And Prince (RIP) did this without going to a single rehearsal. Dhani was quite concerned that Prince would mess it up and Tom Petty (RIP) told Dhani (basically) to chill because it was Prince and therefore, it would be great. And it was. Petty and Prince were friends. Prince was a little arrogant and this unnerved people and some didn't want to work with him. But Prince knew his worth and felt he didn't have to rehearse like others did. Prince had a natural gift for musicianship.

That’s not the true story. Prince went to the rehearsal but Jeff Wynn’s guitarist that played the first solo wanted to do both solos. During the rehearsal he played both and Prince said let him play, I will take over during the performance. He never practiced that with them because of Jeff Wynn’s guitarist.

"That guy" is Jeff Lynne of ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) a legend in his own right. When interviewed once about how the Beatles might have ended up sounding if they'd remained together, John Lennon said ELO. Jeff became a close friend of George Harrison and produced much of his solo work and also performed with George, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan & Roy Orbison in The Travelling Wilburys. ELO in itself is a deep and hugely enjoyable rabbit hole to disappear into.

This was Prince’s response to being snubbed by Rolling Stone Magazine’s top 100 guitarists.
Prince didn’t do this in rehearsal. That’s why he kept looking at Petty to see if it was okay to keep going. Petty was happy to oblige and keep singing the chorus while Prince had his moment.
And did I mention … Rolling Stone magazine execs were in the audience.

I saw Prince at a concert in 1981. This man was standing on top of the piano playing it with his feet in high heel boots and at the same time playing the guitar. He was just laughing and looking at the crowd while he was doing it. That whole stadium was in shock! He was incredible

I loved watching Dhani Harrison's face as he enjoyed what Prince and the others did for his daddy's song! It was like going back to the 60's and seeing his young daddy with the Beatles! Thanks for this reaction!

Hahaha. I’ve loved this for so long. It makes me laugh watching reaction videos. Just remember this, the old folks have all those years more experiences that you never heard inside of us. There was a lot more to the world than the Beatles and Elvis. There is vocal perfection in a small woman called Barbra Streisand.. if all you think is Broadway… that’s like saying Prince doesn’t know how to play a guitar. Get past her biggest hits. That’s not where Barbra’s genius lies. EGOT, 10 Grammys, 2 Oscars, Tony, 14 Golden gloves, Presidential Medal of Freedom, Kennedy Honors award…. So many more. She did disco with Donna Summer..

I feel like someone should explain what happened here. Just listening to it is very emotional, but Prince was really playing for a different audience. That was for guitarists, for musicians, to understand, something that George Harrison would have understood and appreciated. The entire solo was there to illustrate the genius of Harrison as a songwriter, and Harrison and Clapton as guitarists. Prince showed a deep understanding of the A-minor/A-major split modal through the way he stayed on the A-C-G theme as the root moves around to create the progression, then his move to the Dorian IV (F#) is a brilliant call-out to Harrison's guitar language - later in the solo, you can see Prince smile at Tom Petty when he goes back to the natural F to rejoin the rest of the band. The little fill figures are a nod to Clapton's brilliance on the original White Album recording as well. But Prince still made it his with the trem-picking, and that absolutely brilliant octave section about 2/3 of the way through, just really slick and nasty. A lot of this was literally Prince proving to the legendary guitarists in the audience that he was one of them, that he understood the theory, the technique, and the Beatles, to be honest, as well as anyone who ever lived. It's easy to understand that this solo was heavily emotional, just after George's passing, but the tribute is so much deeper than just being a great guitar solo - Prince paid tribute to the craftsman Harrison, and that was really powerful to anyone who got it.

Absolutely a kick ass performance. There is a back story that Prince was supposed to be lead guitar but one of the other performers insisted he do it. And so when it got to Prince, he adlibbed that solo which is why you see Tom Petty and a couple others smile when Prince flat gets it.

Glad you took my advice and checked this out. It's one of those moments in time where time stands still and history is made. People come together to honor George and it all just comes together. Personally it was pretty emotional for me the first time i saw it. Seeing Dhani up ther playing his dad's song, looking just like his dad at that age, and me being a musician with a son who followed my footsteps to become one also it hit home pretty hard for me but nothing like the Taylor Hawkin's tribute when his son go up there to play drums with the Foo Fighters. That had me and my son in tears watching it.
