly brilliant musical innovator left, from my generation, was Prince. Then it snowed in April.
Bowie died around my birthday. And I had been listening to Michael Jackson at work all day when I learned Prince died.

Prince wrote all of his song’s. Self taught musician. The way he plays the guitar sort of reminds me of Jimmy Hendrix. When I went to his concert he played Purple Rain for 45 minutes.

Rhonda Martin Oh it was!! Before taxes. Back in 1984 the tickets weren’t even $18.00. He gave an amazing show! Sheila E was his opening act. She played a few song’s including It’s a glamorous life. Whenever prince came out he threw numerous tambourines out into the audience. He was quite a showman!! He gave the audience quite a show! It was incredible!!
Dude, that’s just what you can see in the movie, “ This song meant a lot”, I’m sitting in tears hearing it again now.. and I’ve heard the song countless times. Own it, and, this was the 1st and last movie my older sister and I saw together in the movies…

Prince is one of those artists that EVERYONE has to have some in their catalog of music. Prince is a serious musical talent man. Check out the ENTIRE Purple Rain soundtrack. Not a bad song on it. He's got a ton of hits and classic jams. He can actually play all the instruments but he's a guitar god as well as a killer vocalist.
Actually man, if you get to it, watch the Purple Rain movie. I believe the sequel is something like Under the Cherry Moon or something ( I could be wrong though). Purple Rain is kind of like the story of how he got started.... kind of like a RUN DMC / Def Jam and Krush Groove kind of deal.

Not by musicians, he's not underrated. But because he wasn't *specifically* a guitarist, maybe some folks don't think of him when discussing famous guitarists (Clapton, Hendrix, Vaughan, Page, et al).

Years ago, somebody asked Clapton how it felt to be the greatest guitarist in the world. His response was you're going to have to ask Prince.

For ex, take Clapton. From what I understand, there were at least 2 guitarists whom some would say, somewhat intimidated him, or at least to him, give him some serious competition, one was Hendrix, the other was Prince.

And if you pull off all that technology the singers in this day, they have proved to sound awful without all the mojo . The 80s had raw talent , they had their real teeth, everyone you see singing today has dropped thousands on themselves 😂. Oh...and these poor artists can’t even lip sync without getting caught. 1999 has to be my favorite. So many memories... the theme song for New Year's going into 2000. My 21st New Year's, spent with my brother and his friends at a bar. 1999 played every 3rd or 4th song and everyone sang. Best New Year's Ever!

His stage presence was literally THAT breathtaking! And THEN he would sing! I'm showing my age here but I was blessed to have been in the moment with this album on the radio, damn I miss those days!
The build up in "Purple Rain" is positively epic. It starts out low and chill, progressing by the end to basically catharsis of pure emotional agony, pounding out the pain through vocals and guitar work. It never fails to move me.

That performance was freaking magical. I saw a behind the scenes video of that show and the Production Designer called Prince before the show when it was raining. He asked Prince if he was going to be ok with the rain. Prince's response was, "Can you make it rain harder?"

They don’t know good music they consider rap music but I’m old school and lyrics with instruments is music to me plus it was all about love in the day
