    DPF was the worst invention ever for the diesel. They are always prone to falling and mechanics ,as you say, seem clueless as to how to fix the issues. Thanks for your excellent video

      Emissions control device, great
      Now measure it's emissions under its worse case operating conditions IE whilst under a heavy regeneration cycle.
      No point collecting soot to burn later if the additional fuel required to burn it causes worse emissions.
      Same goes for stupidness like secondary air pumps etc, fooling emissions measurements by pumping air into the exhaust doesn't mean your emissions are actually cleaner.

    Just want to say a thank you for all your videos on transit customs and DPF's after spending a few evenings watching your videos I tackled my van this weekend and found a blocked fuel vaporizer. Sadly I couldnt get it out with the dpf attached so had to pull dpf out, you make it look easy getting it out. However a clean up with a blow torch reassemble and some dpf cleaner and 5 minutes of forced regen and now 0.5kpa on idle was between 3kpa and 5kpa before. Out for a test drive and no lights or limp mode! Thanks for taking the time to make your videos they are a great help!

    Great video mate. What is critical for dpf systems is when vehicle gets an oil change you must reset the oil data and service reminders as the systems only know if you tell them. Otherwise the system thinks it hasn't had an oil change and thinks the oil is diluted and will not complete regenerations.

    On transits during regen the engine glow plugs come on when the engine is in over-run. When putting throttle on, the vapouriser pump hz will increase proportionately up to a max of around 4hz pulses as the increased combustion heat allows more vapouriser fuel to be injected without visible white smoke appearing from the tailpipe. Conversely, when in over-run the pump hz will ramp down to zero (stop flow to the vapouriser) and the glow plugs will come on. At this time during over-run the throttle body will close more to gag the air flow to try maintain DPF heat until load conditions mean heat can be restored. As soon as you ease your foot back onto the accelerator the glow plugs will go back off and the pump hz will ramp back up again. The vapourizer glow plug stays energised throughout. Debatable how much influence the cylinder glow plugs heat has on the combustion or regen heat process during this small operating window or whether it is mainly to load the engine up via load on the alternator in the same way as the heated screen comes on (60A load) during regen.

    • @johnnyskratch40
      @johnnyskratch40 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think what most likely happens is on-over-run, as the combustion fuel is decreased then post-combustion fuel is increased and the glow plugs are energised to help burn this post injection fuel to maintain heat. I've noticed on my 2014 van it happens more i.e. the glow plugs kick in more frequently on over-run during regens when the weather is colder. No doubt manufacturers will have ECU's calibrated to pull more and more tricks out of the bag as ambient temps drop to help generate heat during regens..

    Interesting stuff, not sure how similar a 2012 Subaru Outback diesel system is but my mate bought one a while back with 50k miles, not long after purchase the money light came on and it went into limp mode so he took it to the local garage, something like £1200 later with some new parts and a dpf clean he got it back, there were signs the dpf had previously been cleaned and the garage said chemical cleaning doesn't work (which my friend now takes as gospel) so it was sent away to be burnt out? or something, anyway the garage said it possibly wouldn't work, later on the eml came back and it went into limp mode again so he took it to Subaru, a new dpf and parts for something like £2500 and it was meant to be fixed but by then he was paranoid it was going to go again so recently part ex'd it on a Hyundai.

    DPF. One of the major problems is understanding why it fills! Less foot on the pedal stops generating the soot in the first place. DPF systems rely on the temperature sensors to regen.

    A couple of years ago a car guy in stralia called John cadogan was talking about the Toyota hilux dpf issues and one of his theories was a air leak in between the air flow sensor and the engine.

    • @rbeamish6492
      @rbeamish6492 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This can absolutely cause DPF blockage. I had a cracked intercooler hose on my Volvo V50 cause the DPF to block. Apparently the air leak messes with the sensor readings which throws up error codes on the ECU. While those error codes are there the DPF regen cycle won't run. When my mechanic replaced the hose the regen cycle kicked in as soon as he started the car.

  • @prawny12009
    @prawny12009 ปีที่แล้ว

    Catch 22 other faults cause regen cycle to fail to prevent the dpf burning out/melting but it then blocks the dpf and refuses to regen at all even after the first fault is fixed.
    Clogged adblue injectors cause nox emissions faults (selective nox efficiency below fresh hold) which prevent regeneration, leaking as blue can also completely block the exhaust with urea salts showing as a clogged dpf.

    Glow plugs are used to help start with low emissions and also in many cases they are used during warmup. If a glow plug has failed that cylinder is less efficient and the engine will have a different performance from that cylinder during warmup. This torsional shock on the crankshaft will damage a dual mass flywheel with all of that cost! I had that conversation with a LUK Dual Mass Flywheel Technical rep. Also crankshaft dampers on the front of the engine if they fail the Dual Mass Flywheel takes all the Torsional vibration and fails early. False economy do the glow plugs.

    Hi, Jimmy, my wife has a 2.0 tdci kuga she's had from new, its on 117k miles, it regens as it should & I change the oil 4 times a year, do you think I should give the DPF a clean as a preventative measure given the miles or wait until it starts being an issue? I have always serviced it myself from new and it's never missed a beat, what's your thoughts, cheers. Billy.

    It's not just mechanics, it's everyone. I had a Mercedes E220d Convertible with a soot content of 400%. The key thing is what does the vehicle manufacturer count as red lines and what do they consider grey lines in terms of DPF regeneration cycles running naturally. Using Autel 806 I was able to let the car know the DPF had definitely been replaced, no, honestly. Then making sure that the red line of the EML not being illuminated does not prevent DPF regeneration drive the vehicle whilst keeping the measured PIDs as close to the perfect conditions as possible. In my particular case the engine speed was specified as between 725 and 925 RPM. This is in no way keeping the car in a lower gear and higher road speed to keep the revs high. This does nothing. On a vehicle that has a functioning DPF regeneration system you will see the optimal differential pressure value fluctuate between +1 to +16 and two negative values which can not be returned by the sensors. When the value is in the possible range you will see the exhaust temps rise from 300's to 600's as the system works and these will drop back when the range switches to the nonsense values. This is how the system is set up on '13 Mercedes 180, 200, 220, 250 diesel engines. I got this vehicle to return soot content of 72.5% and 77% the last two times I checked over the last 3000 miles of normal mostly urban driving. It took 3.5 trips on the A34 between Oxford and Newbury to get the DPF to stabilise at a normal fill level. No physical work was done on the vehicle except the Differential pressure sensor was replaced at owners request as the last "Parts Grenadier" told him it was necessary. I also used one tank of fuel with a non specific additive to run this process. The key TLDR message is get a live data scanner which gives you the PIDs you need to monitor for the DPF system to optimise the conditions needed for your manufacturers system. Plus EML illuminated is a red line for every manufacturer. Also don't believe everything you read on Google... Thanks for coming to my TED talk!

    The custom has got a dangerous safety problem. The design of the air intake for the heater it lets fumes from under the engine bay though the windscreen wiper arm holes and some small grills the fumes the get sucked into the cabin. The exhaust needed to exit at the rear not half way down trapping the fumes
