Surprising Fall Dormant Seeding Results

  • It’s not too late to fix your fall lawn seeding project. You can dormant seed in the cold weather of late fall when it’s cold enough for the seed to remain dormant until spring. The seed germinates at the earliest possible time when the weather is still cool and rainy leaving you very little watering to do. It will also mature much earlier and be able to survive the heat of the summer much better than a typical spring overseed.

    This is exactly what the lawncare community needs, longterm experimental testing with a control for actual proven results. Great video!

    Some say that over seeding for KBG isn't necessary. In this case it was more that just overseeding because of all the dead areas. Great experiment. It shows that dormant seeding does work because if you didn't, as well as KBG does spread on its own. That would have been too much of an area to fill in on its own. Well done BW.

    • @YouCanDoItLawnCare
      @YouCanDoItLawnCare  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much Striperman! You are correct. It just depends on how much KBG you have and how long you are willing to wait for it to fill in. This experiment showed how well both work.

    Great demonstration. Will try this. Off-topic: Lived in Central Europe for a while and virtually anyone with a large backyard like this has the entire area tilled for garden crops. The food produced is pretty amazing. Neighbors sharing crops, feeding excess to chickens and pigs. They save a lot of money doing this. You might want to give it a try. Giving the size of your land you would do well with a cheap small tractor with tilling attachment. You could speed things up and grow a ton of food. /endrant

      Thank you very much Matt! I’ve often wondered what I could do with a garden that large. We donated over 150 lbs. of vegetables to the local food shelf this year with just the three small gardens that we have. I may be past my “use by date” for farming however. 😅

    BW - with your dormant seeding, can you elaborate on pre & post emergents? I’ll take it that pre emergent wasn’t applied, correct ??
    Thank You…. 🤙

    • @YouCanDoItLawnCare
      @YouCanDoItLawnCare  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Mills! I used Scotts starter fertilizer with weed preventer as a pre-emergent in the spring. I think it's called "Triple action Safe for Seeding" now. It worked very well. Most post emergents can be used after the new grass has been mowed a couple of times. Read the label for exact time. I used Roundup on the quackgrass spots.

    Im in West Michigan. I'm thinking of doing my first dormant seeding of ttt fescue over 16,000sq. ft. in late February. If we dont have snow on the ground that day, should i cover the whole area with peat moss too??

    • @YouCanDoItLawnCare
      @YouCanDoItLawnCare  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question Howard. It’s not required, but it does help retain moisture and improve germination. A thin layer is all you need. 1/8 to 1/4 inch. It’s a lot of work and expense for a lawn that size though. Maybe just use it on thin or bare areas.

      Thank you very much Stan! I’ve been mowing the back yard at 2.25 inches this year. The lawn is a little bumpy to be mowed that short with a 48 inch mower deck, but I like how it looks at that height. I may try 2.5 next year just to see how that works. I always mowed at 3.0 inches in the past but I didn’t like the shaggy look the grass got by the time it needed to be mowed again. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Do you think this would work with turf type tall fescue?? What about snow mold on the seed?

    • @YouCanDoItLawnCare
      @YouCanDoItLawnCare  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I do think it will work with tall fescue. Snow mold grows on lush green grass. The seed should be unaffected by it. Interestingly, I have found that snow mold rarely affects young grass planted in the fall over the first winter. I’m not sure why. It’s just an observation.

  • @nerminterzic3586

    do you think covering the grass seed with peat moss would provide a better germination rate? just in case there is not a lot of snowfall in the winter and we get warm days in the winter? I live in Nebraska.

    • @YouCanDoItLawnCare
      @YouCanDoItLawnCare  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question Nermin! I would think peat moss would be helpful in preventing desiccation and maintaining a slightly more even soil temperature through the winter. It may also help prevent seed from being blown around or eaten by birds.

  • @back4052

    Did you do any kind of spring clean up or just leave it alone to not disturb the seed?

    • @YouCanDoItLawnCare
      @YouCanDoItLawnCare  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a great question. I did a leaf cleanup shortly after snowmelt, but I didn’t do any raking. Instead, I used a leaf blower and a small battery-powered mower. The freeze-thaw cycles in the spring and fall caused the grass seed to work its way into the soil. The ground is still very moist, with frost coming out of it at this time of year, so any grass seed remaining on the soil’s surface adheres very well to the ground. The mower doesn’t generate much lift, so it doesn’t suck up any grass seed either. You can see me do it at the 4:40 mark in this video. th-cam.com/video/sBggR6Gy-8o/w-d-xo.html

    Question
    I planted black beauty grass seeds about 4 weeks ago and I don’t see any signs of germination, it’s October 28 2022 in north Texas Can it be I have old grass seeds I had the bag stored in my shade for 2 years.

    • @YouCanDoItLawnCare
      @YouCanDoItLawnCare  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, old seed takes longer to germinate, and if it was stored in warm and moist conditions, it may go completely bad. Stored dry and cool for two years, l would anticipate 50% or more of the seed to germinate.

    Can you dormant seed on bare dirt and cover with peat moss?

    • @YouCanDoItLawnCare
      @YouCanDoItLawnCare  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Seth, Yes you can! I would recommend either working the seed into the soil with a rake or covering with peat moss. You could even do both. 👍
